|St Patrick and the Irish
The saints day has been marked in Ireland since the 10th Century but became a holy day celebrated by both the Catholic and Anglican churches after a campaign by Franciscan friar Luke Waddington  and was established in 1631 on the day of the Saint’s death 17th March. The feast day became a rallying and meeting point for the Irish wherever emigration took them, from New York to New Zealand. The…

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps: Supporting UK's Armed Forces
Tumblr media
  Putting People First
In his inaugural month as Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps embarked on a mission to underscore the pivotal role of personnel within the British Armed Forces. Emphasizing the enduring significance of servicemen and women, Shapps conducted his maiden visits to the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force, reiterating his unwavering commitment to supporting serving personnel and their families.   Prioritizing Personnel Engagement During these visits, Shapps prioritized meetings with Armed Forces personnel, seeking to gain insight into their experiences and concerns. His primary objective was to assure them that they remained at the core of the nation's defense efforts.
Shapps' Pledge of Support
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps expressed his gratitude for the dedication and expertise of each member of the Armed Forces. He affirmed his pride in leading this remarkable organization, stressing his dedication to safeguarding the nation's security and prosperity. Simultaneously, he vowed to enhance the experiences of personnel and their families, addressing various aspects, from childcare and accommodation to compensation and equipment.
A Day Aboard the Royal Navy in Portsmouth
One leg of Shapps' tour took him to the bustling naval base in Portsmouth, where he engaged with serving Navy personnel. Here, he delved into their experiences and the opportunities the service provides. Shapps had the privilege of touring the Type 45 HMS Defender, a vessel that has recently played a central role in joint operations alongside the UK's allies. Notably, the ship had completed four operations and four exercises in the year preceding its refit, including the pivotal Exercise Formidable Shield. The Defence Secretary received briefings on Navy priorities and held discussions with representatives from BAE Systems, a vital defense partner supporting numerous jobs and livelihoods across the UK.
A Visit to Salisbury Plain: Meeting the Army
Journeying to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, Shapps, accompanied by Chief of the General Staff General Sir Patrick Sanders, met with British soldiers at the heart of a UK-led training program. This initiative has successfully trained more than 26,500 Ukrainian recruits to date. Shapps heard inspiring stories from these soldiers and observed world-leading training practices before receiving briefings on the Army's priorities, particularly its modernization efforts.
Taking to the Skies with the Royal Air Force
At RAF Waddington, Shapps, accompanied by Chief of the Air Staff, and Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, actively engaged with personnel serving at the station. This included those from 51 and XIII Squadrons, who are responsible for operating Rivet Joint and Reaper Aircraft, respectively. During this visit, the Defence Secretary listened attentively to their experiences and took note of the recent accomplishments of the Royal Air Force. Additionally, he received briefings on the RAF's intelligence-gathering roles crucial for national defense.
Unseen Guardians of Defense: Strategic Command
Strategic Command, headquartered at Northwood, London, and under the leadership of General Sir Jim Hockenhull, plays a pivotal role in providing often-unnoticed elements of defense. During his meeting with General Jim, the Defence Secretary was briefed on the work carried out by specialists within the organization, including cyber operators, intelligence analysts, medics, and logisticians. Strategic Command's integration of capabilities across defense ensures that the Armed Forces stand ready to respond at any time and in any place. Shapps discussed the multitude of ongoing initiatives aimed at attracting, upskilling, and retaining individuals, particularly those with expertise in science, digital, and technical fields.
A Visit to Kyiv: Reinforcing Support for Ukraine
This week, in a significant development, the Defence Secretary extended his reach beyond the UK, embarking on a journey to Kyiv alongside Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin. The primary purpose of this noteworthy visit was to emphatically reiterate the UK's steadfast and unwavering support for Ukraine during these challenging times.   Chief of the Defence Staff's Perspective Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, expressed his satisfaction with the Secretary of State's visit, underscoring its significance in the context of the evolving global security landscape. Furthermore, he highlighted the UK's substantial investments in its Army, Royal Air Force, and Royal Navy, clearly outlining plans for increased lethality and strength within NATO. Admiral Radakin also touched upon the transition to fifth-generation aircraft in the Royal Air Force and advancements in space capabilities. Ultimately, he credited the commitment and skill of the Armed Forces, as well as their international and industry partnerships, for safeguarding the nation. In conclusion, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps' initial month in office has been characterized by a strong emphasis on personnel and their importance in the broader defense strategy. As he tours military bases and engages with servicemen and women, Shapps leaves no doubt about his dedication to ensuring their well-being.   Sources: THX News, Ministry of Defence &The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP. Wood Engraving Wednesday
MONICA POOLE & GERI WADDINGTON
For our showcase of women wood engravers, this week we present two prints by master British wood engravers Monica Poole (1921-2003) and Geri Waddington (b. 1953). Although Waddington, chair of the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) from 2014-2017, only developed a virtual friendship with the master engraver and fellow SWE member Poole in the last few years her life, Poole’s influence on Waddington’s work and career has been profound. Waddington writes:
[Poole’s] support was invaluable, both in business and artistic matters. This was the woman who had kept wood engraving alive in the lean post-war years, and her commitment to the medium was clearly evident. . . .
After Monica died, I was able to buy her small Albion press, which I continue to use regularly. It still gives me a frisson to follow in her footsteps. . . . and I have now doubt that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Shown here are Monica Poole’s 1988 print After the Storm (top) and Geri Waddington’s 2019 print New Hedge. Both were printed from the original blocks for 2020 Vision: Nineteen Wood Engravers, One Collector, and the Artists Who Inspired Them, published in 2020 by Patrick Randle’s Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in an edition of 340 copies for the 100th anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers.

Video
youtube
This video was released 10 years ago by some remarkably brave BYU students: Mark, Adam White, Heather Waddington, Derek Flora, Jenna Hawkins, Erikka Beam, Kiefer, Kevin, Nathan Cunliffe, Bridey Jensen, Andrew Brown, Kaden, Amber Bell, Madison Price, Ellen, Demaree, Blake, Nicole, John Patrick McKenna, Matt, Kristin & Tom
To understand how surprising & impactful this video was and the courage of those who in it, consider the climate at BYU and in the Church at that time.
————————————————————
In 2005, BYU professors publish Understanding Same-sex Attraction, a paper openly advocating “therapy to cure sexual attractions.”
2006 a group of queer activists came to BYU to honor and commemorate 22 recorded BYU-LGBT suicides. 24 people were arrested
2007 the BYU Honor Code is updated to say homosexual feelings are not a violation but acting on them is. Students were no longer punished for identifying as gay, lesbian, trans, or “SSA.” Homosexual advocacy was banned, and this was defined as "seeking to influence others to engage in homosexual behavior or promoting homosexual relations as being morally acceptable."
2008 the LDS Church engages in high-profile effort to pass Prop 8 in California to stop gay marriage
2010 had a member of the Church’s Presiding Bishopric say people shouldn’t refer to themselves as homosexual, lesbian, or gay, and that same-gender attraction won’t exist after death. In General Conference, Elder Packer says that God would not let people be born with same-sex attractions and not be able to change or overcome those feelings
In 2010, BYU removed the official restriction on LGBTQ+ students participating and gathering in groups. BYU USGA (Understanding Sexuality, Gender, and Allyship) was organized but not made an official BYU club/organization. (BYU has not officially recognized any LGBTQ+ club on campus in all these years since no longer banning them)
2011 saw the ban on “homosexual advocacy” removed from the Honor Code. Students could now openly support and affirm queer relationships and legislation, meaning students could go to Pride without fear of being expelled from school
2012, BYU’s school newspaper, The Daily Universe, published an 'opinion' piece about the adoption of a child by a gay couple on the TV show Modern Family. The one line that truly stuck out asked, "Would you allow a child to be raised by a serial killer? A rapist? Then why would you a same-sex couple?" A group of BYU students printed flyers that called out the piece in the Daily Universe and invited others to see that we are just like the rest of you! The editor was flooded with responses and he agreed to take it down and gave these LGBT students an opportunity to write an article. This success led them to create a YouTube video to broadcast to the entire campus & others that growing up LGBT was challenging & that things GET BETTER. This USGA video It Gets Better at BYU video goes viral. Later that year, BYU banned USGA from meeting on campus and they relocate their meetings to the public library
————————————————————
Derek Flora recently shared that his father was teased and dragged by his own brothers for having a gay son after they saw this video. That is sad but not surprising given how widespread & acceptable it was to be openly homophobic.
This video reached a lot of queer LDS people who finally saw someone like them, it gave hope to many. This video also did a lot to open hearts and help soften attitudes and move things forward.
My understanding is that all of the BYU students who appeared in this video are no longer active in the LDS Church. That’s what happens when there’s no seat at the table, no opportunities for full engagement and inclusion

Morristown Central School District leaving St. Lawrence-Lewis Health Insurance Consortium | Education
MASSENA – Morristown Central School District will leave the St. Lawrence-Lewis Health Insurance Consortium and join Canton, Edwards-Knox, Ogdensburg, Madrid-Waddington and Heuvelton school districts that have already withdrawn from the plan.
This leaves 12 participating districts and the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services in the consortium.
“One of the school districts, Morristown, is leaving the plan. That was discussed at this (quarterly) meeting. They had to file their notification by April 30th so they could exit the plan by July 1st, ”Patrick Brady, superintendent of Massena Central School, told members of the education committee on Thursday evening.
“There has been some discussion about this process, but at the end of the day this district will be leaving the plan, which means we are looking at 12 school districts and the BOCES that are part of the St. Lawrence-Lewis Plan,” he said.
Mr. Brady is the district’s representative on the plan’s board of directors.
He said the plan “still sees the overall impact of some COVID savings as fewer people visit their doctor for normal, routine activities. But that is starting to change; that is starting to increase a little. “
Mr Brady said revenue is currently low due to a decline in enrollments and a slow switch in some counties to low-reward drivers.
“But overall the plan is 9% below budget in terms of medicine. Prescription drugs are starting to rise 3%. It’s usually a handful of prescription drugs that are expensive and not generic. They are brand names and they are expensive. But we’re seeing some sort of return to normal in that regard, ”he said.
Excellus Blue Cross / Blue Shield has taken over health insurance administration for the plan as of January 1, 2020. This role has been served in the BOCES administration by staff on the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services for more than 30 years. Locey & Cahill, LLC is serving as an advisor to the plan.
Mr Brady said Locey & Cahill plans to seek proposals for a Medicare benefit plan this fall to see if it would be beneficial to the plan as a whole.
“That would mean those 65 and older would get a separate health insurance plan from the rest of the plan,” he said.
Locey & Cahill also wanted to conduct an exam from Excellus.
“Now that Excellus is in charge, they want to be sure that Excellus is managing the plan as it should. This is not an Excellus plan. It’s still the St. Lawrence-Lewis and Districts plan, but it is administered by Excellus and uses the Excellus network, ”Brady said.
He said health insurance was one of the largest costs in the district. The Massena Central School District currently budgets $ 12,594,723 for health insurance.

Fic authors deserve more credit.
Story time: I started a book about 23 hours ago and just finished it. Also in that time I slept for 10 hours, spent time with family, was at work, etc. Anyway, I enjoyed the book (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda). But it felt like it flew by, so after I finished I looked up the word count because what are pages? Pages are meaningless. I only function in word counts anymore.
The estimate I found was 58,580. My immediate reaction was “oh, that’s why. That’s nothing!” But what a shitty response. Because no. That’s not nothing. That’s a whole. Damn. Book. An entire novel! And Fic authors regularly bust out 30k, 50k, 100k, 150k words. AND THEY DO IT FOR FREE. WHILE WORKING AND LIVING THEIR LIVES.
So anyway, thank your favorite fic author today because they deserve it. Because they’re amazing. They’re the MVPs.

From the PRESS RELEASE: Peggy Guggenheim needs little introduction for her contributions to twentieth-century art. Yet her formative years as a gallerist and her London gallery, Guggenheim Jeune, that she opened at the age of forty, have been relatively overlooked. Situated in a former pawnbroker’s shop at 30 Cork Street, Guggenheim Jeune operated for eighteen months between January 1938 and June 1939. While its lifespan may have been brief its influence was considerable, both on the art world at the time and on Guggenheim herself; by the time Guggenheim Jeune closed she was a self-confessed art addict. Peggy Guggenheim and London is intended as an anniversary celebration of Guggenheim as one of the first female gallerists in London and will showcase her parallel collecting interests in Abstraction and Surrealism through a display of works by Jean (Hans) Arp and Yves Tanguy.
