Today’s #oneadayplant post is deliberately misleading. At 1st glance it could easily be Clematis montana ‘Alba’, then you should notice that it has 5 petals instead of 4. Choisya are known to flower well, but have lost a bit of their popularity from the 1990s-2000s. . Fortunately, most of the plants planted then are now at their zenith in terms of growth and flower power. This is the big standard Choisya ternata (Mexican Orange Blossom). . While I prefer the finer leaves forms, I do like the green-leaved over the yellow-leaves cultivars. This species is tough and robust and anything that reliably flowers in spring and then again in autumn is a winner in my book. . #evergreen #shrub #choisya #mexican #mexicanorangeblossom #flowers #spring #autumn #iplantsman #tough #plants #massesofflower #gardening #gardenista #plantingadvice #gardeningtips #gardendesign (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CApPhnTAW4S/?igshid=1xbiw2dsvibcf

Cotoneaster x suecicus ‘Coral Beauty’ #oneadayplant . Cotoneaster are one of those marmite shrubs that make excellent garden and landscape plants, but a lot of people intensely dislike. In a number of countries, especially Australia and New Zealand, there are bans in place to restrict their import as they have proven to be invasive weeds. . I like them. The are great for wildlife, especially Bees with the flower and Birds with the berries. . The name Cotoneaster is often pronounced (perhaps incorrectly) as ‘Cotton Easter’ when it is better pronounced ‘Cottone-ee-aster’. Not so important, but often said the first way by entrants to horticulture. . They clip well, the can be hacked back, they train well to shapes (especially this one), which will hug surfaces. Interesting coral-red coloured berries develop over the summer before birds get to them. This one is semi-evergreen to evergreen. Other species and cultivars may be deciduous. . #cotoneaster #plant #shrub #evergreen #iplantsman #garden #landscape #flower #fruit #berry #bees #pollinators #pollinatorplants #birds #wildlife #food #habitat #gardeningtips #plantingadvice #plantingdesign #gardendesign #gardenadvice #newzealand #australia #coral (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAZsu_GA4O9/?igshid=xgfi5answwyu

Lots of planting going on at the moment. Most of us know that some fungi can greatly harm our plants and gardens, but don’t forget the importance of some Fungi in aiding our plants establishment and overall vigour. Hedera helix ‘Buttercup’ (Yellow Ivy), because it brings a bit of sunshine to a garden even on a dull day. Today’s #oneadayplant . There are a handful of species of Ivy grown in the UK with Hedera helix being the most common species (as native and commonly seen growing up tree trunks throughout the UK). While you may not love the species (I do, it is much maligned, because it is a great grower. Those that hate it are generally poor plant maintainers or have inherited a troublesomely large plant). . There are many superb and generally more compact cultivars available. . Most have a particular leaf shape and/or a clear marking to the leaf in some form of variegation. This plant differs in having its younger foliage appear bright yellow with some (irregularly) greening over time. In summer it is very yellow, in winter slightly greener. It is always pretty striking to look at though. Worth planting somewhere you want to draw attention to. I particularly like it when planted with Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston Ivy) so that the contrast between the red autumn colour of the Boston Ivy really stands out against the yellow. . A great thing that can get large in time (6m+ (20’+)), but is unlikely to romp out of hand. . #hedera #hederahelix #hederahelixbuttercup #ivy #englishivy #buttercup #yellow #foliage #leaves #evergreen #plants #climber #climbingplants #iplantsman #garden #plantingdesign #wall #gardening #gardeningtips #plantingadvice #leaves #parthenocissustricuspidata #bostonivy #boldcolours (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFUMtq9gALl/?igshid=edyhpniz14se

The effortlessly charming Fuchsia magellanica ‘Alba’ (Hardy White Fuchisa for want of a better common name) #oneadayplant . My good friend @prince_ofplants loves blousy Fuchsias with huge flowers. He’s known for using them to great effect in planted displays @coventgardenldn. While I can see their merit and they certainly don’t disappoint in terms of colour and impact, I much prefer the subtlety of the slender flowers and all-round hardiness of the ‘magellanica’ types. . Most are red and purple flowered to a greater or lesser degree. This incredibly refined beauty is a very pale pink (almost white) and a real beauty. . Flowers for months in end, starting in May and progressing to September with certainty and generally to the first frosts. . Easy to grow, makes a good informal hedge (in time) and a decent shrub to 1.5m (5’) within 10 years. . #fuchsia #coventgarden #london #fuchsiamagellanica #fuchsiamagellanicaalba #iplantsman #plants #garden #landscape #hedge #shrub #plant #flower #pink #white #longseason #gardeningadvice #gardeningtips #plantingdesign #plantingadvice (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAXMobRATAI/?igshid=zrtr6pa4fzkq
