Persona 3's Weiss Schwarz Deck: For the Uninitiated

a few weeks ago, i fell into the weiss schwarz rabbit hole .. and figured that it was finally time today to share my findings ! as this is an informative post for people who are p3 fans above weiss schwarz fans ... here's the gist:

Weiss Schwarz (Weiß Schwarz, white-black in german) is a japanese TCG card game that is probably most well-known for releasing decks that tie into popular anime and game franchises, with participating titles such as Fate/stay night, Hatsune Miku Project Diva, Madoka Magica and - the most relevant to us - Modern Persona (3 - 5). The cards featured include mostly official art - such as sprites and reused promo art - but some of it's special, unique or rare cards have custom art made specifically for the deck!

The P3 deck specifically was released only in Japanese (unlike the P4 and P5 sets) but it had two unique releases: it's first 2008 release that came alongside a boxset, mat and a premade deck available for purchase, and then later rereleased in 2021 as a special backlog Chronicle set where every card was made into a shiny foil card (only 3000 of this set were ever made, so it goes for a lot now)! Fun Fact: this means that although the Chronicle boxset included every single card ever released (+ a bonus brand new one that sadly reuses FES art) it appeared to include some cards twice - because for some cards, the only difference between it and another was that it was a foil card :]c

The series name for the original release is P3/S0XX-0XX, and for the Chronicle release is P3/SC0XX-0XX !

Phoenix Ranger Featherman R from Persona Series

The atmosphere in the dorm was tense. Everyone was ready; that wasn't the issue. It was the wait before then, the hands of the clock seeming to move slower with every passing minute, that put everyone so on edge.

Nobody knew who first turned the TV on, but the background noise helped to soothe their nerves some, so nobody turned it off. Maybe it was because it was the final day, or maybe it was just the channel that happened to be on, but Apathy syndrome wasn't mentioned even a single time.

All that is to say that when the upbeat music of the Phoenix Ranger Featherman R theme started playing, it wasn't surprising that SEES found themselves in a huddle around the screen.

Whether they were intimately familiar with the show or had never heard of it before, it made no difference: before the credits rolled, every one of them was hanging out in the lounge, eyes glued to the screen.

Of all of them, Kotone was the first to shed tears as the ending music played. She attempted to hide it, wiping her face on her sleeve, but Junpei noticed regardless and threw himself across the room to give her a hug, pulling Yukari with him. Akihiko almost collided with them in his haste to comfort her, embracing her from the other side. Koromaru barked in excitement, jumping onto the couch (nobody admonished him for it), closely followed by Fuuka and Aigis. Mitsuru was slower, unsure how exactly she was meant to react, but when she saw that even Ken had joined in the huddle, left her chair to join the rest.

They were all crying at this point, some more than others, but nobody needed to elaborate. They'd all seen parts of their dynamic in the Feathermen; had just watched them take down their final foe and stand victorious. It was a mirror to their own situation, but they didn't know how their trial would end.

There were tears of joy, of fear, of sadness. They were the emotions that every member of SEES had experienced that past year, shared by them all. Kotone hugged them tight, stretching her arms as wide as possible to encompass everyone.

"I love you." Her voice was small, but everyone heard it regardless and hugged tighter.

"Well," she managed to say some minutes later, after most of the tears were dry, "we have a big fight ahead of us. It'd probably be best to have a nap and rest up."

Junpei's voice came from somewhere over her shoulder as an affirmative grunt, but when she turned to look at him his eyes were already closed. The emotional outburst had taken a toll on them all, and none of them had slept much the previous night in preparation.

"Don't worry," Mitsuru said, assuaging a fear that nobody had yet spoken, "I've set an alarm for 3PM. There will be enough time to prepare after that."

So Kotone slept, crowded onto a single couch with SEES - with the Nyx Annihilation Squad. With her friends.

Rpg Anon: I honestly tried my hand at figuring out what Phoenix Rangers Neo Featherman R all people from the classes would be and I seriously gave up after a bit cuz I could think up what birds and colors to give. Here's all I had:

(Side note: the canon birds plus colors don't make shit sense. Argus's aren't really pink per se. Hawks and eagles aren't really red. And so on. Some do but not all.)

Hajime: Red AND Black Phoenix. Yes that's right. Phoenix Ranger Feather Phoenix. And yes both colors. Blame Izuru. Hajime is Red Phoenix but becomes Black Phoenix cuz of Izuru. Becomes Red Black Phoenix after coming to terms with both personalities as one. Still called Feather Phoenix tho.

Sayaka: White Crane. Has to be.

Kyoko: maybe Owl. No idea about color. Yellow Owl is already take tho and yellow is reserved for the bro character. The wiki does say that Blue is reserved for the smart but young character tho.

Kazuichi: Yellow. No idea about bird.

Hiyoko: Maybe Flamingo. No idea about color.

Mahiru: maybe Pink cuz we debated about this some time ago. No idea about bird.

Sonia: also arguably Pink cuz Pink featherman is reserved for the girly character of the team and you know, "My Femininity is hella boss".

Junko: HAS to be Black and White. No idea about an evil despair bird. Only thing I could find was a somewhat holy good guy medicinal mythical bird of both Hope and Despair. No way that's Junko.

Honestly I wish I could just use Peko's love of fluffy animals and the animal ears she gave everyone to make Power Rangers.

//My personal takes on this are that Mahiru should be read and Hajime should be black, even if he does have Izuru to switch between, thag shouldn’t change his colour.

//Also, I know I’ve probably mentioned this before, but Johnny Yong Bosch, Hajime’s English Voice Actor, used to play the second Black Ranger, Adam. So it stands to reason he’s be in that role.

Now it looks like we have Phoenix Ranger Featherman joining the team. I kept getting the Phoenix Ranger Featherman in my head which is these superheroes that look a lot like Power Rangers, except it's Persona Superheroes. And I do love the song they play even in the Persona 5 DLC.

And for my A-Pal's On this Day Post

I love that Commercial video I saw on YouTube Back in 2014 when they just introduced the New Nintendo 3DS. Like I love seeing the Nintendo characters go fashion with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. And I love Kyary Pamyu Pamyu so Much! And the same goes for my friend from Canada, Tekki. And I did a drawing of my OC dressing as a Superhero and I was thinking of redrawing him as a superhero and maybe have some of his friends join with him. Or imagine having our OCs getting fashioned by the Japanese singer herself.

Shadow R 😺🗡️: Alright, Maxwell, May and Sam. I bet we can have a lot of fun listening to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's music. [Minor Persona 5 spoilers]

Her name's Futaba, and she's a genius. She knows anything and everything about the internet, hacking, coding, anything computer related. She's our guy in the chair and our Navigator. She also likes to make songs with Vocaloid.

She really likes Phoenix Ranger Featherman R, I think she said it was her special interest? She has tons of merch and will go on for days if you get her talking about it.

She can be pretty blunt sometimes, and she's not really good with large crowds. But, she's getting better with dealing with them and going outside! It makes me really proud. She's improved so much! When we first met her, she was a complete shut-in, but now she says she wants to go to school!

...She's not actually related to me. She's my caretaker's daughter, and he's like my dad to me. I still see her as my little sister, though. Even though we're not related, I still feel like her big brother. I want the best for her, and I'm sad that this stupid time loop means that we can't really grow up and have a future.

If one thing is good about this time loop, it's that she can practice being around people and talking to them because every conversation has been the same for the past 6 years. She knows exactly what they're going to say, and it helps her feel a lot more at ease, especially since they won't remember when the next loop kicks in.

This was long, sorry. I tend to ramble when I get sentimental.

"I'd be glad to answer that. Power Rangers is a western version of Featherman basically. So if you know about Power Rangers you kinda get the main gist of the featherman series. You have Neo Featherman R, Phoenix Rangers Featherman, Tropical Blast Featherman, etc. Different shows but all in that same style, involving a group of individuals who transform and save the day from the villain of the week. Sometimes there's a plotline but overall it's all separate from each other usually. The fun is from the action sequences and the at times cheesy dialogue."

Thoughts on super sentai/power ranges type stuff in general? (Sorry if this question is too vague)

I love Henshin Sentai stuff! Whether teams or solo. Obviously I grew up on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers craze, and discovering the source material only makes it more alluring to me.

What's funny is usually if an unrelated series has a super sentai pastiche in it, I'll be incredibly interested in that and wish it was a real thing. Phoenix Ranger Featherman R in the Persona series, for example =P

I randomly had the idea to make toku styled versions of Bonnie’s Violet Hare/Red Haring and Juliet’s Yellow Sparrow form in Hare Raising Adventures. So I did. I drew it based on Super Sentai and Sentai like characters like Choujin Sentai Jetman from Toei and Phoenix Ranger Featherman R from Persona. I still kept the skirt tho. Gotta have it. I’m unsure if I should use this design or the original. I’ll ask Juliet about it.
