4 Simple Ways to Keep Allergy Season at Bay
(Family Features) With warmer outdoor temperatures, many homeowners suffer through longer allergy seasons. In fact, allergy days have increased by 20 days, according to a study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences. Being aware of air quality indexes and limiting time outdoors can lessen exposure to airborne pollutants, but indoor air quality is also a concern. In a report from the U.S.…

Paris 2024: Clearing the Air
Tumblr media
A quartet of mushroom-shaped structures tower nearly 6 meters above the Olympic Village. Known as Aerophiltres, these devices filter particulates out of the air to provide cleaner air for the Village, despite its proximity to major roadways.  (Image credit: SOLIDEO/C. A study led by researchers from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) revealed that fine particulate matter from 1980 to 2020 was associated with approximately 135 million premature deaths globally. The findings were published in April in the peer-reviewed journal Environment International. In the study, premature deaths refer to fatalities that occur earlier than expected based on average life expectancy, resulting from preventable or treatable causes such as diseases or environmental factors. The study found that the impact of pollution from fine particulate matter was worsened by climate variability phenomena such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and the North Atlantic Oscillation, and led to a 14 percent rise in premature deaths.

Moreover, according to quantum mechanics this particle-wave fusion holds for all of nature's constituents, not just electrons: protons are both particlelike and wavelike; neutrons are both particlelike and wavelike, and experiments in the early 1900s even established that light – which demonstrably behaves like a wave, as in Figure 4.1 – can also be described in terms of particulate ingredients, the little "bundles of light" called photons mentioned earlier.⁷

7. The experiments I am referring to here are those on the photoelectric effect, in which light shining on various metals causes electrons to be ejected from the metal's surface. Experimenters found that the greater the intensity of the light, the greater the number of electrons emitted. Moreover, the experiments revealed that the energy of each ejected electron was determined by the color – the frequency – of the light. This, as Einstein argued, is easy to understand if the light beam is composed of particles, since greater light intensity translates into more light particles (more photons) in the beam – and the more photons there are, the more electrons they will hit and hence eject from the metallic surface. Furthermore, the frequency of the light would determine the energy of each photon, and hence the energy of each electron ejected, precisely in keeping with the data. The particlelike properties of photons were finally confirmed by Arthur Compton in 1923 through experiments involving the elastic scattering of electrons and photons.

I saw an article that said air quality was worse in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, which is where I live, than anywhere else in the world yesterday, even worse than in Delhi, India, known for having the worst in the world. :-/  Maybe today will be better.
Edit: it looks a little better this morning.

to my chicagoan mutuals/irls: do y'all remember a couple years ago (i wanna say like. 2021-2023 but i could be mistaken) when people on twt and tiktok were doing amateur reporting on a series of corpses that had washed up out of the river? the going theory at the time was that somebody was posing as a rideshare driver and administering GHB to men coming out of clubs in river north (i remember tao was a frequent mention) and then dumping them. cause of death was never really discussed afaik but people seemed pretty sure that this was one person with a pretty consistent mo. but then there was some nebulously defined drama about one of the main infomongers on tt and then i never heard about it again. so i guess my question is: was that real? was somebody just spinning a yarn? did anything ever come of that? i don't expect the cpd to do much better than a bunch of drama aficionados on socmed who fancy themselves the second coming of colombo but i haven't heard like any news on it in years
