maybe it’s just that i’m a programmer working in manufacturing but i cannot stand the corporate engineering manager expectation that every error or mishap is always preventable. especially coupled with the expectation that it’s on each individual employee to personally foresee and prevent every potential issue regardless of timing, support, or resources

i understand it’s a mentality of “there’s nothing new under the sun. every major issue here is known and theoretically foreseeable. therefore if we have qualified people doing their due diligence, we can avoid the pitfalls”

in my experience this sets up the false implication that, should anything go wrong, it’s because someone is unqualified or incompetent. but no matter how much diligence you have, no matter how competent your engineers, no matter how much shame you put into “failure” or praise into success, you cannot 100% eradicate human error.

computer science knows this, the compiler sure as shit knows it. so computer science accepts that, even in code written by the very smartest and cleverest programmers, errors will happen in any project of sufficient size. it plans for them, it builds in layers of redundancy. testing a piece of software almost intrinsically involves actively trying to break it because the starting assumption is that you have definitely made a mistake somewhere and the goal is to find it. that’s why there are so many jokes about being suspicious of code that works on the first try.

the underlying philosophy of software development at every point is “this is made by humans to be operated by humans and humans, unavoidably and despite their best efforts, fuck up”

not accounting for human error and demanding perfection? that’s what we call gross negligence in software design

and idk that just seems like a much physically safer and healthier alternative to pretending like we are all masters of the universe but also slackers?

I really like and prefer the anonymity of tumblr and all, but I think a small part of me wishes there was public whump events, like a Whump-Con or something.

Walking thru booths selling books and art pieces of blood and gore, hearing someone speak on the uses of environmental whump and how to get creative with it, you get to gush about your favorite fics and stories in real time, you get to meet your long-time friends and people you look up to, and more.

tfw when you write an entire novel with two protagonists that spent the entire plot getting closer to each other, becoming best friends and eventually both of them deciding they would rather die than allow the other to not live a long, fulfilling life, their friendship carrying most of the emotional weight of the entire plot and the emotional climax being one of them sacrificing his life so the other can live and then the other crossing literal universes to find him, a tearful smile in his face as he confesses how much he missed him. which is the scene you wanted to write and show the most because, again, this is the pay off to the slowburn you've been writing in the entire novel and what everything has been building up to since the very first chapter. and then you end the novel by having them share a smile, finally confident they'll be able to have a happy future.

but you also just gotta have one of them marry offscreen because everyone knows you can't be happy if you're not in a het marriage with kids lmao it's whatever it's okay i'm fiNE-

i think the most important thing for Understanding (TM) princess AU luz and hunter's relationship is that, like.... they were each other's primary source of affection growing up. which works out Great for hunter given that luz is a MUCH better source of affection than belos, but. like.

hunter starting out as this guide to navigating this huge dangerous world on little-kid feet, over time very literally becoming luz's main form of physical security; luz starting out as this uncomplicated and kind friend who nonetheless is small and fragile and in need of protection, becoming this young woman who is now much more complicated but still So Kind...

AU hunter is Much less attached to belos because he has his needs met through luz instead. and yet. this boy can hold So Many complexes about usefulness and protection in him.

AU luz is just as kind and well-intentioned as her canon self. but her whole emotional world is tied to hunter and when he's threatened or hurt, her sense of self Collapses.

all of this codependence is, perhaps, causing Problems for both of them. but they Also both do immediately relax and calm down and think more clearly whenever the other is nearby, so...... is it really a problem?? one thousand scenes of them sleeping together say no.

I'm working on a fic and was like 'how in the hell do you make LINGUANG JUN the least bit redeemable?'. I mean, /Linguang jun/ who tossed a developmentally four year old Mobei Jun to a pack of humans? The kid could have died. And then I saw a translation of the extras. It describes lgj as mbj's 'young uncle', says that he 'wasn't that much older than him (mbj)'. And I just- its a hell of a lot different, a Scar type tossing his nephew to the proverbial wolves than it is for a maybe dumb, maybe petty, maybe developmentally five or six year old to shove their annoying technically-nephew-who-in-age-and-context-is-more-like-a-brother-than-lgj's-actual-brother into a situation that the text implies was more frightening than actually /dangerous/. And that- well I can work with that.
