It's been a while since I've last updated this fic, but here it is - the next chapter of The Butterfly Effect. Hope you enjoy! And thanks for everyone's lovely support with this story. Hopefully it won't be as long before the next chapter is out 🤞

John was torn. Torn between all those who needed him. Torn between duty and love. But, in the end, the choice was easy. His place was on the GDF carrier headed for Auckland, at the side of his brothers and Grandmother.

The post-mission clean up (if it could indeed be called that), the press, and the rest of the world waiting on them, would simply have to manage. God knows, he was having to.

Hauling himself aboard, he gently touched the painted name of the carrier, before finding a vacant seat next to Tam.

"Welcome aboard!" Colonel Casey greets, over the sounds of the engines, and flicking of buttons.

Val had been good to them. As soon as she had a functional comms line up and working, she'd taken the initiative to pull strings with a number of contacts. Phoenix would be allowed the time off from their regular civilian jobs back home to help with getting International Rescue back onto their feet, if they so wished.

It was a unanimous 'yes.'

"We're here for as long as you need us," her words held a warmth befitting her honorary Aunt status. She'd squeezed his shoulder, before brushing a stray lock of hair out of Scott's face.

"Thanks," John sighed, with a gratitude that somehow furthered his exhaustion.

Although it was in the world's best interest to see International Rescue functioning again, as swiftly as possible; it was good to know that people had their backs when the chips were down.

Val made her way to the front of the carrier and a flutter of garish Hawaiian fabric filled the seat.

Gordon peered over the eldest brother.

"Hey there, Bird Bath! How's the head?"

A groan, but Scott's eyes remained shut.

"Gords..."

"The one and only!"

Scott could hear his brother's Cheshire Cat grin.

"As your brother, I feel it's my duty to tell you that that landing was...*raspberry* stinko, awful...I've seen Rigby land better!" He gave a thumbs down.

"Ah, save it! Yours is the one Thunderbird that doesn't fly," Rigby deadpanned, from the cockpit.

"Make him stop," Scott's hoarse whisper is mainly levied at John, but entreats any and all who can hear him.

"Gladly. Just tell me how," John smirks, finally letting his shoulders drop a fraction.

"Ah, don't be like that... Hey, I know what'll cheer you both up!"

"No."

"A good ole sea shanty!" Gordon whips out his pocket device.

"Veto."

"Aww, really John? Not even, 'Leave her Johnny, leave her?'"

"Especially not that."

"Fine. I've got you..."

A moment passes as Gordon scrolls, then taps; and the hangar bursts into song.

"Eurovision!"

Virgil reopens his eyes to the sounds of...wait, is that Conchita Wurst?

Oh God, Gordon - Rise Like a Phoenix...really? Phoenix. This was definitely Gordon's taste in music - and humour.

Virgil doesn't remember being hover-stretchered to the hangar, but it's good to hear the voices of his family once more.

"Stop your fussing. I'm fine,"

"I'll be the judge of that Mrs. Tracy."

"Matthew Eric Jones!" Grandma starts.

"She middle named me! Did y'hear that Mac? She middle named me!"

"Oooh! Now you're in for it!" Gordon's chimes in, clearly enjoying his inflight entertainment.

"I was a doctor-"

"-And now you're my patient. So, unless you're going to sign an AMA form, you'll sit back nicely, and let me do my job."

"Oooh, I like him." Grandma's voice concedes. "Fine. But if they keep me in, you're bringing the treats! And none of this basket of grapes rubbish. I'm talking chocolate and brandy - neat."

"It's a hospital, Grandma." John's voice reasons.

"And?"

"And you should know - better than most, that they're not gonna let us bring that in for you."

Grandma goes to fold her arms, then winces, with a concealed hiss.

"John. Kid. I'm old! Just stick it in a sippy cup and call it apple juice - they'll never know the difference!"

"Stop tryna...get John...into trouble."

It's a wonderful sound, hearing the deep rumble of baritone. Sally can feel a secondary tightness - one she could not attribute to her injury, leave her broken ribcage.

"Eh. Twas worth a shot." She offers up a warm smile, knowing he cannot see it - both her eldest grandsons sporting large foam trauma blocks; but she hopes he can hear the sentiment within her voice.

"Nice to have you back in the land of the living, kid!"

New gesture Emoji in Unicode 15.1: Head Shaking Horizontally and Head Shaking Vertically (aka shake and nod!), and (finally) right facing emoji

Unicode 15.1 will be rolling out to phones and computers across this year. It will include lots of new CJK (Chinese Japanese Korean) ideographs, some new line-breaking rules for syllabic scripts, and a handfull of new emoji! There's a phoenix, a breaking chain, a lime and a brown mushroom, as well as new family silhouettes and a handful of existing emoji, but now facing rightward!

Below are illustrations of the set from a recent Emojipedia summary of the 15.1 update.

The two emoji I'm most excited about are Head Shaking Horizontally and Head Shaking Vertically. That's head shaking and head nodding to you! I wrote these proposals with Jennifer Daniel and the Unicode emoji subcomittee team.

Why the more elaborate names? Well, Unicode tend to describe emoji by form, not function. That's for very good reason, because a head nod might be agreement for you, but in other cultures a vertical movement of the head can mean disagreement. This has provided a double challenge for emoji designers, who have to both show movement and also facial features that aren't too positive or negative. Below are the Emojipedia pair. They've done a great job.

These two emoji are actually made by combining a classic emoji face wtih the horizontal (🙂‍↔️) or vertical arrows (🙂‍↕️ ) using a special Unicode character called a Zero Width Joiner (ZWJ, 'zwidge' to it's friends), which means that even though they're two characters they smoosh together to create one emoji. It's the same process that makes all the different flags, as well as the gender and skin tones.

In fact, all of the emoji in 15.1 are combinations using the ZWJ mechanism; including the phoenix (🐦‍🔥), lime (🍋‍🟩) and brown mushroom (🍄‍🟫 ). Those new right-facing emoji are a combination of the usual left-facing emoji and a rightward arrow🚶‍���️ .

It's exciting that Unicode have decided to try this set of right-facing characters. Many emoji are left-facing, which is a legacy of their Japanese origins (the word order in Japan means that right-facing makes sense). I've been complaining about emoji directionality since 2015, and I'm glad that this update will mean that lil emoji dude can finally escape a burning building for those of us with a left-to-right writing system and Subject Verb Object word order. They've started with a bunch of people in motion. It will be interesting to see if this set is where it stops or not.

The use of the ZWJ is an elegant solution because it means that you don't have to make a whole new codepoint for the emoji, it just uses the old one. If someone doesn't have their phone or computer update to 15.1 then it should fall back to just showing 🚶‍➡️, which somewhat conveys the intent. That's the magic of a good ZWJ combination.

I randomly had the idea of ymbrynes with their bird feathers in their hair (Miss Peregrine would have peregrine falcon feathers in her hair, Miss Crow would have crow feathers in her hair, etc) and thought I'd share since you're a ymbryne in your dr. thoughts? :)

OH MY BIRDS YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!

We normally use our feathers as quills actually! So a lot of studying ymbrynes will keep a feather tucked in her hair or behind her ear for safe keeping, you never know when you’ll suddenly need to sign important documents or need to poke a distracting student ;)

For myself, it’s a little different

as a Phoenix ymbryne, the feathers that fall off of me while in bird form will turn to ash when I come back to my (full) human form! It doesn’t count if I have my wings out still, which I can retract as a human, but once any bird features are gone, so are the feathers, they kinda just poof into dust!

Ok I'm going into emoji expert mode for this one, that's actually a new Emoji from Emoji version 15.1, and it's a fusion emoji that evolved into full emoji.

I can see it on my end but I can't post it myself yet, and it should appear as ,🐦🔥 to anyone who doesn't have the correct display yet.

And none of the new emojis are fusion materials yet but I'll make it known as soon as I know

So, I posted elsewhere (Cold Open) the order I think the beginning of the episode will go. I am also assuming that these photos are in order (as I’ve seen others anssuming—although the hospital photos seem all over the place).

I don’t really think the Diaz parents, in the end, look angry here. They seem to calm down after they hear what Eddie has to say. They look surprised and concerned.

So, let’s hope they take Christopher for the weekend, and the trio of photos above is Buck and Eddie waiting for Chris to come home (after he’s calmed down a bit), and then the Big Conversation (Full Circle). Remember what the synopsis says: “Christopher fights to trust his dad.”

This doesn’t sound like giving up. In the synopsis, they are ALL fighting to rise up again (like a phoenix from the ashes).

In the photos of Hen and the Buckley-Hans, they are all HAPPY—including Hen. They are all in different clothes than they were wearing at the hospital (Chim’s shirt IS new—at first I thought it wasn’t). They are all smiling. This feels like good news about Hen’s situation.

It’s very confusing. But Athena has left the hospital and is On a Quest in the stills, so I suppose we can assume that Bobby is stable and awake. Otherwise, I don’t really think she’d leave. Hen looks happy. Eddie is up in the air, but I’m hopeful for the reasons given above.

OTOH, these photos may only get us 15 minutes into the episode, like last week. And we’ll get true resolution of the these two plots at the end (where these stills are the hopeful middle).

And the last 20 minutes will be Athena being kidnapped by the cartel or the hijackers. I hope Athena learned her lesson about being TSTL with Jeffrey Hudson.

⚕️- kiloran - healer!buck (who, you guessed it, is a vigilante) and civilian!bobby, lots of secret identity shenanigans hereee

🏝️- island au - angelduo & crimeboys centric, tommy goes to visit his family friend phil for the summer, very slice of life indie vibes and for fans of bee's writing, it's sim to honey and tangerines (in vibes !!). there's a lot of emotional hurt comfort and coming to terms with how you were raised and themes of growing up. godd this au makes me EMOTIONAL EUEUEU

🍍- psych x 911 - psych characters have to go to LA for a case and meet the 118 !! very fun silly shenanigans hehehe

🔍- halcyon - detective crimeboys my beloved !!!! sherlock holmes vibes, just wilbur and tommy solving crimes while slowly becoming family :)) goddd i love them SO MUCH arhghghg

🕵️ - detective 118 - so bc i loved halcyon sm, i decided i needed a detective au for 911 as well !! sooo :)) just all of the 118 as private investigators heheheh

🐦‍🔥- phoenix!buck - last but not least !! phoenix!buck. this has all of the 118 working as basically superhero firefighters. starts off as a slice of life learning to live again focused on buck&bobby (ofc) but eventually devolves into more of a dramatic hero story

sumire's not the type to blindly trust people, she's pretty cautious and prefers to take things slow when it comes to trusting others. it takes time and effort to gain her trust, kinda like a plant growing from a tiny seed, it doesn't happen overnight. she's seen her fair share of disappointments, so she's a bit guarded, you gotta show her that you're sincere and won't let her down. she's not against trusting people entirely, she just needs some valid evidence that you're worth the effort :)

🌅 (sunrise) - What does your oc look forward to every day? Do they have something to look forward to in the first place? What makes them wake up in the morning? Why do they want to be alive?

she’s not the type to have epic, grand things to look forward to every single day, but she kinda finds her joy in the little moments. like, walking by the river and appreciating the sound of the rushing water, or the anticipation of a flower blooming in her garden. these small, simple things are what make her mornings bearable. she doesn't really have any big life goals or passions that drive her, she's just kinda going through the motions, finding her happiness in the smallest of moments.

🐦‍🔥 (phoenix) - What has your oc had to overcome to get to where they are now? Were the challenges emotional or physical? Would you say they had to go through a “rebirth”? How did they change, if at all?

damn, well, sumire's gone through some stuff to get where she is now. her struggles have been mostly emotional, dealing with her insecurities and all that junk that comes with growing up. and definitely, she's had this whole like, "rebirth" thing happen. it was like a slow-ass transformation from this shy girl to someone who's still kinda awkward but actually speaks up for herself and doesn't let people walk all over her. she's also learned to rely on herself more and be like, "i don't need anyone's validation except my own"
