The thing abt Dar-Bit is that on the one hand it's an easy pair the spares of the greaser gang. You have johnnyboy/purly for pony, johnyboy/jally for Johnny, jally/tally for Dally, and obv stevepop for soda and Steve, so what's left but darbit for darry and two bit.
But also it's things like:
They're both oldest brothers
Two-Bit is the member of the gang not related to pony who actually seems to look out for him as an older brother figure
Darry trusts Two-Bit to spend the day watching Pony
Two-Bit told Darry abt hiding Pony's fever and it being his fault Pony got sick
Two-Bit was willing to leave the state to look for Pony (and Johnny) after they ran off and Dally fed the cops a fake story
Two-Bit makes a gentle attempt to push back on Pony's Darry shit talking while walking Cherry and Marcia home
That scene before the rumble where Darry runs out the door to show off some gymnastics right as Two-Bit shows up and Two-Bit compliments his physique with a cocked eyebrow

Whumptober Day 13: Familial Curse
Love was a curse to the Curtis brothers. A foreign concept-- an unattainable dream. If they loved someone too much, they'd vanish into thin air: simple as that. All three of them could confirm this from experience.
In high school, Darry met a boy like no one else. Paul Holden was the best halfback on the team, blond, and had a smile that could light up a room. At once, Darry became infatuated. Paul didn't care that Darry came from the east side, and they became close friends almost as soon as they met.
Paul never once looked at him with pity or thought of him as less due to his financial situation. When Darry couldn't pay the fees to receive a letterman jacket, Paul paid for him. If Darry couldn't afford anything when the team went out for dinner, Paul would slide him some change.
He was understanding and patient, two words Darry would never have used to describe a Soc until he met this one. If Darry needed to skip a team hangout because his parents were making him babysit his little siblings, Paul was missing out too so that he could keep Darry company. If someone tried insulting Darry's shoes because had holes in them, Paul would tell them to mind their own damn business.
It wasn't until one late night beneath the stars that Darry realized what he felt for Paul was love. They were lying in the field, staring up at the sky after everyone else had gone home. Darry was wearing the letterman Paul paid for, and when he glanced over at his friend, his breath hitched. The moonlight brightened his blond, messy hair, and made his dimples appear more prominent. He was simply... gorgeous, in Darry's eyes.
Paul's attention turned over to Darry, and the two held each other's gaze for a few moments. Looking back, Darry didn't know who made the first move, but after a few moments, the two had their lips pressed against each other's in a kiss full of repressed emotions.
After that, the sneaking around started. Dates disguised as two friends hanging out, longing stares across classrooms, make out sessions behind locked doors. Nobody knew a thing: none of Darry's greasy hoodlum friends nor Paul's snobby Soc buddies.
Ponyboy did catch them once. Darry was wearing one of Paul's madras shirts while trying to sneak him out of the house without alerting their parents, when Pony left his room and ran into them. Darry came up with some crappy excuse that he knew the younger boy didn't buy, but Pony never mentioned it again, so neither did Darry.
Their breakup was inevitable. Darry loved him too much and thus their fate was sealed by his damn curse.
Paul's parents grew skeptical of the two's relationship, which made the boy more on edge than ever. Darry, who wasn't sure how he was supposed to pay for college, as his scholarship only paid so much of his tuition, was equally as stressed. This resulted in a nasty fight that neither of the two could even remember what over.
Paul wanted to make up: apologize and beg for Darry to take him back after his impulsive decision to end things, but he never got the chance to. He found out through Marcia that Darry's parents died, and after that, he never could find a good time to talk to him.
So Darry, when he needed someone to lean on the most, was left alone. Heartbreak turned from sorrow to bitter resentment. The love of his life never called him to check up. He didn't even bother to send his condolences. He couldn't help but hate him. However, deep down, Darry knew that he could never love a boy as he loved Paul ever again.
Sodapop had a charm to him that made anyone attracted to him: whether it be of admiration, respect, or love. He had the most beautiful personality, eyes to make girls swoon, and was able to keep his smile even in the darkest of situations.
When he first ran into Sandy Hatheway, his heart nearly stopped. She was breathtaking! She had long, smooth, blonde hair that Soda would end up running his hands through on numerous occasions, and the sweetest laugh!
She introduced herself calmly, not showing a hint of nervousness. Sodapop couldn't say the same thing. Although usually smooth with girls, he stumbled over his words and was flushed bright red by the end of their encounter. After she walked away, he promised himself that he'd marry her.
When she dropped by the DX station the following day, Soda was prepared and much more calculated. He asked her if she'd be interested in going to the drive-in with him, and she agreed. It wasn't too long afterwards that they officially got together.
Soda loved her like he loved no one. She was the one for him, he knew it. He wasn't afraid to show his love for her either. He was always doing affectionate gestures for her, and would even save his money to buy her special things. It wasn't as much as she deserved, he thought, but it was all that he could manage.
He thought she loved him too: not once did he consider that she didn't. If Soda thought that, he wouldn't have let himself get attached. He never would've confessed to Ponyboy that he wanted to marry her. If he thought she was cheating, he wouldn't have let his heart love her so deeply.
Steve was the one who told him. He heard via Evie that Sandy was pregnant. Soda's first instincts after hearing that wasn't fear or dread, but excitement. He was having a baby with the girl of his dreams, what wasn't to be happy about? But then Steve told him that it wasn't his, and all of his joy was crushed to pieces.
Sandy had cheated on him, and she hadn't even had the heart to tell him. Again, thanks to Evie, Soda found out she was going to stay with her grandmother in Florida. He wrote her letter and letter. He told her he'd step up and be that baby's father because he loved her so damn much, but she didn't even care to open a single one of them.
Just hearing her name was a stab to the heart, and even after months had passed, Soda couldn't get over it. It may have been a stupid teenage romance to everyone else, but to him, Sandy was supposed to be his soulmate. Then, she abandoned him, leaving Soda to struggle to be able to form a happy relationship ever again.
Love's curse didn't only have to be romantic, Ponyboy discovered. Even loving his best friend too much was apparently a death wish.
Johnny Cade met Ponyboy at the playground in elementary school. Pony was all alone, watching as the other kids his age ran around the park, laughing and screaming joyfully. They didn't let him play with them because he was filthy. He was wearing a hand-me-down shirt from Soda, that had a stain over the main picture in the middle, and the text was faded. They laughed at his shoes for being old, and called him names for not having the trendiest backpacks.
His eyes stung with tears as he heard their playfully shouts, when a boy sat beside him. Ponyboy looked up to see a boy who seemed to be a bit older than he was, with shaggy black hair and a bruise under his eye.
The boy introduced himself as Johnny, and Ponyboy recognized him: he was in Soda's class. The two spent the entire recess period bonding over shared interests, and by the time the bell rang, the tears on Pony's face had dried. From that day onward, they were inseparable. If Ponyboy went somewhere, Johnny was nearby, and vice versa.
If someone asked him, he would've told them that he loved Johnny. He was his best friend, and he would do anything for him. It didn't matter that it was 'weird' for boys to say that they loved their friends: Ponyboy loved him and there was nothing strange about it.
That night at the fountain, Johnny watched helplessly as the Socs drowned his best friend. In a moment of panic, he stabbed the lead Soc and watched as his body crumpled by his shoes. It was the only choice he had, Johnny told himself. If he hadn't done it, Ponyboy would be dead, and what would he do in that situation?
The boys ran to Windrixville and sought shelter there for about a week. In that time, they had deep conversations about things they'd never dare speak of to anyone else. It was refreshing, being away from society and free to be themselves. Nothing could ruin it: until the fire, of course.
The hardest thing Ponyboy ever had to do was witness his best friend lying in a hospital bed, covered in burns and in constant pain. Somewhere inside of him, he knew from the moment he saw Johnny in the hospital, that he was going to die, but he pushed those thoughts away.
Johnny's final spoken words to Ponyboy were "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." They played on repeat in Pony's mind until he could no longer recall what Johnny's voice sounded like, and they simply became words Pony's mind said on loop.
He didn't get a proper funeral. If he did, Ponyboy would've given him a proper eulogy. Instead, Pony prepared a small note that he would read after they buried him. He never ended up reading it, though. He was too shaken up to, and therefore the note sat on his desk, unheard by anyone.
"Johnny never had a chance in this world. If he did, we wouldn't be here today, but rather at a ceremony celebrating his accomplishments. Johnny could've gone far had fate chosen someone else to kill. Even though he had every reason not to be, Johnny was gold. He easily could've been mean and cold like Dally, but instead he chose to be good. Johnny chose to run into that fire, and he chose to not be bitter about it in the end. He was just too damn good for growing old.
I love him more than I think I can ever love anyone ever again. He wasn't just my best friend, but a part of me. He deserved so much better. In the end, he chose to be grateful for the life he had, and that's how I know nobody will ever be as gold as he was.
Goodbye, Johnny. I hope that, looking down, you'll be able to smile again. I love you."
It wasn't fair that everyone around them could love without consequences. But life wasn't fair, the Curtis brothers discovered, and it never would be. They'd all be better of never loving again than to risk losing someone else all because their hearts loved too much.

Back to the house with your arms round my neck.
We drank pork soda with tangled legs;

thinking about darry and ponyboy finally bonding over being queer. bonding over losing that person who helped them discover everything, but they lost them in different ways. ponyboy lost johnny to tragedy and death, darry lost paul to the pull of social standards and the paths they went down.
idk where im going with this but. i just can see this happening a few years down the road. once ponyboy is a little older, and he maybe finds the words to finally explain some of the feelings he was having as a younger kid. and maybe darry watching his baby brother grow up and fumble through the same feelings he remembers having at that age. its just very special to me
