It wasn’t every morning that Schneider woke before you, or anyone else in the house for that matter but these last couple of days had been particularly hard for your boyfriend of four months, and whilst you were usually the one he turned to first when he was struggling, right now he was turning to those at AA to help him through this time. Not that he wasn’t using you and the family for support as well but you knew what could happen if he didn’t go to the meetings and have his sponsor on board. He could end up in a really bad place again and you didn’t want that, especially not when he’d received the news that his father had been diagnosed with cancer just a couple of weeks ago. Stage 4. So you supported him, helped him the best you could in this new part of your relationship, though things hadn’t really changed too much from your friendship/landlord-tenant relationship to the two of you dating, now it just meant that there was a lot more cuddling involved and a lot more sleepovers and kissing as well. As you sit up in the bed that usually had your boyfriend occupying it more often than not these days you noticed the post-it note that sat on the bedside table 

Gone to AA, will be back soon. Love you Pat xx it read and you smiled.

That smile is still on your face as you make your way out to the kitchen to get your morning coffee, your Mami dancing away as your children sit at the table eating breakfast.

“Schneider said he’d be back by 8 Mami, before you head out to work” Elena says and you nod with a smile, kissing your daughter a top her head

“Thank you babaye” you say and she smiles

“I’m happy for you Mami” she says and you smile

“Hmm?’ you ask taking a sip of your coffee

“You seem really happy with Schneider. I mean it was a little weird at first but I’m happy your happy” she says and your heart melts a little at your daughters acceptance

“Yeah Mami, you do seem happy and aside from what’s happening with Schneider’s dad he seems really happy too”. You're about to say something to both your children when the door to your apartment opens and in walks your boyfriend, in his hand a small bouquet of flowers and you can’t help but smile at him as he makes his way towards you.

“Morning everyone, morning Pen” he greets, before handing you the bouquet and placing a kiss on your forehead. You look down at your watch. 7.35, more than enough time to talk with him about his AA meeting and whatever could be bothering him whilst you got ready for work. You hold out your hand to him and he follows as you make your way down the hallway to your room. 

Upon entering your room you strip out of your bed clothes and reach for your bra and work uniform.

“I’m not really in the mood for that right now Pen” he admits and you give a small smile as you turn to him after pulling your shirt over your head.

“Well it’s a good thing that wasn’t what I brought you in here to do. How are you feeling Pat? We haven’t really talked since your father gave you the news and I just want you to know that I’m still here for you” you say and he nods as he pulls you into his embrace.

“I know you are Pen, and I am so grateful to you and to your family. I just feel lost right now. Like that same little kid who was yearning for his father to appreciate him. Now I could lose him and not even have him know that even after all this time I still love him” he says, tears falling down his cheeks. You hold his face in your hands, wiping the tears with your thumbs as you say

“It’s alright to feel everything you're feeling Pat, I would think you even more of a mess than you were if you didn’t. But he’s your father and no matter what he did, no matter how he treated you throughout your life you are allowed to care and love him. And I will be here with you through it all” you say and he smiles a watery smile as he looks down at you and says

“Thank you Pen”.

My only rule is, they can't canonically have magical powers in their own universe, or else I'd try to assign them based on what magic powers they have. I want to do this based on their character development and the ideals of their Radiant order.

Penelope Alvarez from One Day at a Time - Windrunner

I love One Day at a Time, it's one of my comfort shows. And now that I think about it, Penelope is very similar to Kaladin. They're both veterans who work in healthcare and struggle with depression. Protecting her family and the people around her is one of Penelope's main motivations, and we see her really come into her own as a leader over the course of the series. TV mom of all time, honestly.

Nancy Wheeler from Stranger Things - Skybreaker

I'm not saying Nancy is a cop. Far from it. I think she is motivated by justice though. Nothing gets her going like seeing others being unfairly dealt with, whether it's her friend's death being covered up or a little old lady not being listened to. I will say that she is like the canon Skybreakers in that she has faith in the system and she generally tries to work within it. It's only when supernatural circumstances defy the way the system is supposed to work that she reaches for her gun.

Edward Teach from Our Flag Means Death - Dustbringer/Releaser

Blackbeard is why the Releaser oaths are so concerned with self mastery. He caused so much destruction even without having any magical powers, imagine if he could incinerate things with a touch. Despite all that, Ed refused to let himself directly kill anyone because of what murder has turned him into. His character development is about learning the self control required to create instead of destroy. Also, he totally dresses like an ashspren, they would see him as one of them.

Blanca Evangelista from Pose - Edgedancer

Another iconic TV mom. Caring for the forgotten is not only Blanca's entire thing - breaking off and starting her own house specifically for that purpose is literally the inciting incident of the whole show. Taking care of others is how she copes with the difficult circumstances of her own life, but her friends remind her to take care of herself as well. The actress who plays her - Michaela Jae Rodriguez - moves with a grace that perfectly suits an Edgedancer.

Elle Woods from Legally Blonde - Truthwatcher

I woke up this morning thinking, "Elle Woods would totally be a Truthwatcher," which is what inspired me to make this post. She learns to value scholarship, and she basically uses Progression on all the friends she makes over the course of the movie. Elle heals Paulette's self confidence by helping her realize her best self. She and Vivian help each other realize they both deserve better than Warner. And she speaks truth to power, whether it's to her bestie's shitty ex or her asshole of a professor.

Wirt from Over the Garden Wall - Lightweaver

Probably the easiest to assign an order to. Aside from having the dramatic tendencies and creative ability of most Lightweavers, Wirt definitely lies to himself and others a lot. The show is very focused on Wirt learning and speaking his truths. I also think having a Cryptic with him 24/7 would drive him up the wall in the most hilarious way.

Janine Teagues from Abbott Elementary - Elsecaller

I thought about making her an Edgedancer, I really did. The Edgedancer ideals are a big part of her motivation for getting into teaching. But her character development is headed more in the direction of self actualization. She doesn't only want to be a teacher, she wants to be the best teacher possible. Janine also has the cautious personality and logical problem-solving skills of an Elsecaller.

Prince Wilhelm from Young Royals - Willshaper

Because Wille is constantly surrounded by lies, my first thought was that he'd be a Lightweaver. But he doesn't have the temperament to be a good illusionist. His character arc is more about seeking freedom and self expression for himself as well as others. Okay, mainly for himself. He's just a kid, but now that he (spoilers!) has abdicated the throne he can totally rage against the machine.

Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place - Stoneward

Eleanor starts out as probably the worst candidate for a Stoneward you could imagine. Good thing her show is all about self development! Her friends really come to rely on her by the time season 4 rolls around. Her team becomes her main motivation, and she overcomes her defensive selfishness to connect with and be there for others. The one Stoneward quality she did have from the get-go would definitely be her stubbornness, though.

Leslie Knope from Parks & Rec - Bondsmith

Leslie is all about unity and bringing people together. Her personality alone is powerful enough to be a Bondsmith. I definitely think she could fight Dalinar and steal the Stormfather from him, don't you? Maybe it's a good thing she can't worldhop . . .

You loved Elena with your whole heart, even if you were both sixteen it felt as though you were to have a great future together. You were Elena’s first girlfriend as she had only recently come out as a lesbian whereas you had been out for a little longer. Before she came out you had been friends but had liked her more than just as friends, so when she admitted she liked you too and had hidden those feelings along with her sexuality for quite a while.

Although the two of you had been together for a while, you hadn’t met her family yet. You obviously knew her little brother Alex from school, but you hadn’t met her mother or her grandma yet. She was apprehensive to let you meet them as she claimed they were terribly embarrassing however you wanted to meet them nevertheless, so she agreed to ask if you could come over for dinner.

You walked home with Elena back to the flat she shared with her family. Before she could unlock the door, she turned to you.

“Are you sure you want to meet them?” She asked apprehensively.

“Of course.”

She let out a sigh before she opened the door. You knew she didn’t want you to meet them, but once the plaster was ripped off it would be a lot easier.

As you entered the flat, you noticed how welcoming and homely it was, it wasn’t what you’d imagine from Elena’s home with the way she spoke of her mother and grandma, but it was better than expected.

“Mamá,” she shouted to her mother whom wasn’t in the room.

“Elena is your friend with you?” her mother called back.

Elena rolled her eyes, giving you an apologetic smile.

“My girlfriend, yes she is here.”

Before anything else could be said the curtains to your left were flung open revealing a woman.

“Elena,” she screeched, “she is not a Cuban girl.”

“No Grandma, she isn’t Cuban,” Elena sighed, giving your hand a gentle squeeze to assure you that everything was to be okay.

Her Grandmother rushed over to you, staring you in the eyes before cupping your cheeks with her hands, showing you a humungous smile.

“But she is very beautiful,” she grinned, “And look at that smile on your face Elena, she makes you happy.”

“She does make me very happy, abuelita,” Elena smiled.

“Mamá, don’t scare of Elena’s girlfriend,” another woman said coming into the room from the back door.

“I am not scaring her,” Elena’s nan stated.

Elena looked at you, giving you the warm smile that you loved dearly.

“Y/N, this is my abuelita Lydia and my mamá Penelope,” she smiled.

“Nice to meet you,” you said softly knowing that her family was going to be terribly fun to spend time with.

It had been a long time since you had needed comfort in the middle of the night like this, normally you could make it through without having to seek comfort from your best friend. You had bolted upright mere seconds ago, breath racing and heart pounding at some stupid nightmare that had changed from watching people in your own squadron pass away, unable to save them to those people, those faces now being that of your best friend and new boyfriend, Schneider. You reached out for your phone and flicked a quick message to him, an SOS, knowing that he would be here for you in a matter of minutes, especially as you felt the silent tears fall down your cheeks. Schneider had been staying over more frequently lately but on the nights when you had an early shift at the clinic he wouldn’t so that you didn’t have to drag yourself away from your comfort. There’s a gentle knock on your door and you whisper “Come in” before you see the tall frame of your comfort and solitary make his way through the door and over to you on the bed. As the bed dips, you crawl over to his lap and his arms immediately wrap themselves around you, gentle, soothing.

“My sweet Pen” he breathes against your forehead as he presses a kiss to your forehead and you can’t help but run your hands along every available inch of his body that you can reach, remembering the nightmare that you’d woken from. He stills your hands, gently holding them in his grip and placing a gentle kiss on each of them as he looks down at your face and asks

“Nightmare?” a strangled sob escaping from your lips as you manage to nod your head in agreement.

“What was it Pen? Was it your mum? The kids?” he asks and you shake your head finally looking up to meet his gaze as you whisper

“You” and you feel him pull you closer to him, a gentle kiss placed on the top of your head as he begins to lay down, and you snuggle even closer. Not wanting to let him escape you for even the slightest amount of time.

“It’s okay Pen, I’m right here” he whispers to reassure you finally kissing you on the lips, a kiss you gladly accept and hum into. Eventually you manage to fall asleep in his arms safe and content knowing that he’s got you.

post-relapse penelope’s hands: a study in stellar acting

because season four premieres tonight, it was time for me to finish this set i had in my drafts!! justina machado deserves all the emmys for her work as penelope alvarez and that’s true for lots of reasons, but i’m particularly obsessed with her body language in these scenes and how much you learn from it that she never has to say out loud.  

for starters, this is the most physically restrained and even awkward we’ve ever seen penelope be around schneider. throughout the entire show, she’s a very open person, free with affection and casual reaching out. in their very first scene together, she reaches out and pats his hand after she teases him, and she greets him at her dinner table by tapping his shoulders as she walks by, two episodes later. even before she considers him her best friend, she’s comfortable around him.

but thanks to her past with victor, she’s more than aware how volatile addicts can be, and also…schneider lied to her face. more than once. he was drinking while he was around her family, her kids. it’s not clear in the episode if she knows that he shoved alex, but either way, trust has been broken.

so much happens between the dialogue in these scenes when you narrow your focus to penelope. she watches in complete silence while the family rallies around him. she shifts out of the way when he walks past her. when he’s so close his shadow’s blocking the light, she can’t even look at him. there’s something deeply unsettling about watching resident badass penelope alvarez fix her eyes on the floor, making herself just a tiny bit smaller. 

she’s been through all this before. and even though lydia knows schneider well enough to check his pockets and alex was smart enough not to leave him in the laundry room...it’s probably penelope who’s most vividly reliving the times with victor when he seemed bad-but-not-that-bad, when he swore he saw the light now and was gonna get it together. she knows that schneider’s words to the family come too easily, that his first reaction to getting caught was to try to move the process of reconciliation along so he could go back to drinking in secret. 

i wonder if she had already planned to confront him alone, as soon as he disappeared from his apartment, or if she realized she was going to have to while she was standing there watching the others comfort and forgive him.

knowing how ��reactive’ she can be, i can only imagine how hard it was for her to hold her tongue until she got everyone else out of the apartment. all that energy and emotion she’s keeping a tight grip on comes out in the shuffling of her feet as he passes between her and alex and the wringing of her hands while she waits to confront him.

that’s the only time when penelope lets herself go for a second--when she spins around, family safely away from the house, and makes it clear that she thinks he’s still downplaying what’s been going on. in that moment she’s gesturing as she talks, she’s letting herself show all the feelings she’s been holding back. 

but then when it’s schneider’s turn to talk? she pulls back again. this is the part that really kills me...her hands during his side of the conversation. schneider tells her what he was thinking when his relapse began, and you can watch her uncertainty, her hands going to her pockets and then moving away. he physically removes the symbol of his inclusion in her family from the hallway, and she pulls her hands from from where they were secured as she follows him, worried--but she doesn’t reach out to him.

in fact, the whole time they talk before sitting on the couch, she’s got her hands in her pockets or pressed flat against her jeans. which is unusual for her, and seems deliberate. she reached out for him after her anxiety attack, holding on while he hugged her, and she reached out to hold his hand while she talked to him about his father. reaching out for him that way is a different level of intimacy than they had in the first two seasons.

now, at this point in their relationship, it’s harder to hold back from him than it is to reach out. but she does, even while she listens to schneider explain and beat himself up. it’s only after he explains why he removed the chip, after he makes it clear he understands that the trust between them is broken–and he explains why it matters so much that he had earned that trust in the first place–that penelope physically relaxes a little.

she bends enough to tell him he hasn’t lost her family forever, that he can work to get what they had back, and they sit on the couch. now, she’s finally able to be close to him again, the way they usually are, without any real need for personal space. though she still keeps her hands pressed against her lap. 

when penelope finally does reach out, it’s to add emphasis to her insistence that he’s not alone, and that she believes in him. it’s an offering, rather than the kind of forgiveness the others gave him. 

the hug that follows is important to me because it’s the first time we’ve seen penelope be the safe harbor for schneider that he always is for her...but the gentle way she touches his neck is more important because it’s the first time she’s touched him at all since she found out about his relapse. it’s proof that she means what she says...that all hope is not lost. 

and that’s when schneider leans against her for the hug. accepting the offer. they’re having an entire wordless second conversation underneath the one they’re also having out loud, and as an autistic person to whom nonverbal communication doesn’t come naturally, watching the actors portray that so well is just amazing. 

‘you really fucked up,’ she tells him with that single touch, ‘but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve us anymore. keep trying. i’m here.’
