danandphilcrafts and the tarot's devil

a queer perspective

dan and phil crafts is a short horror film quartet created by famous queer youtubers dan howell and phil lester. there is intentional use of imagery from the devil tarot card in the climactic shot of this installment, as you can observe below:

phil has a long history of including tarot on his channel in videos such as robot death machine (2009), PREDICTING MY FUTURE! (2017), PREDICTING DAN"S FUTURE! (2017), trying to predict 2021 (2020) shorts doing readings for astrological signs on lessamazingphil (2022), and in viewers pick my birthday gifts 2024 (2024).

as someone who's been both a fan and a tarot reader for over a decade, i find this nod to the devil card one of the most essential shots in communicating the complex themes addressed in this video and the craft series as a whole.

how so? i'll start with discussion of the devil tarot card and how it relates to the lovers.

in tarot, the lovers and the devil are both a part of the major arcana, the 22 cards representing more significant, intense & impactful life moments than the cards found in the minor arcana. they are two of very few major arcana cards that mirror each other visually: the other duos in the major arcana are the high priestess + hierophant and empress + emperor. 

in both other cases, the cards hold connected meanings as applied to different areas of life, but reflect a gendered difference - the high priestess and empress are women, and the emperor and hierophant are men. from this we can conclude two things. 

first is that the connected imagery between two cards connotates connected meaning. even without the connected imagery, these cards would be an inverse of one another; they're sibling cards, sharing the same numerology (6).

so what do the lovers symbolize? the lovers symbolize healthy, balanced relational connection, collaborative communication, choice, etc. their relationship is blessed/holy/watched over by an angel. 

the devil, on the other hand, symbolizes unhealthy relational connection, exploitation, addiction, hedonism, etc. the figure in this card is the demon baphomet, and the relationship is taboo.

the other conclusion we can take from the pattern of meaning found in visually similar cards is that the variation between these cards is related to gender/sex/sexuality. 

it is extremely straightforward to conclude that the couple in the devil card differs with the couple in the lovers card by being sexually deviant in some manner, and all forms of queerness fall under the umbrella of sexual deviance. 

baphomet as the specific demon in this card ads to the overall queerness associated with the devil. i am not able to speak about it at length as i am not an occultist, but you can read at length on wikipedia. i know i’ve read good posts about baphomet from occultists on tumblr, but am struggling to find those that go into detail. what i’m able to remember is this: depictions of baphomet always show her with a mix of sex characteristics, typically both breasts and a penis, making her either transgender or intersex.

my goal with this essay is a queer reading of the devil, though, not a reification of the societal norms regarding gender and sexuality as held when the rider waite smith deck was created in 1909. we can queer the devil by being critical of the institutions and social norms that name the deviance depicted in the devil as bad.

when doing this, the devil can become an empowering figure signifying acceptance of and actualization of queer sexuality, rejection of internalized homophobia and transphobia, freedom from normative expectations, solidarity taking action, and connection with/creation of community. 

you can see similar subversions of christian ideas of the devil in the work of lil nas x, particularly in the music video for MONTERO (call me by your name) - it’s a common queer theme. the rates at which satanic imagery and touch between two men appear increase both rapidly and in tandem with each successive video in the DanAndPhilCRAFTS back catalogue.

i'm not going to delve too deep into past videos, but i will mention that the horror in the first three exists largely in implication: the pentagram in glitter faces is has happened before and happens whether they're trying to make it or not; the "he" they are "friends" with in potato prints never appears onscreen.

tying this back to the devil as a card that stands in opposition to societal homophobia and gender roles, the first indications of this theme appear in DanAndPhilCRAFTS-Slime's opening still:

and the dialogue taking place from 0:17 to 0:24 of the video, which i've transcribed below.

DAN: We've had important events to prepare for. PHIL: I've been in a box. [footage of a presumably deceased PHIL from DanAndPhilCRAFTS - Potato Prints] DAN: They tried to stop us. PHIL: But they didn't.

from these two moments in the film, we can infer that the "they" who tried to stop dan and phil includes the church of england, and that phil's death at the end of the previous video was not permanent.

how does the story change if our baseline assumption is to trust its protagonists rather than the vague "they" trying to stop them, the "they" who recovered the footage?

on that note: how does the fact that dan and phil came out between potato prints and slime impact the way that the story is consumed, and the way that the story is depicted?

i am not well versed in horror. i cannot meaningfully speak to the tradition of horror and its elements and how they manifest in this film particularly.

i can point out what i can identify as worth talking about: the things that are portrayed as horrific. the presence of blood; to lose one's life - specifically to kill or be killed by a penetrating weapon; allying oneself with demonic forces. to my knowledge there's a lot to dig into with that, both regarding horror in general and horror through the lens of queer analysis.

what i'm able to come up with is this: blood is a bodily fluid disease can pass through, and there's a lot of history there with both AIDS and more recently monkeypox; many people lose the life they had before when they come out; i don't think i even need to elaborate about penetration; religious homophobia's insistence that queerness is of the devil is extremely old news.

i would love for someone more versed in horror and queerness than I am to elaborate where i can't.

something i can elaborate on is this: how the video was received.

this video wasn't posted to the gaming channel or either main channel; the only people who will have seen it are people who never unsubscribed to the crafts channel or people who are connected to phannie spaces. this core swath of dan and phil's audience primarily consists of queer people: those of us who are aware of their relationship. those of us who are in on the joke.

to a cisheteroallo audience, especially one completely unfamiliar with dan and phil, this video would likely be experienced as straightforwardly scary. this hypothetical audience doesn't know, as we do, that it's deeply unrealistic that dan or phil would ever harm one another as depicted in the film.

the reactions i have seen in phannie spaces have all found and delighted in the humor in it, and many have enjoyed the well executed horror. but beyond that, this queer audience widely perceives and enjoys the eroticism of the film.

there is intimacy in the violence, and a thrill in the transgressions required for two people to align themselves with the figure of the devil.

something i particularly enjoy: despite the sources of horror i listed earlier, none of them result in consequences for the characters dan and phil play. they end this film in a place of power beside the devil figure. what is frightening is the threat they pose to the "they" who tried to stop them, the threat they pose to institutional cisheteroallo normativity.

the way that DanAndPhilCRAFTS - Slime presents imagery from the tarot's devil card is unequivocally, undeniably queer and in opposition to oppressive structures. the way this film expresses ideas is incredibly coherent, and the nod to tarot serves it so well to that end!

A/N: This is gonna be pretty vanilla, but also fluffy and cute! :)

It’s a huge mess, but in a good kind of way

You’re completely spoiled with these two

They give you all the cuddles and hugs and kisses

And can’t help buying you cute presents

Or just things you like, they love spoiling you

First and foremost, they’re your best friends

So you do everything together and feel comfortable around them

You can be yourself with them and the other way around you

You play videogames, go out to eat sometimes...

All things friends do, hanging out and doing fun stuff

But also talk about what’s worrying you and venting

Having a shoulder to cry on or just someone to keep you company

And it goes the other way around too, you’re there for them as well

It’s a very healthy and reciprocal relationship

Thing is, Dan usually starts the joking insults

And then Phil joins in and it’s hilarious

Because Phil’s insults are oddly cute and not offensive

Using them as pillows all day every day

Say, you’re sitting on Dan’s lap but your legs are on Phil’s

You’re also their official pillow too, with you in the middle

And the two of them hugging you with their head on your shoulders

You feel so enveloped and cozy, like two big spoons

They both love you a whole lot and plenty of affection ensues

Random hugs, compliments, kisses and hand holding

Remember the alliances against you? This goes for affection too

They will see how much they can embarrass you with compliments

Dan especially, he enjoys watching you blush because it’s cute

‘Y/N sandwich’ hugs are a thing, they do happen

When you hear any of them say those words you run

Because they squash you between them, even if it’s kinda cozy too

Having a group text chat with the three of you

Full of memes, stupidness and inside jokes

Picking each other’s presents together

Which also means surprises are planned together as well

Mostly Dan and Phil plan things for you

Dan really doesn’t like surprises

Convincing them to actually go outside instead of staying in

Even if you love hanging around with them at home

Forbidden Love (Part 1)

Dan Howell x Reader, Phil Lester x Reader

Summary: You never had much luck when it came to love, and had your heart broken more than once. So when your friendship with Phil started to blossom into a relationship, you felt like it was the right choice. The ever so sweet Phil Lester seemed like a safe bet. Everything could be so perfect, if it wasn’t for Dan’s sudden weird behaviour and the growing tension between the two of you that could change everything…

It had all started when Phil asked you out on a date a few months ago. At the time, you had never considered Phil as something more than one of your best friends. But once he asked, you began to see him in a different light. He was sweet and attentive, and all so different from the men you had dated before. After a tumoultous breakup a little while ago, being with him now  seemed like a safe bet. A natural transition from great friendship to an even better relationship, is what you had hoped. 

So, you agreed to the date. And a month later,  when Phil asked you to make things official, you agreed again. Even though there was a quiet voice in the back of your head telling you not to. But we all have doubts, don't we? At least that's what you told yourself.

"Phil, are you ready to get your ass kicked?" Dan's cheerful voice echoed through the apartment, and you could hear the sound of the front door closing behind him. He entered the living room,  noticing that you and Phil were cuddled together on the couch. 

"Oh Y/N, didn't know you'd be here too." You couldn't help but notice the change in his tone of voice once he had spotted you. He seemed almost annoyed at your presence. "I thought just the two of us were going to play Mario Kart."

"Well I knew you wouldn't mind Y/N being here, so I invited her." Phil responded friendly, seemingly oblivious to Dan's weird attitude. 

"I'm just going to get us some snacks from the kitchen and then we can start," Phil added, and pressed a quick kiss to your lips before getting up from the couch. 

With that, he left Dan and you alone in the room. Normally, the two of you would be talking and laughing like crazy right now, just enjoying each other's company. After all, just like Phil, Dan had been one of your best friends for years now. But lately, nothing between you both had felt normal. Ever since you had begun dating Phil, Dan was behaving oddly. You figured that maybe he felt like a third wheel, and had to get adjusted to the fact that you all weren't just a simple group of friends anymore. But even though you tried your best to understand him, it still didn't quite make sense. 

Luckily, before the awkward silence could continue any longer, Phil reentered the room with his hands full of snacks. 

 "Come on, let's start the game." Your boyfriend sat down next to you, handing you a bag of crisps before he grabbed his controller.

Dan finally followed as well, and sat down on the other end of the couch. You noticed how he  left as much space as possible between him and the two of you. While Phil turned the console on, you let your gaze wander from the TV over to Dan again. His eyes trailed around the room, seemingly looking at everything else but you and the way Phil was cuddled into your side. 

"Y/N, you're missing the start of the race." Phil nudged your side, and averted your eyes from Dan back to the screen. It was true, you had been so fixated on him and his weird behaviour that you hadn't even paid attention to Mario Kart.  

Once you had managed to focus on the game again, the evening began to almost feel like old times again. Well, almost. Dan still wasn't being his old self. Instead of jokingly raging whenever he lost a round or bragging whenever he won, he just kept quiet. And even though you tried your best to ignore it and concentrate on the TV in front of you, you still couldn't quite let it go.

"Do you think Dan's being weird lately?" You whispered to Phil, using the opportunity to talk to your boyfriend in private after Dan had gotten up to go to the toilet.

"Maybe a bit quiet, but you know how he sometimes gets like that." Phil responded, his voice as quiet as yours. 

"I don't know, it just seems different this time." You argued, but Phil didn't seem to be convinced. 

"I think it's just Dan being Dan. He probably just had a bad day and will be back to normal tomorrow." Your boyfriend responded, not really worried about the whole situation. 

And maybe you shouldn't worry, too. Maybe it was just Dan having a few bad days. Or.. maybe your intuition didn't fail you and there was something more behind your best friend's weird behaviour.

"But,-" You didn't get to start your answer, as Dan entered the room the moment you began to speak. You quickly pulled away from where you had been whispering into Phil's ear.

"I'm not in the mood to play anymore." Dan announced as his eyes fell on you pulling away from being so close to Phil. "I'm going to bed." You knew exactly that Dan normally never went to bed at a time this early, but you repressed making any comment about it.

"Yeah, I'm starting to feel tired too." Phil tried to defuse the tension in the room, thinking that it might be better for everyone to start fresh tomorrow.

"Y/N, are you joining me?" He added, standing up and gesturing towards his bedroom. "Yeah, I'll be there in a second." You responded absentmindely, and Phil nodded before disappearing into his bedroom.

Now it was just you and Dan alone again, and the latter did his best to get out of the situation as quickly as possible. "I'm just gonna grab a glass of water before going to bed." He mumbled, turning his back on you and hurrying into the kitchen. He didn't seem to be able to spend even one second alone with you, and you couldn't bear it any longer. So, with quick steps, you followed Dan into the kitchen.

"Hey, can I ask you something?" You spoke up, but Dan didn't react. He kept his back turned to you, searching the cupboard for a glass. "Dan?" You repeated, and after a few seconds passed you could finally hear a quiet "What?" from the other.

"What's going on with you?" You asked rather bluntly, not being able to keep the question in after having been on your mind for such a long time now. 

"Nothing." Dan huffed, not bothering to face you.

"You won't talk to me, you're not even looking at me. Of course there's something going on.”

"There is nothing going on." Dan repeated, finally turning around, the glass he had searched for now in his hand. His gaze still didn't meet yours. "Now can you move away from the sink, I want some water from the tap." 

"Dan." You answered, your tone hushed. "You know you can talk to me. Just tell me. Is there something I did to offend you, or-"

"I don't want to talk, I just want some damn water right now." Dan's tone started to change from simply annoyed to angry, but you weren't going to back down now. If he acted like this, you just needed to know why. So, you continued to block the sink with your body, even as Dan took a step closer to you to try and reach his goal.

"I'll leave you to it once you talk to me. Seriously, what's going on?" You asked him again, getting more irritated with every second that passed. "This has been going on for weeks, I-”

"It's really none of your business," Dan suddenly snapped before you could even finish your sentence. "Just leave it alone, Y/N."

Dan abruptly reached behind you and finally managed to get his glass under the tab, his body now dangerously close to yours. You could feel the heat radiating of his figure, and it sent a shiver down your spine. You didn't dare to move, the sudden tension in the room freezing your movements. And instead of just filling up his water and leaving the room as you expected, Dan's body seemed to freeze to. The anger he had shown before had disappeared from his body language.

Slowly, Dan let his glass slide out of his hand, the sound of its substance clashing against the metal sink ringing through your ears.  A deafening silence followed, with neither of you daring to pull away from the other. You felt Dan's breath on your neck, and it sent tingles through your whole body. 

"Dan.." You whispered, turning your head ever so slightly so you could look into his eyes. And finally, for the first time in what seemed like an eternity, Dan looked back into yours. The intensity of his gaze nearly made you stutter as you continued your sentence. "Please. Just talk to me."

"Y/N," Dan's voice was the softest you had ever heard it, and you could see in his eyes that he was trying to come up with an answer for you. But.. he didn't. Instead, Dan leaned forward and in a spur of a moment, his lips landed on yours. Your knees nearly gave up under you. 

He wrapped his arm around you, and your hand found its way onto his neck, pulling him closer into this tender embrace. The world seemed to stop, at least for a moment.

"Guys?" A voice rang through the hallway, and it took you both a second to register it as PhiI's, "I heard some glass breaking, are you okay?" 

And with a swift movement, the door to the kitchen flew open.
