painted one of the animals that lives in my house…. his name is trouble and he sucks. he acts like my father in law because that’s his dog. this animal drinks beer
i think this turned out really nice, especially since i don’t do realism and i don’t do painting! as a little self-critique, i need to work on definition and saturation, and control my textures. but knowing that makes it easier to improve :o) yay
reference image and closeup below!!

Jack Russell Terriers are a tenacious and curious breed. They, along with their brother breeds the Parson Russell and the Russell, relate back to Reverend John "Jack" Russell who was a parson and a hunter in 1790. The Jack Russell is a taller and leaner version of his hunting terrier. Notable media members of the breed are Eddie from Frasier and Wishbone from PBS!
If you'd like to see the rough coat version of this artwork and four colors of both designs, visit the website! There are also links to Redbubble and Teepublic, both of which are having a summer sale! Anything on Redbubble is currently 25% off, that includes the Jack Russells and ALL my designs! Have you been wanting to do your whole bathroom in pictures of your dog? Now's your chance!

Today's Dog: The Parson Russell Terrier, not to be confused with the Russell Terrier! The primary difference between the two is that Parsons are a little bit taller, with longer legs. Jack Russell was the original name of this dog, but it was changed to match standards that diverged from the original breed in 2004. Parsons are super friendly - they bark a lot and they're quite lovely dogs! I've met a few and they've all been wonderful.
Today's Monkee: Cuddly Toy, from Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd (1967)! Written by Harry Nilsson and produced by Chip Douglas, this song is a Davy lead (he also plays tambourine). Micky sings harmony and is also on drums, Peter is on the piano and electric piano, and Mike is on guitar.

Why are secondhand books being increasingly seen as worthless?
Let me paint you a picture of what happened - (and bear in mind I'm in Yorkshire so what we call things will vary) - we arrive later than we should to the local tip (rubbish tip with an above 80% recycling rate) - they close at 5 and it's 4:42 (quite rude of us as they always have tidying up to do which is delayed by last minute arrivals) but it's okay because we haven't got much and we know where it goes - we park up to get rid of the bits of metal that have been hanging around on our garage floor - in front of us is a car with an open boot filled with books which they've already started handing over to the staff (who, with so little time to go before closing, probably weren't impressed) - "no, no, no, no, no" I say quietly as I hurriedly take my seatbelt off - I know that once something is in the hand of a staff member I can't save it - years ago the higher ups installed cameras and put a stop to a former tradition of taking pretty much anything you can easily get out of the giant containers and bringing the staff biscuits to say thank you - I don't look at what they've already passed to the staff - those books are gone and I can't save them - there's no time for a conversation about how you can't keep everything, how I love books and hate to see them thrown away, how I'd happily take any books off their hands that they didn't want and they could have my number, there was no time to think - I rush over and, in as friendly a manner as I could, though probably sounding very panicked, and in the hope they wouldn't think I was taking advantage of them, I say "can I take these to charity shop for you?" They reply "we took the good books to charity shop but you're welcome to see if there's anything you want, the rest will be tipped" - flustered by how rushed everyone around me seems to be, I immediately pick up something which I can tell by the cover is very old - it's a textbook published in 1929 (in excellent condition except for a bunch of charming scribbles) and they get an idea of what I'm looking for - they stop handing books to the staff and begin passing me anything old or hardback, which I bundle into my arms without inspection and then pass them to my mum to bundle into our car while I rummage through the others for subjects that interest me or my brother, knowing I don't have the time to save them all without making the staff late clearing up and going home, embarrassing my mum in the process as she knows several of them (lived locally all her life) - soon enough my poor mum is begging me to stop and I have to go - we drive round to put our gardening rubbish in the allotted container and then go home, knowing I have condemned many of the rest of the books to the shredder - the tip send what is sellable to a local charity but these two idiots with a boot full of books casually mentioned that some of them were damaged because they'd been throwing them down the stairs, because they didn't think it mattered as they were going to be thrown away anyway 😭 - they clearly had no idea about the charity the tip worked with so, as far as they were concerned, everything they brought was headed for the shredder or landfill
I'll always think of what I should have said - "would you mind giving me the books because I can't stand to see them thrown away?" - they probably would have said yes - once I'd started looking through them there wasn't time to move them all, but there might have been if we moved them without looking through them - it was all so rushed I couldn't think straight - maybe it would be better if I'd never known anything about it but then all the books would be gone 😭
I saved 29 books - among them, all deemed worthless by their previous owners, books that were antique, vintage, recent and very recent in several genres covering engineering, plants, gardening, cooking and history, most of them in good or great condition and barely read, 2 with sun faded dust covers and a few others a little battered (likely after being thrown down the fucking stairs) - I'm awestruck by the words 'we took the good books to charity shop' - words like those bother me in general as people took the time to organise, write, illustrate, publish and publicise these books so, unless there is something outwardly and inwardly offensive about them, it's nothing short of insulting to label them as 'good books' and 'bad books' - in this case though, I can't logically understand how they were classifying what was good or bad - the books I brought home were very old or charming or interesting or all 3 and, as previously mentioned, were in mostly great condition (others would have been too if treated better in the 24 hours before I saw them) - how would you otherwise define 'good books'? And why are brand new books so highly prized, so sanctified, while second hand books are treated as dirty or worthless? Don't get me wrong, I love the feel and smell of a brand new book - my eyes shine for hardbacks and special editions of my favourite stories but, equally, if I see a second hand book I like I'll take it home and love it like all the others - that can't be odd sentiment and yet I keep seeing casual disregard, approaching disgust, for second hand books, though this was the most extreme case I've seen personally
Not related but, oddly enough, I feel like that last bit would make just as much sense if I were talking about dogs 🤔 (adopt don't shop 💗 🐕 🐈 💗) - that genuinely didn't occur to me until I was finishing writing that rant - here's a picture of the Jack Russell we adopted that we lost to lung cancer in 2017 - his name was Snoop and he was a genius and perfectly disobedient
And below is our Shih Tzu named Gemma, who we rescued from a family member - my great aunt who adored her was dying and we promised to look after Gemma because her daughter, my aunt, was going to take her to a shelter - Gemma has anxiety issues and followed Snoop, who radiated confidence, absolutely everywhere - Gemma is still with us and she's nearly 17 now (yes, the photo is appropriate - Shih Tzus are no joke 😅)

Number 210, the Parson Russell Terrier. The breed was created by vicar John (Jack) Russell (1795-1883) in Great Britain, which is the breed's homeland. The goal was all along to improve the hunting characteristics without attaching too much importance to any uniform breed type.
