Clothes at the time of murder/discovery: A black Straw bonnet trimmed with black velvet, a reddish brown ulster with seven large brass buttons bearing the pattern of a woman on horseback accompanied by a man; a brown linsey frock (apparently new); a white flannel chest cloth; black ribbed wool stockings; two petticoats, one gray wool, one flannel, both stenciled on bands “Lambeth Workhouse”; brown stays (short); flannel drawers; men’s elastic (spring) sided boots with the uppers cut and steel tips on the heels.

Resting place: City of London Cemetery & Crematorium.

Early life

Mary Ann “Polly” Walker was born on August 26, 1845 in Dawes Court, Shoe Lane, off Fleet Street (London, England) to blacksmith (former locksmith) Edward Walker and his wife Caroline. She was christened in or some years before 1851. She had a brother. Caroline died in 1852 aged 32 and was buried on 5th December at St Andrew Holborn.

Polly married printer’s machinist William Nichols on January 16, 1864. She would have been about 22 years old. The marriage was performed by Charles Marshall, Vicar of Saint Bride’s Parish Church in Fleet Street and witnessed by Seth George Havelly and Sarah Good. Polly and William lived for a time in Bouverie St and then moved to 131 Trafalgar St, Walworth (Central London, within the London Borough of Southwark) with her father. 

The couple’s first child, son William Edward, was born on 17th December 1864 but died in infancy in 1966. Their second son, Edward John, was born on 4th of July 1866; and their third one, Percy George, on 18th July 1868. They all were christened on the 9th August 1868 at St Peter, Walworth. The Nicholses first daughter, Alice Esther, was born on December 1870.

Around 1874 the family moved at 6D Peabody Buildings, Stamford St, Blackfriars Rd, Lambeth (South London). There they were paying a rent of 5 shillings, 6 pence per week. On December 1876 they had their fifth child, and second daughter, Eliza Sarah, and their marital problems began. On December 4th 1878 their son Henry Alfred was born.

Around 1880/81 William and Polly separated and he retained custody of the children except for the oldest, Edward John, who left home on his own accord, aged around 14. It was the last of many separations during 24 years of marriage. 

Later life

After the separation, Polly began a sad litany of moving from workhouse to workhouse (a place where those unable to support themselves were offered accommodation and employment). From 6thSeptember 1880 to 31st May 1881 Polly entered Lambeth Workhouse. Legally required to support his estranged wife, William Nichols paid her an allowance of five shillings a week until 1882, when he heard that she was working as a prostitute; he was not required to support her if she was earning money through illicit means. Polly went to Lambeth Parish who summonsed William for restoration of maintenance. Parish authorities tried to collect maintenance money from him. He countered that she had deserted him leaving him with the children. He won his case after establishing that she was living as a common prostitute, and the charges were dropped. William no longer had to pay the allowance. 

Polly’s father spread the story that the separation had come about due to William having an affair with the nurse who took care of Polly during her last confinement. William did not deny that he had had an affair but states that it was not the cause of her leaving. “The woman left me four or five times, if not six.” He claimed that the affair took place after Polly left. By 1883 William Nichols had a child by his next door neighbour at Peabody building, widow Rosetta Walls nee Vidler. Both families are on the 1881 census at this address, William is alone and has his and Polly’s children living with him. His son with Polly, Henry Alfred was baptised as the son of William and Rosetta in 1883, and also his son with Rosetta, Arthur Walls Nichols was baptised on the same day. 

Polly stayed at Lambeth Workhouse (from 24th April 1882 to 24th March 1883), with a short staying at the Lambeth Infirmary (from 18th to 20th January 1883). Then, from 24th March to 21st May she was living with her father in Camberwell (London borough of Southwark, south London). He testified at the inquest into her murder that she was “a dissolute character and drunkard whom he knew would come to a bad end.” He found her not a sober person but not in the habit of staying out late at night. Her drinking caused friction and they argued. He claimed that he had not thrown her out but she left the next morning.

She returned to the Lambeth Workhouse and stayed from 21st May to 2nd June 1883. From that day and until the 26th October 1887 she had been living with a man named Thomas Stuart Dew, a blacksmith, with a shop in York Mews, 15 York St., Walworth (London borough of Southwark, south east London). In June 1886 she had attended the funeral of her brother who had been burned to death by the explosion of a paraffin lamp. It was remarked by the family that she was respectably dressed.

She spent the day of 25th October 1887 in St. Giles Workhouse, Endell Street. From 26th October to 2nd December 1887 she stayed at the Strand Workhouse, Edmonton. The night of the 2nd December 1887 she was caught “sleeping rough (in the open)” in Trafalgar Square. She was found to be destitute and with no means of sustenance and was sent on to Lambeth Workhouse, where she stayed until the 29th December of that year.

There are no records of where she was staying until the 4th January 1888, where she’s found staying at the Mitcham Workhouse, Holborn and Holborn Infirmary until the 16th of April, when she returned again to the Lambeth Workhouse. She would stay there until the 12th of May. It is in Lambeth Workhouse that she meets Mary Ann Monk who will eventually identify Polly’s body for the police. Monk is described as a young woman with a “Haughty air and flushed face.” Polly had another friend in the Lambeth Workhouse, a Mrs. Scorer. She had been separated from her husband James Scorer, an assistant salesman in Spitalfields Market, for eleven years.

On 12th May 1888 she left Lambeth to take a position as a domestic servant in the home of Samuel and Sarah Cowdry. This was common practice at the time for Workhouses to find domestic employment for female inmates. The Cowdry’s lived at “Ingleside”, Rose Hill Rd, Wandsworth. They were described as upright people. Both were religious and teetotalers. Around that time, Polly wrote to her father:

“I just right to say you will be glad to know that I am settled in my new place, and going all right up to now. My people went out yesterday and have not returned, so I am left in charge. It is a grand place inside, with trees and gardens back and front. All has been newly done up. They are teetotalers and religious so I ought to get on. They are very nice people, and I have not too much to do. I hope you are all right and the boy has work. So good bye for the present.

Walker replied to the letter but did not hear back. She worked for two months and then left while stealing clothing worth three pounds, ten shillings.

The night of the 1st August to 2nd 1888 was spent at the Grays Inn Temporary Workhouse. She then moved to the Wilmott’s Lodging House at 18 Thrawl Street, Spitalfields. There she shared a room with four women, including Emily Holland. The room was described as being surprisingly neat. The price of the room was 4d per night. On August 24th Polly moved to a lodging house known as the White House at 56 Flower and Dean Street. In this doss-house men were allowed to share a beds with women.

Here is my personal list of young characters who, from my perspective, suffer from parentification or play parental roles, whether for their siblings or even their own parents. Some cases are more obvious than others, and in some cases it is necessary to analyze their history and context to fully understand their situation. There is no specific order, I just list them as they come to mind. Maybe at some point I'll go into more detail about why I selected each one, but for now, this is simply a list. Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols: 26th August 1845 - 31st August 1888

Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols was born Mary Ann Walker in Soho on the 26th of August 1845. She was the second of three children born to Edward Walker and his wife Caroline. Few details remain of her childhood years but what is known is that by 1851, she had been christened.

At the age of 18, Mary married William Nichols, a machinist, on the 16th of January 1864 at Saint Bride's Parish Church. After their marriage the couple resided at 30-31 Bouverie Street before moving to live with Mary's father at 131 Trafalgar Street. The couple went on to have five children together: Edward John, born 1866, Percy George, born 1868, Alice Esther, born 1870, Eliza Sarah, born 1877, and Henry Alfred, born 1879.

On the 6th of September 1880, the family moved into their own home, 6 D-Block, Peabody Buildings, paying a rent of 5s. 9d. They lived there for only a short time before they separated under disputed circumstances. Nichol's father claimed that that William had left his daughter after having an affair with the nurse who helped in the delivery of their final child. William maintained that no such affair occurred, and the split was due to troubles caused by Mary's drinking. He and four of the children moved into an address near Old Kent Road. He sent her an allowance of five shillings a week until 1882 when he was informed that she was working as a prostitute. When authorities attempted to collect the money on her behalf, William informed them that she was earning her own money through prostitution, that she had deserted him and her children, and that she was living with another man. Law stated that if a woman was making money from 'illicit means,' Mary no longer received maintenance from her estranged husband.

Many of Mary's movements during the intervening years are unknown. We know she resided at Lambeth Workhouse in 1881 and left on 31st May that same year, and that she returned on 24th April 1882. It is also known that she lived for some months with her father until an argument caused her to leave in 1883. After this point she was in and out of workhouses, attempting to earn a living on the streets, and frequently spent this money on alcohol. In 1887 she had begun a relationship with Thomas Dew, but this had fallen apart by October. In December 1887, she was homeless and began sleeping on the streets near Trafalgar Square though through a clearance of this area, she found herself back at Lambeth Workhouse where she stayed for only two weeks.

Her movements in 1888 are more documented. The matron of Lambeth Workhouse found employment for Mary as a domestic servant in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cowdry in Wandsworth.

Nichols wrote a letter to her father shortly after taking this position in which she wrote the following:

When Edward attempted to respond to this communique, he received word that Mary had absconded from the premises, taking with her clothing that amounted to £3 10s. By that summer, she was staying at a common lodging house at 18 Thrawl Street before relocating to 56 Flower and Dean Street on 24th August.

We come, then, to the 30th of August and the last instances Mary was seen alive. She was seen at 11pm walking along Whitechapel Road before visiting the Frying Pan public house, complete with a new black velvet bonnet that she was rather proud of. She stayed there until just after midnight and after leaving, had returned to her lodging house at Flower and Dean Street by 1:20am, August 31st. She was informed by the deputy housekeeper that she needed the 4d for her bed and upon response that she didn't have the money, she was ordered from the house, with an unconcerned Nichols responding quite proudly that "I'll soon get my doss money. See what a jolly bonnet I've got now." She left to work the streets, confident that her bonnet would attract clients with ease.

Emily Holland saw Nichols at 2:30am and saw that the woman was noticeably drunk and slumped against a nearby wall. Holland, concerned for the woman, attempted to convince her to return to the lodging house but Nichols refused. It seems her hopes that the bonnet would attract clients were met as she responded that she'd "had my lodging money three times today, and I have spent it." The two women parted ways, with Nichols heading off towards Whitechapel Road with the intention of securing her lodging house money. She would be found dead an hour later, the first victim of Jack the Ripper.

The Canonical Five: Mary Ann Nichols

I’ve been not posting as much lately but I wanted to come back with a bang and do Jack the Ripper, one of my favourite true crime cases of all time. However, instead of just doing a post on the entire case I figured I’d do a deep dive into each of the victims. 

I know Jack the Ripper most likely had more victims than just these five women, however the Canonical Five has become extremely infamous in this case and each woman deserves their own post in my opinion. 

Here we go. 

Mary Ann, also known as “Polly” to friends and family, was born Mary Ann Walker on August 26, 1845 in Dean Street, Soho, London. She was the second child of Edward and Caroline Walker. 

At 18 years old Mary Ann married a man named William Nichols on January 16, 1864 at Saint Bride’s Parish Church in the City of London. The couple first lived at 30-31 Bouverie Street, but eventually moved In with Mary Ann’s father at 131 Trafalgar Street. 

The couple had five children together: Edward John (born in 1866), Percy George (born in 1868), Alice Esther (born in 1870), Eliza Sarah (born in 1877) and Henry Alfred (born in 1879). 

Shortly after their fifth child Henry was born, Mary Ann and William moved into their own home at 6 D-Block Peabody Buildings on September 6, 1880, paying a weekly rent. However, this did not last for long and the couple separated with William taking four of their children to live near Old Kent Road. 

Mary Ann’s father accused William of leaving Mary Ann due to an affair he supposedly had with the nurse who had been there when their son Henry was born, though William claimed that him and Mary Ann had kept their marriage going for at least three years after this alleged affair. William insisted that the reason for their separation was due to Mary Ann’s heavy drinking and he had only started an affair after Mary Ann had left him. William had told authorities later on that Mary Ann had left him and began practicing sex work. 

In 1881, Mary Ann was residing at Lambeth Workhouse, though she left this workhouse on May 31st. She did eventually return to the workhouse on April 24, 1882. She did move back with her father for a period of time in 1883 before moving out again following a quarrel. 

Back in these days you legally had to support your wife, despite them being separated, William Nichols would pay Mary Ann a weekly allowance of five shillings until the spring of 1882, when he found out she was working as a sex worker. William stopped making these payments due to this, and explained to the authorities that his wife had deserted him and his family, living with another man and involved in sex work. 

William was not required to pay his wife if she was earning money through sex work, so Mary Ann no longer was receiving anything from her husband. 

The money Mary Ann did make from sex work was often spent on alcohol. 

In April 1888, Mary Ann began working as a domestic servant to Mr and Mrs Cowdry in Wandsworth. However, this did not last long and she left after only working there for 3 months, stealing clothes with her when she left. She lived in a common lodging-house for a period of time before moving to 56 Flower and Dean Street in Whitechapel on August 24, 1888.

Around 11pm on August 30, 1888, Mary Ann was seen walking along Whitechapel Road. She visited the Frying Pan public house in Brick Lane, Spitalfields, leaving at 12:30am on August 31. 

By 1:20am, she had returned to her lodging-house, and within the hour she was seen by the deputy lodging house keeper who asked her to pay for her bed for the night there. Mary Ann replied she had no money and she was ordered to leave. She said she would earn money and be back to get her bed. 

The last time Mary Ann Nichols was seen alive was by a woman named Emily Holland, where she was seen walking alone down Osborn Street around 2:30am. She was notably drunk according to Emily and at one point was slumped against the wall of a grocery shop. 

Emily had tried to get Mary Ann to go back to her lodging-house, but Mary Ann refused telling her she had already earned her money for the bed three times over but had spent it each time. The two parted with Mary Ann walking towards Whitechapel Road. 

At 3:40am, a man named Charles Allen Cross found what he believed to be a tarpaulin lying on the ground in front of a gated stable entrance in Buck’s Row, Whitechapel as he was walking to his workplace. Inspecting closer, Cross discovered that it was actually the body of a woman who was laying on her back with her eyes open, her legs straight, and her skirt raised above her knees. Her left hand was touching the gate of the stable entrance. 

Another man on his way to work, Robert Paul, saw Cross standing in the road looking at the body and both men examined the body together. Cross had touched the woman’s face which was still warm, then her hands which were cold. Cross thought the woman was dead, but Paul thought she might just be unconscious. The men pulled her skirt down and went to find a policeman. Constable Jonas Mizen was sent to examine the body while the men went on their way to work. 

Before Mizen got there, another policeman, John Neil had come across the body and was using a lantern to examine. While he was doing this he got the attention of Constable John Thain who was passing the entrance to Buck’s Row, which Neil shouted, “Here’s a woman with her throat cut. Run at once for Dr Llewellyn.” 

Neil found no blood trails with his lantern, and also examined the road but found no marks of wheels.

Surgeon Dr Llewellyn arrived at Buck’s Row at 4am and found two deep knife wounds on the woman’s throat, determining her deceased. The doctor determined she had only been dead for 30 minutes upon discovery, as her body and legs were still warm. He ordered Neil to take the body to the mortuary where he could then further examine her. 

Police questioned all the tenants of Buck’s Row, including those who lived on the property closest to where the woman’s body had been discovered. Several residents claimed to be awake at that time but no one heard or saw anything. All police who had been patrolling around the area at that time also claimed to have seen nothing suspicious. 

It was discovered that both sides of the woman’s face had been bruised by either a first or the pressure of a thumb before the throat wounds had been inflicted. One of the wounds measured 8 inches in length, and the other one measured to be 4 inches. Both reached back to her vertebral column and were inflicted from left to right. 

The woman’s genitals had been stabbed twice, her abdomen mutilated with one deep, jagged wound 2 or 3 inches from the left side. Several incisions had been inflicted across the abdomen, causing her bowels to protrude through. Three or four similar cuts ran down the right side of her body. The knife used was estimated to be at least 6-8 inches long, possibly a cork-cutter or shoemaker’s knife. 

Each wound had been violent and in a downward thrusting manner. The doctor believed that whoever did this had some kind of anatomical knowledge. None of the woman’s organs were missing. 

Dr Llewellyn estimated that this would have taken the murderer 4-5 minutes to complete. He also believed the woman had been facing her attacker when he held his hand across her mouth before cutting her throat. She would have died instantly and all of her injuries were made by the murderer after she died. The doctor believed this because there was little blood. 

The woman had no identification on her at the time of her death, and the only possessions she had was a white pocket handkerchief, a comb, and a piece of mirror. Her petticoats were marked “Lambeth Workhouse P.R.” so they believed that is where she resided. The matron of the workhouse could not identify the body, a workhouse inmate named Mary Ann Monk positively identified the woman as being Mary Ann Nichols at 7:30pm on August 31. Emily Holland had also positively identified her earlier that day. 

On September 1, 1888, William Nichols corroborated this discovery as being his estranged wife, stating “I forgive you, as you are, for what you have been to me.” 

The first day of the inquest heard testimony from three witnesses. The first was Mary Ann’s father, who claimed his daughter had been separated from William Nichols for about 7 or 8 years. He also said he had not seen his daughter since Easter and she had no known enemies. 

Constable John Neil also testified, claiming the actual location of the murder was dimly lit, the closest light being a street lamp shining at the end of the row. Neil also said that Whitechapel Road was pretty busy even at the time of the discovery, so it’s possible that Mary Ann’s killer could have escaped in that direction. 

Dr Llewellyn also testified, stating that Mary Ann had 5 missing teeth, a slight laceration on her tongue, a bruise running along the lower part of her jaw on the right side of her face. This could have been caused by a blow from a fist or pressure from a thumb. He further described her injuries and stated that no blood was found on the body or clothes. The injuries may have been done by a left-handed person and all of Mary Ann’s injuries had been done by the same instrument. 

A man named Harry Tomkins testified that he had not left his place of work after 1am on August 31 and him and his colleagues did not hear anything suspicious. Tomkins said his workplace was very quiet, but said he was too far away from the crime scene to have been able to hear any cries for help. 

Inspector Joseph Helson testified that Mary Ann had not been carried to the location where her body was found, she had been killed there. 

William Nichols testified again and claimed to have not seen his wife in three years and that she had left him of her own accord because of her drinking. He stated he had no knowledge of his wife’s whereabouts in the years before her death. 

It was determined that if Mary Ann’s murderer was walking around with blood on them after the attack, it would not have looked strange as this was Whitechapel in 1888 and many slaughterhouses were around. It wasn’t strange to see someone with blood on them during this period of time. 

By the time the inquest was completed, another murder of similar nature had occurred, with a woman named Annie Chapman being murdered on September 8, 1888. Many consider her to be the second canonical five murder, and she also was found with similar bruising on her face and horrific injuries. 

Mary Ann Nichols and Annie Chapman had a lot of similarities, both involved in sex work, being estranged from their husbands, and being around the same age. Annie Chapman’s murder will be discussed in further detail in the second instalment of this series. 

A 20 minute deliberation took place, and the jury came back concluding that Mary Ann Nichols had been murdered perhaps by someone she didn’t know.

Mary Ann’s murder had occurred within 300 yards of two previous murders of two other women named Emma Smith and Martha Tabram. All of the murders had occurred within a 5 month period, but they were clearly different. What led many to believe they were committed by the same person was the geographical location, and some do believe that Emma Smith and Martha Tabram are Ripper victims, however many do not. 

A reporter named Ernest Parke suggested in the August 31 edition of The Star, that these murders were committed by a single killer. Many others began to adopt this theory as well. In the week after the inquest closed on Mary Ann Nichols, two more women were murdered in similar fashion, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes. 

Any suspicions of a serial killer soon became confirmed as all of the women had been killed by a similar modus operandi, and eventually in October of 1888, the killer named himself Jack the Ripper. 

Before any of this however, there was a rumour going around that a local Jewish man named John Pizer known as “Leather Apron” who made footwear from leather may have murdered the women. He was known to carry a knife and did not like sex workers. 

There was no direct evidence against him but he was arrested on September 10, 1888. A search of his home was conducted where they found 5 long-bladed knives, however Pizer was soon released after confirmation of his alibis. He later received compensation from at least one newspaper who had named him a murderer. 

Mary Ann Nichols was buried on September 6, 1888, with her father, estranged husband and three of her children in attendance. She was buried in the City of London Cemetery. Her coffin had a brass plaque with the inscription, “Mary Ann Nichols, aged 42; died August 31, 1888.” 

Mary Ann Nichols is considered the first victim of the canonical five and many consider her the first Jack the Ripper victim. In the next part, the murder of Annie Chapman will be covered.

“Hey,” said Ginny, flopping down on the blanket next to Hermione. 

“Oh, are you finished playing?” 

“Just a break. Get this - Percy sent an owl and said he, Charlie and George are coming back at 4 to play.”

“Wow, he’s really trying to make this up to you all,” said Hermione, impressed. She glanced up to see Ron and Harry walk towards her, brooms in hand. She used her bookmark to hold her place.  

Harry dropped his broom to the ground and laid down between the two of them. “Hermione, your cooling charms are just as great as your warming ones.” 

Ron stood in front of them. Hermione shielded her eyes from the sun as she looked up at him warmly. He smiled back and stuck his arm into the air above her blanket. “Bloody hell, that feels good.” 

“Come lay down,” said Hermione, patting the blanket next to her. 

“I won’t get up if I do. And I was thinking I should run up to the house and grab some drinks and snacks to bring back here?” 

“Ah, great idea, mate,” said Harry. 

“Cute and brilliant, what more could I ask for?” said Hermione with a smile

Ron flushed and gave her a grin. “I’ll be right back.” He walked up to the house. 

Hermione pulled out her wand to expand the blanket and cooling charm to give them a bit more space. As she was putting her wand to the side, she caught Harry looking at her with a bemused expression. “What?” 

“I am just not used to that yet,” said Harry. “Especially from you.” 

“What’s that supposed to mean?”  

“I’ve never heard you compliment him before. Certainly not on his looks,” said Harry. 

“Harry Potter! You know that I think Ron’s wonderful and always have.”

 “I’ve thought Ron was great for almost a decade now. I assumed that you did too. I’ve just never heard you say it.” 

“You’re joking!”

“To be fair to you, you were quite complimentary of his basilisk fangs idea during the battle, but I otherwise stand by my statement.” 

 “Ginny!” Hermione appealed to her friend that had been observing silently. “You’ve heard me compliment Ron before, right?” 

“To his face? Never. To others? Also never.” 

“Well, the two of you aren’t around us all the time,” said Hermione. 

“It’s true. There were dozens of minutes over the last year that I was away from you two,” said Harry.

Ginny laughed. “It’s fine, Hermione. You just don’t hand out compliments easily.”

“That’s not true,” said Harry, shaking his head. “You’ve said loads of nice things about me.”

“Did she?” asked Ginny, quirking an eyebrow. 

Hermione rolled her eyes. “Harry, I’d recommend not triggering that Weasley jealousy. You’re my best friend, and who else was going to bolster and build you up? It certainly wasn’t based on any personal interest I had. I was just passing along the gossip and giggling I’d hear in the loo.”

“And Ron Weasley, bastion of self-assuredness, was in no need of compliments,” said Ginny drily. “Especially when you’re showering Harry in them.”  

Hermione’s face darkened. “That’s quite rich coming from someone who compared Ron to his best friends just to embarrass him. I fancied him, and you expected me to tell him that Bridget Nichols wanted to quote, ‘climb him like a tree’? Besides, I seem to recall that he wasn’t lacking female attention at the time,” she sniffed. 

Harry sat up, looking nervous. “Uh, look, there’s no need for you and Ron to rehash sixth year.”

“Ron and I have already come to an appropriate understanding on that. What there’s really no need for is the two of you butting into our relationship.”

“You’re right,” said Harry. “We should-”

“It all checks out,” said Ginny, voice dripping with sarcasm. “You complimented Ron constantly, which gave him the confidence to never make a move.” 

“Oh, and what about him? It’s not like he was showering me in praise!”

“Well, he did -” Harry stopped his sentence short. “No. I’m sorry I brought any of this up; it was a careless joke.”

“Finish what you were going to say,” Ginny and Hermione demanded in unison. Hermione looked at Ginny, surprised by the synchronicity before glaring and looking back at Harry, who she could tell desperately regretted the whole conversation. 

Harry looked between the two and sighed. “All I was going to say was that Ron has told you how brilliant you are loads of times over the years.”

“Well, so has Professor Flitwick, but I didn’t think that meant he was trying to get in my knickers.”

“It’s Ron, though. He hardly ever misses an opportunity to put his foot in his mouth, yet I can still think of dozens of times he fawned all over you.” 

“Those aren’t exactly signals a boy gives you to say he’s attracted to you,” said Hermione. 

“No, I suppose not,” said Harry, laying back down. He looked as if he wanted to say more but was holding his tongue. 

“I think that what Harry said originally is true. Neither of you ever explicitly told us you liked the other, but we always knew Ron thought you were amazing. We had to assume that you thought Ron was too,” said Ginny, the edge now gone from her tone.

Hermione opened her mouth and then closed it. She knew they were wrong, but she just didn’t have the proof yet. 

They lay contemplating for a few minutes before Harry broke the tense silence. “Ugh, I’m still trying to decide what’s more disturbing - Flitwick trying to get in your knickers or Ron.”

“Ron doesn’t have to try,” Hermione cheeked. Ginny laughed, and Harry’s face contorted. 

“What don’t I have to try?” asked Ron. He had returned with a basket filled with cold butterbeers, crisps, biscuits, and a couple of apples, which he set next to Hermione as he eased himself down.  While the others stretched around to grab snacks, Hermione cringed as she noticed he looked uncomfortable to have discovered them discussing him. She decided to be straightforward. 

“To get into my knickers,” Hermione responded with a grin. His ears burned, but she saw a light in his eyes when he noticed Harry’s continued cringe. 

“Oh,” he said as he sat down next to her. “Are you actually wearing knickers today? That’s disappointing.”

Harry broke a biscuit and threw half at each of them.

“Hey Hermione?”

“Yes?” It was well after dinner now, and the two of them were taking a walk as dusk began to settle in. The decision to take a walk was met with teasing from all of his brothers that left Hermione rolling her eyes. It was truly only a walk. After years of seeing only the downsides to his status as the youngest brother, he was finally reaping a benefit - his parents were turning a blind eye to the fact they were sharing a bed in a silenced and locked room so an uncomfortable roll in the orchard was unnecessary. 

“Yes?”

“Why were you talking about me getting in your knickers with Harry and Ginny?”

Hermione bit her lip while Ron continued on. 

“Don’t get me wrong. I would be comfortable taking out an ad in The Daily Prophet bragging about shagging you, and I’m sure they knew well before today. But as fun as it was to make him squirm, I thought we’d been trying to not make Harry uncomfortable.”

“He sort of brought it up.”

“Oh?”

“Yes. After you walked away, he mentioned it was odd to hear me call you cute.”

“And brilliant,” he said with a rakish grin. 

“Of course.”

“But how did that lead to your knickers?”

“Oh, it was infuriating. The reason he thought it strange was that he couldn’t remember me ever giving you any compliments.”

“Oh.”

“And I was telling him how silly that was.”

“Right.”

“Obviously, now that we’re together... I’ve been attracted to you for as long as I can remember, but it’s certainly easier to tell you now, don’t you think?”

“Uh, sure. I mean, previously I worried that telling you how gorgeous and sexy you are would get me slapped, and now I’m just curious which one of us ends up on our back.”

 “Stop,” she giggled. “But before we were together, I always told you how highly I thought of you.”

“Well, I don’t think you hand out unearned praise.”

 “Of course. But I’ve complimented you loads over the years. Right?”

Silence hung between them. 

“I love you?” Ron finally responded. 

“You agree with them?”

“I really love you?” said Ron. 

“You truly don’t think I ever complimented you?”

“You… tried once. When I got the prefect badge in 5th year,” he said. 

“The only reason I didn’t have anything was that I couldn’t think of a way to say it without hurting Harry’s feelings!”

“Really, love, don’t worry about it. You said things about my Quidditch performances as well. At least the good ones.”

“No! We.. we cleared the air on all this. Viktor, Lavender, the locket. Why didn’t you say anything then?”

“What would I say? You should have complimented me more? How self-involved would that sound? And now that we’re together, you do compliment me all the time. If I’d said something, maybe I’d question if you were being genuine or not now.”

Hermione was quiet. “I never realized that I wasn’t. It all ran through my head so much, but I guess I never… things would have been so different if I had.”

“We don’t know that.”

“Really?” she said with disbelief. 

“Yes, really. I won’t lie - compliments couldn’t possibly have hurt. But you basically asked me on a date, and my mind still couldn’t process that you wanted to be with me. And at that point in my life, the praise to Harry would have still bothered me, so the locket would have glommed onto that.”

“I would never have said-“

“Hermione! Listen to yourself! You didn’t do anything wrong telling Harry those things. His life was shit, and he’s your best friend. It’s not your fault I was an immature prat.”

“I was really just passing along what the girls were saying about him in the loo.”

Ron looked amused. “Is that how girls talk in the loo about boys?”

Hermione laughed. “I’m not even sure what I told you.”

“At the risk of reinforcing what an insecure git I am, you mentioned how tall and fanciable he was and went into all of the Chosen One and Ministry persecution stuff,” Ron said. “I’m just saying that is not how we talked about girls in our dorm.” 

“Ah, yes, I did clean it up a bit, but they did at least talk about Harry with a bit of reverence and respect as opposed to treating him like a  piece of meat as they did with you. But I’m interested in how the boys discuss girls.”

Ron winced. “Sorry, I never even thought about what she might say that you’d have to hear.” 

“No, that was a whole different set of issues. These were other girls.” 

Ron stopped. “Other girls? What did - nevermind, it uh, doesn’t matter.” 

Hermione was surprised to find that his aborted question hadn’t even bothered her. “I won’t tell you everything, but I did already tell Harry… Bridget Nichols said she wanted to climb you like a tree and -” 

“What?!” 

“Yes,” she laughed. “And you remember Tori Daylon?” 

“She was that short little thing, right?” 

“She thought she was the perfect height to make you very happy.” 

“Merlin, you girls are just as bawdy as us,” Ron laughed. 

“We have hormones too.” 

“You never said anything about me, did you?” he asked. Hermione shook her head. “But what type of review am I going to get in the bathroom this year from you?” 

“You’re incorrigible,” she laughed.

“Is that a compliment?” 

“Absolutely.”

THE ATTIC

September 23, 1949

"The Attic” (aka “Trapped in the Attic”) is episode #55 of the radio series MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcast on September 23, 1949.

This was the fourth episode of the second season of MY FAVORITE HUSBAND. There were 43 new episodes, with the season ending on June 25, 1950.  

Synopsis ~ One of George's old Glee Club friends is in town and George wants to find his old ukulele, so he and Liz search for it in the attic but get locked in.

“My Favorite Husband” was based on the novels Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage (1940) and Outside Eden (1945) by Isabel Scott Rorick, which had previously been adapted into the film Are Husbands Necessary? (1942). “My Favorite Husband” was first broadcast as a one-time special on July 5, 1948. Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch “My Favorite Husband” as a series. Bowman was not available Richard Denning was cast as George. On January 7, 1949, confusion with bandleader Xavier Cugat prompted a name change to Cooper. On this same episode Jell-O became its sponsor. A total of 124 episodes of the program aired from July 23, 1948 through March 31, 1951. After about ten episodes had been written, writers Fox and Davenport departed and three new writers took over – Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, and head writer/producer Jess Oppenheimer. In March 1949 Gale Gordon took over the existing role of George's boss, Rudolph Atterbury, and Bea Benaderet was added as his wife, Iris. CBS brought “My Favorite Husband” to television in 1953, starring Joan Caulfield and Barry Nelson as Liz and George Coope. The television version ran two-and-a-half seasons, from September 1953 through December 1955, running concurrently with “I Love Lucy.” It was produced live at CBS Television City for most of its run, until switching to film for a truncated third season filmed (ironically) at Desilu and recasting Liz Cooper with Vanessa Brown.

MAIN CAST

Lucille Ball (Liz Cooper) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.

Richard Denning (George Cooper) was born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger Jr., in Poughkeepsie, New York. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Plans called for him to take over his father's garment manufacturing business, but he developed an interest in acting. Denning enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He is best known for his  roles in various science fiction and horror films of the 1950s. Although he teamed with Lucille Ball on radio in “My Favorite Husband,” the two never acted together on screen. While “I Love Lucy” was on the air, he was seen on another CBS TV series, “Mr. & Mrs. North.” From 1968 to 1980 he played the Governor on “Hawaii 5-0″, his final role. He died in 1998 at age 84.

Ruth Perrott (Katie, the Maid) was also later seen on “I Love Lucy.” She first played Mrs. Pomerantz, a member of the surprise investigating committee for the Society Matrons League in “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E25), as one of the member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” (ILL S3;E3), and also played a nurse when “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). She died in 1996 at the age of 96.

Bob LeMond (Announcer) also served as the announcer for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy”. When the long-lost pilot was finally discovered in 1990, a few moments of the opening narration were damaged and lost, so LeMond – fifty years later – recreated the narration for the CBS special and subsequent DVD release.

Bea Benadaret (Iris Atterbury) and Gale Gordon (Rudolph Atterbury) do not appear in this episode. 

GUEST CAST

Hans Conried (Mr. Benjamin Wood / Jimmy the Paper Boy) first co-starred with Lucille Ball in The Big Street (1942). He then appeared on “I Love Lucy” as used furniture man Dan Jenkins in “Redecorating” (ILL S2;E8) and later that same season as Percy Livermore in “Lucy Hires an English Tutor” (ILL S2;E13) – both in 1952. The following year he began an association with Disney by voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan. On “The Lucy Show” he played Professor Gitterman in “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (TLS S1;E19) and in “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (TLS S2;E1). He was probably best known as Uncle Tonoose on “Make Room for Daddy” starring Danny Thomas, which was filmed on the Desilu lot. He joined Thomas on a season 6 episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1973. He died in 1982 at age 64.

The character’s first name is not mentioned here, but it is in other episodes where Conried plays Mr. Wood.

THE EPISODE

ANNOUNCER: “Even in the happiest of marriages both the husband and wife have little habits that prove annoying over the years. With the Coopers it’s George’s habit of reading the newspaper at the breakfast table.  Well, unable to break him of this habit Liz is setting up a counter irritant. As we look in on them now she has just started a barrage of toast munching… It’s a war of nerves!”

The episode opens at breakfast, where Liz is upset that George has buried himself in the morning newspaper instead of paying attention to her. 

This was a common complaint on early episodes of “I Love Lucy” as well. Ricky often didn’t lift his eyes from behind the newspaper.  

LIZ: “I’ll speak to Katie and asks her to buy quieter bread. Or, I could puree the bread and eat it with a spoon.”

The phone rings. It is George’s old friend Charlie Nichols. Charlie is a Bullfrog, a member of their college Glee Club. Liz translates the slangy conversation between the old friends for Katie. George riffs a few notes of “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” into the phone with Charlie. 

"Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” is a popular song from 1925 written by Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson. A week before this episode aired, it was also the title of a Universal motion picture starring Donald O’Connor and Gloria DeHaven. In 1980 the film was referenced in “Lucy Moves To NBC” which featured O’Connor and DeHaven in a show-within-a-show sitcom called “The Music Mart”. 

Liz anticipates that George will want to find his old ukulele for his reunion with Charlie. Naturally, she’s right and naturally Liz has no idea where it is! George reminds her of the time she disposed of all his old clothes, a hint at a future episode titled “Husbands Are Sloppy Dressers” (E95) which would become “Changing The Boys’ Wardrobe” on “I Love Lucy”.  

GEORGE: “A man’s old clothes are filled with sentiment.” LIZ: “That’s sediment, not sentiment!” 

On “I Love Lucy” saxophone wasn’t the only instrument she was able to play. Lucy first plays the ukulele in “Ricky Loses His Voice” (ILL S2;E9), “Little Ricky Gets Stage Fright” (ILL S6;E4), and again in “Don Juan Is Shelved” (ILL S4;E22). Lucy Carmichael strummed the uke in “Lucy’s College Reunion” (TLS S2;E11). Fast forward to 1972 and Lucy and Kim Carter play the ukulele in “Lucy Goes Hawaiian: Part 2″ (HL S3;E24).

Liz denies having thrown away George’s prized ukulele. Liz asks George the last time he saw it and he says it was “just the other night at the alumni dinner” - in 1938!  Liz says it’s probably in the attic, and off they go to look for it. 

On “I Love Lucy,” Lucy Ricardo visited the attic to find a musical instrument, too - “The Saxophone” (ILL S2;E2). Of course, she finds other memories along the way. This was the series’ only visit to the attic of 623 East 68th Street. 

In the attic, George thinks he sees a prowler - but it is just Liz’s old dress dummy!  

Lucy Carter and her kids visits the attic for antiques and get a lesson in family history lesson in “Lucy Takes Over” (HL S2;E23). When first entering the darkened attic, Lucy screams when she runs into the dress dummy, just like George!

The box marked ‘ukulele’ is actually filled with ski boots!  Liz’s labeling system has resorted in confusion about what’s inside each box.  

This warped logic foreshadows Lucy Carmichael and Lucy Carter’s crazy filing system on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”  It never failed to confound Mr. Mooney / Harry (Gale Gordon). 

Liz finds her corsage collection - dried flowers of corsages given to her by high school boys. George finds his old electric train. Liz wants to throw out the trains, while George wants to toss the corsages.  

"Lucy Goes To Sun Valley” (LDCH S1;E5) opens with Lucy searching the living room closet for Ricky’s guitar strings. While doing so, she runs across  a pressed corsage of violets that Ricky gave to her during their courtship.

Hours later, Liz and George still haven’t thrown away anything and still haven’t found the ukulele. They agree to try again after lunch - but the attic door is locked. George calls for Katie - but she’s gone downtown to take George’s Glee Club sweater to the cleaners and is then off for the afternoon.  

From the attic window, Liz yells to neighbor Mr. Wood (Hans Conried) but he is working on his motorcycle and can’t hear them. Jimmy the Paper Boy (also Conried) thinks they want their newspaper tossed through the attic window.  It hits George square in the face.

George decides to ram the door with his shoulder like they do in the movies, but to no avail. 

GEORGE: “They must use fake doors in pictures.” LIZ: “Maybe they use real men!”

George has landed on his ukulele, which emerges unharmed. He strums and sings a few more bars of “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” - much to Liz’s chagrin.

More time passes and they are still locked in the attic. Liz notices the calendar on the attic wall says March. 

LIZ: “I wonder if it’s been a tough winter?”  

Liz starts to cry, but George wants her to laugh it off and think of it as an exciting adventure. Hunger starts to set in. Liz finds a piece of their ten year-old wedding cake. Petrified!. She spies a piece of cheese in a mousetrap!   

It is here the episode starts to foreshadow “Lucy in the Swiss Alps” (ILL S5;E21) in which the Ricardos and Mertz’s are trapped in an Alpine cabin due to an avalanche, where hunger is also an issue.  

Panic sets in - Liz is stir crazy and wants George to jump out of the window to get help. George gets the idea to make a rope ladder out of old drapes and lower Liz to the ground. 

The idea of escaping a high confinement by knotting sheets (or blankets or curtains) together to form a rope ladder is a familiar trope. It was later used in “The Star Upstairs” (ILL S4;E25) when Lucy Ricardo finds herself trapped in Cornel Wilde’s upstairs suite and chooses this method of escape. 

LIZ: “Just a moment.  Who’s lowering whom?” GEORGE: “I’m lowering you’m!” LIZ: “Over my’m dead body you’m are!” 

This exchange is very similar to “Vacation from Marriage” (ILL S2;E6) which finds Lucy and Ethel trapped on the roof when the door locks behind them. Lucy gets the idea to put a plank across the alleyway (five flights up) to the neighboring building, but naturally she wants Ethel to go first!  Ethel is reluctant to be the one to go first!

Practically speaking, Liz is not strong enough to hold George’s weight, so she has to be the one to be lowered. As Liz climbs onto the window ledge, Mr. Wood sees her and thinks she’s going to kill herself!  He rushes into the attic to save her.

MR. WOOD: “You have so much to live for. You’re young! You’re beautiful! You’re vibrant! Think of your husband!  Think of the children!” LIZ: “I don’t have any children.” MR. WOOD: “Well I have eleven children, you can have a couple of mine.”

Liz explains that she wasn’t suicidal but that they were locked in the attic. She demonstrates by shutting the door - accidentally locking them in again!  Katie arrive just in time and admits that she’s been home the whole time - asleep on her good ear!  Just as they are about to leave - the wind slams the door shut. Katie calmly announces that the firemen will let them out when they arrive after the explosion. 

LIZ: “What explosion?” KATIE: “I left the pressure cooker on the stove!”

Jamestown Colonist George Percy

Presented here in Mark Nicholls’ transcription, is, as Nicholls says, “a relentless catalog of woe and misery.” Percy recounts~they “ digge  upp  deade  corpes  outt  of  graves  to  eate  them.”

Percy composed it in 1625, thirteen years after returning to England, apparently referring a now-lost diary. In part a defense of Percy’s presidency during the 1609-10 Starving Time, the manuscript remained among his family’s private papers for more than three centuries, and not printed until 1922. Nicholls worked from the only original copy, now in the Elkins Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT- DESCRIBES MURDER AND CANNIBALISM

“Now  all  of  us  att  James  Towne  beginneinge  to  feele  the  sharpe  pricke  of  hunger  w[hi]ch  noe  man  trewly  descrybe  butt  he  w[hi]ch  hathe  Tasted  the  bitternesse thereof.
