Mudd - In The Garden Of Mindfulness - languid grooves pack the new solo album from Claremont 56 label head
When Paul Murphy released his critically acclaimed debut solo album, Claremont 56, in 2006, many thought it would be the first of many. In a way, it was, as in the years since he’s released a string of collaborative sets alongside Benjamin J Smith (as Smith & Mudd), and as part of underground ‘supergroups’ Paqua, Bison and Hillside. But that second solo album? Well, it just had to wait. In early 2023, Murphy finally decided to scratch that itch, roping in some of his most trusted collaborators (keyboardist and bassist Michele Chiavarini, percussionist Patrick Dawes, guitarist Dave Noble and HF International’s Kashif included) to lay down a sumptuous set of tracks that not only showcases his now familiar (bit hard to pigeonhole) neo-Balearic sound, but also proves how much he has matured as a writer and producer since 2006. In The Garden of Mindfulness is richly musically detailed, expertly arranged and full to bursting with fluid instrumental solos, with Murphy and his collaborators serving up tracks that brilliantly blur the boundaries between languid jazz-funk, downtempo, vintage synth-laden krautrock, dubby grooves and sun-splashed soundscapes.

Reviews 030: Jack Cutter / Paqua / Pàscal / Studiomule
The Claremont 56 Ten Year Anniversary Box Set was a highlight of 2017 and it’s a joy returning to that well with some additional remixes by Larry Heard (Jack Cutter’s “Serpent Strut”) and Emperor Machine (Paqua’s “Ruby Running Faker”). We also check in with the latest from Early Sounds sub-label Periodica. Pàscal’s Nero Di Seppia 7” is a mediterranean soaked masterpiece in miniature, featuring two concise cuts of new age leaning ambient-funk. And best of all, Kuniyuki Takahashi, here expanding his Studio Mule imprint into a studio project, offers two exceptional updates of Taeko Ohnuki’s “Carnaval” featuring the brilliant and dreamy Miyako Coda. It’s all energetic electro/disco glory with a nostalgic and euphoric feel.
Jack Cutter / Paqua - Claremont 56 Ten Year Anniversary Sampler (Claremont 56, 2018) Complimenting his great remixes from the Claremont 56 Ten Year Anniversary Box Set, here we have Larry Heard’s “Serpent Strut (Fingers Deep Club Mix)”. The whole thing hews remarkably close to the wild earthy psychedelic feel of the original, just with a massive and hypnotic club thrust. The ultra deep kick and propulsive vibe never relent, so all the color and drama come from Heard deftly overlaying the hallucinatory guitar and David Harks’ deeply Zep-influenced vocals with sci-fi Detroit electronics. And the bass is given significant emotional power, letting loose at key transitional moments while at other times just gliding on housey brilliance. Vibed out head knodding dancefloor fire. Emperor Machine’s extended dub of “Ruby Running Faker” occupies the B-side, and is a hyperactive multi-hued odyssey. Funky acid bass and a hot and vibrant disco beat serve as foundation, allowing Emperor Machine to color the mix with all these freaked-out textures, sourced from the original song, but morphed and splintered into prismatic forms. Sometimes we head into serious psychedelic territory dominated by unhinged dub fx, other times snapping back to a tight minimal groove. At some point, we’re in a triumphant percussive gallop, synths soaring to the heavens, hand percussion bouncing around the stereo field, everything building towards an anthemic climax, sticky heatwave siren pads blazing and Quinn singing out heroically towards the infinite horizon.

Pàscal - Nero Di Seppia (Periodica, 2018) “Nero Di Seppia” starts in a dreamy cloud of vibrato effects and piercing cerebral noises. Running water and vocal new age pads add further atmosphere as buttery groovin’ bass enters, slow and low, eventually joined by an airy jammed out beat and subtle dubby guitar. It’s a total bleary-eyed ambient funk stomp, with liquid tremolo keys dropping over the mix like psychedelic rain, bass and drums locked into groovy syncopation, a chromatic fog of metallic chiming and tropical fx drifting overhead, as the bassline is occasionally embellished with deep squelchy synthesizers. On “Scogliera”, we are treated to another plodding funk beat with dirty jammy synthbass. Dreamy oceanic pads and waves of blissed out ambiance hover above the rhythm section as jazzy synth-flute solos in that soft 80’s fusion kind of way, the whole track oozing equatorial vibes. Towards the middle, we break down into a section with just drums and a kaleidoscopic array of chimes and weird sounding water samples, before building back up to the new age leaning funk groove…blue skies, crystal clear waters, white sands, balearica of the highest order.

Studio Mule - Carnaval feat. Miyako Koda (Studio Mule, 2018) The dance edit of “Carnaval” is dripping with Hi-NRG atmosphere from the outset. The bass drum hits in the center of the chest and throaty clavinet sounding bass mixes with driving Italo-sequencing. It feels like a huge victorious climax at every moment and is one of the most fist-pumping tracks I’ve ever heard. Miyako Koda’s vocals are dreamy and innocent, and recast the song as a spaced out disco lullaby once they enter. We are taken to faraway lands as she trades off hypnotic melodies with chiming dreamwave synth lines, building toward mini-climaxes of spaced out electro-majesty. Witness as well the sky-seeking midsection with flashy distorted synth solos sounding like Michael Rother’s axe, joined by percolating kraut synths, joyful and warm, hitting those Harmonia vibrations in the best possible way. The “Extended Edit” focuses in on the forceful kick and mesmeric Italo-sequencing. It is still soaring and fist-pumping, but with a little more swagger and sense of adventure. What was the jammy kraut-climax of the “Dance Edit” leads off this version in a blaze of glory, fiery solos and Düsseldorf electronics, before everything settles into a Hi-NRG hypnopulse, streamlined and minimal, allowing focus on Miyako’s siren song as it drifts through the cosmos. This edit also features an extended jam-out, the phrase “carnaval” looping over a pulsating electro-synth starglide, leading to freaky synthesizer solo madness.

C'era una ragazza.
10 febbraio
È una settinana che la vedo pallida, un po' giù. Segue a malapena e ha preso un paio di insufficienze. Continuo a chiederle come sta, ma sta bene. Forse le manca qualcuno.
19 febbraio
È raggomitolata sul banco, non riesco a capire se segua o meno la lezione, se dorma mentre è girata e dà le spalle al resto della classe. È sempre triste. Tranne a volte, quando c'è lui. Quando lui siede accanto a lei e le parla tra un'ora e l'altra oppure alla ricreazione, sembra sfoggiare dei meravigliosi sorrisi. E ride, quanto ride. È così bella quanto ride.
01 marzo
È un po' che non sorride più. Vede lui non spesso come prima, e non la vedo più sorridere. Non la vedo più felice, con l'amore negli occhi come prima. Al contrario, è sempre più pallida. Sarà il freddo, lei lo detesta.
06 marzo
Oggi è stata richiamata due volte da una professoressa per mancanza di attenzione. Non segue più, o così pare. Non interviene più come una volta, neanche nell'ora di psicologia, dove aveva sempre qualcosa da dire. Se qualcuno le parla, si limita ad annuire e, se serve, a fare uno di quei sorrisi forzati. Lui non va più da lei, non va più a parlarle. L'unica persona che la faceva stare bene, non è più con lei. Sembrano due estranei, adesso. Pare che lui preferisca passare del tempo con il resto della classe che con lei. Mi dispiace così tanto.
13 marzo
Che inferno oggi. Il compito di matematica. Nessuno, dico nessuno sapeva come muoversi su quel foglio. Lei non è mai stata brava in matematica, ma stranamente è stata la prima a consegnare, dopo 20 minuti. Poi è andata in bagno e non è tornata fino alla ricreazione. Quando ho consegnato il mio compito, ho visto il suo. Non aveva consegnato perché aveva già finito. Quel foglio era bianco. C'era scritto solo il suo nome.
22 marzo
Oggi ho visto quella ragazza giocare con un temperino. Lui, dopo tanti giorni, le si è avvicinato. Ero curiosa di vedere il suo sorriso dopo tanto tempo. E invece no, non ha sorriso. Affatto. Anzi, gli ha chiesto di rompere il temperino, e di ricavare per lei le due piccole lame. In un batter d'occhio lui è riuscito nell'impresa... ma non le ha chiesto il perché. Perché non le ha chiesto niente? Lei lo guardava negli occhi, si aspettava che lui facesse qualcosa... ma non fece niente.

È da qualche giorno che quella ragazza chiede di andare in bagno e vi ci resta per almeno dieci minuti. Nessuno le dice niente. È sempre più pallida e più magra. Lo noto perché vedo tutti i suoi vestiti andarle larghi.
28 marzo
Oggi è stato l'ultimo giorno di scuola prima delle vacanze di Paqua e lui si è fatto venire a prendere alle 11:00 dai suoi. Lui ha salutato tutti con la mano, discreto, e se n'è andato. Forse lei meritava un saluto in più. Magari un abbraccio. Magari suo. Se la vedevi, sembrava ne avesse proprio bisogno.
04 aprile
Oggi è davvero una bella giornata. Fa caldo, il sole non manca. Sembrano tutti felici. Eppure lei, su quel banco, non c'è. Brutto sentirsi male proprio all'inizio della primavera.
09 aprile
È da prima di Pasqua che quella ragazza è assente. Chissà cos'avrà. Ho provato a chiederlo a lui, ma ha detto di non saperne nulla.
15 aprile
Sono arrivata in classe e non ho capito più nulla. C'era il putiferio, un vociare assurdo, in mezzo a un misto di malinconia. Lei non c'è. Lui è appena arrivato e, come me, non ci sta capendo più niente. Tutti lo guardano un attimo. "Non lo sai?" gli domandano. "Non so cosa?..." Un attimo di distrazione e vedo lui improvvisamente impallidito, non risponde più a ciò che gli dicono gli altri. Conosco quello sguardo, lo sguardo di chi non riesce a crederci.
C'era una ragazza. C'era. E ora non c'è più.

Reviews 195: Smith & Mudd feat. Quinn Lamont Luke
The Distance is the newest 12″ single from Smith & Mudd and marks one of the only times the duo have released music outside of Claremont 56. This time around, their laid back vibes of balearic psychedelia land on Adventures in Paradise and feature the ever incredible Quinn Lamont Luke, who Mudd has collaborated with to great effect before through their Paqua project. But in contrast to the stoner funk and solar prog of Akaliko, “The Distance” has its head floating in cosmic clouds of AOR, with smooth rhythms backgrounding aching guitar layers, gorgeous piano cascades, blistering fuzz solos, and soulful voice serenades (and thus forming a kinship with Stubb’s “Love Not Sex” featuring Huw Costin and Rachel Foster). In addition to an instrumental version of the track, Adventures in Paradise have also wisely included Ron Basejam and his take is typically transformative, preserving the romantic melancholia of the original while creating a paradise disco epic in the process, replete with dashing orchestrations, enhanced vocal powers, and a reworked rhythm and bass section that seems to glide on waves of sunshine funk energy.
Smith & Mudd feat. Quinn Lamont Luke - The Distance (Adventures in Paradise, 2019) “The Distance” starts with warm and lightly distorted Rhodes chords and cosmic laser pads, as tambourines jangle and flashes of Smith’s bluesy guitar diffuse through the ether. Swelling string vapors, psychoactive dub fx, and banging pianos build emotional anticipation while cymbal taps and splashes bring in a sensual Rhodes riff and vibes of twilight magic, all while deep and physical basslines hold down the beatless groove. And then, as further palm-muted riff layers dance on glowing clouds, the smooth disco beats finally drop, with thudding kicks, soft snares, and shuffling hi-hats gliding on oceanic currents. 70’s style string orchestrations dash all around as drunk synth arps float in the sky and eventually the rhythms drop away, leaving the acoustic and electric pianos to dance alone through a balearic dreamscape. The guitar layers slowly work back in over sumptuous bassline pulsations and finally, Quinn descends upon the mix with an aura of shadowy light and heavenly songs of soul and grace. It’s so breathtaking…so magical…as this emotional angel sings out powerfully above a wonderland of AOR and slow motion disco. And if that wasn’t enough, the track eventually erupts as B.J. Smith lets loose a guitar solo that ascends to Floydian heights of emotive space rock perfection. And towards the end, as the six-string fuzz waves wail away, so does Quinn, blasting out a melodious “I NEED IT” refrains as the tender grooves ride towards a sunset horizon.

The original and instrumental mixes of “The Distance” are more or less the same until the extended rhythmic drop out, for without the entrance of Quinn’s vocals here, the the second half of the song works instead as a build towards the explosive guitar solo and its waves of classic rock majesty flowing down from the heavens. Then in Ron Basejam’s remix, the heat and humidity are turned up considerably as fantastical dreamscapes of symphonic strings surround e-piano descents, strands of chiming silver, and interstellar satellite communications. We then drop down into a smashing disco beat anchored by chugging basslines, with Quinn’s powerful voice flashing in right away. Bubbling Rhodes riffs support the vocal flows and their stories of hardship and togetherness while orchestral stabs of classical disco brilliance occasionally float above the fantasy groove. The “I NEED IT” vocal climax from the original is here repurposed as an epic chorus that is supported by funky palm muted riffs and ecstatic strings rushes before giving way to B.J.’s ripping fuzz solo, hitting as hard as ever as it rides on the romantic rhythms and hypnotic Rhodes riffscapes. As the beats pull away, massive piano waterfalls merge with thrilling string melodies and heady echo riffs before it all climaxes with a blinding fusion-style synth solo that lets loose vibes of sunset beauty and luscious jazz majesty…climbing higher and higher through crystal cloudrealms. And before the track fades away on ambient currents of wonderment, Ron cuts back to the verse for one last taste of Quinn’s intoxicating spells of unity and love.
