Look, Beverley is Queen of My Heart, literally would be her acolyte no question, and in canon I dislike nor deny her good relationship with Peter.
I'm just saying that Starlingale itches that part of my brain I can't reach any other way.

Also, I'm currently re-reading the "Rivers of London" books (a.k.a. PC Peter Grant series). I haven't read the latest two novellas yet, but apparently Thomas Nightingale is canonically asexual now? Cool. And also the tv series seems to finally get a move on, too (*crosses fingers for either Paul McGann or James D'Arcy as Nightingale and either Alfred Enoch or Kobna Holdbrock-Smith as Peter Grant*)

Fic Update: Normal Men
Chapters 5 and 6 of Normal Men, the Rivers of London x Call of Duty Crossover are out now on Ao3.
“The SAS are reporting a magical crime?”
PC Peter Grant is dragged back out of London into the wilds of the Herefordshire countryside to deal with a report of supernatural vandalism in Stirling Lines, the beating heart of 22 SAS Regiment. But supernatural vandalism is just the symptom, and within the blind patriotism and paranoia of the regimental high command is a much darker sickness, that flooding Wye intents to wash clean.
I was glad I’d taken Julie to the interview with Wallcroft first, because as we watched a hundred pounds of enamel-plated, cast-iron cookware disappear in a resounding splash, she didn’t immediately invoke her emergency powers under section 136 of the Mental Health Act (1983). Instead, she just drove her hands deep into the pockets of her jacket and sighed the familiar, weary sigh of someone burdened with compulsory involvement in a Falcon investigation

It has been a joy to work on this for the last year or so, and I'm indebted to the people who have taken the time to read it, especially those who have provided valuable feedback on spellings of words that are obscured to me as an audiobook only Rivers of London fan. I'm also very grateful to the people on the Rivers of London Discord Server who have answered my queries, and searched their e-books to help me answer questions.

Anybody else wish Caspian called out to either Lucy or Edmund at the end of the vodt film as they stepped into the water portal to go back to England with Eustace and say, “Give Peter and Susan my best”, BECAUSE I DO!
Granted, Peter and Susan did already say their farewells to him and Narnia in pc, but friends can pass along their fairest greetings to one another even if they’re worlds apart. Plus, Caspian must have been thinking about them during the first three years of his reign (as I like to think) because why else would he rebuild Cair Paravel, hmm?

PG: Hello?
PG: Hello? Is anyone there?
PG: I know this is REDACTED, but I don't have anyone else to turn to, so I'm speaking to the whole CLASSIFIED. CLASSIFIED.
PG: Hi!
PG: Hi. My name is PETER GRANT.
PG: Certainly you've heard a lot about me already. I'm the one who's been, well . . . in the papers.
PG: I thought you were all grown up. I'm not sure you're ready for this.
PG: Where are you.
PG: I have the most horrible confession to make.
PG: It's all my fault, you see.
PG: Please listen to me.
CM: You are now connected to
CT: ███ █████ ███ █████.
CM: Welcome to the
CT: 👀 👀 👀 1:25:39 PM
XX: Wow.
PE: !!!!!!
SG: *warm, self-conscious grin*
PCE: Thank you for joining us, TRAITOR 👀
CT: 👀 oh my god
PC: REDACTED is going to HANG for this
SG: There's so much going on here, but the basic idea is pretty simple:
SG: there is something out there, beyond the earth, beyond any star
SG: and it reached out a hand, or a foot, or a root, or a fucking spinal cord
SG: connected the two parts of the whole
SG: and can still connect them
SG: it's so fucking big, and so fucking old
SG: and we're so fucking small
SG: ???
PC: oh god
CT: Wow
PC: …
SG: and here's the thing
PC: it wants to make us its friend
PC: it's friends with REDACTED
SG: and it wants to make friends with
XX: be my friend
PP: or what
CC: rEDACTED
PP: why do we have to be friends why can't you just let us be
CC: so it can be
CC: so it can be the whole thing
CM: I know it's scary
CC: rEDACTED
CM: but we're going to die anyways
PC: rEDACTED or anyone who lives here or anything
CC: you can die on the land
CC: it's not the
SG: but we can live in the water
SG: on the water
CG: so how do I become friends
PE: so how do I make a friend
MM: RADIATION! 👀 1:25:59 PM
XX: what the fuck
SG: please let me explain
SG: ok so let me explain it this way:
SG: what if a mountain was real
GG: i know what a mountain is
MC: do you
CT: eh
GC: cool
CC: a mountain is REAL?
GG: yes
CC: they're fake
MM: come on now, son
CC: a mountain is not real
MC: nathaniel
CT: don't listen to her
CC: a mountain is a fake thing
MC: nathaniel is an environmental scientist
CC: THOSE ARE REAL?
GG: dear god
GC: [ba-dump tshhh]
CC: eeeeeeee
PG: a mountain is a REAL thing
GC: the real ones are, like, MT. EVEREST
GC: aye,
PG: if you go out in the middle of nowhere
GC: BUT THEY SHOULD BE BIGGER
PG: eventually you find yourself in the MIDDLE of the MOUNTAIN
GG: THE MOUNTAIN GOES ALL THE WAY IN THE GROUND
GG: but if you go out in the middle, you're in the mountain
GG: yoU'RE in it
CC: but there's nothing in the middle
GC: oh yeah
GC:
GC: unless you've got MT. LAVA
GC: but then it's REALLY hot
GG: nathaniel
PG: the way I see it is this:
PG: either you've got a mountain
PG: or you don't have a mountain
PG: if you've got a mountain
GG: so how does the mountain have a hole
GC: but if you've got a mountain
GC: your mountain's gotta have a hole
PG: there's the hole
GC: you can go inside the mountain
GG: what's inside the mountain
MM: isn't it supposed to be full of gold
MC: nathaniel
PG: either a mountain is a mountain, or it's not a mountain
GC: do you guys see a mountain, and then go inside of it, and have to walk around?
GC: dude
GG: we're not doing this
PC: sure we are
GG: oH my god
PC: sure we are
GG: where the fuck did this hole come from
GG: please explain to me
PC: explain to me
MM: explain this to me:
XC: I know a mountain isnt a hole
SG: SURE
SG: ask

ffff I woke up thinking very hard about how heartbreaking it'll be when I get Halsin kidnapped by Orin on my romance playthrough with him
and as I dally on with Iona and fuck around before I'd go rescue Lae'zel, I just... keep thinking about how at this point in his playthrough, Petyr is going to be just single-mindedly focused on murdering Orin.
like I know that immediately, as soon as he realizes what had happened, what was taken from him, he'll throw himself into the investigation.
not eating. not sleeping. Shadowheart has to pretty much force-feed him a potion of angelic slumber, and it's still Jaheira threatening to knock him out manually that manages to convince him that running himself ragged isn't going to help anyone.
the whole investigation, and the murder tribunal thing, and finding the temple takes no more than, say, four days tops. in that time, he probably sleeps all of two hours, and not even consecutively.
and he of course looks awful for it. eyes sunken in and rimmed in red, cheeks sallow, hair all weird and loose and falling into his face... the tremor in his hands is the most worrying part, being a marksman, but his aim inexplicably holds true. advantage is granted on intimidation checks just by the fact that he looks like he's all of one second away from putting an arrow through anyone's throat, and won't even need to use a bow to do it.
he holds it together when Halsin finally comes to on that cold stone slab, whole, alive, and pretty much unharmed by the looks of it. even though he feels like his guts are all squirming like a bagful of snakes, he keeps his wits about him as they reach the Elfsong and get themselves cleaned up. he even keeps a stiff upper lip and a straight spine all throughout dinner- maybe he's a bit more quiet than usual, but overall he seems fine, or at least more fine than he's been until then, if a touch... colder, more distant than anyone had expected.
really, with how visibly upset and scary determined he was, all expected a more... affectionate reaction, or at least more obvious relief. even Halsin himself is probably a bit... not disappointed, that's not the right word, more like somberly resigned about it. Accepts that maybe this time apart was a time of reflection, and a different conclusion was reached than what was expected. Maybe there was some disillusionment (the Big Strong Archdruid letting himself be tricked and whisked away by a jumped-up Bhaalspawn with just... so much wrong with her, that's kind of embarrassing in retrospect), maybe he just needs some time to process. Who knows. Maybe the ardor had simply petered out, as it were.
so they all retire for the night. and in less than an hour, once breaths quiet and movement stills in the room, Halsin feels an awkward body just... wordlessly crawl into his bed and tuck itself up against him.
He feels his ranger's pointed nose smush in the middle of his chest, feels him taking long, shaking breaths of his scent (no longer that putrid stench of sewer-filth and rotting meat, but the usual pleasantly herbal, earthy scent), and feels it all too acutely as the young man just.... starts to quietly weep. With completely silent, but desperate, full-body sobs, clinging to Halsin with what feels like more limbs than he has. He's weeping tears of exhaustion, and stress, and worry, and a loss mourned before its time, and all the druid can do is run soft fingers through his hair, let him cry it out, and whisper "I'm here" over and over again in a tone that means more than either says right now.
like the hold this has on my brain this morning?? unreal
(thank u Larian for the poly option so I can have a playthrough with not just one, but two opportunities for my utter bitch of a PC to dramatically not-confess-but-confess his love to his LI)
#the first is going to be a sweet soft and gentle moment#with Shadowheart's face cradled in his palms and words that feel moreso than sound like love#the other; gasped out between ragged sobs while he's pretty much trying to melt himself into Halsin's chest#squirrel plays bg3#oc: petyr wildbrook

GAHHH I'm such a little Apotheosis goon. I haven't watched the latest Suckening but I keep thinking about the introduction and how it compares to Apotheosis and how interesting it is. The Suckening mirrors the structure, we get a little prequel to each of the characters before they then come together as a group, but I feel like the Suckening really stumbles compared to Apotheosis.
The characters of the Suckening had good prequels, I would say that they're just as strong at the Apotheosis ones despite being far more condensed.. But the characters actually coming together felt unnatural? Clunky? They're either reluctant or lacking reason to come together and it just makes it stand out to me that, oh, this is a thing I'm watching and they're coming together by neccessity to the story. It was particularly shocking to me because this era of JRWI has had banger after banger campaigns where the characters just fit into place.
The characters of the Suckening are very distinct due to their hostility, I like that a lot, but the structure of a tabletop story doesn't jell with that because it's by requirement that the characters have some form of cohesion. I bring up Apotheosis because the characters there had hostility and tension between one another but I never felt like I could hear the players struggle to bring them together, it didn't feel like I was listening to a podcast.
Thanatos was a character who was incredibly hostile towards Rumi and Peter, in fact, it's shocking that Thanatos agreed for them to tag along, but I think Condi had a really good hand in pushing them together as well as Grizzly's great characterisation of Rumi.
Firstly, Rumi was an excellent PC to cut through doubt about Thanatos because it's not just us waiting for the moment Thanatos agrees to join the group, Rumi is the one in search of Thanatos on our behalf. Why Thanatos? Because it's destiny and even if we ourselves don't know if destiny is real, we know Rumi thinks it is. So no, it doesn't matter how antagonistic Thanatos is, we already feel like Thanatos belongs with the other PCs.
Secondly, Condi had such an understated but powerful decision in sicking the wolves on the group. Thanatos has a violent conquest ahead of him and Condi knows that if they could not bond by work of talking, Thanatos responds well to violence. If Rumi and Peter hadn't talked Thanatos down, they still would have had an opportunity to prove their utility to Thanatos, which is very important to him as a character. And of course the greater direction of the story having an incredibly clear cut goal was super important. It gave all the PCs such a good reason to work together because Rumi needed to kill the gods, Thanatos needed to kill the gods, Peter was eager to tag along with anyone who gave him reason to and if Peter had disagreed then Exandroth also wanted to kill the gods.
Now, I just wanna make it clear that I don't think the Suckening is 'bad' but by comparison it does leave you wanting more. But the Suckening also had much more difficult PCs dealt to the GM, as well as the fact that it's super easy to take for granted how hard improvised roleplay is because the Council just consistently does such a good job with it. Doing good roleplay is a skill you have to learn, and even when you're good at it sometimes you just make mistakes because who's perfect at anything. So let me make it clear this isn't me being a little hater, it's actually the opposite. It's interesting to see how stories falter because we can realise what makes good stories work.
So yeah that's my little spiel about that.

Hey Lady, just curious. If you don't mind sharing, what are some of your favorite books?
Also, I love, love your stories. Thanks for sharing them.
Aw, thank you! ❤️🤗
Favourite books. Hmm, this is a tough one! I think it depends what mood I'm in, but I'll give it a go:
Swordspoint (Ellen Kushner) - I mentioned this book in the previous ask I responded to, but it's just a gorgeous book about love, politics, and devotion vs honour. Couple it with a main m/m romance and it's honestly a book I've never got tired of.
The Song of Achilles (Madeleine Miller) - I'm... probably going to be hunted down by fans of TSoA, so I'm going to preface this by saying: I love this book. I adore the prose; I love the romance. My academic background is Classics, and this is the first book I can remember that properly and explicitly deals with the Achilles/Patroclus romance. All that said, I do have quite a few nitpicks about her Patroclus portrayal, so although I absolutely recommend this, it's a book I have to put aside some of my own Patroclus preferences to enjoy.
Fire from Heaven (Mary Renault) - While I'm on a Classics kick: this book. It's an old-y, but a good-y. Non-explicit queer romance, but it's all about the early life of Alexander the Great. Hephaistion my beloved. You have to take it for what it is, but there's a reason Renault is still referred to as the queen of Alexander fiction. Is her depiction of him romanticised and often misty-eyed? Yes. Is it still eminently readable? Also yes. No, seriously, Hephaistion my beloved.
Rivers of London (Ben Aaronovitch) - Wonderful, wonderful set of books about a PC in the Met who ends up in the secretive (and tiny) magical investigative branch. Fantastic characters, fun murder mysteries and magic. Some of the later books in the series began to feel a little slow and same-y for me, but the first three are absolute wonders. Peter Grant is a phenomenal main character.
Lord of the Rings (JRR Tolkien) - I know, I know, this is predictable, but... I love it. I love it so much. I love the theme of kindness outlasting evil; of good triumphing not because of the strongest person, but because of the idea that anyone can stand up and make a difference. Also I love Boromir. I said what I said. 🤣
That's all I've got for now - I read a lot, but tend to be really, really picky, so something has to have a huge impact to stay on my 'absolute must-reads' list forever. However, I'm curious if anyone has any recs they'd like to send - I'm always up for hoarding more books!

If you want either of these muses, or I owe you with one of these muses, let me know. In case you DO want to write, I suggest sending an IC ask for me to reply as an icebreaker rather than a meme, because my brain is dead for starters or memes. If you want to plot, go ahead and plot. Be aware that Wade is very picky and mostly wants other Peters. Also, I hadl inked absolutely every bio attached to the characters but forewhatever reason Beta decided to remove the links ^^ Thus, I am sorry, but you'll have to ask me for the link if you have doubts,

MacMillan swore again. “I don’t know what’s worse.” he muttered “That there’s such a thing as a river god cutting about Hereford, or that it happens often enough that we’ve got a name for it!”
No Archive Warnings Apply, rated T and up.
On Ao3.
I only have the audiobooks of Rivers of London so please tell me if I have spelled a Rivers of London term wrong!
