OTD in Music History: Legendary composer Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883) watches proudly as brilliant Jewish-German conductor Hermann Levi (1839 - 1900) leads the world premiere performance of Wagner’s final opera, “Parsifal,” at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus during the 2nd Bayreuth Festival in 1882. It is an artistic triumph, and a fitting capstone to one of the greatest careers in music history; just six months later, Wagner would die in Venice from a massive heart attack. Wagner had actually conceived of “Parsifal” way back in 1857, but he didn't find the time to begin composing music for it until 1877. As a result, “Parsifal” was the only opera that Wagner wrote with the acoustics of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in mind; when he sat down to start composing it, he had just finished inaugurating his beloved custom-built theater with the 1st Bayreuth Festival (which featured the world premiere of his epic operatic quadryptich, “The Ring Cycle”). The 2nd Bayreuth Festival -- which boasted the world premiere of "Parsifal" -- was delayed until 1882 for financial reasons; the 1876 Festival had been an unalloyed critical success, but it proved to be a devastating commercial failure. In an effort to ensure high attendance at future iterations, Wagner decreed that the Bayreuth Festival should hold an absolute monopoly on *all* productions of “Parisfal” for thirty years, until 1913. Perhaps not surprisingly, however, this decree proved difficult to enforce in practice... and the Metropolitan Opera in New York shamelessly broke the embargo by staging an unauthorized production in December 1903. (The first *authorized* production staged outside of Bayreuth began on New Year's Eve 1913 at 11:30 a.m. in the Teatro Liceu of Barcelona. To this day, “Parsifal” remains by far the most frequently performed work at the Bayreuth Festival.) Pictured: A c. 1910 real photo postcard, showing an elderly Wagner as he would have appeared around the time of the world premiere of “Parsifal " in the early 1880s.

endlessly amused by the height comparison of these three
(lavius) elyria is tit height on parisfal. they are both fully grown men. elyria is just a different kind of avian and thusly is fucking Tiny. zenith couldve been any height he wanted but he decided it would be funny to be shorter than parsifal and it stuck. parsifal is freakishly tall in reference to everybody else in the town he's from

Take a Break 14.2
Setting: AU where T’Challa loves Reader, But is married to Nakia. Both of the women he loves try to convince him to take a break.
Warnings: let down, hurt, angst, weird stories,Bees, slight mentions of death (not a main character).
A/N: I hope y’all enjoy, I’m gonna be tagging in comments in hopes that more people get notified.
“That’s a new ring,” Shuri quipped from the otherside of the examination room. You sat, absentmindedly rubbing your stomach as you waited for the king to arrive. He was currently ten minutes late, but so was Dr. Mayre. Your hand stopped abruptly as she pointed out the addition. You glanced at the ring as Shuri called again.
“Are you alright?” Shuri asked as you snapped out of your daydream. “Yeah, I’m good.” Sighing, you glanced at your watch once more. “You never answered my question,” the teen repeated as she moved to sit on the examination table with you. “T’Challa gave it to me a few months ago.” you explained pulling the ring off of your finger. You handed the small silver band to the scientist and smiled as she studied it.
“Me ware wo, for marriage?”she questioned as she fingered the small circles. “Yeah, it is supposed to be a promise. That he wants to marry me.” you clarified. “Why are you just now wearing it?” she exclaimed, holding it up to the light once more.
“I was not sure if I was ready to wear that declaration, when he gave it to me. To be honest, I’m not sure if I am ready to be wearing it now-” you began as Queen mother rushed through the door. “I am so sorry I am late. I lost track of time with the gardeners and-” she froze as she looked around the room. She silently counted the occupants of the room.
“Where is Okoye? T’challa? Dr.Mayre?” she raised an eyebrow. “ Dr.Mayre is delivering the first baby of the day. Okoye was called away to solve a border dispute. And the king, has not yet made his debut.”Shuri rolled her eyes as you resumed rubbing your stomach. “He is over fifteen minutes late. He knows it was at 8 right?” Ramonda asked as she settled into one of the plush chairs in the royal birthing room.
“I told him last night, but it may not exactly have been clear.” you murmured. “What do you mean, it ‘may not’ have been clear?” Shuri gaped. “Well, we were in the middle of an argument-“
“You two just stopped fighting! Isn’t there a rule about going to bed angry?” Shuri depanned. “For married couples,” you scoffed, “Maybe we just work better apart,”you frowned. “Now we both know that, that, is not true.” Queen Ramonda chastised. “But Queen Mother. It seems like every few weeks we start fighting again.”
“You both need to work on communicating with each other. Calmly tell me what happened last night,” it was a command more than an offer. “We had dinner with Nakia and her boyfriend. D’Ajuh-”
“You met the boyfriend?”Shuri pouted. “I never get to meet anybody.”
“And you will get over it,” Queen mother dismissed the young scientist. Gesturing at you she smiled. “ T’Challa became overly possessive and jealous. Started being annoying and showing off,”
“Isn’t he always.” Shuri joked. You smiled before continuing, “he made this stupid remark that bothered me more than it probably should have,”
“What did he say,” Ramonda interjected softly. “That is the point of communicating, lay everything out on the table.” She explained, gesturing for you to continue.
“I told him I didn’t want to be carried around while D’Ajuh was here. I said he could carry me around once D’Ajuh left. He was upset and started saying how he thought I would have been grateful, since I’m quote on quote, always complaining about being in pain and having swollen ankles.” You rolled your eyes.
“Is that all?” Ramonda asked searching our face. Knowing she saw right through your facade, your shoulders dropped as you remembered the hurtful comment from the night before. “He said that Nakia would’ve let him do it.” You murmured.
“Come again?” Shuri shook her head as she leaned forward. “I’m just lost, it’s like nothing I do seems to be enough. And the minute it is, there is something else that I’m not “Nakia” enough at.”
“Now what you will not do is downplay yourself because my son is too bone headed to realize how he is treating you. You are not Nakia, and you never will be. He loves you because you are who you are. If he keeps trying to change you, or comparing you to Nakia, then remind him why he wants you in his life. What life is like without you.” She pointed.
“You mean she should leave him?” Shuri gasped. “If she feels that is what is best for her and her child Shuri. I am not in particularly in favor of this plan though. As the Americans say, I am simply playing ‘devil's advocate’,” Ramonda explained to the princess. “No one is going anywhere, at least for right now,” you interrupted. “At the most I may move to one of the vacation homes” you glanced back at the clock.
“Then I guess I’m just in time,” Okoye announced, gliding into the room. “It seems you will be needing a companion?” The woman frowned settling next to Ramonda, dressed in her training wear instead of uniform. “You think she should leave too?” Shuri pouted.
“I think it is a good way for kumkani to see how easily she could be gone,” The warrior clarified. “General, it is nice to see you taking a day for yourself,” The queen mother replied squeezing the warrior’s hand. “There’s no place I’d rather be,” her eyes glanced around the room.” Iphi na ke ukumkani? [ Where is the king?]” she raised an eyebrow, searching for an explanation of the man’s absence. “The appointment is not over is it?”
“It has not begun. Dr. Mayre has to deliver a baby girl-“ you started. “A beautiful baby girl. 7 pounds 3 ounces. Born Oyne Adwesa Didulo.” The lean African woman swept into the room. “I am so sorry for my tardiness. Babies have a measure of time all their own I’m afraid.” She smiled prepping the sonogram machine.
As she stood back she washed her hands then surveyed the room. “Now let’s see. Mom,Aunt,Grandmother, and god mother. Where is Dad?” She addressed those assembled.
“That’s the question of the hour,” Shuri muttered. “Would you like to start without him? Or I can give you all some more time?” The doctor offered.
“Just a few more minutes.” You asked. “Y/N, it has been almost 45 minutes.” Okoye reminded. “I know, but he promised,” you pleaded while staring at the ring on your finger. The doctor nodded her assent before walking out of the room.
Five minutes turned to ten. Ten to twenty. And twenty to forty. Soon it had been another hour. “Would you like to reschedule?” Dr. Mayre asked as tears built up behind your eyes. “No let’s do this,’You half smiled leaning back on the exam table. The African doctor glanced wearily back at Queen Ramonda.
“Are you sure darling?” The mother figure confirmed. “Yes,” you nodded as you wiped tears from your eyes. “I’ve rearranged my schedule five times for T’Challa, I won’t revolve my life around his any longer. We have more appointments to go. He can make one of those.”
“Well in that case, let’s see what’s going on.” Dr.Mayre began, raising the sonogram wand.
“Queen mother?” The older woman glanced up from her flower bed. Smiling as she noticed you standing there. She waved you closer as she sat back on her feet. “What is wrong intombazana yakho?”
“Am I stupid?” You asked moving closer. “Why do you think you are stupid?” She tilted her head, wiping her hands on her apron. “I don’t know. I just have this feeling. T’Challa got overly jealous when D’Ajuh was here. And he kept giving Nakia these looks. Then he doesn’t show up for the appointment this morning. He keeps saying nothing is going on, and that he loves me?”
“How do you feel?” She questioned, brushing loose dirt from her hands. “I feel like I keep playing backseat to his wants and needs. Like this baby. You know this was his plan and now that it’s here, he acts like he wants Nakia,” You rambled.
“My dear,” The queen grabbed your hand and walked you to a nearby bench. “Do you see my flowers over there?” She gestured to a flower bed in the distance. You nodded. “What do you notice about that flower bed,” she turned to point at another section. “That you don’t see at this one?”
You took a moment to observe both sections. “The first flower bed doesn’t have any bees, your newer one does.”
“Exactly, now the flower bed in the distance, has been there for years, every year when the bees are out they pollinate this flower bed without question. But the moment I added this new flower bed, all of my bees left the old flower bed. The one that has kept the hive alive for years.” She explained.
“Queen mother, with all due respect, what does this have to do with me?” You asked. “Men are like the bees. Every once in a while they leave their flowers in pursuit of the newest flowers.”
“This is not making me feel any better,” you groaned glancing at the flower bed in front of you. “Let me finish,” she laughed. “There’s another difference you missed. Those flowers in the bed in front of us, they only live for two months. Soon, those bees will have to go back to their old flowers. But, those flowers over there will die this year. So the bees, who are so busy chasing after my new flowers, will have nothing left to go to.” She explained, smiling in accomplishment, as you are staring in confusion.
“I still do not understand queen mother,” You shook your head. “wam umntwana [my daughter]-“ she smiled squeezing your hands. She stood and brushed the dirt off of her apron, grabbing her tools as she went. “Don’t die waiting for him to choose you.” She smiled once more, before beginning her trek back to the greenhouse.
“Don’t die?” You mumbled pushing yourself off of the garden bench. You shook the thought loose from your mind. Venturing further into the garden you heard voices and walked around to a gazebo.
“T’Challa?” You called as you noticed his silhouette in the structure. A second person jumped up from his embrace as he turned to you. “Y/N?” He started walking towards you. “Nakia?”
“It is not what it looks like,” she began. “Where were you this morning.” Your voice sliced through the air. “Y/N-“
“No T’Challa, where were you?”
“Y/N- I…” he stuttered. “It’s a boy,” you cut him off. You bit your lips to stop the quivering. “He’s healthy. Shuri thinks he’s already gotten your big head,” You laughed bitterly as tears escaped your eyes.
“Bast I hope she’s wrong.” You sniffed. “He might be a premie, the herb is causing advanced maturity. But other than that he’s fine. But you’d know this if you showed up to the appointment.”
“Your appointment was this morning?” Nakia breathed. You glanced at her through your tears. “Yeah, I knew you had a date with D’Ajuh this morning,” you offered, letting her know she was in the clear. Unfortunately T’Challa was not. “The Monday after next at 2. That’s the next appointment.” You turned your back on the king and begin walking back towards the palace.
“Sithandwa [love] wait,” the African king called as he jogged after you. “What T’Challa,” You hissed, not turning to acknowledge him. “I’m sorry.” He offered.
“Sorry means nothing without action.”
“I’ll be there. I’ll be early. I’ll meet with Dr.Mayre on my own time and get caught up.” He pleaded. You fished his sonogram out of your pocket and pressed it into his palm. He stared at the slightly wrinkled paper as you disappeared inside. Elegantly scrawled in your hand writing were two words.
Your son.

new thesis book 3 Ireland homecoming trip I'm like 95% sure will happen but it features Ronan going back in time (either deeeeep history as bryde’s story about Fintan Mac Bóchran implies) OR more recently to the Dublin fairy market that apparently happened before the DC one. (It does, after all, tell us that Bryde had just made a deep ruckus chasing after an unknown something in Ireland in CDTH.) at some point in some past he might also dream the moderators. but at the past fairy market he meets Mór o Córra, which is why she acts as if she knows exactly what’s going to happen in CDTH when she and the new feniall save him from Carmen Farooq-Lane and Parisfal. he goes to the fairy market that is somehow linked across all fairy markets and out of time and space, and that’s why the ladies in CDTH ask him how he’s already been there. and there’s a big scene in the National Gallery involving this here painting:
Caravaggio’s Taking of Christ
right now there’s a kind of loop with Bryde using the phrase thirty pieces of silver to wig out the moderators, but Ronan doesn’t think of that phrase until Declan’s betrayal of him, indicating in some way that Bryde has already seen this version of the future and Ronan will go back in time to dream him
#the dreamer trilogy#mister impossible tinhatting#mister impossible#I'm just like. I'm throwing ideas at a wall here. I am THROWING IDEAS#there's also something up with county Kerry I KNOW there is something up with county Kerry or else WHY is it in both mor o corra and niall#plotlines AND in carmen and Nathan's plotline???? and bryde??? what's going on in that one specific county??? why are carmen and Ronan so#linked like this??? why??????

This Is Now A CDTH Appreciation Day
(spoilers for Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater which you should definitely 100% go read right now I don’t care if you’ve read it before go read it again it’s wonderful)
Specifically for all the emotional bits that GET ME over a year later. Off the top of my head:
- Ronan and trying to move to Cambridge but he /can’t/ because he’s a /dreamer and this world is not for him/ and Adam loves him anyway but /he does not belong/
- Matthew,,,,Matthew my boy,,,staring out at the waters
- Okay maybe the Matthew one is more for Declan okay page 94-95 is real *gestures emotionally* for our boy Declan. Matthew staring at the water like an enchanted prince when normally he’s not prone to introspection and never stops moving, and then in the same scene Ronan starts going “Declan? What’s the Fairy Market?” and Declan’s perfectly ordered, barely-safe life just starts /crumbling around him/ and it’s so perfectly written, that moment of “fuck.” and the anxiety and fear??? Wonderful, wonderful. I’m cryin.
- Jordan having her dreamy moments too, and isn’t that tragic?? Hennessy is kinda a tragedy too; she wants to do right by her girls but she /can’t/, she can’t, and if she dies they die and she’s fairly well too /exhausted/ to properly care. Jordan just wants to live, live, live
- Parsifal. Parisfal. That is all.
I love this book so much and I could read analyses of it and the characters and the writing forever I’m sure.
Edit:
- DECLAN AND ALL OF HIS SECRETS AND HOW EVERYTHING IS A SECRET “UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE OR STOLEN FROM HIM”. THE /EMOTION/ OF THE ART ATTIC
#call down the hawk#cdth#maggie stiefvater#ronan lynch#declan lynch#matthew lynch#jordan hennesey#parsifal#TRC and TDT are my favorite series nothing can compare

Consciousness Soul: Parsifal & Amfortas
A man of our time carries within him this double nature — aspiring Parsifal, wounded Amfortas. That is what his self-knowledge must lead him to feel. Then from this recognition will flow the forces which out of duality must make a unity, and so should bring man a little further on in the course of world-evolution. In our Intellectual Soul, in the depths of our inner life, there must be a meeting between Amfortas, wounded in body and soul, and Parsifal, whose task is to cultivate the Consciousness Soul. And it is entirely true to say that in order to gain freedom for himself, a man must go through the “wounding” of Amfortas and become acquainted with the Amfortas within himself, so that he may also come to know Parsifal. Just as it was right for Egyptian times that one should rise up into the spiritual worlds in order to know Isis, so is it right for our times to start with the spirituality, the spiritual nature, of this world, and through it to rise into the higher spiritual worlds. A wish to deny the Amfortas-nature is not a true characteristic of our time. It is because modern man is so fond of surrounding himself with maya [the appearance of the material world] that he wants to deny Amfortas. For how delightful it sounds when we hear it said: “Humanity is always advancing!” Yes, but this “advance” follows a very tortuous path. And in order to develop the forces of Parsifal in human nature, the Amfortas-nature in man must be recognized.

The last sleep of Arthur by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones

Call Down the Hawk
Call Down the Hawk Book Review by Maggie Steifvater

#PYNCHISLIFE
This about sums up my feelings on Call Down the Hawk.
No, but really, I love my Raven Boys and I adore Maggie Steifvater and her world of dreamers and I was so, so, so incredibly excited to read this next installment focused on the best rugged boy Ronan and Steifvater did not disappoint.
This next trilogy in the saga, book one of The Dreamer Trilogy, is, as Steifvater says in the first line, a story about the Brothers Lynch. Which she delivers on immensely and exceptionally.
The story revolves around of course Ronan (with the additions of Chainsaw, Opal, and Gansey via telephone), his brother Declan, two girls we are introduced to named Jordan and Hennessy (among a slew of others), a Moderator named Carmen Farooq-Lane, her visionary Parisfal Bauer, and then an addition of another powerful visionary known as Lilliana.
There are some other characters sprinkled in here, Locke, two old ladies who are gruesomely murdered, the van-mom with her kids in the back who took on Lilliana the hitchhiker, the random children’s author who wants to be anything but a children's author, and….I think that’s it?
There were a lot of additional characters thrown in here actually and while Steifvater does it masterfully as always and she does well to interweave all the characters and how they relate to each other, I did get a bit annoyed.
I will be the first person to admit that this is a subjective opinion. To be honest, all I wanted was a glorified Pynch fanfiction that was canon and lovely and long and well…I didn't really get that. I didn’t assume we were actually going to be that blessed (maybe just in my most wild, ideal dreams) but Pynch (while definitely a tertiary factor) was not the main focus, and that’s truly okay because what Maggie Steifvater is doing is setting up her next trilogy and her big plot.
Which mainly boils down to this: There are people out there called Moderators who work as a secret faction of the government that are hunting down dreamers (people who dream reality into being like Ronan and Hennesey) because visionaries (people who can see aspects of the future as it pertains to dreamers) have found that there is a dreamer planning to end the world by fire and burn it to the ground.
So while dreamers like Ronan and Hennessy are innocent, the government doesn’t know that, sees them as dangerous anyways and is hunting down and assassinating all dreamers in order to stop this fiery apocalypse from killing all life.
So that begs the question: who is this dreamer that is dreaming the fiery inferno that ends the world? And why? And what is the Lace? And is Adam actually a visionary instead of the Magician? And what is happening with Aurora? And what in the world is up with Bryde?
So many questions and too little answers and too few pages for my tastes.
But Maggie Steifvater excels what she always excels at: metaphors, figurative language, magic, whimsy, relationships, characterization, and intrigue. So much intrigue. Because there are so many characters and because they’re all interesting and all fleshed out, I want to be reading their stories all the time, but they end so quick and go through a cycle that is maddening as it is enchanting.
This story was fast-paced and full of characters that I’ve loved for years (Ronan, Declan, Matthew), but also new characters that I already feel like I’ve known forever, Hennessy, Jordan, Farooq-Lane. I feel like they’ve always been here, in this Raven Boys universe, but I’ve just now been introduced to a good friend that I’ve forgotten I had.
I loved this book. And while the fangirl in me wanted more Ronan and Adam I was satisfied with what I got because the stakes are so high and the plot so steep and the new characters aren’t unnecessary additions, but instead welcome faces.
Recommendation: If you haven’t read this first installment or The Raven Cycle then what are you doing? Truly, because these books are art and they deserve to be read. Please go pick one up today, bask yourself in the glory that is a Steifvater craft and then stare off into space as you enjoy the titillating feeling of being satisfied and sated of a book well read as we wait for book two to come out.
Score: 8/10
