Highway Cavalier and Dulcinea

Fifth in the “Putting Alice into Nort’s Skin Lines” project

They would tell tales of thee, if they knew thee, my Dulcinea. Instead, I, thy humble vassal, thy cavalier of the highway, tell tales of thee. A lady of grace and poise, riding astride your piebald hackney, hair of gold plaited back, eyes like suns beneath your goggles, hands like ivory steering your noble steed – any beam of the sun of thy beauty that reached my eyes would have given light to my reason and strength to my heart, so that I could be unmatched and unequaled in wisdom and valor. Thou hast strayed away from El Toboso, and yet I cannot seek thee.

Highway Cavalier obviously based on Don Quixote with ‘the Cavalier’ and ‘Rocinante’, so Alice was a natural fit for a Dulcinea, a remote and far off lover who the cavalier acts for.

I imagine Alice died prior to the events of the story but maybe she’s just far far away…

Ok so the typical motorcycle jacket we think of wasn’t in production until at least the 20s but I figured a short riding coat would make sense. We do have motorcycle riding in this period (motor corps in World War I!) plus riding gear is consistent between that and horses.

The pants with the knee-reinforcements are normal, so I kept them but they’re not… jeans. His undershirt is a regular stand-up collar shirt – protective, but not whatever he’s got for padding there.

Alice’s design:

So women also had a motorcycle corps in World War I which is pretty cool. Their coats tended to be longer and somewhat fuller, with most of the shaping coming from the belting and some very heavy pleats in the waist. These were, quite spiffily, worn with a shirtwaist and tie. Pants/ jodhpurs were common (split skirts were too, the point being you NEED to ride astride on a motorcycle.)

The motorcycle they’re leaning on is hers, which is a contemporary Phelon & Moore 500cc single cylinder motorcycle. 

This is the age of no helmets. So. No helmets.

Journeyman Appreciation: Bryan Reffner

Much like my previous entry in these journeyman appreciation posts, Bryan Reffner is a guy who owes much of his name recognition to the creation of the Truck series in the mid-90s and the opportunities it created for many drivers outside the Mid-Atlantic developmental norm. After years of doing short track racing, including a number of part-time seasons with solid results in the legendary upper midwestern ARTGO Series, Bryan finally got a chance at the midwestern big time by running ASA full-time in ‘94 and ‘95 when he was already into his early 30s, finishing 11th in points with 7 top 10s his first season before finishing 13 out of 16 races in the top 10 the next season, with 9 top 5s, two wins and the ASA National Tour title. 

Bryan’s Truck career started off pretty damn well for Mark Simo, earning 3 top 5s and 9 top 10s en route to becoming the first ever Craftsman Truck Series Rookie of the Year and finishing solidly in 9th spot in points. Then the roller coaster began. In 1997 he switched over sports car racer Dale Phelon’s team which through a high number of crashes and engine failures, matched with an apparent just lack of speed, resulted in just a couple top 10s and a pretty dismal 19th place finish in points. Despite the rough season, he returned with Phelon the next year and considerably improved his performance but was still released before the season ended and had to piece together the rest of the season by running for 5 different truck owners over the course of just 9 races and despite running a good chunk of the season in the top 10 in points ultimately didn’t even finish in the top 20s with much of these final races resulting in DNFs though he was just one top 5 short of his first season. 

1999 would see Bryan Reffner reduced to racing part-time for lower budget owner John Conely, running just 13 of the races and finishing nearly half of them solidly in the top 20 despite their limitations, which helped convince Indycar owner John Menard to hire the fellow midwesterner for his new Truck series team in 2000 which proved to be the highlight season of Bryan’s whole career. He scored a victory at Texas and finished inside the top 10 a full 16 times to return to 9th in series points. He looked like he could be a force to contend with the next season and he had a couple top 10s before Menard suspended the team’s operation after just 4 races amidst the Dotcom bust recession in full force at that time. And just like that, sadly, his NASCAR career was effectively over. From that point, he’d make just 9 more Truck series starts through 2003 with his last top 10 coming at Phoenix in the fall of ‘01, 3 Busch series starts through 2005, one Cup DNQ in ‘05. Outside of some sporadic events in other series, he would effectively end his full-time driving career back in ASA as an owner-driver where he was very competitive, finishing 6th his first year back and winning a race while finishing runner up in the final year of the National Tour in 2004.

Unlike fellow ASA champions of his era who made it to NASCAR like Johnny Benson or Tony Raines, Bryan Reffner never got the gift of steady employment over multiple years with a team let alone the chance to race seriously in Busch or Cup, but he was a driver who showed a lot of speed when you could give him a competent truck and a huge “What If” for me is what would have happened had he and the Menard team been allowed to grow longer than just a year a change. He was the type of solid journeyman the Truck series desperately needed in its early years but likely deserved to be more.

A two-wheeled motorized bicycle with an electric motor to assist with peddling is known as a motorized bicycle. You've probably either heard of one or had one happen to you. How Do The Motors Of Motorized Bicycles Work?

Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy fundamentally. Unlike traditional electric motors, which required brushes to change the direction of current flow to the motor, motorized bicycles utilize brushless DC motors, commonly known as BLDC motors. For more than ten years, brushless motors have been the norm because their brushes reduced the motors' efficiency and had a tendency to wear out over time.

Many cables can be seen wrapping around a ring of poles when a BLDC motor is opened. The stator turns becomes an electromagnet when the motor controller injects current into the cables coming from the battery. Additionally, a row of circular permanent magnets will be visible either inside or outside the stator. The magnets' relationship to the stator may alter depending on the type of BLDC motor, but the rotor is always present.

Knowing how the rotor and stator interact is necessary to comprehend how e-bike motors work. When current flows through them in a circular pattern, spinning the stator, the electromagnets on the stator attract and repel the permanent magnets on the rotor. The stator is joined with a shaft. The shaft of the mid-drive motor is connected to a tiny chainring, which harnesses the torque created by the rotation of the shaft to help you pedal.

In hub motors, the shaft acts as the axle rather than rotating. Instead, the rotor of the motor turns independently, turning the hub as a whole and producing the required torque to drive either the front or back wheel.

The History Of Motorized Bicycles!

In an effort to power manual vehicles, experimenters put steam engines into tricycles and quads in the late 19th century, which is where the history of motorized bicycles began.

It was challenging to successfully employ steam engines and other technologies to drive bicycles at the time due to the lack of accessible technology. 

The first usable method of powering foot-pedal bikes was developed before the turn of the 20th century with the development of the gas-powered internal combustion engine.

French motorbike inventor Felix Millet created one of the earliest gas engines for motorized bicycles in 1892. The "Millet motorcycle" included pedals and an engine positioned on the back wheel. 

One of the first powered bike businesses in England was Phelon & Rayner, which ran from 1901 to 1903.

Their motorized bicycle consisted of a 28-inch bike frame that was simply connected to a 260 cc, 1.75 horsepower gas engine.

Around the middle of the 20th century, businesses started making progressively more sophisticated motorized vehicles, such as mopeds and scooters. Bike owners in England, the US, and other countries started to accept low-cost DIY bicycle motors at the same time.

Sleeker designs, more effective motors and mounts, and a focus on environmental preservation are all products of modern technology.

Motorized bicycles are still highly popular today, as they have been for the previous century, thanks to kits that now come with more compact, powerful engines and cutting-edge design components.
