What is

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is a cult classic puzzle video game published by Capcom in 2010 for the Nintendo DS. On June 30th 2023 the game was re-released in HD for the Nintendo Switch, ps4, Xbox, and PC. An iOS port is also available. The game has never been more accessible and I couldn't be happier about it. Now almost anyone has the chance to experience what in my opinion is the best story ever told in gaming. It's a murder mystery where you play as the victim to find out who killed you and why, using your limited ability to interact with the physical world as a ghost to communicate with people and save lives along the way. The lore, gameplay, characters and story are all intrinsically linked in the most stunning case of ludo-narrative cohesion I've ever witnessed. The game also rewards the player very much for paying attention to little things - interesting ways a character may act, strange lines of dialogue, the ways things are animated - it all pays service to the story, and thinking about why things are the way they are can help you discover the mystery in real time. This; alongside the larger than life characters, stunning visual design (a unique mix of anime, cartoon and film noir), satisfying puzzles and deeply atmospheric soundtrack make for a delightful, engaging and rewarding experience

Giotto was not particularly outspoken in class settings, but he was a fine student and fairly active and keen to engage with the local community. He went in undeclared and eventually settled into political science because it was simply what interested him, in addition to a lot of philosophy and some studio art electives. He’s a good writer, and can whip up a crazy effective grant proposal. He enjoys creating things with his hands, such as pottery, forging simple metal jewelry (namely rings), and painting. As he got caught up with work more, he got less and less time for those creative hobbies.

He participated in a lot of direct action groups on campus and ran for some position in the legislative branch of the associated student government. He had a group of close friends that included G and Cozart, and the group would be found floating around, sitting on grass in the quad or in the student community building’s meeting rooms, discussing various things that may or may not be related to student gov.

Giotto is a pretty hopeless romantic, in the way that.. he has a tendency to see the world through rose-tinted glasses, firmly believing in the good of humanity. While he romanticizes the grind, his partner would likely be the one that reminds him to take a step back and rest. He’s surrounded by people with big hopes and dreams, as he should, but it can be a little too inspiring. He’ll lose a lot of sleep because he spends time thinking about the good and the bad and the ugly and the beautiful.

His partner is always there to listen to him ramble about his hopes and dreams, but they’re also there to ground him, remind him to pay attention to them, to get ready for bed, snuggle up, meditate, literally anything to take his mind off of what his next move is. Sometimes, the next move should just be.. nothing, for now.

They remind him that they want to go into the ceramics studio next week, and he pauses. His breath is held still in his chest as the constantly turning gears slow almost to a stop, and he takes a moment to process before he exhales audibly, with a soft smile “...it’s been a while, huh?”

Initially, he was very formal in the way that he pursued his s/o-to-be. They started as colleagues or friends, and something about them just.. caught his eye. For being such a well-spoken man, he cannot put to words what exactly made him feel so strongly about them, but he feels it very viscerally. I don’t see him as anything but a friends-to-lovers type of man. Even on a first date, the dialogue and banter flow as usual, and there is a natural chemistry on top of their preexisting friendship. He tries his best to pace himself in terms of what is considered a “natural” progression of the relationship, but it’s almost as if he knows that he’s all-in with his partner from the get-go. His loyalty and devotion is unmatched.

One time, as a joke, his partner referred to him as their husband. He malfunctioned right then and there. If he had a tail, it would have been wagging. Setting Idea

Magic is nothing like science, or science fiction, but those can be helpful terms to explain where it comes from. I don't know that multiverse, or omniverse theories have any truth to them, but if you imagine that all of this, everything we see or observe through science is one reality, and that there may or may not be others out there, then magic is like the space between.

The outside.

That's better. I like that one more. Forget everything I said about other universes that's not relevant. Magic is what exists outside of reality. Its not compatible with reality. That's why you don't see people launching fireballs down main street.

People that can do magic? People like me? People like you? We're the ones who've fallen through the cracks in reality. We're a little bit Outside.

Most of us stay there. Straddling the line. Living in both worlds. You can't do too much, but with what you can, reality smooths the edges over for those on the inside. They don't see the magic —can't see the magic. We can't do anything so big it can't be explained away within the bounds of reality, and reality takes care of the explaining for us.

Of course that isn't enough for some folks. Some people want the big stuff. They go deeper. Further out. That's where they find the power to really break the rules of reality. Or they would if reality had any interest in being broken.

You see, once you take that step further outside? Reality can't fudge the lines anymore. It's not able to hide what you're doing within the realms of possibility. So sure, you can gather power and fling fireballs down the street, but they aren't going to burn anyone, or anything. Reality can't handle that, so it just doesn't. You know what reality can handle? A strange person screaming magic spells in the middle of the street while everyone looks at them like they are crazy.

I can see from the glint in your eye that its still caught your imagination, and I can't say I really blame you, you're not the only one that's for sure. Who wouldn't want to live out their dreams of fantasy? But it's dangerous. Okay? Remember what I said. Pay attention. You've got to be on top of this shit if you're going to go deeper.

Magic like that doesn't belong on the inside, right? You go that deep, you're not on the inside anymore. You're too far out for reality to protect. That fireball might do jack squat against a real building but it will sure has heck scorch you. And there are plenty of other people who want to play in that sandbox with you and they are not always the nicest.

You go that route, you best find someone to teach you fast, and be right smart about it. City dwellers are your best bet. You surround yourself by anchors to reality and you get a bit of that protection back. Reality has a bit of trouble blurring the lines if you get incinerated when surrounded by hundreds of civilians, and that means some of their safety becomes yours.

Out in the middle of nowhere? Reality doesn't have to try so hard.

And don't get me started on the magical communities. You get that many outsiders in one location and they start to drag that place Outside with them. They loosen the grip of reality on that place and the rules stop getting enforced so strongly. It's dangerous, you hear me? Yeah they aren't getting obliterated ever second Friday, but I'd sleep with one eye open and magic at my fingertips if everyone around could do what those folk can.

And that isn't even the worst. There are people who jump the line; they don't hardly straddle at all anymore. The real powerhouses of the magical world. They make the trade, sacrificing all ability to engage with the real world in exchange for greater magic. A person like that? They could walk down the street streaming lightening from their fingertips and screaming at God and not a soul would know.

What's beyond that? Rumors only from me. People with only the barest of ties to reality. If they exist then I would never see them. Like a ghost. Unable to exist in reality itself, their power creates a reflection of their surroundings to exist in, like a funhouse mirror. They could level a city in an instant, but only the dreamscape version of it would be destroyed, reality itself would never know.

If any further is possible I can only imagine. Maybe once you got that far outside, that immersed in magic, you'd be no different than a God. The ultimate force of a world or your own creation. Maybe that multiverse idea isn't so far fetched after all. Maybe all this is just the creation of someone who stepped to far out of their own reality to ever return.

it's been a while since i last shared the game that currently has my attention, and currently that is outward: definitive edition (dev: nine dot studios). this got long, so i'll put it under the cut. the short of it is that i am in love with this game that is catered to freaks like me in every way!

the game was first released in 2019, and the definitive edition including all dlcs came out in 2022, and i'd say this game was on my radar since 2020-2022, but i never really played it until now. i've been enjoying my time with this game, and what a game it is! it makes me feel like most of my favorites do: scrabbling for victories, being forced to get by the skin of my neck, and having to always play past my mistakes. in many ways it reminds me of favorites such as dragon's dogma, morrowind my heavily modded skyrim, and souls games to an extent, but with survival elements added on to it.

to set the stage, this game puts you in the boots of a gender neutral Just A Guy™ who is saddled with debt incurred by their grandmother and is on the verge of losing their lighthouse home. in aurai, actions that damage the community may incur what is called a blood price, meaning a bloodline may have to pay the price of said actions even decades or centuries removed from the action. the first chapter of your adventure sees you attempting to repay a parcel of the blood price on your bloodline by whatever means possible within 5 days, after your hard work was lost in the same shipwreck that nearly took your life. and off you go to do that. you can approach this goal by whatever means you can come up with and you can also fail to do so, and the game will continue. where i am currently, i managed to barely make the deadline and have been exploring the world. there are currently four factions i can approach in order to advance the plot, but i am taking my time to meet all of them before i make a decision. they each are tackling different issues in aurai at the moment, such as the holy mission's quest to fight against the scourge.

the moment to moment gameplay is very engaging to me. it really is a game that anyone who knows me knows that of course it will appeal to me. navigation reminds me of morrowind with npcs giving you directions and a complete lack of quest markers (or even an indication of where you are in the map! you need to orient yourself using landmarks and road signs). combat is brutal and best avoided at most times. you need to manage your inventory and loadout for the climate and your needs, as well as what you expect to encounter in your journeys, where the weight of your inventory is very important. your stats will become burnt (i.e., you will have a temporarily reduced maximum stamina until rest) the more you use them, greatly emphasizing how you're just a rando. there is magic in this world, but you don't start out with mana needed to cast spells and must perform a difficult pilgrimage to the center of the mountain that dominates the landscape of the first area. and even then, you must sacrifice your precious hp and stamina to build a mana pool. the tradeoff: magic has been absolutely fun and op in my experience. the game rewards preparation and knowing when the fuck to leg it most of all. and if you meet your untimely demise, you're not sent to the last checkpoint. instead, the game rolls one of the appropriate defeat scenarios appropriate to your current situation which can be a boon or a curse (and honestly must have been the inspiration to the alternative death system part of this skyrim mod). the game constantly autosaves, so savescumming isn't a possibility. most of all, you wander in a lovely environment to the sound of bangers.

pictures were only edited to add some small grain and are at the native resolution of the steam deck since it's where i've been playing! i do want to look at it on my laptop too. it also features online and splitscreen co-op, but i haven't tried that out. i do hear it's a great way to approach the game. another thing i really enjoyed learning about is the studio's investment in promoting a crunch-free, ethical philosophy to game development, and extending that over their publishing efforts in order to foster the development of more indie niche games developped ethically.

Our Responsibility in Spirit Work

Deciding to walk with and work with spirits is a responsibility to yourself, and to the spirits who decide to step forward. You are welcoming a teacher, mentor, friend, and a deeply intimate relationship into your life. You are willingly asking for someone to come into your life with the goal of aiding and helping you on your path. 

Your responsibility is to interact with them, to learn self-mastery in order to effectively communicate with them. This is a reciprocal relationship. The spirit chooses you as much as you decide to work with them. There’s a level of commitment there that must be honored, which is something that not a lot of newer people realize when they begin their spirit work journeys. 

When you reach out to find a guide or companion, you are also reaching into the whole realm of spirits and all forms that they may take: the good, the bad, and the ugly. This becomes a life-long journey, sure you can close yourself off and give it all up, but you have already invested in this. You’ve invested time, money, and research into this world. 

If you open yourself up to spirits, you should also be able to open your mind to the vast amount of different ideas and approaches that are out there. This path is not for anyone that is unwilling to challenge themselves and is comfortable with staying within their own bubble. A lot of times if a spirit that you work with does not challenge you and does not help you to grow or carry out tasks, chances are they are a projection of your own mind. It happens. It’s not a failure on your part to work with a servitor you had accidentally created. They also have their own place in the craft. If you do decide to begin working with spirits, discernment, and a good banishing ritual will be your best friends. 

Before you begin this journey take time to really think it through. Think about the time and energy that needs to be put into this practice, from spending time with your spirit allies to learning how to engage with your psychic and astral senses in order to really communicate with them. Think about how much time you can dedicate to each spirit and really pay attention to how much time you actually commit to them. Over time it gets easier but there will always be some amount of bumps in the road such as life getting in the way or hitting a fallow period. In these instances, communication is key. It’s important to reach out and let them know what is going on and renegotiate any contracts that you have currently going. Will they accept a different offering? Will they accept delayed offerings? 

While yes, they understand and can ease up on the contracts sometimes, feeding is still an important part of the symbiotic relationship of the witch and their familiar. It’s an integral part of the contract and must be honored. This is why it’s so important to make sure that you don’t overextend yourself when reaching out and establishing these connections. We all deal with physical illnesses, our mental health might take a hit. But our spirits must still be honored and they can often be instrumental in helping us to understand what exactly we need to do in order to bounce back. 

Make sure to really take time when “interviewing” your familiar. Set out your expectations and clear goals. Really try to get to know them. Ask them questions about themselves. Ask what they expect from you. Utilize divination methods to help facilitate communication. Tarot or Oracle cards can be helpful to get to know them and can give them a mode of communication that can be really clear. You can also get a better read on them and their energy. For figuring out what offerings they like, pendulums can be instrumental in being able to help figure out exactly what the spirit wants in terms of offerings through the use of yes/no questions. You can also ask the spirit for specific signs of what they want.

It’s all about being able to communicate with them and making the terms and conditions as clear as possible. This is easier if you have a more developed clairaudience or clairsentience, but anyone- with a little work and effort- is able to communicate with spirits. If you find something isn’t working, bring it up to them. Everything is negotiable. Start with the standard offerings and sacrifices that can be applied to most, if not every spirit. This includes water, cakes, coins, oils, incense, and sometimes even a little bit of blood. I know that’s a scary sentiment, but traditionally witches would offer their blood to spirits. It’s seen throughout the witch trials. These are seen as safe bet offerings. The spirits you contact will probably have more specific things they like. For example, if you’re working with a human spirit, they may have had vices in their life such as smoking or drinking so for them, a pack of their favorite cigarettes or drink of choice would make an excellent offering.

When I was first exploring Spirit Work, I messed up. I was young and naive as to how everything worked and had a fantastical approach that just wasn’t accurate. I neglected my end of the contract with the spirit I was working with and for a while, my life fell apart. I was constantly broke and the situation that I had tasked my familiar with fell through. It was completely my fault. I had missed specified offerings and the Spirit I was working with took offense. We hadn’t really formed a relationship at the time and there was no communication that I was in a depressive episode without the energy to make the offerings. It seemed like a monumental task at the time and I didn’t push myself to make the offering anyway. No one wants to pay the tax man but we all have to. I tried to avoid it and it blew up in my face. I fumbled that relationship for a while. There’s no shame in hiding it. I know a lot of posts make it seem that everything is okay all the time, that just isn’t the reality. Life gets gritty and we all make occasional mistakes on our Paths.

However, I was able to understand that the spirit wasn’t happy. I didn’t make my offerings, and they were doing the work for me without payment. Understandably, they were unhappy. And they found a way to take their payment. Finally, I was able to muster up enough energy and willpower to conjure them and explain what exactly happened and make appeasement offerings. We opened a dialogue and were able to communicate what exactly happened. They became more of a mentor from there on for me in the ways of navigating working with spirits. They kind of took pity on me for not really knowing what I was doing and jumping into the deep end of things. Someone else I know went through something similar, the situation didn’t really work out like that. They ended up having to cut ties with that spirit and banish them. There was a lot of work that had to be done to put their life back into order. They had to essentially build their practice from the ground up again and relearn everything.

There’s a lot to consider before throwing yourself into spirit work and you should take all the time that you need to figure it all out before beginning this journey. And while you’re figuring this out, research as much as you can. Look through accounts of traditional witches and even modern practitioners. Ask questions to witches who are willing to teach. Really understand what it means to open your home to familiars and spirits. Learn ways to defend yourself and your space if need be. 

While yes, you can communicate with them to let them know what is going on, it shouldn’t become commonplace in your practice. You can’t be late on your credit card payments every month and expect nothing to happen. It’s the same with spirit work. This makes it sound transactional, and that’s because it is. Traditionally speaking, familiars are our assistants and mentors in the craft. We learn from them and ask them to perform tasks for us. In return, they expect payment. As you develop your relationship with your familiar and other spirits, the nature of the relationship will naturally change. It will still be transactional, but it will also come with more leeway when there are disruptions to your life.

Opening yourself up to the Spirit World, and welcoming them into your home comes with a lot of responsibilities. Going into this type of work understanding the nuances of what it means to have and work with a familiar can ease some of the fumbling that can happen in the beginning. It means you are better prepared to navigate a relationship with Spirits. It means a more successful journey with Them.

Of all places to think this through via typing, I'm fully aware that tumblr dot com may not be the best.

But it's the one I got, so bing, that's the one that gets it.

But I'm just... I'm confused by the mass opinions about schools and, more importantly, what people seem to??? actually want to do???? about them???? Or how????? To address them?????

(please note that this is all USA-centric as that is my experience in both learning and teaching.)

Like, I see people who seem to be upset by the mandatory k-12 schooling. Upset that it's required, upset how it's run, upset by the lack of options, upset in general. There's a lot of anger and hate towards the system, and I honestly feel, just given what I see, that some people are negative two steps away from calling for a complete teardown of the system and a restructuring of it without a concrete plan on what the new system should do or look like.

Like, in an ideal world, here's what k-12 should teach students:

How to participate in a society that requires both give (common courtesy to others, respect for boundaries, spending money) and take (asking for that raise, enforcing your own boundaries, self-advocacy),

The basic knowledge that is required to function in a wide community while ensuring independence (basic mathematics for budgeting, time management, and basic planning AND how to move logically from one step to the next; physical education for taking care of one's body, knowing one's limits, and conditioning it to ensure that it continues to work for you as you age; history and political science to ensure that every citizen can engage meaningfully and knowledgeably in a democracy; science to have a fundamental understanding of how the world around you works, which slows the influx of faulty in misinformation, AND to teach procedural thought processes that allow students to analyze what they see; and English or literature to show students how to engage critically with a text [fiction is fun and can be a vehicle for symbolism and powerful themes, absolutely, but you SHOULD be able to take these skills to important documents such as contracts and laws in order to know what you're signing your life away to]. At LEAST.)

I know that second one was a lot, but these are the two points. This is what schools should teach. This is what teachers should teach.

The problem is that there are so many obstacles in the way of us doing these things.

Mathematics should be taught with and for a purpose: budgeting, time management, basic planning of projects that you may encounter in The Wild (day-to-day life). Trying to teach students the formulas gets pushback of "why will we ever need this." Trying to teach the students using word problems and examples gets pushback of "what the fuck this is too complicated. Can't you just say what you mean and quit bogging us down with this word nonsense?" Then there's the whole thing of logical steps/progression (which is necessary for any type of long-term or short-term planning), and very few people can agree on what way is best to teach this sort of thing aside from "follow these steps to get the answer. Each step is important, and logical progression should be followed." And that gets the "fuck you; I'll go to the back of the book. Why should I care?"

Science should also be taught with and for a purpose: reducing misinformation, encouraging critical thought, and exploring the world around us. But then the fun science experiments that teachers wanna do get reduced to "oooh, pretty explosion!" or "what a waste of time. It's just showy nonsense" instead of "hey, this is how the world works. Pay attention: if you combine all of these cleaning supplies together, they will kill you." Common warnings about dangers in the world and equally common solutions to problems we, as a human race, have encountered before get ignored in school. And the scientific process, as fun as we try to make it, also gets reduced to "be a cog in the machine. No thought; only steps." which is. So not the point.

Physical education is one of the most abused, I think, and I think I've got a right to say it because physed is my beloathed. I hated my P.E. teachers because they'd sit there and yell at us to do more while not doing it with us. It felt condescending. Now, as I'm older, I see some of the shit they were trying to do, but how the fuck do you get hyperactive kids to relax through yoga they don't wanna do, and how do you get introverted kids to run around and strengthen their lungs when team activities are the most horrible things on the planet? P.E. should be about building you up, but that's hard to do in classes that combine to have over 150 kids per period.

History and Social Sciences are also my beloathed. But hate them as I might, they do serve a very important purpose: inform the new generations of how this system works and how to participate in it. It's supposed to teach them how the three branches of government are meant to work together, and it's meant to teach them their role in the government, and it's meant to teach them that the government should always be in support of the people that create it. The thing is that the class basically gets gag ordered depending on where you are, and the information that's given is sometimes idealized to the point of uselessness. These classes should teach students to be responsible and engaged citizens. It's supposed to.

And English. My subject. I didn't know back then what I was meant to be learning because everyone was like "read it, and tell me what you thought" without telling me that the surface wasn't it. English is supposed to teach critical thinking and explanation of the self. You're supposed to be able to use evidence to construct balanced, thought-out arguments. You're supposed to be able to write for an audience other than yourself. You're supposed to find the steps to think something through. And, yeah, grammar mechanics and spelling actually are an important part of this. A geographically locked spelling of one word may be almost indecipherable to another, so using one or two standardized spellings of words helps you to reach out on a global scale. (for instance, everyone will look at you oddly if you try to spell using Old English. But I can rant on these things and knowing rules to break those rules another time)

And if you've read this far and thought "school sure as hell didn't do that for me," then know that--as per some of the notes above--I agree with you. I didn't learn the PE shit until later. I definitely didn't get the English thing until later.

So what's the point of school if the students aren't learning?

Well, one thing is plain exposure. Exposure to the ideas, exposure to start and ask questions later. Obviously it would be better that they learned the first time, but that's not realistic. Exposure is important. I wouldn't have known to look into yoga if I hadn't had to do a bit of it in school. And I wouldn't have known too much about stories and universal themes if my English teachers hadn't made me read a few that were riddled with symbols and themes that I later learned other people actually took seriously.

But also, problems????? With school????? So many of them?????

The whole 'sit all day and cram all day and not even able to use the bathroom what the fuck is wrong with you, you totalitarian regime?'

Yes, there's a reason for that. No, the reason doesn't hold weight for people who don't give a shit about what they're meant to learn. Yes, there are alternative options. I'm pissed as hell that I have to count a tardy as 'someone who leaves at the start of class, basically fucks off the whole time, and only comes back before class ends.' Because other students pulled that shit and ruined it for the future classes. It's also distracting af to myself and the other students. Forget sabotaging your own grade, you're also doing it to others.

However. Guys, this is an Idea that I found that boggled my everlovin' mind. Block schedules. Part of the reason Jr. High and High School were stressful to me and my peers is because it was the same exact routine every single school day. 50 or so minutes per class, 7 classes a day, with one lunch and no recess except to run from one class to another. I didn't know about block schedules until I heard about it from other schools. Block schedules rearrange the hours of the classes so that way students get differing schedules on alternative days. It allows classes to go longer, which can allow teachers to get a few more lessons in, teach the students, give students more opportunity to get work done and ask questions, and not perpetually exhaust students day in and day out with the same high-paced routine. Those who have had this claim it's got its own problems, but it sounds like an upgrade to me.

And if we can get students to a place where they understand the need to learn the bare basics of society to join and be a part of making it work (maybe even changing it, who knows???), then it might be easier to believe bathroom breaks instead of knowing students are stealing a toilet (has happened), are damaging property (has happened), are beating someone else up in the bathroom (has happened. There was blood), are smoking cigarettes or vaping or smoking weed in the bathroom (idk about anyone else, but I'm sensitive to that shit and it fucking hurts, and lots of high schoolers don't yet have a sense of 'what I do hurts others' on a deep and intrinsic level [listen, they just got outta Jr. High. They ain't gonna know for a while]), or are doing something else that could cause harm to themselves (not terribly likely but likely enough to be concerned) or others (honestly more likely. Directly or indirectly). Like, the instant gratification monkey is hilarious in some aspects, and they are devastating in others. If we could teach personal responsibility and a bit of social responsibility before high school/junior high, then we could probably relax some of those rules a bit. And, honestly, I know these examples are anecdotal to my personal experience. I know some of them won't be believed. I know a lot of you guys just honest-to-god wanna use the bathroom.

I'd rather make a fucking world where teachers don't have to count heads and wonder if the kid who's been gone for 25 minutes or so is still alive out there. So it's easier to tell if there's an emergency and take action quickly (teachers do have to keep an eye out for emergency, btw. We're required to report anything that could cause damage to a student physically or emotionally. It's not always handled correctly, which ik I was a victim of when in elementary school [joy]).

The 'I can't focus due to my tough situation.'

One of the questions asked of my dad during his interview is "what would you do if a student skipped your class? What if she claimed her mom had cancer? What if she showed you proof? What if she was having breakdowns every other day?"

Every step of this was a test to see if my dad could be a flexible, empathetic, and firm teacher. My own interviews had to focus on the community and how I best want to serve my own students at a different level. We know that things are tough, and teachers do what we can. There are systems in place, and they are imperfect, and if you want them to change, please for the love of god figure out something that we can enact. I know I would rather be able to help all of my students on almost a tutor level, but there is not enough time in the day. And I only have roughly 150 per semester. Imagine high school teachers, who can have 180-250 per year. We try, but there's not much we can do without the support we need.

The 'can't the teacher see that I am fucking exhausted? How am I supposed to learn when I can't sleep! They should know the studies!'

My guys. We know. We are fully aware. And yet, all of the constructed arguments are directed at the teachers, which is the same as yelling at the clerk in the checkout lane. We are not in charge of this. Hell, idek if the principal is in charge of this. State and federal governments are in charge of this. Teachers are right there in the class with you. Some of us try to let you catch up on sleep when we can. Some of us squirrel away energy and granola bars in our classrooms and offices to try and help you out (on our own dime, btw. Like a school would reimburse for this. pfft). The teachers. Know. We see it. There's also very little we can do about it. We can recommend getting more rest. We can try to give you some in class when the lesson plans allow for it. We can try suggestions if asked for. We cannot change the school day or hours. You are complaining to the wrong people. Get together and start petitioning the state and/or federal courts for that kind of change.

The 'you've been taken in by the schooling overlords. I didn't learn a damn thing in school that helped me.'

Because the system is imperfect! And that's why there's so many of them! Some think we're doing too much and infringing on parental rights when we try to teach about the public. Hence, homeschooling. Some think that we're too unorganized and ineffective. Hence, charter schools. Some think we're definitely not doing enough to prepare the students for an actual life. Hence, private schools. And all the lobbying, lobbying, lobbying. And the endless fucking tests that students have to be prepped for lest a school lose their funding.

And, yeah. The teachers that I've spoken to hate the standardized tests, too. They are not a good gauge on what a student has learned, has retained, or is able to produce organically as a result of their learning. We know that bad days happen, and we all pray it doesn't happen on testing days.

So, my guys, please help in figuring out an alternative. Because, right now, those tests help determine funding for public schools, local and federal support, and student futures. They're cheap, easily standardized without huge norming sessions and trainings for teachers to go to, and able to be graded quickly. Those are the benefits, and on a nationwide/replicable scale, I can see why those benefits are alluring. However, a lot rides on those tests, and if there's to be an alternative, it needs a solidly proposed alternative for lawmakers to actually consider. Something that would beat those benefits out of the water.

I spend a good chunk of my teaching trying to break students of their tendency to be yet another cog in the machine. That's all they've been taught to do, and it's the result of a system that grinds both students and teachers (and some admin as well) into dust. And while the students fight the teachers and the teachers argue with and beg the admin for change, no one talks to the people who can enact the most change.

Just.

I see criticisms of the schooling system. Fair. Valid. The damn thing isn't perfect by any means. There are so many flaws that all of us are sick of.

I wish that, along with these criticisms, there was a way forward we could agree on that keeps the basic function of school in mind:

Teach them how to society.

Let them go make choices.
