im not going to get into a discussion on the ethicalities of art including nsfw art imo alls fair in rpf if fanfic is fine then why not art y’know but my mind keeps going back to the real part of the show yday when phil is talking he’s specifically referring to the past when people blew up every little detail and tried to out them and imo if we are gonna talk about art “objectifying” them people used to draw some freakyyyy stuff in 2015 like any one piece from that era is so much worse than anything you would find today and I’m not shaming those people or anything but in my personal opinion dnp have drawn boundaries for themselves in interacting with us too like for example if they’re doing a twitter or tumblr video now they ask for submissions or there’s a specific tag so it’s like we’re allowed to have our specific art and fic it’s not all for them to see you know? back then they would constantly be exposed to that stuff just on their dashes or for a video and tagged in it and that’s just what the internet was like unfortunately and maybe that would make me a little uncomfortable too esp if I wasn’t out and they had to present as bros all the time. but I need people to know he’s not saying art is bad like imo two of the most popular phanartists in this era are ones that they’ve commissioned art from literally ones of them as sexy little catboys and they know they see the other stuff and clearly like it so idk what kind of point I’m trying to make here but phanartists keep doing what you’re doing

Why do the Broadway actors always use so much vibrato? it's really off-putting at times.

There's been a lot of speculation about that over the years, as far back as 2009 if you look at this thread on Deserted Phans, and I kind of agree that at this point, it seems to be just a cultural thing, a way that a lot of American musical theatre actors are taught to sing, though I also think the Broadway production also tended to push singers towards this kind of sound.

At any rate, I agree it can be off-putting, but at the same time, I sometimes compare them to Christines in the West End who, honestly speaking, don't have enough vibrato and come off more pop singer than opera star, if you know what I mean. I don't think it's been as much of an issue in recent years - I feel like the direction now is to make the two more similar and narrow the gap between them - but there was a good decade or so of some rather squeaky Christines. Basically going too far in the opposite direction, you know?

Anyway, this is why many of my favorites, vocally speaking, tend to come from international productions: so much variety in voices, so many singers with grand, classical, or operatic vocals without becoming overbearing.

i voted spirk because spirk fan zines set a lot of the standards and conventions in fan spaces back in the 70s and the spirk fanbase has stayed roughly the same size for the last like 60 years.

but it was a tricky choice with johnlock merthur klance and phan there.

johnlock set standards for the ship stans and pulled fan/showrunner drama into fan spaces in ways that had happened before but that hadn't been as central to entire fandoms like that on that scale. it also managed to become a major part of general internet memeage because of its superwholock-iness.

merthur is a ship that is quietly influential. a lot of royalty aus pull influence from them across many fandoms, and there are plotlines and character arcs in all of Merlin that pop up again and again. but Merlin and Arthur themselves have such a... specific thing going on that it has become ingrained in many fanspaces subconsciously. it, like spirk, had managed to maintain its fandom size despite being a complete show with no sign of more canon content. it's the type of ship and show that crawls into your brain and comes back every few months.

klance was, well klance. they were the pinnacle of Tumblr-at-its-peak toxic fandom. there were corners of positivity, but it was full of wacky discourse and genuine drama. i personally never touched it with a 10 foot pole because i was afraid of it. even though I liked the first season of Voltron (before it started getting weird). it was, like johnlock, a turning point in ship standom. there was a shift in general fandom etiquette and the way people talked to and about showrunners and actors because of how dangerous and extreme the klance people got. have you ever seen a ship name censored? that was at least popularized if not created specifically for this ship. a lot of the conventions for "actually just insane discourse" that we have today came from klance. there are things that predate them obviously, but they have had a massive impact on how toxic discourse gets formatted and discussed. and on how fans can impact canon when they aren't careful. and how people respond to explicit queer baiting.

and phan was massively influential for a specific group. if you were a girl or gay who was 12-17 between 2010-2016, there is a high probability that they were your introduction to fandom. they were so many peoples first steps in fan culture. most of my fandom peers learned to navigate ao3 tagging and Tumblr discourse with this ship as a guide. it was also many peoples first and only rpf fandom. at its peak, it brought up several legitimate ethical questions about rpf fic and about creator participation in fandom in general. it created a blurred line between characters and people for a lot of fan creators and it was a lot of peoples introduction to the parasocial aspect of internet fandom. it also broke containment of fandom like superwholock did, becoming a major part of general internet memeage.

honorable mentions to sterek and reddie. sterek was another widely accepted active queerbait and the ripples of that have been pretty influential. the wolf mechanics of the show have also been very influential to non abo werewolf aus. and reddie admittedly probably had a relatively small sphere that it influenced, but for those that were in it at is peak, they are everywhere. their dynamic is easy to play from. and they gave a good addition to the pool of influence for "astranged childhood friend/crush to adult gay awakening" fics. they also have a special in my heart because i love them so much.

“Orchard Jenga,” Temple of Urban Food, Melbourne, Australia,

The still images represent the internal space of an indoor urban farming system.

In collaboration with the aquaponic farming tower, this large open space is proposed to be transferred into a public multi-level square. Here, flower garden covering on the top, underneath, the supporting structure is framed by a 5x5m grid which creates a semi-open outdoor gallery or pop-up hawker market.

Part of the products coming from the urban farm could be distributed into this market where cultural and educational activities related to urban farming can be held to raise the awareness of a food-lacking future.

[Commissioned by @arachcobra​. Like with some of the other pop culture conversions I’ve written, there has been so much written about Warhammer’s skaven that my version cannot possibly hope to cover all of it. So rather than doing a 100% faithful recreation, I have blended the Warhammer version with PFRPG canon. Namely to address that more benevolent ratfolk already exist in the setting. I dabbled with giving them racial HD before deciding to go in a playable race direction. Murnath the Horned Rat appears in Book of the Damned, and I assume he is intended as a Warhammer homage, so bringing him in seemed a natural fit.]

Skaven CR 1/3 CE Humanoid This humanoid stands a head shorter than a human, with slumped posture. They appear like a humanoid rat with sharp teeth and beady eyes. They are dressed in patchwork armor and carry a sword and shield.

The skaven are a mutated offshoot of the ratfolk created by mad science and demonic intervention. The first skavens were ratfolk mutated by exposure to Abyssal energy. They grew in size and their minds warped towards savage evil, escaping from their captors and creating their own cultish society. Almost all skaven are zealously devoted to Murnath, the Horned Rat, and believe that they were created by his blessing. Skaven speak Queekish, a high-speed pidgin of Aklo, Abyssal and Undercommon.

Skavens are fractious and violent, devoted to their clans above all others. Hierarchy is important among skavens is important, with the strong dominating the weak, and individuals constantly seeking out the weaknesses of their peers for opportunities to advance. Occasionally a powerful demagogue will be able to unite clans to form armies against other species and cultures, but they spend much of their energy warring against each other. Skaven society is grossly misogynistic—female skavens are referred to as “breeders”, and few female skavens advance far without disguising themselves or escaping their clans and setting out on their own. Most skavens are brown or grey, but those with unusual fur colors are often collected and raised from an early age for service to a particular faction. Black skavens are trained as assassins, and white skavens are seen as destined for the priesthood.

Skavens advance by character class. The skaven statistics below represent a skaven “slave rat”, fit mostly for manual labor and disposable in combat. Those of higher rank take levels in PC classes—fighter, barbarian, gunslinger and alchemist are commonly taken. Black-furred skaven typically advance as rogues or slayers, training for the assassin or shadowdancer prestige classes. White-furred skaven typically advance as oracles or sorcerers, or both as mystic theurges.

Skaven as Player Characters A skaven does not have racial Hit Dice, and advances by character level. A skaven’s racial traits are as follows +2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Wis Skavens are nimble and hardy, but reckless and cowardly Humanoid A skaven is a humanoid with the ratfolk subtype Medium size A skaven suffers no penalties and gains no benefits from its size Normal Speed A skaven moves at 30 ft. Darkvision 60 ft. Scent A skaven gains scent, as per the universal monster quality Squalid A skaven gains a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against disease, poison and any spell or effect that causes the sickened or nauseated condition Light Sensitivity A skaven takes a -1 penalty to attack rolls in bright light Bite A skaven gains a bite attack as a primary natural weapon that deals 1d4 points of damage. When attacking with a weapon, this becomes a secondary natural attack. Languages Skaven begin play speaking Queekish. A skaven with an Intelligence bonus can select from the following bonus languages: Abyssal, Aklo, Draconic, Common, Dwarven, Gnoll, Goblin, Orc, and Undercommon.

Why Heathcliff is better than the Phantom of the Opera (no offense to Phantom phans)

In honor of Emily Brontë’s birthday, I’ve decided to share some more thoughts I’ve been having about Heathcliff.

@astrangechoiceoffavourites recently reblogged an excellent discussion of Heathcliff that emerged from a discussion of popular romantic pairings from The 100. Since I don’t know The 100 (only that the Bury Your Gays killing of the character Lexa sparked massive outrage in 2016), I’m not reblogging that post. But the Wuthering Heights commentary was very similar to what I had recently been thinking as I compared Heathcliff to another brooding, passionate, tragic anti-hero who tends to be over-romanticized in pop culture: the Phantom of the Opera. Comparing those two men shows just how different two characters of that basic Romantic type can be, and even though both characters treat women badly, if I had to say which one was a better romantic partner from a feminist viewpoint, I would definitely choose Heathcliff.

(Note: I haven’t read the novel of The Phantom of the Opera. I only know the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.)

First and foremost, Heathcliff never tries to control Cathy.

The two of them are close to the same age and grow up as foster siblings. They play together and ramble over the moors as an almost interchangeable, genderless pair of wild children. Cathy is actually the more dominant of the two, as Heathcliff is described as always following her and doing everything she tells him to do. Each relates to the other as their “own being” and “soul”; not as a traditional male lover and female beloved, but as spiritual twins. Cathy is no innocent, delicate object of desire, but just as fierce, inherently rugged, iron-willed and morally dark gray as Heathcliff himself – and Heathcliff wouldn’t have her any other way.

True, Heathcliff does control and abuse his power over other women, namely his wife Isabella and the younger Catherine Linton. He does the same with his son Linton and his ward Hareton too. But never his beloved Cathy.

The Phantom is much older than Christine and her teacher too. This creates a power imbalance from the start. Christine is a classic ingenue and the Phantom takes advantage of her naïveté and vulnerability, letting her believe he’s an “angel of music” sent from heaven by her deceased father. He loves her, yes, but also wants to use her voice as a tool to share his music with the world. Their relationship is heavily defined by his controlling her and her “serving” him. He relishes his power over her.

Then there’s the issue of entitlement.

Admittedly, Heathcliff does accuse Cathy of having “treated [him] infernally” by choosing Edgar Linton over him, and later implies that she had no “right’ to do so. But he explicitly only feels this way because he knows Cathy loves him and only turned her back on him because of his lowly status – not because he thinks he deserves her on any merit of his own. Nor does he ever accuse Cathy of betraying him, only of betraying her own heart. Tom Hardy’s 2009 TV Heathcliff’s sending her a message saying “I know you have betrayed me” is purely an invention for the screen, as is his telling her she disgusts him because she’s slept with Edgar. Brontë’s Heathcliff never says or does any such things. Nor does he seek any revenge on her. He explicitly denies wanting that. He marries Edgar’s sister Isabella to spite Edgar by gaining a claim to inherit his property and fortune – not, as some adaptations would have us think, to hurt Cathy the way she hurt him.

The Phantom feels entitled to Christine’s love because he taught her to sing and made her an opera star. When she falls in love with Raoul rather than him, he considers it a betrayal and vows to make her “curse the day” she did it.

Even though Heathcliff disdains Cathy’s marriage, he also respects that on some level she does care for Edgar. Unlike in some adaptations, he never tries to convince her to leave her husband or commit adultery with him. He also makes it clear that he won’t kill or physically harm Edgar, even though he wants to, because it would make Cathy unhappy. This is why he seeks psychological and legal revenge on him instead.

The Phantom kidnaps Christine, forces her to put on a wedding dress, and then traps Raoul in a noose and threatens to hang him unless Christine agrees to stay with him forever.

Granted, the Phantom redeems himself in the end by letting Christine and Raoul go. Heathcliff “stands unredeemed,” as Charlotte Brontë wrote, and never shows any remorse for his actions.

And granted, Heathcliff engages in plenty of abuse, manipulation, and oppressive control over vulnerable young people within his power. He does this to Isabella, to young Catherine, to Linton and to Hareton. But not to Cathy. It’s interesting that he never does to Cathy any of the disturbing things the Phantom does to Christine “because he loves her,” but he does do similar things to her daughter, whom he hates and uses only as a pawn.

I’m certainly not claiming Heathcliff is a good person or a romantic hero. I never would. But one thing I can say in his defense is that he never sets out to control the woman he loves, nor does he treat her like a possession instead of a person or punish her when she shows autonomy. Other brooding anti-hero lovers might do all of that, but not Heathcliff.
