How it all started:

Like many people in this community, I first found out about shifting through TikTok in 2020. In my case, it was around mid-September when I was scrolling through my FYP and saw the video that changed my life forever.

OK, that was a bit dramatic, but you get the point. The video that I saw was this girl acting out something that she claimed happened in her DR. The scene went something like this (my memory is really blurry, so bear with me):

She had just shifted back to her DR, and It was during the battle at Hogwarts. there were a bunch of people coming up to her saying things like "Where did you go?" and "We missed you so much"(your typical 2020 misinformation). the battle was starting, and she looked at everyone and said, "I know what will help us. everyone close your eyes, trust me." IDK, I think she was trying to group shift everyone out of her DR???? either way it didn't work but when they opened their eyes the portals from Avengers Endgame(I think) started opening up and the Avengers stepped out of them. Her reaction to that was like "Well I guess that also works".

There might have been more to it, but that's all I can remember right now. Also PLEASE tell me if you also saw that video and/or remember who posted it. I wonder what they're doing now.

At first, I was a little confused, but then I looked at the tags and saw one that said: "reality shifting." at this time, my FYP was filled with a bunch of fanfic-related stuff, So I guess because of that, I just assumed that reality shifting was just a weird fanfic tope used in crossover fics. I was also sort of on DracoTok, so I wasn't really confused about why I would be seeing Harry Potter fanfic on my FYP.

I scrolled away from the video and didn't think much of it until a few days later when I looked up the tag and saw a bunch of videos with advice and methods on how to shift. at this point I was very confused and I was just thinking "Wait, are these people being fr". After scrolling through the tag for a bit I found a video explaining what it was.

I don't know who made that video. But one thing I do know is that I have never doubted the existence of shifting since.

Why I started believing:

I'm just going to use bullet points for this section. but if you want me to go into more detail about anything, let me know.

my prior knowledge/belief of out-of-body experiences (i.e. astral projection)

my belief that humans are always more powerful than what we usually think/believe.

Also, potential TW: brief mention of drugs

probably the biggest reason was a story I heard from a YouTuber about one of his friends who, after taking DMT, claimed to have lived in a forest with elves for 3 years and was able to give a detailed description of what happened in those 3 years. The story I'm talking about is about 10 minutes into this video I immediately thought of this story when I saw videos of people talking about their experiences in their DRs. And since this drug is something that can be naturally produced by the brain, it didn't seem like much of a stretch to suggest that you could trigger its production without taking any drugs.

I want to make it very clear that I am not promoting or encouraging the use of drugs/illegal substances in order to shift.

My approach to shifting then vs. now:

I have always treated shifting like a skill. At first, I thought that if I practiced the methods/techniques I learned from Shifttok enough, I would eventually have to shift.

Now, I treat shifting as something you allow yourself to do rather than force. It's kind of like sleeping. The more you try to force it, the less likely it's going to happen.

More recently, I have been focusing more on improving my confidence when it comes to my abilities. In my opinion, it is not enough to intend to do something you also have to have the confidence to be able to do it.

I think that is why most people aren't shifting. There are only so many times a person can fail at something and not lose their confidence.

gonna be straightforward on this one, WHY IS TIKTOK SO TOXIC? when i decided to experiment on tiktok like last month by creating a new account, my for you page was full of pro-an@ and self-h**m influencing stuff. i know there are lots of video essays on youtube regarding this but this is seriously concerning for the amount of 12 year olds (or younger) who use tiktok and indulge this content because from what i've seen, kids will watch ANYTHING and remember that shit. i'm gonna give a real life example, i was at my 9 year old cousin's birthday party and i showed her a video of the iconic 90th anniversary fendi runway show at the trevi fountain (it's my favourite show :D). 3 weeks later, i come back and she asks me the question "who was that girl in the blue dress from that video?". so i'm pretty sure this proves my point. anyways i could give endless examples of this but i don't wanna make this longer than it is already. my point is that this is seriously concerning for the younger generation, especially with those youtube shorts with the subway surfers on the right hand side of the screen and this guy talking about creepy-pastas on the left. first of all, this is basically enforcing ADHD in them since its limiting their attention span to the borderline at this point, second of all, 99% of the time that info is not true and filling your brain with misinformation. back to the point, kids will take in that content which is really harmful for them mentally and physically, this applies to boys too cus those gym videos which i always see on my fyp are pretty harmful to them and i personally don't think tiktok should be for kids.

Highschool sucks

When I was little I was always getting called ugly. I used to have a little mustache when I was little so they would make fun of me for that. Then when I got older they would make fun of my teeth saying that I looked like a rabbit and asked me if I wanted carrots or something. Then I got even older and it got worse, the girls in my class wouldn't let me play with them because I was so ugly.. or they would call me a man. So when I got in middle school I switched schools and got braces, silly little me thing that it would fix things. It didn't. When I had my braces I had two little gaps in my teeth where my teeth would grow in at and they would make fun of me for that.

They called me four teeth and said that I looked like a man all the way to end of my eighth grade year. I finally thought that I would be free that summer and that I could had a glow up and everything would be ok, but then they posted about me on tiktok. They posted about how ugly I was and how I thought I was all that. None of my "friends" tried to stand up for me. All they did was laugh and egg them on. Not once did they asked if it hurt my feelings.. or if I was ok. So I stopped talking to everyone. I hated myself, and I begged god every night to take my life and let me be with him.

Cause I didn't understand my purpose anymore. Why did I have to go through this when I didn't do anything. All I wanted was to be like everyone else.. to look like every other pretty girl in my grade. So I spent my whole summer trying to glow up. I put on makeup, got a new clothes, new shoes,, the whole shabang ya know? So then i went to school and got some new friends even found myself a boyfriend and made the varsity volleyball team.

Yeah that happiness only lasted for a little while. Soon people started to think i was aggravating and loud. I hang around them but you can tell they don't want to hang around me. Then my boyfriend got tired of me and dumped me. Which turns out he only wanted me so he could hit. Which i kind of knew that there was no way he could really like me because he's so handsome and I'm just me. plain old aggravating me.

After we broke up he got with a different girl just a few days after. He even asked her to be his valentine. He gave her the gift that he got me. I told all of my friends it didn't matter course i had been cheating on him even though i wasn't.. i just need something to make me feel better. The girl was so much more prettier than me too.. she's short and very curvy. She has pretty teeth and great humor so no wonder he wanted her.

So now here I am. Its almost the end of freshman year.. all my friends are tired of me.. my boyfriend left me.. and I feel like I literally have nobody. I thought that's this year would have been different but I'm at the same spot I was last year. I'm have a lot of best friends but I'm nobody's bestfriend.. and all the boys that I wanted to talk to ended up talking with my friends. This reminds me of a paper I had to write about the Leopold I statue in Antwerp, Belgium.

Not everyone in Antwerp was a fan of King Leopold I. So when the statue was planned to be placed, 1868, accusations about being "anti-Antwerp" or "anti-patriotic" where thrown to both sides of the debate. One newspaper even wrote that "bloody incidentes" may happen were the statue to be placed. (The discussion was mostly fought in newspapers.)

Before we begin, here are a few notes :

-I did not come up with this guide out of thin air, this guide is a summary of all the videos/tiktok that were genuinely helpful to me.

-Unless you have an already deep voice, chances are you will not sounds like a cisgender man but a cisgender boy, which is still amazing! Keep in mind there's a lot of cis men who have the voice of a teenager, so don't let this beat you down.

Now lets start!

1.a - HOW TO HAVE A DEEPER PITCH, OR HOW TO BREATH LIKE DARTH VADER

This may sounds silly to you, but this is the key to having a deeper voice. Here's how to do it:

-Open up your mouth as if you had a big balloon in it, round your lips and breathe in. Change your tongue position if needed.

Congratulations! You're now breathing like Darth Vader! But what the fuck is this supposed to do? Long story short, breathing this way allow you to open up your throat, which results in your voice sounding deeper! Ok that nice but what should I do now? Vocalize! But take it slowly :

-First focus on saying the vowel "a" while keeping your throat opened, which is trickier than you'd think.

-Second, move on to the others vowels, still keeping your throat opened. It may take you a couple days to nail this down but this is very important.

-Lastly, talk! Try to read a book outloud or maybe a reddit post. From this point on your goal is to build "endurance", at first you'll be able to talk like this for maybe a minute or two but with time you'll be able to talk for longer period of time.

1.b - CAN'T DO IT? YAWN OR TURN INTO A DOG

Here are two alternative techniques to achieve that deeper pitch. Please note they are just different ways to achieve the same results, I've added them so if the previous technique one doesn't work for you these might help.

YAWNING :

You might have noticed that when you yawn, you open your mouth as wide as you can, to the point where it can even hurt sometimes. This is to let as much air inside your lung as possible. You know what your body does too when you yawn?

It opens your throat which is EXACTLY what we're looking for.

So if you're struggling with the dark vader thingy, yawn!

SMALL DOG AND BIG DOG :

Have you ever noticed how big and small dogs breathes differently? Chihuahua take quick, short breath and Labradors take big, deep breathes. Weirdly enough, going from imitating the breathing of a small dog to a big one seems to allow people to open their throats. In my opinion, out of all the above exercises its the least intuitive, but eh maybe it will help you see what I mean by "breathing with an open throat".

VOCAL FRY : NO NOT THE DEATH METAL KIND

English isn't my first language, so I'll let Professor google tell you what vocal fry is:

-"a way of speaking in which the voice is very low-pitched and has a characteristic rough or creaking sound."

Notice how it says low-pitched? Its because your voice typically goes in a vocal fry when its a deep one, due to this vocal fry sounds more natural on men (who society expects to have deep voices) than on women (type vocal fry on youtube and you'll see PLENTY of people complaining about women with vocal fry and how "unattractive it is"). A little bit of vocal fry won't hurt your voice, as long as you don't use it constantly.

I don't really know how to teach you how to go in a vocal fry, as I'm still learning myself (and people on the internet seems to be more interested in not having one than learning how to do it) but my best advice is that whenever you do your voice training, pay attention if you ever go in a vocal fry, and if you do - keep going! Try to maintain that vocal fry for a bit, to see how it feel so next time you'll have an easier time going in a vocal fry when you want to.

Earlier I said you shouldn't talk constantly with a vocal fry, so you might be wondering " well WHEN shoud I talk with a vocal fry?" A good rule of thumb is that you should use it toward the end of your words or phrases. But personally I like to listen to men talking and take note of when they go in a vocal fry, so I can get a better understanding of it.

3- I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO PUT ALL OF THESE TIPS SO HERE THEY ARE

-When doing the Darth Vader breathing technique, you shouldn’t feel any strain or irritation in your voice. It might get sore after awhile but it should never hurt. If you feel like you’re about to gag or if you sound like Patrick Star, then bring your tongue forward. Your tongue should be RELAXED, not pushed forward or downward, let it sit naturally in your mouth (if it goes too far in the back then gently bring it forward, don't force it)

-Pay attention to your larynx, I noticed my larinx tend to lower itself when I'm not careful enough during my voice training. So be careful! If your larynx start to lower itself, take a deep breath and start the exercise over. Over using your larynx can result in serious vocal damage, so I can't say this enough - RELAX YOUR LARYNX

-Try to talk in a bit more monotone voice, no need to talk like you're tired all of the time tho. Just avoid using your "customer service" voice.

-Drink water! More than you think you need! And it need to be warm, not cold

Yes yes yes to all of the things you just reblogged about tiktok and atyd. I've been in the fandom since the terms used where slash and lemon. So a while. I don't know if it because lots of new fans are really young (I'm talking 13-15 years old. Literal children) but I've been the one who now feels "uncomfy" in the fandom because well, I like complex, raw and real portray of characters and not versions reduced (by the readers) to a bunch of bullet points taken religiously. Highly recommend) but it's mature and I'm pretty sure would be considered really problematic by the same people (especially the bits about Remus past). I'm seeing a trend in this fandom that I absolutely do no like. Atyd is a fanfiction. Nothing more. Everyone has their hc. And if you are a child do not consume media that's not made for you. Fanfic authors are not responsible for your inability to read tags. If they want to write pwp (with or without the plot) and you feel uncomfy bc you are a child and description of sex should make you uncomfortable DON'T READ IT. If you are 14 your understanding of adults is not complete, because you aren't one. You can't know. But if I, an adult, wants to write a lie low at lupins where two other adults take out their frustration by having angry sex after a shouting match of insults and low blows well, Im bloody hell writing it and won't be made feel bad about it.

Like literally, folks began using ATYD as a replacement in tags for like marauders and shit, and that was INSANE to me!! And like this is absolutely no hate to the author because I’m sure they are lovely, and they should obviously be so fucking proud of what they wrote and how huge it is, but JFC I hate it when folks find one FIC to latch onto and pretend this is the end all be all for FICs written for marauders era, this was way before my time, but I’ve been told countless times over that this was basically what happened when The Shoebox Project came out, and it’s just maddening to me!! Like ppl taking characterizations from a specific FIC and pretending this is the holy grail, only valid thing??? Like fuck off, no! And it’s also pretty obvious, and I’m sure the author wouldn’t be insulted by this, but ATYD feels very inspired by the movie versions of the marauders we got, and I just simply don’t vibe with those sort of personifications rip.

The only responsibility a writer has is to warn you in those sections, LEGIT THAT’S ALL THEY HAVE TO DO!! And like listen, when I was a wee ten year old trying to read FIC, I was stuck with fucking FF net and read shit I definitely shouldn’t have been reading becs I wasn’t lucky enough to have AO3 and all of the ways it protects and warns minors.
