Didn't want to derail this post too much bc funny posts should be allowed to stay that way, but I really think OP is onto something here tbh!!! Malls (in usamerica) are full of high end brands and luxury items. No one goes to a mall because they NEED what's there. Malls are dying precisely because there's no place in a big mall for basic quality-of-life shit. The thing about blacksmiths and alehouses and apothecaries and peddlers is that they all existed to meet real, practical needs. They brought people into town for a reason, and then if those people bought a little treat while they were there, or stopped and chatted with someone, or had another little human experience, that was all an added bonus.
In Central Florida, the two major malls are sprawling expanses of Armani and Gucci boutiques, high end clothing and dining experiences. The Florida Mall has a straight up brick-and-mortar Tesla store in the middle of it (that I've never seen anyone go inside). There's no room for little human experiences. If you have to go, you're not exploring. You get the rare item you need and get out. Malls are labyrinths of globalized corporate excess, and in the world those same corporations have built, no one can afford to be excessive anymore. Malls are starving because there's no longer a comfortable middle class upon which they may glut themselves.
A positive alternative to this is a revived mall by my house: its department stores are shuttered (the corpse of a JC Penny WILL be possessed by Spirit Halloween this month), the cinema hangs on by airing international films and special events, and the storefronts that were once chain shops and the same textureless, featureless shopping mall fare have been replaced by local small businesses. There's a vintage consignment shop and a board game store that holds weekly community gaming events. A gutted sears has become a brewery and arcade (an alehouse?). BUT there's also a small grocery corner store (a peddler?). There's a daycare. There are maintenance and construction firms (blacksmiths?). There's a music school. There's a drug store (an apothecary?). The mall itself hosts walking events and parties and scavenger hunts that encourage people to come in and wander and engage with their community.
So yeah I think OP is hitting up on something real here. People who come for quality of life shit will stay and start finding each other. The way to make malls live again is to allow them to grow what feels real and right, instead of forcing them to seed this hollow, homogenized isolation.

I ponder about death quite often
My friends, my family, my pets even those I am not close with anymore and whom I was never close with.
It hits me like a strong wind some days.
When I’m working
When I’m lying in bed
When I’m walking outside
When I am with the people I fear to lose.
I often think about my dad. How most of the time I worry if he will become sick again.
Once we were walking through the giant peddlers mall in our city. I had a new fondness for teapots and took pictures of every one I saw. He noticed this and helped me point them out.
It was his birthday and we spent hours looking for every tea pot we could find.
For Christmas he got me a blue tea pot with red and yellow flowers.
It is now the most valuable item in my tiny apartment.
Now I associate every tea put with my father.
-
-
-
-
-
-
I want to tell him how much he means to me, or rather how much I wish he meant to me.
He never taught me how a man should love me
How a man should treat me
And how a man should make me feel.
Instead he showed me the opposite.
I hate him everyday for that.
And even through all of the pain and heartache he caused me,
I’m terrified of him leaving.
It’s foolish honestly
To still look to him for guidance and think of him as my savior
But he is not.
I stand in front of him feeling so small
Wishing he would hold me like he did when I was six.
Wishing we could make a sculpture together like the big pink barbie dream house we built.
I’m silently crying out to him wishing, hoping he would see me,
But he can’t see in the dark.
I search for him in the dark wanting to understand why we’re both here, to ask him why we are here.
I think back on the teapot, how important it meant to me.
Every night I make my tea in this very pot before I go to sleep.
Pretending the blue tea pot with red and yellow flowers is him.
Giving me warmth and comfort, rocking me to sleep.
He is my dad.
I may not understand why I have this immense amount of love and admiration for him,
But I will continue to search through the dark.

Nightlife in Chandigarh - A Surprise I was not Expecting
Contrary to what a lot of people might tell you, Chandigarh has a very happening nightlife. You are not going to see traffic jams or long lines of vehicles outside in the name of being happening and "up and about" at night. The nightlife here is usually found in enclosed spaces such as malls, discos, lounges, resto-bars, nightclubs, and even some of the most popular family restaurants that are open till later after midnight.
They have the most awesome music and the hottest crowd imaginable. I am going to List 3 things that make Chandigarh nightlife absolutely unique and something that you should look forward to the next time you pay a visit to the City Beautiful:
Tumblr media
Source: unsplash.com
The Music is to Die For
You might think that it has a strong Punjabi or North Indian influence. This is true but the people of this city like to stay updated. You will find options such as the Playboy Club Chandigarh, Ministry of Bar Exchange, Peddlers, and many others to be quite upbeat. You don't just get the most popular Bollywood and Punjabi hit numbers in their nightclubs but also the hottest and the latest international hits.
The Cuisine is Out of This World
There is something to please every taste bud in the many clubs and discos of Chandigarh. Moving beyond the usual beg and non-veg debate, you are going to fall in love with Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Indo-Chinese, Lebanese, and every Continental dish that you get in these places. And do not forget to try their in-house custom mocktails.
Everything is on Time And Well-Guarded
There is no deviation from the time window that the club has been assigned. The authorities and the local law enforcement are very particular about all these rules and regulations. This makes it a lot safer for women and children alike. Regardless of whether you are coming out of a club or a late-night family restaurant, you feel 100% secure.
In the end, you'll notice that in other cities, you find people roaming around or creating a nuisance, or perhaps indulging in some kind of nonsensical activity. But Chandigarh is different and so is its nightlife.

We just finished a Saturday night dinner by this odd open mall place, Molito, and are currently heading down to the edges of the roads. My earphones are playing Peddler by Lunar Vacation and it honestly sets the mood as a randomly shuffled song. The singer talks about feeling down, falling down, and more as the lights from across the road shine with a warm tinted yellow shine. There are nothing in my thoughts, other than the little things, like this dude with vibrant green hair and a denim jacket that walked across giving me a deadpan stare; rude but fair. I'd react the same if I saw someone with a black supreme shirt, shorts and half-shaven legs, and some book bag thats accompanied with a vibrant pink book awkwardly tucked in the palm of their right hand. Not my best look, or desired look. Not even a look I wanted to wear.
We wander under the arch of that place, across the road enveloped in yellow lights, and stand idly. A bit stupidly may I add, looking as if we’ve been struck dumbfounded.
“Where… do we go..-“   “I dunno” I’d say if I actually wasn’t mute at every chance I’d get.
“Maybe we can just stay right here by the front?”
Good idea, though it does defeat the purpose of the few tables that were empty infront of us. I get it though – or maybe not – that watching strangers or even being nearby them in a compact setting is a bit intrusive, just being next to their business when there wasn't anyone there a second before, especially for us wandering until we’d leave a minute later. It just feels a bit rude, even when we’d form a judgement before deciding it was.
Bap.
“Watch your head dude, you’re a bit too tall to not watch it.” Someone remarks as I bump my head at the soft side of an umbrella, tilting it a bit as a result. A lady in dress pants that are pitch black, and a vibrant pink top that defies the laws of light and shadows, stares at me when that happens, and lightly giggles from a bit away.
“looks like a lipstick” I say internally, again, to not be rude or incidentally strike up a 10 minute conversation that would end in awkward silence. There are plenty of interesting people out tonight now that I’ve witnessed the lipstick lady though. There’s this kid in a waldo outfit thats hoping around the fences of a wheelchair ramp pretty stupidly; there are ( Possibly, but likely with the hand-holding. Not seriously assuming though. ) two dudes on a date by the front chairs of this open ice cream café.
I still don’t get the open-everything plan that this place has but I appreciate it. There are surprisingly a few tourists here that I have no clue on why they’d be in a local’s area; people suddenly joining the small band upfront; and lastly, the other half of the group that catches up to us where we stand.
“You guys enjoying the music?”
“Yeah! Though is everyone here?”
“I think so-“
Their voices drown out in my ear. Willingly of course, not by the now medium-sized band that has a midi keyboard reminiscent of something Vulfpeck would use. Everything from here on out becomes a blur since i never really wanted to be here. I was more of a requirement than an option to bring. We get candy apples on our way out, they gawk at sports cars I don't even bother about, and suddenly we are driving.
"So, ------, what job you want when you grow up?"
I hate this question. Mostly because its the only question or thing they ever ask me, including school applications, and whatever scam they found and fell for this time. I didn't hear them clearly though as i was already drowning my ears in the 3rd album I could find in my library.
"Uh. for what?"
"For-" she pauses, before laughing hysterically. Then everyone follows after.
Even with earphones that could mute out static silence without music playing, I could hear them, and probably everyone outside too. "Oh I'm sorry, i have everything already. I'm contented as- as rich. A job for what-?" She's clearly drunk, swaying in the motion of the car when she makes this notation, but she further amplifies the laughter.
There are bright warm lights passing us by, running away from this moment - from here - atleast from this perspective. What does she count as rich? the obvious is money-rich, but I wonder if she ever considers life-rich. Does that make sense? cause it doesn't, no matter how many times I try to reformat this seemingly intangible thought. I'd just rather be content at my lowest, than riddled with problems at the highest i could reach; if I could be numerically rich. I'll finish that thought after one more bit of rest.

Indian Photo Studio
Ketaki Sheth visited around 65 photo studios while travelling throughout India between 2015 and 2018, the many of which were in a dismal state of collapse. Numerous photographers have travelled to and written in-depth articles about photo studios in India. Sheth's method of working at the picture studios is anything from conventional because she frequently flouted the rigid rules of taking stiff, mannered images of people with enigmatic looks. Instead, she exhumed legends of former glory and focused viewers' attention on objects and a cast of characters who gracefully submitted to her gaze while using one handheld camera and lens and outdated studio lights when available.

In my current studio praxis, I'm using the exact same methodology that is used in a traditional Indian photo studio. Sheth's photo studio helped me study the lighting styles and also led me to actually find a backdrop maker in Delhi who made a backdrop for me. Christopher Pinney states that these studio backdrops have long been used as imaginative settings for fantasies, goals, and longings throughout their comparatively brief cultural history. It has both established and upheld graphical conventions while also defying them.
In my understanding the backdrop is first and foremost a location for the exchange of technical expertise, desires and social customs. Whether it takes the form of a fancy 19th-century attic studio, a characterless shopping mall cubicle, a temporary setup in a student admission office, or the portable backdrop of a street peddler portraitist much like Henri Cartier-Bresson's image 'Street Photographer', it is either a replica of current societal norms and traditions or a short-term haven from them, depending on the wish. Even though it is a rapidly declining practice, the sociability and ceremonial character of vintage photographer's studio background traditions seem to have a certain allure even today.

Some interesting finds at the Peddler’s Antique Mall in Greenbrier, AR
1) some dolls/mannequins that are probably haunted
2) two large stuffed Tasmanian Devils
3) someone had a very pink kitchen
4) can’t tell if this guy is a friend or cursed. Or maybe both!
5) Who is she? 😮
6-7) an extremely badass chair
8) a cool looking bird cage (that’s too small to be housing actual birds, but would look awesome as just a display piece)
9) an antique calendar
10) a cool looking magnifying glass that I was tempted to get

I want to create one of those super vulnerable and heavy but simple pieces of poetry or comics or quotes or whatever that have you like “oof that really Speaks to my Fear and Desire of Experiencing Love” but the vulnerable stuff dredged from the center of my psyche isn’t clear and revelatory like moonlight or crisp and nourishing like biting into a peach it’s more like a hand turkey drawn by a kid named Owen that you find behind your fridge in your new house or like a sequel to over the hedge that doesn’t exist or a bad painting of a shed being sold for 12 dollars at the back of a peddlers mall

THE #VIBE AT THE PEDDLER’S MALL
It seems like the Peddler’s Mall in Lexington has really changed their #Vibe in the past month or so.. What’s up with that? Word on the street is.. there’s new management and even a couple vendors I spoke too could feel it.
“Something’s really changed here, man..” says an Anonymous Vendor with good hair.
“It’s like, the new girls can’t even count money..” replied a regular customer.
Needless to say, something is up and it’s definitely not the prices. Go down the Peddler’s Mall in Lexington off of E New Circle and see if the #Vibe is off to you. Maybe I’m crazy???
Comment below if ya find any good “Treasures”.

ITS CLEO TIME!! pt 1

thanks to @madam-melon-meow for asking for more pics, I just love photographing my queen :)

Og versus reboot
first thing I noticed is that the originals were quite diverse i their outfits and colors pallettes, it all still made sense to her style and character yes one Cleo is wearing an outfit that isn't hers, I got her at a peddlers mall. from what I have of the reboot and what I've seen, its kind of hit or miss.
Some of the reboot outfits matched the theme she was given, but don't seem to match Cleo. I dont think ive ever said this but its no secret that the Electrified Cleo is my absolute least favorite. They did her so incredibly dirty. Actually they did all of them dirty, why the hell did they bring back crimped hair!?!?
but back to the clothes really quick, a good chunk of the og outfits had a bandage motif to it or added bandage bits to the overall look. None of the reboot dolls have that. Yes they have the molded bandages on her arm and leg (which i actually like, I think its a neat little detail) but it feels like an after thought, just left out. Shes a mummy!! Its apart of her you can't just leave it out!! Otherwise she looks like a very fashionable normie.
theres also the fact that og Cleos outfits had a lot of detail and were normally multiple pieces to create the look. Reboot ones are like maybe two pieces if that. Yea some og ones were just a dress but at least it looked good and felt right for her.
back to the hair: the quality of the hair also went down significantly. The reboot hair feels cheap and much more plastic-y and never wants to lay how i want it, I mean you can see that some of the bangs are messed up. I mean the originals weren't always the greatest, but overall I never had too much issue aside from some tinsel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in regards to the face ups, holy heck it was so easy to tell what Cleo was what just by her eyeshadow!! there is so little difference in the reboot faces. Its really only the hair that gives it away. I do enjoy her reboot face somewhat tho, its cute but also Cleo is 5,000+ yrs old and in the reboot she looks like a child, I mean her eyes are so much larger too its almost a little off-putting. I much prefer the more mature looks of the originals. It gave her a more serious im-in-charge kinda vibe.
Also all the lip colors are practically the same. I mean you gotta match it to the outfit and that doesn't seem to be what happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really quick umm I love the og outfit, its probably my fav but the og doll herself was uhh well... the re-release they did it my fav hands down. There was a time I brushed her hair religiously every day bc I was just so obsessed with her which also speaks to the quality. Its so soft and lays how I want it to this day and I've been carrying her around (yes sometimes she just lived in my bag) for years and she still looks good. The re-release outfit is lacking some minor details but nothing too serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Og Cleo versus reboot og Cleo. I gotta say, I kinda like it but it will never be anywhere near as iconic as her og outfit. Like nothing can top that tbh.
The details and colors are nice, but it doesn't feel her. Again its that feeling of aging her down and thats reflected in the color choices, not to mention the random pattern choices. That shirt with those pants? Og Cleo would eat you alive. The earrings slap tho, I want those.
You can also tell that the reboot Cleos are a lot more orange. I think they were trying to make her darker and failed in that respect.
Didn't know where to add this but also reboot accessories were seriously lacking in details. Like a lot of modern barbie stuff, its just a chunk of plastic that might have a neat pattern or design but it gets lost bc its just the one color. Also nearly all her shoes were just gold, like I get it but come on aside from the reboot og those were... a choice. quick note, one of the reboot Cleos isn't wearing her shoes which are my favs actually bc the heels are cats. That was the best thing to come from the reboot hands down, like I actually bought the doll just for her shoes. I'll see if I can find them for pt2.
I cant add anymore images, but I did want to talk about a few more things lol this is just an off the top of my head kinda info so consider this part one of two as the title says :)

The duos “home life”
The duo have a very unique way of living. Izu found a place that was closed down due to a gas leak a little after deciding that he couldn't stay at home anymore, he did a lot of tests and decided that the owners had simply decided not to reopen because of the structural Integrity, He was able to find quite a few places that were stable enough to live at, though the rooms needed to be connected because the places between were not as stable.
When Shinso moved in the place had a lift that was made with debris, makeshift platforms that were between closer platforms and things closer to zip lines for the larger distances (all of these were only for if there wasn't a fast stable path). The platforms were living room/kitchen, 2 bedrooms, "hospital", and the garden. There was a bathroom in a nearby shop. The living room was a couch, table, lots of cabinets, pillows, and a fireplace (they had a way to make the smoke slowly dissipate, Shinso was the one who pointed out the importance of this). The bedrooms were for the most part used as just a place to keep a few personal belongings and act as a place to go to when they needed to be alone, they normally slept on the couch and most of there stuff was kept in the living room anyway, including the power supply. The hospital area is simply a very very clean area that is completely disinfected for treating injuries. Lastly there is the Gardens, its pretty self explanatory, all unused water goes there and its their main food source. They also keep anything they decide is important in here. the place was built with debris, things that people didn't take when the gas leak first was found, and scraps from the beach. It was nowhere near safe, but they wouldn't die from it and it was better than any alternatives. They also had a workshop of sorts on the scrap beach, both because of how well hidden it is and the convenience of working right next to where they get their materials
how is the duo funded? well since vigilantism doesn't pay, the two took towards repair work. Izu loves to fix watches and metals while Shin prefers leather and wood. the two would go to thrift stores, peddlers malls, or the scrap piles and take any piece they find interesting to the workshop (a different section than where they make stuff)and making them working and look nice. After that they take them to a trusted pawn shop and sell the pieces. it got to the point the shop gives them some projects as well.
