Here in Italy, sowing seeds gathered in America of the Asian "Boston Ivy". Common plant names crack me up. Today’s #oneadayplant is a fun late season partner for the Hedera helix ‘Buttercup’ I did a couple of days ago. Here is Parthenocissus quinquifolia (Virginia Creeper). . Like the Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata), the Virginia Creeper is a large, self-clinging, deciduous plant. On tricuspidata each leafstalk produces a single leaf, which is three pointed. Quinquifolia has a single leafstalk that has roughly 5 leaflets attached to it making for a bigger leaf. The autumn colours of oranges, purples and reds are comparable on both though. Amazing, like fire. They change from there light spring green to dark summer green quite quickly, but nowhere near as quickly as they do in turning red in autumn. Then the leaves will shed in the wind. . Thanks to my wonderful mum @carey_gal for this picture, which was taken in Falkland, Fife. . I have seen entire houses (including the roof) covered in Parthenocissus. They get big and they grow pretty quickly once settled (10m+ (30’+)). Hedera helix ‘Buttercup’ (Yellow Ivy), because it brings a bit of sunshine to a garden even on a dull day. Today’s #oneadayplant . There are a handful of species of Ivy grown in the UK with Hedera helix being the most common species (as native and commonly seen growing up tree trunks throughout the UK). While you may not love the species (I do, it is much maligned, because it is a great grower. Those that hate it are generally poor plant maintainers or have inherited a troublesomely large plant). . There are many superb and generally more compact cultivars available. . Most have a particular leaf shape and/or a clear marking to the leaf in some form of variegation. This plant differs in having its younger foliage appear bright yellow with some (irregularly) greening over time. In summer it is very yellow, in winter slightly greener. It is always pretty striking to look at though. Worth planting somewhere you want to draw attention to. I particularly like it when planted with Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston Ivy) so that the contrast between the red autumn colour of the Boston Ivy really stands out against the yellow. .
