Song Review: The Sam Grisman Project - “Peggy-O” (Live)
Electric guitar belongs in bluegrass.
But don’t take Sound Bites’ word for it. Just asked the Sam Grisman Project - a band that plays traditional bluegrass in a decidedly non-traditional way.
There’s percussion to go with that electric axe. Double bass, violin and acoustic guitar, too.
And mandolin - two of them, actually.
The band performed “Peggy-O” at the 2022 Green Mountain Bluegrass festival and that nine-minute extravaganza is an aural feast. Slow to unfold, it features sparkly harmonies; acoustic guitar and fiddle showcases; a mandolin duet; and a slide-guitar solo tender enough to nestle itself inside its acoustic counterparts as it makes a place for amplification in an unplugged music.
As the son of David Grisman, the titular bandleader probably needs to be better than others to succeed in making music such as this. “Peggy-O” suggests - strongly - that he and his mates are just that.

Remember when Matt Weiner got so uptight about Mad Men spoilers that every episode promo in the later years was just:
"on the next Mad Men"
Don: *stares pensively*
Peggy: *looks thoughtful*
Pete: *closes a door*
Don (to no one): are you sure about that?
Roger: *lights a cigarette*
Joan: *frowns contemplatively*
Don: *stares pensively but in a different room*

I said this in tags on another post, but it’s relevant and deserves its own post (I should be reading my usual pre- sleeping fic selection, BUT! I had this revelation -being sleepy is useful once again! -)
They NEEDED Steve to disappear, to be gone. To never care about Bucky anymore. That way they could treat Bucky as they see fit, and that means treating him like shit.
Steve would NEVER accept or allow Bucky to make amends, he would NEVER let the government take care of Bucky or be part of his “rehabilitation” in any way shape or form. That’s why he became Nomad, that’s why Bucky stayed in Wakanda. He would had fight with teeth and nails for Bucky.
“He died already more than once! He was a victim! A prisoner of war. He saved the fucking universe. What the fuck do you mean with amends!”
He became a wanted criminal for that same reason, to not let them have Bucky (nor other people in a fucking watchlist)
They needed Steves relationship with Bucky to become bitter, to be nothing more than a memory.
Steve being in retirement wouldn’t have cut it and…
Bucky was always going to follow Steve, no matter what.
So they needed him to stay alone (or with a companion that didn’t really care as much as Steve, enter Sam)
This way they killed two birds with one stone in Endgame: Reinforcing Steves “love” for Peggy, because “he’s NOT gay, you guys!”, and the partial isolation of Bucky.

thinking about how Lady & the Tramp is all about the loyalty of love
Who better to teach that lesson than a pair of dogs?
Lady’s character looks like a naive young woman who’s always stayed in her place in society. Tramp’s character looks like a rough-and-tumble, “live a little” bachelor of the world.
But because they’re dogs, they get to tell us something about how staying in your place is the best thing to do; as long as your place is centered around love, you should be loyal to it.
Tramp jumps from girl to girl in the name of freedom.
Tumblr media
To him, breaking the rules and living for himself, taking advantage of everyone he needs to, is freedom. The whole world is his. But when he’s faced with a choice between the whole world or the love of one sheltered girl, he realizes that loyalty to that love is better than the whole world.
Why?
Because Lady teaches him. She seems like the naive one, the one who needs looking out for, but she’s actually got the most important thing figured out—she’s all about staying loyal to those you love.
Even before she starts her romance with the Tramp. When her place in the home is jeopardized, does she get jealous of the baby? Does shy try to fight for her place in her owner’s hearts? No. With their help, she just makes room in her own heart to include the baby, too. She shifts her own position in order to stay true to her people.
Tumblr media
Tramp’s never learned that people can make room in their hearts before. He thinks people only have a limited amount of space in there. But you can tell that he believes the same thing about dogs, not just humans—he, himself, keeps bouncing from place to place and girlfriend to girlfriend because he’s afraid his own place in their hearts is temporary.
Tumblr media
That’s why he tries to impress his worldview on Lady. He’s trying to warn her. But he’s wrong, and she proves him wrong by making room in her heart for the baby, the new element, the one that looked like it was crowding her out.
When she’s at her lowest point and has been mistreated by Aunt Sarah, with no knowledge of when Jim Dear and Darling will come back, and has fallen in love with the Tramp, he tries to convince her to leave them for good. After all, he just heard how insecure the human baby was making her when they first met.
But Lady’s response is, “it sounds wonderful. But who would watch over the baby?”
Tumblr media
So Tramp gets to see that she’s different than the other girl-dogs. She’s different than anyone he’s ever known. She has all the potential to be like him (he saw a glimpse of it when she helped him con the beaver, and started falling for her) but she won’t. She’ll stay loyal to what she loves—even when what she loves is hard, and at one point made her feel like she was losing her place.
Of course, then she gets taken to the pound and learns that he is the opposite of her—he’s like, anti-dog. He has no clue how to be loyal. He’s never been loyal, not even to dogs. He’s had all these other girls!
Tumblr media
So that throws a wrench in everything, because he’s changed. He’s ready to “settle down” like the pound dogs predicted. He sees that to have love worthy of being loyal to is all the world he’ll ever need. Lady’s a dog’s dog, capable of endless sacrifice to stay loyal to her family, and he wants to be a part of it. But you know, everything gets screwed up.
And you can tell he’s changed, and learned from her example, and really believes in loyal, selfless love because even after she’s rejected him he comes back. As soon as she needs help, he finds a way into the house—which to him would have been like breaking into a prison before — and gets himself hurt helping a baby he doesn’t even know. Lands himself in the pound. Sacrifices himself and his precious freedom because loyal love is better than empty freedom.
But then Lady saves him. Because she’s loyal. She could’ve remembered that he’s a triple-timing jerk. She could’ve considered how much trouble he got her into. She could’ve even said to herself “they’re taking him to the pound, the single most terrifying location I’ve ever been to, and my family is here, so goodbye Tramp.” But she doesn’t do that. She leads the family to the rat, then to Tramp himself.
Tumblr media
So even though Tramp is the world-wise one, it’s Lady who teaches him the most fulfilling place for a dog; loyal love. And it’s way way better than “a big hunk of world with no fence around it, all ours, nothing but the best.”
Which is why dogs are such a great choice of character to teach that lesson. Because they really are at their happiest and most fulfilled when they’re loving others, even if, in our minds, the happiest and most fulfilled beings would be those that are free.
Disney should go back to making ‘em like they used to.

Bucky was second in command for the Commandos therefore should've planned strategy with SSR as much as Steve. yet there's zero indication that the SSR personales knew Bucky well enough to even call him by his name??
Peggy has never addressed Bucky directly, even after his death Peggy used 'your friend' in her conversation with Steve. that's, if not avoidance out of jealousy of his relationship with Steve, detachment. there's no personal relationship between Bucky and her. plus Howard Stark calling him 'sergeant Barnes' which literally couldn't have been more impersonal.
the only logical conclusion is that the Commandos never spent time socializing with Peggy and Stark, they probably didn't even meet all that often cuz they were going around Europe fighting Hydra while SSR stayed behind doing their own stuff. Then how can Peggy possibly be the person Steve couldn't get over with, let along have any long lasting impact on him when they've barely spent time together?
popcorn movies are thoughtless and get criticized for this precise reason. the plot doesn't have to be properly developed bc audiences are conditioned to think certain ways and they complete the story in their head for the movie. 'oh that's a classic setup for romance, of course the hero falls in love with her.'
the thing is, it doesn't make sense, and when it doesn't, it shouldn't.
steggy is what happens when you let this thoughtlessness dictates how you percee a trope in a movie.
she never should've been the 'love of my life' for Steve. she simply couldn't have been. THEY BARELY KNEW EACH OTHER ffs.

Song Review(s): Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros feat. the Wolfpack with Rick Mitarotonda - “Jack Straw,” “New Minglewood Blues,” “Peggy-O” and” Me and My Uncle” (Live, Feb. 10, 2023)
Bob Weir is a chameleon in wolves’ clothing.
The Dead man was the ultimate changeling across a four-song giveaway from his Jan. 11 stream/gig in New York.
It began with Weir leading the 10-player-strong Wolf Bros and ’Pack through “Jack Straw.” Nicely arranged for strings and brass and with a full head of steam on the outro, it succeeded despite Jay Lane’s atonal attempt at singing Jerry Garcia’s lines and providing backgrounds.
Stripped down to the five core Bros, “New Minglewood Blues” found Weir still experimenting, after 28 post-Grateful years, with how to phrase the lyrics over a turgid tempo. Jeff Chimenti’s electric-piano break salvaged it from the rubbish pile, but it was fairly bleak.
youtube
Later, Weir and Goose’s Rick Mitarotonda traded verses on a clumsy “Peggy-O,” rendered fumbling-and-stumbling, acoustic-duo style.
And then, with Chimenti, Lane, bassist Don Was and pedal steeler Barry Sless back on stage, Weir and his young gosling plugged in for a bouncy, uptempo telling of the “Me and My Uncle” saga. With verses split and the aural spotlight shared, it was a reminder that expectations based on song titles are folly where Weir’s concerned.

June 1st is Don Draper's Birthday! This year, celebrate by cheating on your wife who you never really loved. In your mind, she's just the idea of a person you think that a person like you would love. Are you even capable of real love or does the endless labor of maintaining the façade of your idealized masculine identity prevent that?
Either way, go yell at Peggy.

June Christy's "Something Cool:" A Definitive Album of Cool Jazz Vocalism
Introduction: June Christy’s “Something Cool” stands as a seminal album in vocal jazz history, not just for its groundbreaking approach but for the lasting impact it had on the “cool” jazz movement. Originally released as a 10-inch LP in 1954 and later expanded to a 12-inch LP in 1955, “Something Cool” is considered by many to be a masterpiece of modern jazz vocalism, combining June Christy’s…

This is where I normally do the "F2U with credit but don't claim ownership" part but I'm not too fussed with these ones since they're all game assets. Check out Melissa Pohl's work on UI development for the game, which even though was changed a bit since she left the project still had her fingerprints all over it. Her work is cool as hell
