i wanna hate this but it’s honestly cohesive and plays off her og design well. making a pirate theme from the scaly texture of her suit + her eyepatch was a good move i’m afraid. i love when they do things w rose’s hair, the braids aren’t crazy different or anything but they’re cute. not rly feeling the skirt but i do like the gaudy choker/belt/garters

2) barbara gourdon

rly simple but classic-looking. not much to say besides that i love the aviator style going on. also babs belly button piercing, hello??

idrk anything abt her except that @thwackk loves her, but i think it adds some variety to the other pinup looks. a romper would’ve rly brought this up a notch tho. also she has some office romance thing going on w that scientist lady apparently, so that’s a plus

IT IS SO DIFFICULT FOR ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM 😵‍💫 I have a lot of thoughts abt the two since they're the most recent songs Danny (er Fox Szn) has released...

Both Nepo Baby and Last Night are incredible comedy songs, while Nepo Baby is centered around a comedic theme, Last Night is a genre parody of 2010s recession pop and both are executed SO WELL.

Nepo Baby is also extremely catchy and the punchlines in the song are SO perfect the way he builds them up before executing them is 👌!! Last Night does a great job of over exaggerating the typical 2010s pop theme of "living tonight like its our last night" and incorporating party themes/"working hard". Both are just so good I absolutely love Danny's lyricism in his comedy songs he's so talented when it comes to writing funny and catchy comedy music 🥰

Sorry for rambling but all in all I'd have to pick Nepo Baby cuz I have 5k plays for the song and it's the best thing Danny's ever written (Last Night is def right next to it tho the genre parody is 🥰💕)

Great Gundam Project: almost done with their 0079 episodes and it's so funny to hear how confused and surprised they are that Newtypes don't get mentioned until the last 10 episodes. also, once again, hearing them talk about Char reminds me that I miss seeing Char on my television screen :/

Palisade: once again it was crazy good this week. shout out to fucked up dream sequences/visions of alternate futures, gotta genuinely be one of my favorite storytelling devices

listening (music): MakeDamnSure by Taking Back Sunday, which is going on my Partizan/Palisade playlist for Balence reasons

Imperial Uncle: got to more fun reveals that make the main relationship a lot tastier and more fun. still having a good time with this one

The Death I Gave Him: part of the appeal of this book for me (other than that I love Hamlet & Hamlet retellings) is the romance with the sentient lab AI. this should shock absolutely no one (at least no one who knows me as the Sokrates/Integrity guy lol) but I'm real into stuff that explores like, how intimacy works when you don't each have your own separate bodies

A Power Unbound: also started & finished something I've been looking forward to, A Power Unbound by Freya Marske, the third book in a romance/historical fantasy trilogy (different main characters for each) set mostly in Edwardian England. I've enjoyed the other books in the series, and I enjoyed this one too (though I think I prefer the other two for reasons that probably don't have to do with the actual quality of this book and have more to do with what I like & don't like in a main relationship, and actually it's a testament to how strong the writing was that the relationship worked for me anyway, because it did feel earned in terms of both characterization & themes, even though it's the sort of relationship dynamic that I tend to be hesitant about because I often see it done very badly in fanfic in ways that do a disservice to the personalities of both characters involved). anyway. my actual review is that I love fucked up magic houses and there are several of those in this book so shout out to that, and one of the main characters is extremely my type (short, angry, hates the aristocracy, etc)

watching:

I'm in Love with the Villainess: we're caught up now, and I do love class conflict even if I'm sure it's going to be incredibly simplistic and silly because that's the show this is (which I am fine with, to be clear, this is a romance anime based on lovingly parodying otome games, I am treating it with the same kind of seriousness that I would treat something like Scum Villain)

Bakeoff: I'm glad that this year they seem to be better about not putting way too much weight on the showstopper and sometimes deciding star baker based on other challenges like. finally some respect for people who do really well in the signature!!

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: I mean. I've been posting through it about this one so I don't think I have any new insights here just. man. I love it when a major character death is done really well. what a show (positive)

Gundam Seed: you may, at this point, be asking why Seed is our next Gundam after finishing ZZ, especially when every week I talk about pining for Char. the answer is because my roommate watched some of it a while ago and wanted to revisit it, and also because we're saving Char's Counterattack for when we get really desperate for Gundam that isn't Seed. anyway. Seed is fun so far!

the above description of Gundam Seed was written a few days ago when we first started but before we got to the info dump about what's up with Coordinators & Naturals so I'm editing this to say: oof. it really is like what if someone took all of the parts of the original Newtype stuff that I was most skeptical about, took out all of the metaphorical stuff from Zeta that redeemed the concept for me, and then explicitly added literal eugenics. don't like that!

the other thing about Seed is the misogyny which like. god. at least the misogyny in Zeta felt more interesting to think about. at least it felt like Tomino was saying things about gender even if I didn't always like it. this is just peak early 2000s misogyny where everyone including the writers hates women so much that every man comes across as incredibly gay because their relationships with other men are treated so much more seriously

at this point you might be asking what I actually like about this show since I've been complaining for several paragraphs and the answer is I love it when childhood friends end up on the opposite sides of a war. also, a lot of Seed feels like it's trying very hard to Be A Gundam Show (for better or worse tbh, I can feel myself being marketed to, I can practically hear Bandai being like, hey remember how cool it is when a blue-and-white mobile suit fights a pinkish-red mobile suit, don't you want to buy some models), and I am not immune to classic Gundam shit like "oops these kids are involved in a war now because the military was developing a top-secret superweapon right next to where they live" and "your lives are at risk and/or you might get arrested for trying to protect your friends because the higher-ups are incompetent/selfish/do not care about you." I am also not immune to squads of edgy anime boys, or giant robots that each have their own special weapon/power, or whatever the fuck Le Creuset's got going on. I love him. I still miss Char and he's not quite filling that void but I do love him

another session of my Blades in the Dark campaign, based on the image below (from here). the crew was asked to get the sea serpent to go away and leave ships alone, and absolutely no one was surprised that the secret actual mission was to protect the sea serpent (a baby one) from the coast guard who were going to try to make it leave but more violently because we're playing Blades like it's a game about befriending creatures (see also: Missy is currently trying to resocialize a former fighting goat and Xiao Yun collects extremely fucked up birds)

Ace Attorney 5: not very far into the trial but man. sorry for falling for the trilogy nostalgia but I love to have Edgeworth as a prosecutor, I love the energy that he and Phoenix have, I'm such a sucker for defense attorney & prosecutor working together to find the truth and also they're in love

making: vaguely spanakopita-inspired stuffed pastry wreath. we made it once before and put too much extra vegetable in that released too much water while it was baking so the dough just straight up did not cook. we did it better this time! the dough is actually baked! (it's store-bought crescent rolls, we did not make the dough). anyway. there's spinach and mushroom and herbed goat cheese in there, and it's tasty

drinking: the grocery store had peppermint bark creme liqueur, and it's pretty good in hot chocolate

writing: continued to pick away at a zine fic, figured out what I want to write for my Nirvana in Fire exchange fic, and also did a little bit more on the Integrity fic that I've been working on. it has been a minute since I've written an action scene huh

OKAY LET'S GO!!! First off, I think that Dawn has always had a 1989 vibe to me. 1989 is sonically one of my lesser favorites honestly, but I think it's intriguing because it's this super poppy, mainstream hit after hit album but it's also just so deeply... unsure, in some ways. You've got shake it off and blank space, pop hits but also hits that are very acutely self-deprecating in the way that they try to come off as unbothered. It's parody but at her own expense, making fun of her own image and portrayal. Dawn is very bright and cheery but is also this very self-unsure, nervous individual in my interpretation of her and I think that parallels nicely. We open with welcome to new york, which makes me think of Dawn's contest debut! Dawn was very intentional in becoming a coordinator, rather than May who kind of stumbled into it. "Everybody here wanted something more" just makes me think of her ambition. So: Dawn, 1989. Big debut into her profession (pop debut, contests), very self-aware but tries to brush it off, but still a very bright and fun person.

Gary: does monologue song count LMAO. Joking, I think Red. Upbeat and loud and self-assured at first (22, I knew you were trouble), but you dive down deep and see that the seemingly shallow pool is actually a huge ocean of a character/album that will stand long beyond its time and cement itself as a fan favorite. I think Holy Ground really fits him, though I cannot for the life of me explain why. However, the cockiness /affectionate of I Bet You Think About Me fits him SO WELL!!! Also. "I'll be summer sun for you, forever".

Misty: Debut. Classic, the OG, might burn your house down, unhinged teenage girl energy. Hates that STUPID OLD PICKUP TRUCK YOU NEVER LET HER DRIVE. She's energetic, loud, and a trailblazer for all the albums and pokegirls to come. Starting off with a BANG and a banjo. Not much else to say, just pure iconic energy (but with a soft side!!! secretly a HUGE romantic).

Drew: Okay, a weird one. I almost went Evermore (introspective to almost a fault, way too in his own head, a dreamer in his own way and a timeless romantic) but ultimately I think my interpretation of Drew is just SO reputation. Cold on the outside, but the most romantic, soft interior once you get to know him. Drew also is a famous coordinator and has his own fan club (in canon, consisting of moms who have merch of him for... some reason, which. shoutout to the discord friends that have dubbed it the milf club- or was that my fault???? that might have been a taylorism [me taylor lol, not swift taylor]) BUT ANYWAYS Rep explores themes of finding love in crowed places which I tend to lean into in contestshipping fics and ideas, themes of avoiding fame and finding that balance of letting people in versus shutting them out. Also, you either love him or hate him, I've noticed, much like reputation. He comes off a bit offputting at first and people tend to write him off as annoying before they get to know him (cough, first tracks of rep are not at all indicative of rep as a whole BUT FUCKING SLAP ONCE YOU GET THE VIBES!) Also because I will defend both of them until death.

May: I was stuck between a LOT for my favorite girlie. I know you have her as lover which is SO PERFECT but i think anime may specifically feels very fearless/speak now. I went with Fearless, but it could go either way with a brief shoutout to Red who almost made it. Fearless is kind of in her own little world, lost in thought, a dreamer who is still figuring it all out. But like May, Fearless has some spunk, too! I think specifically Tell Me Why reminds me a LOT of May and Harley's rivalry. "You took a swing, I took it hard, and down here from the ground I see who you are". Minus the romantic part of it, it reminds me SO SO SO much of Harley's supportive act and then turning on her, back and forth. Fearless is naive, and so is May. "And I know that you see what you're doing to me- tell me why!" I think ultimately though, Fearless is finding her way. Fearless is in new territory, making her own path as a dreamer and an optimist. Also, just entirely nostalgic. I saw Fearless in concert as a kid and May has always been my favorite, just very nostalgic for me for both of them.

Iris: Speak Now! Spunky. A little outta pocket. Would probably call you out for marrying a shitty person in the middle of your own damn wedding. Purple. I still don't have an amazing grasp on Iris, but Speak Now is THAT BITCH who SPEAKS HER MIND whether it's THE TIME FOR IT OR NOT and I think that feels very Iris to me in the best way. Iris is not afraid, she's here to be heard, but she's also just. soft. baby. friend.

Paul: Okay, weird one here. Paul has... issues. Problems. I think that in an ideal world we get a paul redemption and he was written a bit differently, and I think that Paul could have his Midnights era, very retrospective and kind of looking at things that went wrong in the past and figuring out how to move on from that. Not an album or Taylor, technically, but Renegade by Big Red Machine ft. TS fits, I think. "Are you really gonna talk about timing in times like these? Let all your damage damage me? Carry your baggage up my street?" The ultimate song of 'hey, maybe deal with your issues please so I can make you the blorbo I want you to be'. /joking but also not really. Quite literally, "is it insensitive of me to say, get your shit together so I can love you?"

Tracey: Folklore. Soft, gentle, would comfort me while I'm crying at 2 am, would bake cookies with me. Simple as that. "When I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite". I stand by Folklore and Evermore being the albums for people who think they don't like Taylor Swift btw, random side note. I think also, Tracey has this bright imagery with his art, and so does Folklore. Folklore is a very imagery-driven album in its lyrics. It's evocative- I think the biggest examples of this are Invisible String, Illicit Affairs, and Hoax. I'll just close my eyes to those songs and let my mind wander off... which, admittedly, also happens during some orange islands/johto episodes and most of the diancie movie, but you know what I mean lol. They're still a GREAT vibe.

OK SO the plot of dndads ..... so its a dnd actual play podcast (you can probably tell from the title) and the first season's plot follows four dads - ron stampler, a sort of pathetic and confused stepdad, henry oak, a hippie nature guy, darryl wilson, your archetypal football-coach type dad guy, and glenn close, a rock-and-roller with less than great parenting choices - who are transported from our world to the forgotten realms and have to try and get their missing kids (terry jr stampler lark oak-garcia sparrow oak-garcia grant wilson and nick close) back and find a way to get back to their home dimension. next season follows the children of the kids from the last season - scary marlowe, a goth girl who HATES her stepdad terry, normal oak-swallows-garcia, a mascot kid who everyone thinks is a freak, lincoln li-wilson, a homeschooled boy who loves soccer, and taylor swift (not that one!!!!), a survivalist weeb - who are attempting to save their world from an eldritch being that was summoned at the end of the previous season . overarching themes of generational trauma and family and what it means to be a father throughout (:(:(:

I just watched/listened to Daniel Thrasher's "Igowallah". (Otherwise titled, "How rap sounds to non-english speakers".)

It got me thinking about music and linguistics shit.

On the one hand - this kinda makes me think of Adriano Celentano's "Prisencolinensinainciusol" and Neil Cicierega's "Word Disassociation" in that it's meant to be gibberish. Tho I think the fact Celentano had a bit more of "a point" since he was Italian (presumably ESL), making a song blending phonemes in how he crafted that song. Just to grab this blurb from the wiki article:

The song is intended to sound to its Italian audience as if it is sung in English spoken with an American accent, however the lyrics are deliberately unintelligible gibberish with the exception of the words "all right".[8][9]... Celentano's intention with the song was not to create a humorous novelty song but to explore communication barriers. The intent was to demonstrate how English sounds to people who do not understand the language proficiently. "Ever since I started singing, I was very influenced by American music and everything Americans did. So at a certain point, because I like American slang—which, for a singer, is much easier to sing than Italian—I thought that I would write a song which would only have as its theme the inability to communicate. And Neil's song also has a lovely, vaguely "fluent aphasia" sort of feeling. But like. Some of the strange couplings of the nonsense strings of actual words conjure surreal as hell imagery. Like what the hell even is, "My elusive hula yellow sketching creamy helium gentlemanly communique"?? ?

I don't really know what was like, the artistic intent behind Thrasher's song here - besides some kinda of parody of rap. Which I guess is fine? It is kinda of interesting - in comparing it w/ Adriano and Neil.

I'm just kinda iffy about some folks just being snobs about rap in the comments of it, man. It feels like this veers a bit dangerously close to how White people can mock Chinese (and Cino-adjacent) speech. Just because of the, well, distinctly Black American roots hip hop has.

As someone who probably has mild language processing issues with lyrical content anyways (so i typically first pay attention to instrumental/production elements), but also enjoys hip hop regardless... people just going off abt how that's just what rap sounds like to English speakers. Just gives me a bit of the ick? (Especially with me realizing that maybe, just maybe, hating on disco being popular was at least partially fueled on by antiblack attitudes... sooo...)

Can't really glean or comment on intent here (not really that familiar w/ Thrasher as an entertainer, so I'm trying to be charitable) - just commenting on some of the feedback I've seen there. Also also, just as a bit of writing care (like in art, not like casual txt conversation) - it's worthwhile to check if a key-smash bit of gibberish isn't some kind of obscure slur in a different language, just as a show of good faith. Because man, this song almost sounded like it was at least flirting with that mistake. (Just an experience I've seen from the larger writing community on world-building stuff.)

Basically there are things I do legitimately enjoy about this song that I got recc'd. There's some fascinating linguistics and art philosophy conversations to be had here. But there's also a just some background reservations I just wanted to ramble about.

So, your argument is “she didn’t mean to write a deconstruction of an Isekai, therefore it isn’t one”?

First of all, death of the author. I’m not a fan of bringing up the author in discussions of fan interpretation because it details the discussion to “what did the air tho explicitly say” vs “what the story is actually about”

But even then, indulging you, she said she didn’t create an Isekai, she created a story about libraries.

Rarely do authors go into a story knowing what they want it to be. Rarely do they deconstruct with the explicit intend to do as much.

I don’t think people who created Princess Tutu go “I want to write a deconstruction of fairy tales” they wanted to create a story where they explore themes of ballet and love - which lead them to include fairy tales, which led them to talking about them and what it means to us as humans

I don’t think someone thought “I want a deconstruction of a shoujo” when writing Nozaki Kun. I think they wanted to write a silly romance story and they ran with it.

And to be honest? I don’t think someone in Madoka said “I want to write a deconstruction of magical girls” I do believe someone wanted to write a more serious magical girl story (like it’s a or tutu) but they stumbled upon making things realistic

Likewise, I believe Miya Kazuki wanted to write a story about books, took the Isekai context and made it as realistic as possible. Making both the Isekai setting and the book setting, a realistic interpretation of both things.

I don’t think she lives in a bubble, and she likely (with how much she likes to read) had already read or seen a lot of /webnovel/ Isekai. From which she took inspiration for creating her own setting.

Again, noble society, Royal academies, magic and SPECIFICALLY the “Saintess” narratives are part of the Isekai Shoujo collective. They’re staples, they have become tropes that many even parody.

She couldn’t have incorporated them if she didn’t know (at the VERY least through osmosis) that they were Isekai elements.

So, yes, her intent was never to make “a deconstruction of an Isekai novel”

It was to create a realistic story about books - but chose an Isekai setting. Therefore, choosing to make realistic the Isekai tropes she knew. She engaged with them in a critical eye. Not with the “intent of deconstructing”, but just grabbing the Isekai canvas and wanting it to be as close to reality as possible “for the sake of a story about books”

And I don’t like doing this, because it’s basically running headcanons with what authors /meant/ to say.

But I already showed you textual proof FROM THE BOOKS that it’s a deconstruction.

NOT THAT I DONT LOVE THE CAMP COMEDY OF THE F13 FRANCHISE OFC but if they ever do a more serious take, i think we could dive a lot deeper than "he kills for his mom" and get into "he was a traumatized + disabled child who was isolated for decades and returned upon the death of the only person who had ever treated him like a human being" without exploiting his hydrocephalus for shock value, and even then we have to explore the parent/child dynamic of any mother and disabled kid like. on the one hand obv pamela was his world and he was hers, and she loved him more than life itself, but on the other hand theres a very bitter story to be told abt "disability parents" (autism moms i.e.) and overbearingness vs actual love and care, if we choose to take that route. BEYOND THAT, moving back to adult jason, his story is really one of like i said grief and trauma processing and the lengths to which we'll avenge those we love; would love to see ppl discuss his mentality as much as michael myers, for ex, and get into the nitty gritty of - how much violence is too much violence. how much of him is a righteous force of nature and how much is a son lashing out in the name of the only warmth he ever knew. when did it stop being about pamela - did it ever? was he still thinking of her in new york, in space, etc, and when we say that he was, was he thinking of her and avenging her in terms of operating on his own free will or by her order as a voice in his head (which, again, is definitely a method of processing trauma)?

jason being an emotionally complex killing machine instead of just a mama's boy gives us SO much for discussion but ALSO: on the flip side, we need to acknowledge that just bc hes more sympathetic than lots of other villains doesnt make him any less of a murderer. he's still very much a nasty and ruthless guy, no amount of trauma can excuse that lmao, and i'd love to see more content for him being like. fucked up and insane in da brain and straight up brutal yknow? like at the end of the day as much as it IS abt pam, it's also just abt corpses in the woods and being stalked through the trees and axes at night when the phone lines are cut! it's abt HORROR as much as it is abt family and if we're moving away from the nigh-parody takes we've come to expect, then we should go scary just as much as we go emotionally complex. THATS the equilibrium we gotta maintain: only make jason as deep as he is frightening, and vice versa, because these two aspects of his character contribute to one another so fundamentally!! if you are going to explore his character as a vessel for trauma (which u should!!), then emphasize the fact that hes gone batshit with it and is completely no holds barred!!

ultimately i think jasons not just a big gentle giant like fans like to think and NEITHER is he a mindless killing machine; f13 content should be abt exploring his grief as it relates to the extreme violence he inflicts and if anything should strive for a core theme of catharsis, bc when it boils down to it, what is catharsis in this case but violence for the sake of grief?

also i think freddy krueger is a funny guy and his character needs no expanding on whatsoever lol

uhmmm idk abt art bc my tablet's kinda wack but I can share headcanons!!!

- yolko was made from yakko's ink! an animator drew her using it, so yolko is technically yakko's biological daughter.

- yolko was made to add interest to the animaniacs reboot, since there aren't that many side characters now. she has her own segment where she cooks food and repeatedly talks about eggs.

- her special interest is eggs. she wrote a song called "yolko's egg", which is an egg-themed parody of "yakko's world".

- yakko had no idea his ink was used to make yolko, so at first he was pretty freaked out about it. but he grew to love yolko, and treats her like a daughter now.

- wakko and dot are the chaotic uncle and aunt. they spoil yolko a lot, and are absolutely bad influences on her. she learned swears thanks to dot.

- yolko loves yakko's educational songs. she likes singing along!

- yolko is 5 years old! a little babie
