A Brief Guide to Yachts

This is a continuation to my cultural education segment (aka my rich bitch guide).

The yacht is an invention of the 14th century Dutch. The Dutch used small, fast boats for chasing smugglers, pirates and criminals. Rich ship owners and merchants began using these small “jaghts” to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships.

The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club, was established in Ireland in 1720.

1. Annapolis Yacht Club: Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs

2. Chicago Yacht Club: Founded in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the world. The Club is home to more than 1,400 members, including a winning America’s Cup skipper, and Olympic medalists.

Yachts are most active in the summer months (May- August in the northern hemisphere) or the winter months. many yacht owners decide to keep the maximum number of guests onboard to 12 (plus crew) for chartering.

Different types of yachts:

Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails

Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors

Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors

Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining

Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.

Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds.

Catamaran Yacht: a yacht with two hulls (pontoons) often made of fiberglass that can be used in shallow waters.

Football club owner Shahid Khan's 95 metre Lürssen Kismet was delivered in 2014. On match days, a four-metre silver statue of a jaguar, its paw resting on a football helmet, graces the bow. The 70 metre Feadship superyacht Joy features a deck that's wide enough to enjoy a tandem jog around. With a course that went up and down all day, Stage 6 was a likely breakaway stage, and when the ultimate break went out, it was a strong one. Elise Chabbey (Canyon//SRAM) had a very hard crash on a descent, and in the aftermath, Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health), Liane Lippert (Movistar), Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ), and Ane Santesteban (Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi) went up the road on an uncategorized climb.

Santesteban was eventually dropped, and the bunch wasn't able to bring that strong trio back. It came down to a three-up sprint to the line, with Lippert having the best legs on the day.

Lippert, who had a long recovery from a stress fracture last year, has been working her way back into form, and didn't look as strong this spring as she had been last season. Today's performance showed she is regaining the legs that brought her a stage in the Tour de France Femmes last year, and she adds a Giro stage to her palmares. (It's just weird to see her in the standard Movistar kit and not in the German national champs jersey!)

The entire point of it was "I feel like a side-show, who's always second fiddle to someone who's inferior":

The character of Sideshow Bob in the Simpsons is a pre-70's pre-Starwars "classical" geek, right down to his speaking and mannerisms.

People did always love it, they just didn't always talk about it as if they did. Look at the classics which actually persist through the ages. They are all pretty "geeky" for their time, actually! What do you even think stage-performance culture is, like theatre-kids and muzzos? Hell even the hyper-technicality of jazz was seen as hella geeky shit in its day.

And yeah, you can also argue cultural-relativism:

So yes, what's actually happening is just, "the past was always", actually? The idea that it wasn't and isn't is actually the bullshit artifice of our era designed to sell you brand identity?

The entire platform of nostalgia-marketing is about stealing your memories to replace them with fake ones so you can be tricked into buying shit you don't need!

AND YES, THAT EVEN INCLUDES NEGATIVE MEMORIES!

REDUCTIONIST SOLIDARITY WITH A SIMPLE "US VS THEM" NARRITIVE IS THE VERY BACKBONE OF MARKETING!

The magnitude of how much something is remembered is defined by its conversation in the present. Most of the people who obsess over Garfield now for example, did not read Garfield! And you know what? THAT'S OK!

The positive memories are the ones which persisted, and as such they tend to be the ones which define the cultural memory of a thing!

Why? Because while human negativity bias means we tend in the short to medium term remember the negative stuff more powerful, positive memories are the ones which win out overall in the long term, because they're the experiences humans are most likely to talk about when defining themselves.

Lucian's "A true story" was science fiction of its day in 2nd century AD, literally dunking on travel-logs by writing an absurdist fantasy where men get swallowed by a 300km whale, travel to outer-space, and get feminized into trees by drinking wine.

And so I'm going to write on the end of this post as they did upon Lucian:

For anybody who isn't aware, one of my hobbies which i've done since 1993 is engaging with ironic posts that are interesting enough with new sincerity because it always produces something weird or insightful and because its the exact opposite of what op wanted.
