Virginia Creeper Trail - Abingdon

Being on two wheels is part of who I am and cycling downhill brings me great joy.

We were recommended to try the Virginia Creeper Trail, in Abingdon Virginia and it didn’t disappoint.

At the end of a long working week, Richard arrived, with our bikes on the back of the car to pick me up from work and head to Virginia. Our journey of 3 and a half hours was uneventful and we arrived in time to try a popular restaurant -Rain.

Our abode for the night was simple, but perfect location. In the morning, we headed off early to the cycle shop where we picked up a shuttle to take us the hour’s journey to the top of the mountain- Whitetop station. This is where our ride would begin.

The Creeper Trail is a 34 mile trail which started as a Native American footpath used by European pioneers and the early explorer, David Boone. It then became a railroad until March 1977, when it became a Casio of the Great Depression. Nowadays, it’s a very popular downhill cycle trail enjoyed by all ages.

Our greatest mistake on this adventure was not being aware of how cold it would be. We’d both left our warm gloves behind and hadn’t put enough layers on for the brisk early morning.

As we clambered out of the minibuses and wished all the other passengers a good cycle, the cold hit us hard. We quickly hit the pedals and started our descent. It was a beautiful blue sky day and wonderful to be cycling through great scenery without having to put any effort in. We made several stops along the way to enjoy our sandwiches and tea and just soak up the views, before we hit Damascus the town at the bottom of the hill.

In Damascus, we found a great coffee stop and also some quaint stores for a quick browse. It’s only a small one street town but it was a cute place for our 17 mile break.

The second part of the trail back to Abingdon was definitely harder. No longer downhill, I was definitely more aware of each mile and was very grateful to arrive at the end. It was a great ride though and worth the tired legs.

A great Mexican meal ended our day and the following day, we enjoyed a beautiful drive back through some superb Tennessee scenery. A great weekend enjoying scenery, cycling and great food with my ❤️.
