Reading Tess Sharpe's 6 Times We Almost Kissed (and One Time We Did) (which I'll be referring to without its subtitle for the majority of this review), was like handling Pandora's Box. The book was tempting with its cute cover and promise of a Sapphic enemies-to-lovers story. Then I began reading and the monsters kept spilling out. There's so much darkness in those pages, sometimes graphic. However, I promise there's hope in the end. Please take the content warnings list seriously for this book. I absolutely recommend the novel, but only if you understand it's not as light as the cover and title imply. 

6 Times We Almost Kissed takes place during the summer when Penny's mother donates part of her liver to Tate's mother. Done in order to save Tate's mother from cancer. Penny and Tate bicker constantly, but they must call a truce if they want to cut down on possible stress for their mothers. Except they both have feelings for the other that they've been trying to ignore. How long will it take for those to come to the surface without the banter standing in the way? To make things more intense, Tate and her mother move in with Penny and her's to save money. The romantic feelings aren't the only secrets being buried. Penny's awful relationship with her mother has been unaddressed for too long. Will anyone be able to get through the summer without breaking?

Like, as far as I remember there was little overlaps between seasons. There might be some comments and jokes I won’t get. I might not know why the equivalent of a severed hand in a box is so important. I might be unfamiliar with some monsters or side characters inserted into the narrative in the previous seasons.

To be honest, I’d probably have to rewatch all the Capaldi-episodes as well. All I remember is the horrible “what happens to people after they get cremated” episode and the Doctor riding a tank while playing an e-guitar…

It was Olivia Rodrigo that introduced both Tate McRae and (Y/n) (L/n) to each other. Olivia and (Y/n) both starred in the hit Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series where they both had very public breakups from their co-stars. This caused their characters to leave the show together after (Y/n)'s character, Penny, agreed to help Nini find herself, complete with a shared on-screen kiss that shocked viewers and created a shipping frenzy. This shipping frenzy was so big that both Olivia and (Y/n) are still asked today if they were dating, more than two years after they left the show. This bothered Tate, who was currently watching them from across her own living room cuddled up under a blanket, watching TikTok. This wasn't the first time Tate had gotten jealous of her girlfriend and Olivia. In fact, there were five more times that made this one all the more annoying.

The first instance happened two weeks before Tate made it official with (Y/n). (Y/n) had come over to her apartment, just because, to see Tate. Only, she was adorning Olivia's hoodie. "No way, you got an exclusive Sour hoodie?" Tate questioned with a grin, looking over the hoodie. She then had her world rocked when (Y/n) admitted that it was actually Olivia's and that she brought it so she could return it. That was when Tate went to pull out her own hoodie that read 'T8' on the back, telling (Y/n) she now had a replacement that she never had to return. It was a quick and easy fix, and her jealousy was quickly pushed away by (Y/n)'s wide smile as she pulled off the Sour hoodie and replaced it with Tate's hoodie.

The second situation was a month into the two of them dating at a public event. They were coming out as a couple, holding hands when Olivia came by to greet them. Instead of the paparazzi catching Tate and (Y/n) holding hands, they caught the reuniting 'rumored girlfriends' hugging. The next morning, Tate was excited to see what the public thought about their grand coming out, only to see that social media frenzied over the wrong couple. It was pop icons Tate McRae and (Y/n) (L/n). No, instead it was pop icons Olivia Rodrigo and (Y/n) (L/n). The headlines caused a the familiar feeling the Tate experienced a little two months ago to rumble in her chest. Only to receive a text from (Y/n) saying 'The public got it all wrong. Wanna go live with me later to correct them?' The simple action calmed Tate since she didn't even have to complain to (Y/n) about the press reporting the wrong couple in the news.

Perhaps the third time is what caused Tate to almost feel eternally jealous in their presence. (Y/n) had stayed the night at Tate's apartment and Olivia, with this knowledge, came over to ask (Y/n) a question. (Y/n), who had been making out with her stopped, seeing Olivia texted she was coming over to ask a question, to go answer it. Of course, it had been only a ten minute question, and it was about music, but it put Tate is rather a foul mood and caused her to not want to make out anymore. It did also bring up the discussion of jealousy. "I understand and I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were feeling this way. If I ever make you feel jealous, just let me know, I'll take a step back." Tate felt a little bad since (Y/n) was so understanding of her fears on the subject. So, she tried to just drop the jealous feeling herself. After all, they were best friends. She wasn't in Olivia's bed, she was in hers.

The fourth time wasn't particularly either Olivia's or (Y/n)'s fault. It was just TikTok edit after TikTok edit of either Olivia and (Y/n) or their High School Musical: The Musical: The Series characters. It just annoyed Tate to the point she had to look up edits of her and (Y/n), seeing there was a stark decrease in the number of edits. Tate sighed, scrolling through and she couldn't help but note that they were really cute. Especially when (Y/n) just dropped an entire love album with songs inspired by Tate, even writing an entire song called 'Tate.' This eased her jealousy slightly as she put on the album and decided to finally close her eyes for the night.

The final reason came within a year into their relationship. While Tate had never completely shook the feeling of jealousy, she definitely got better at feeling like it was eating her apart. The final reason came when they were attending an Olivia Rodrigo concert. While she couldn't help the jealous feeling from building in the pit of her stomach, she would always go and support her best friends. She just wasn't expecting Olivia to bring (Y/n) on stage for a duet, the two embracing tightly at the end of it. Even though it wasn't a love song, Tate knew how the media would take this duet. She knew it was dumb to feel any jealousy towards this moment, but she couldn't help it. She still smiled when (Y/n) returned, glistening with a bit of sweat as the two kissed, but she knew the smile didn't reach her eyes.

Now, the current issue. Olivia had just helped (Y/n) move into Tate's apartment. While, yes, this was now also (Y/n)'s apartment and she could invite who she wanted, Tate was tired and wanted some time alone. She even announced that she was going to shower and go to bed. She fully expected (Y/n) to tell Olivia the same before going to bed with her. Instead, after her girlfriend didn't join her in the shower and after thirty minutes of lying in bed without her, Tate went to go see where she was. Her eyes narrowed when she saw the two of them curled together watching TikToks. "(Y/n)," her voice got their attention, and she was silently pleading with the girl. "I'm tired and it's cold in the room. Can you come to bed?" At that, Olivia finally made her exit, leaving Tate to once and for all remind (Y/n) who she belonged to.

As soon as the door clicked close and (Y/n) locked it, Tate had her pressed against the door, kissing her hungrily. Her hands held her firmly and (Y/n) couldn't help the moan that slipped from her lips, despite the initial shock from the kiss and the action. When Tate pulled away, she left a string of spit in her wake, connecting the two of them. She broke off the string, pulling (Y/n) to the bedroom, flipping off light switches on the way to bed. "I guess I need to remind you who you belong to since I found you in there cuddled up with Olivia, don't I?" Tate questioned, her eyes dark. (Y/n)'s heart was racing and when she didn't answer, Tate rolled her eyes. "Answer me. Do I need to remind you?" She questioned, straddling her girlfriend's lap as she pushed her onto the bed.

It was obvious that (Y/n) was needy as she went to kiss Tate. However, due to not answering immediately, Tate declined the kiss. "No, I don't need reminding. I belong to you, Tate." This was the first time that Tate was bringing her jealousy into the bedroom. While it seemed to shock (Y/n), it also seemed to turn her on. She was squirming under her, and she knew she fucked up by allowing her best friend to overstay her welcome. She also knew that she didn't call Tate by the right now by the quirk of her eyebrow. "I belong to you and you alone, Mommy." She promised, her words sounding like a whine. Her cheeks were red from embarrassment as she bit her lower lip. The obvious sense of neediness causing Tate to smirk.

She removed her body from her girlfriend's stripping her completely after (Y/n) had said she wanted her to. Goosebumps prickled (Y/n)'s skin as she watched her girlfriend, not realizing how green-eyed with jealousy she had gotten until their eyes met. Tate's eyes were dark, and she realized that what she had done had obviously effected her, though she didn't realize it would. At that moment, she decided to take a step away from Olivia, not wanting to upset her girlfriend again. For now, she would let Tate use her.

"Look at you, such a pretty slut for me. I'm going to fuck you until you forget her name." Tate taunted, eyes looking over her. (Y/n) shivered under her girlfriend's gaze. Even through her insecurities, she knew that Tate was eating her alive with her eyes. She didn't have time to answer as Tate crashed their lips together, fingers traveling down her body. Tate only stopped for a second, making sure (Y/n) was okay, and when (Y/n) gave her full, verbal consent, she let her thumb rub familiar patterns into her clit. Tate was cut off by a kiss, causing her eyes to widen, but they quickly shut as she kissed back. She cupped (Y/n)'s cheeks until they finally pulled away from each other. "I should be the one apologizing. You've already approached me with you feeling jealous, and instead of changing things up like I promised to do, I stuck with my old ways. It's not an excuse, but I think it's hard when we got so close due to our breakups. Pulling away is almost like saying goodbye to those early days of stardom that we experienced together. But… I'm ready to give our friendship that space to grow so I can grow with you. I think I just needed to realize her and I could still be friends, even if I spent less time with her. I'm sorry, Tate, for it taking me so long to realize that, and for hurting you." She said softly. She pressed her lips on Tate's forehead.

Tate smiled a bit at the apology and the kiss. "Thank you for understanding." Tate said softly, her jealousy finally leaving her body. She moved to let (Y/n) get in the shower, sitting on toilet seat since she just wanted to talk. She did depart to throw her girlfriend's towel and pajamas in the drier so they'd be warm for her when she got out. After (Y/n) pulled on her pajamas, the two of them joined each other in bed. It was the first night of them living together, and what started out rough, was ending up a lot better. Tate was proud that they communicated their feelings (and for getting (Y/n) to scream her name so loud, they probably got a noise complaint). She kissed her cheek, curling into her girlfriend as (Y/n)'s arms wrapped around her lovingly.

What I love about watching Catherine Tate's convention panels is that she is making it into her own show, she is doing stand-up comedy with audience interaction and participation possibility for everyone who wants to. She basically does what she loves most - comedy entertainment. And she does it so brilliantly! She doesn't even need a moderator, she can work with audience so effortlessly! Like people can tell her jokes, come up to the stage and do bits with her, and everyone gets to ask a question or take a photo with her if they wish, and she is so sweet and kind to everyone and everybody gets a hug. Her panels are worth every penny people pay for it because they get to have a blast and they get a full Catherine Tate experience and the best time ever!

I read “six times we almost kissed” for the first time this month and it touched me in such a way I cannot simply describe it with words. I read it three times already, the whole thing about Penny and her relationship with her mother just resonated with me and Tate and Penny are so tender and sweet with each other I don’t think I ever read a romance that made me feel this way, so thank you for writing it!! Also, what are the chances of us getting some sort of sequel? I would love to see more of them, their first date, first time, the struggle about their different ideas of future, anyway, I love them, love the book and love your writing. Thank you for being awesome and bringing Penny and Tate to my heart.

Oh you are super kind, I'm so pleased it spoke to you! So many of you have asked me if I will write more in the 6 TIMES universe and I am always so flattered and I always feel so bad when I say: I'm sorry, it's a stand-alone. I know it's kind of strange to say "I don't really write sequels as Tess Sharpe" when I'm about to release a sequel to another book in the UK a few weeks and the US a few weeks after that, but that one is my outlier in a big way. I really prefer to write stand-alones and my next 5 books in my Tess Sharpe writing life are pretty much mapped out thematically and they're all stand-alones as well. The US paperback of 6 TIMES which will be out May 14 has a bonus short story about Penny and Tate's first date at Ross Dress for Less (a place of chaos and discovery) and it explores the shopping game that Tate and Anna used to play when Tate was a child, which is a plot point I had to cut from the second draft of the book for length.

It is a very short story I want to stress because we had to fit it in the space we had (paper is expensive!!) but I am really fond of it and I was so happy to be able to slip it in there for everyone who wanted to see a little more after the kiss <3

Penny and Tate have always clashed.
