Domenica 8 gennaio 2023 (ore 18) lo straordinario violinista Giuliano Carmignola inaugurerà la stagione 2023 dell’Ente Concerti di Pesaro con un omaggio ad Antonio Vivaldi e Johann Sebastian Bach. Degno partner sul palco del Teatro Sperimentale sarà Daniele Orlando, primo violino e solista dell’orchestra I Solisti Aquilani. Carmignola è considerato tra i massimi interpreti del barocco italiano. Le sue registrazioni discografiche di Vivaldi, presenti nella prima parte del concerto, hanno fatto storia. La seconda parte del concerto è dedicata a Johann Sebastian Bach, con il celebre concerto in Re minore per due violini e orchestra. Un concerto scintillante, imperdibile, che esalta il virtuosismo barocco e la grande tradizione violinistica italiana. Annoverato fra i più grandi violinisti attivi nel panorama internazionale, Giuliano Carmignola ha iniziato la carriera come solista sotto la guida di direttori d’orchestra quali Claudio Abbado, Eliahu Inbal, Peter Maag e Giuseppe Sinopoli, esibendosi nelle più prestigiose sale da concerto del mondo. PETER MAAG conducts the PARIS CONSERVATOIRE ORCHESTRA Rossini Overtures. Rare 1960 UK first issue 4-track STEREO vinyl LP on the deep groove 'wide band' black & silver Decca label with 'original recording by' perimeter text, front laminated picture sleeve. The vinyl shows minimal sign of play with wonderfully clean labels and no real spindle wear visible; playtesting results in little ambient sound in quiet passages leaving the vinyl graded as Excellent. The sleeve has a little light creasing with just light ringwear on the unlaminated reverse with no seam splits or tears, which for this early, flimsy sleeve is a fantastic achievement! Film: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri of TBOM indien je (zoals mij) lak hebt aan lange namen herhaaldelijk schrijven, is een zeer aangename en grijpende film. De cast bestond uit enkele geweldige acteurs en actrices, onze protagoniste werd gespeeld door Frances McDormand en werd ondersteund door een stevige resem “A-listers” onder wie Woody Harrelson (Natural Born Killers), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) en Sam Rockwell. Ze halen ieder het onderste uit de kan in deze film en loonde, Rockwell ontving voor zijn moeite een Academy Award for Best Supporting Role. Ik vond de film een schoolvoorbeeld voor karakterwerk in films. Elk personage is op zijn eigen manier absurd, wat vermakend is maar realistisch genoeg om je emotioneel in de film te betrekken. De film eindigt met een open einde (spoiler ?!) en laat je achter met een wrang gevoel in je maag, doelbewust uiteraard. Anders dan het eens zijn met de algemene consensus kan ik moeilijk. De film was uitstekend en een van de betere films uit 2017-2018.

De meeste dokters weten: het is heel moeilijk om patiënten die het zelf hebben opgegeven, nog beter te maken. Mitchel, onze diabeet die inmiddels al weken bij ons is, had eerst een teenamputatie nodig, toen de hele voet, toen het onderbeen en uiteindelijk het bovenbeen. De wonden waren thuis al te lang genegeerd, de bacteriën te diep doorgedrongen. Daarnaast raakte elke operatiewond geïnfecteerd of stierf de huid over de stomp af. Ook moest Mitchel leren om zijn suikerziekte te beheersen, en op een andere manier gaan eten, waar hij zelf allemaal andere ideeën over had. Zelfs Stella, onze diëtiste en een van de koppigste mensen in het ziekenhuis, kreeg hem amper bijgestuurd. Mitchel was al nooit de actiefste patiënt, maar naar mate de weken in onze afdeling verstreken werd hij steeds magerder en bedlegeriger. Vorige week zei hij: “Laat maar, ik ga dood. Ik voel het.” Zo slecht lag hij er niet bij, maar het was duidelijk dat hij het zelf had opgegeven. Kort erna ontwikkelde hij een gastroparese (een maagverlamming), en braakte voortdurend alles uit. We hebben hem nog een maagsonde gegeven en allerlei medicijnen om de maag weer op gang te brengen, maar Mitchel was het al snel zat en trok de sonde er zelf weer uit. Met maag en darmen pas weer een klein beetje op gang, besloot de man vervolgens een forse bal ugali te gaan eten, wat ongeveer de consistentie heeft van vette klei. Begrijpelijkerwijs gaven zijn darmen er toen helemaal de brui aan. Mitchel vond het mooi geweest, en weigerde elke verdere behandeling. Vanochtend overleed hij op de afdeling. Zijn vrouw, die wel vaak naast hem zat, maar met wie hij slaande ruzie had omdat hij zo koppig en inert was, werd alleen maar vrolijker naar mate hij achteruit ging. Bij het overlijden heeft ze nog even de hele afdeling bij elkaar geschreeuwd, zoals dat hoort, maar kort daarna was ze alweer in prima stemming. Je hebt hier weinig scheidingen, maar dat betekent niet dat elk huwelijk gelukkig is.

Eerder schreef ik over Lucas, de jongen die een nieuwe hartklep nodig had vanwege acuut reuma en die we daarvoor naar Dar es Salaam hadden gestuurd. Twee maanden lang werd elk verzoek tot informatie genegeerd, en hebben we geen dokter daar te spreken gekregen. Ook Save a Child’s Heart Foundation, dat de operatie zou betalen, liet maar niet van zich horen. De moeder van Lucas vroeg wel af en toe of we een rekening wilden betalen vanuit het poor patient fund, maar had er allemaal te weinig verstand van om ons te kunnen vertellen wat er aan de hand was. Tot we op een dag een foto krijgen van Lucas, met een groot sternotomielitteken op de borst, wat betekent dat hij een openhartoperatie heeft gehad. Een litteken dat er bovendien twee a drie weken oud uit ziet. Er is dus wel iets gebeurd in al die tijd dat we niets hoorden. Wat, dat horen we een paar dagen later vanuit een nogal ongebruikelijke bron. Save a Child’s Heart Foundation plaatst een nieuw promotiefilmpje, en daarin herkennen wij... onze Lucas. De arme jongen is zo plattelands, dat een bezoek aan Shirati voor hem al een reis naar de grote stad was. Zijn ouders spreken nauwelijks Swahili, alleen Luo. Op het filmpje zie je hem dan ook vol onbegrip naar alle kabels, piepjes en monitors op de hartbewaking van Dar es Salaam kijken. Hij spreekt geen woord, maar staart alleen wat overdonderd voor zich uit. In de voice over vertelt een arts van de Foundation wat voor fantastisch werk ze hebben geleverd, en hoe Lucas nu weer een normaal leven kan leiden. Dat is natuurlijk het belangrijkst, maar de ironie van een hele promotiefilm opnemen terwijl er naar ons niet eens een appje af kon, die ontgaat ons niet.

Clinical officer Peter belt: of we nu naar de polikliniek willen komen, want er is een patiënt met wie het niet goed gaat. Het kleine kamertje van 2,5 bij 3 meter waar alle acute gevallen worden opgevangen staat ramvol met twee stretchers, zuurstofmachines, gordijntjes op wielen, een bureau, medisch personeel en familie. Op de rechter stretcher ligt Jackson, een man van een jaar of dertig, zo’n zestig keer per minuut te ademen, terwijl de monitor voortdurend piept dat alle vitale waarden niet goed zijn. Op de linker stretcher ligt een kind van een jaar of vijf. Het kind is dood. Peter staat er een beetje hulpeloos naar te kijken. Gezien de reden waarom we meestal naar deze kamer worden geroepen, heet dit in mijn hoofd de reanimatiekamer, maar dat heeft in dit geval geen zin meer. Het kind blijkt een uur geleden te zijn aangereden door een piki piki, en onder de huid op het achterhoofd voelen we een heel stuk schedel los liggen. Daar valt niets meer mee te beginnen. Terwijl Joost de dood vaststelt, probeer ik in het pandemonium dat dan losbreekt onder de aanwezige familie, in de krappe ruimte Jackson te stabiliseren. Deze man ziet er ook uit alsof hij actief het tijdelijke voor het eeuwige aan het verruilen is. Hij blijkt drie dagen geleden ook een motorongeluk te hebben gehad, wordt steeds slechter en is nu verwezen vanuit een polikliniekje in de buurt. Zijn ene pupil is groter dan de ander, de bloeddruk gaat alle kanten op -van torenhoog naar veel te laag- en waar hij eerder nog enorm aan het hijgen was, ademt hij nu zo weinig en zo oppervlakkig dat er bijna geen zuurstof meer zijn longen in komt. De monitor begint nog wat harder te piepen. Alles wijst op een late hersenbloeding na het ongeluk, waarschijnlijk met betrokkenheid van de hersenstam. Ik stop een Mayo tube in zijn keel om de ademweg open te houden, waar hij zich geenszins tegen verzet (ook al een slecht teken, want iedereen met een beetje bewustzijn spuugt zo’n ding gelijk uit) en geef wat beademingen bij op de ballon. Het gaat allemaal maar matig, en door het geschreeuw van de familie van het overleden kind kan ik niet horen of ik lucht de longen in blaas. We roepen Thijs en Constant op om te komen helpen. Midden in de chaos komt dan clinical officer Manonga binnen met de mededeling dat hiernaast nog een heel slecht kind ligt. We hebben maar twee stretchers, dus als Manonga met in zijn armen een stuiptrekkende peuter met schuim op de mond de toch al volle kamer binnenloopt, neemt Joost het dode kind in zijn armen en legt het even onceremonieel in de kamer ernaast. Thijs en Constant komen binnen, en met z’n vieren krijgen we Jackson weer enigszins stabiel, en weten we de epileptische aanval te stoppen. Even rustig ademhalen. Na een paar minuten spuugt Jackson zelfs zijn Mayo tube uit en reageert een klein beetje op zijn naam. De familie van het overleden kind druipt af naar het mortuarium, en de andere twee patiënten worden overgeplaatst naar de IC. Op de een of andere manier komt dit soort chaos hier altijd in vlagen, maar ook dat went. We kijken elkaar aan en ik zeg: “Ik heb eigenlijk best honger.” Tijd voor lunch. In de kantine is men zich nergens van bewust en is het alsof er niets gebeurd is.

“Willen jullie matako?”

“Natuurlijk willen wij matako. Zoals elke dag.”

We bespreken onderling wat we verder voor Jackson kunnen doen, maar we denken dat hij een hele slechte prognose heeft, omdat hij in vlagen even beter wordt, maar algeheel steeds verder achteruit gaat. We kunnen hier niets voor hem doen, en hij is te instabiel om over te plaatsen. Over de nacht krijgt de dertigjarige ondersteunende zorg, en de volgende ochtend lopen we met lood in de schoenen de IC op. Daar treffen we een klein medisch wonder: Jackson is wakker, eet, drinkt, loopt rond en praat. En de man wiens overlijdenspapieren gisteren al klaarlagen, zegt: “Jongens, wanneer mag ik nou eindelijk een keer naar huis?”

Sobre la larga y esquiva relación entre Caballé y Sevilla

Montserrat Caballé nunca cantó una ópera completa en Sevilla. Este será sin duda uno de los grandes estigmas con el que habrán de cargar los gestores y programadores líricos de la ciudad, no haber logrado que una de las más grandes estrellas del firmamento operístico de la segunda mitad del siglo XX encarnase a alguna de sus grandes heroínas en las tablas sevillanas. Y no es porque no la tuvieran cerca ni porque a la soprano le faltaran gestos de simpatía hacia la ciudad. Por lo que fuera, el hecho queda para la historia de las ausencias.

Nunca cantó una ópera en escena, pero hay documentadas al menos una docena de actuaciones suyas en Sevilla, hasta en cinco escenarios diferentes. La soprano de los filados infinitos ofreció ya, junto a su fiel escudero Miguel Zanetti, un recital en el Lope de Vega en octubre de 1969. Habían pasado poco más de cuatro años de su despegue internacional, tras la mítica Lucrecia Borgia del Carnegie Hall. Las crónicas de la época hablan de asombro incomparable. Los años 70 son los años de la consolidación del prodigio en los teatros de todo el mundo. Años de adjetivos gastados por el uso. De apelaciones a herencias (la de la Callas) que ella misma siempre rechazó ("no, por favor, María es demasiado grande", decía).

Años también de penuria musical en Sevilla, que no volvió a escuchar en directo a la Caballé hasta mayo de 1984, cuando regresó al Lope de Vega en un recital de los de Cita en Sevilla, con lleno hasta en los pasillos. En 1990 repitió en el mismo mes, el mismo ciclo y el mismo escenario con dos nuevos recitales. Luego llegó el Maestranza, la Expo y las inauguraciones. Primero la del coliseo del Paseo Colón en la famosa Gala Lírica de mayo de 1991, compartiendo tablas con los grandes de la ópera española del momento (Aragall, Berganza, Carreras, Domingo, Kraus, Lavirgen, Lorengar, Pons); después con un recital en solitario en junio de aquel mismo año, aún dentro de los fastos por la apertura del teatro. Lamentablemente sus siguientes comparecencias en él fueron para ocasiones menores, siempre acompañada por su hija Montserrat Martí (1995, con la Orquesta Nacional de España dirigida por José Collado; 2002 y 2011, disminuidas ya considerablemente sus facultades vocales, en recitales benéficos). ¡Qué gran belcantista se perdió el teatro para una ópera de verdad, en una época (los 90) en la que sus medios eran aún notables!

Lo que mucha gente no sabe (o no recuerda) es que Caballé fue también protagonista en la inauguración del Teatro Central, que tuvo lugar el 20 de abril de 1992 con la recuperación de una obra teatral de Rafael Alberti (La Gallarda), que contó con la participación de Ana Belén y José Sacristán y en la que la soprano cantó música de Manolo Sanlúcar. Otro de los centros emblemáticos de las artes escénicas durante la Expo’92, el Auditorio de la Cartuja (hoy, Auditorio Rocío Jurado), vio también a Caballé en algunas funciones de la Antología de la Zarzuela, un género que prestigió más desde los recitales y las grabaciones que en funciones escénicas.

El quinto escenario sevillano que pisó la gran cantante catalana fue sacro. El 22 de mayo de 2000, en la inauguración del ciclo Ópera por Barrios, Caballé ofreció en la catedral, y junto al tenor Joaquín Pixán, un recital que oficialmente se había programado para el Monasterio de San Jerónimo y que hubo de ser aplazado once días por una caída sufrida por la soprano poco antes de coger el vuelo que la había de trasladar de Barcelona a Sevilla.

Montserrat Caballé, leyenda interminable del arte del canto, ha muerto. Y el mundo de la ópera llora. De las otras caídas que escriban otros.

UNA DISCOGRAFÍA INABARCABLE

Entre grabaciones oficiales de estudio, tomas en directo (a veces, piratas; a veces, radiofónicas; a veces, de sonido algo más que deficiente) y recopilaciones de todo pelaje, el legado discográfico de Montserrat Caballé es inmenso. En las más importantes casas discográficas y en las marcas corsarias más insospechadas, con los más grandes maestros de su tiempo (de Schippers, Bonynge y Muti a Mehta, Pritchard, Patané o Colin Davis) y en compañía de los cantantes más célebres (Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Milnes, Ramey, Sutherland, Bergonzi, Capuccilli…), sus grabaciones circulan en todos los formatos físicos y digitales conocidos, plataformas de internet, tiendas y bazares de segunda mano.

Aunque destacó principalmente en el repertorio belcantista y verdiano, Caballé dejó también testimonios de obras veristas o de algunos de los más conocidos títulos del repertorio francés y fue una estupenda straussiana. La siguiente lista, escogida y ordenada por simple afinidad personal, quiere servir sólo de acicate para acercarse a su arte; es un mojarse los pies en la orilla del océano inmenso.

“Army of Thieves is an upcoming American-German romantic comedy-heist film including zombies directed by Matthias Schweighöfer, produced by Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, Schweighöfer and Dan Maag, with a screenplay by Shay Hatten, from an original story co-written by Snyder and Hatten. A prequel to Army of the Dead, the film stars Schweighöfer, who reprises his role as Ludwig Dieter, along with a supporting cast that includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Guz Khan, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Jonathan Cohen, Noemie Nakai and Peter Simonischek. Filming began in Germany in October 2020, and concluded by December 2020.

Army of Thieves is scheduled to be released in late 2021 on Netflix.
