Please cut wasteful Pentagon spending now!
AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS
887 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
I am a constituent who believes the failure to control wasteful Pentagon spending makes it harder to meet our country’s needs. The U.S. spends more on the military than any other country in the world, yet we repeatedly fail to spend the required amount of funds on food, housing, health care, and education that our communities need.
Recently, the DoD failed its audit for the sixth time in a row when it failed to account for $1.9 trillion―half its $3.8 trillion budget.
The Department of Defense is the only federal agency that has never passed a full audit and they didn’t even complete audits until 2018.
As your constituent, I am asking you to cut wasteful Defense spending in FY 2025 government funding bills.
Federal dollars that go to wasteful Department of Defense contracts are funds that do not go to meet human needs. One-third to one-half of the Pentagon budget goes to corporate military contractors that drastically price gouge the DoD by as much as 40%.
Trillions of dollars spent―and unaccounted for―undermine our security by preventing us from investing in the shared prosperity that comes from more housing, climate and public health protections, ending hunger, and more education.
Please cut wasteful Pentagon spending and invest that money in vulnerable communities.

This week, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted, once again, to allocate a record amount of money to fund war all over the world. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), passed by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, stands at $895 billion, the largest military budget, in nominal terms, of any country in human history. The annual military funding bill, which is scheduled to be considered by the Senate and signed into law by the end of the month, has grown 47 percent, from $607 billion a decade ago. The average American has absolutely no idea what is in the bill or how it compares to historical precedent. This is by design. Beyond a cursory discussion of disagreements between Democrats and Republicans over gender-affirming care for the children of soldiers, there is a total information blackout on the actual contents of the bill. And that is doubly true for its central policy focus: expanding and modernizing the US nuclear arsenal for what US military planners call the “new nuclear age.” Not a single article by any major US publication has examined in any detail the bill’s plans to expand the nuclear arsenal. A completely different reality emerges on the House committee write-ups of the bill, which the vast majority of the public will never see. The official summary of the bill by the Democrats in the House Armed Services Committee prominently highlights nuclear buildup, focusing on the bill’s “funding of nuclear modernization efforts” and its plan to “modernize the land-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad.” The bill, according to its official committee summary, “[R]equires a DOD plan for deterring and defeating simultaneous aggression by two near-peer nuclear competitors, including requirements for nuclear force sizing.” The bill includes provisions for the modernization of every single component of the US nuclear arsenal, from nuclear submarines to intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear bombers, and creates and fields an entirely new class of nuclear weapons, known as the “Nuclear Sea-Launched Cruise Missile.”

The Defense #Budget is Morally Offensive
“They got money for war, but can’t feed the poor” Tupac Shakur Anytime I mention the >$845 billion annual budget for the Military Industrial Complex I am always greeted by either confusion, deflection or anger. Anger is the one that gives me that kind of self mutilating joy. Such sadness and disappointment at my fellow human that they feel the need to take up verbal defense of an entity that…

'Put it on The Ledger': Pentagon Fails 7th Annual Financial Audit
Pentagon Audit Results 📟 7 Accurate: Unmodified opinions confirm reliability. 1 Qualified Opinion: Minor exceptions noted. 21 Unverified: Disclaimers issued for lack of evidence.
The United States Department of Defense has failed its annual financial audit for the seventh consecutive year, unable to fully account for its $824 billion budget. The audit, conducted by independent auditors, revealed that the Pentagon could not provide sufficient financial data to support a clean opinion, highlighting ongoing challenges in financial management and accountability. Comptroller…

Failed Audit
The Pentagon has failed its SIXTH audit in a row! "Half of DOD’s assets can’t be accounted for."
For a SIXTH time in a row, you read that right, six times, the Pentagon has failed its audit. No one seems to know what we are spending our billions and billions on.
And you know what makes it worse? We only started auditing the Pentagon on a yearly basis in 2018. This means the Pentagon has NEVER passed an audit.

“The country is sprinting towards a trillion-dollar budget for weapons and war -- propping up an expensive and harmful militarized foreign policy while people struggle to meet their basic needs. We cannot continue down this morally bankrupt path.”

TWO MONTHS BEFORE Hamas attacked Israel, the Pentagon awarded a multimillion-dollar contract to build U.S. troop facilities for a secret base it maintains deep within Israel’s Negev desert, just 20 miles from Gaza. Code-named “Site 512,” the longstanding U.S. base is a radar facility that monitors the skies for missile attacks on Israel. On October 7, however, when thousands of Hamas rockets were launched, Site 512 saw nothing — because it is focused on Iran, more than 700 miles away. The U.S. Army is quietly moving ahead with construction at Site 512, a classified base perched atop Mt. Har Qeren in the Negev, to include what government records describe as a “life support facility”: military speak for barracks-like structures for personnel. Though President Joe Biden and the White House insist that there are no plans to send U.S. troops to Israel amid its war on Hamas, a secret U.S. military presence in Israel already exists. And the government contracts and budget documents show it is evidently growing. The $35.8 million U.S. troop facility, not publicly announced or previously reported, was obliquely referenced in an August 2 contract announcement by the Pentagon. Though the Defense Department has taken pains to obscure the site’s true nature — describing it in other records merely as a “classified worldwide” project — budget documents reviewed by The Intercept reveal that it is part of Site 512. (The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)
