Day Brief - paper play

After looking at what sort of mediums artist and designers use, it made me think what I can achieve with paper. At first I thought about creating a message or using paper to create some sort of image, however I wanted to keep it simple yet effective. I focussed on creating words instead of a sentence. 

Without really thinking about what I was doing and stressing about if it worked or not I noticed I was creating these 3D origami shapes. 

Again, I didn’t worry too much if the parts didn’t go together or what I was doing as I knew that a few more shapes I would be able to create some sort of pointy, triangular, 3D letter. 

After creating 3 shapes, I was testing out different layouts and seeing what felt right to me. I kept changing the layouts and saw that within each shape and line there were outlines of letters coming out.

After testing out different layouts to my letter, I found that this first layout worked well with the bigger shapes.

I started to create smaller shapes as i wanted to also experiment with size along with colour, shape, lines and contour.

Before putting my final design I created smaller letters with the shapes I had created. The picture above shows the letter ‘V’.

This is my final outcome. I really like how the letter ‘T’ stretches down. I felt that it looked right but wanted to add more sharpness and edge to my work.

I added the final shape to the letter. It was hard to keep it in place so if I was to do this task again, I would stick down the shapes onto the paper.

I really liked my final outcome as it was simple yet effective. The colours are playful and there is more to the design as you start to focus on the folds, contours, lines and shapes.

What did I learn from this exercise?

What can I improve?

If there was more time, I would of created a word. i feel that I couldn’t do this at the time as I was testing ideas by chance.

Photograph my letter in the dark to capture light and shadows.
