The Sports, Karting, And Party games Are Canon.
So something people often do is claim the spinoff games are not canon to what is considered the main games, let alone to each other. So this post is here to provide the evidence they are canon.
First off for confusion about character portrayals in these games click here.
So first off, I have had people claim that Nintendo said that the spin-offs aren't canon. A source I was never provided with. Such a claim always throws me off given Nintendo seems to always treat the spin-offs as canon. On the about section for Mario on the Nintendo Website. The about says this "You may know him as a famous plumber, but he’s also a kart racer, sports star, caped hero, and more!" As for Mario's description on the website it says, "Mario excels at sports including tennis, golf, baseball, soccer, and even kart racing. He's good at all of them! He's a plumber by profession but is really a jack of all trades." Note how it doesn't say it's a different Mario but rather refers to Mario as the same person doing all these things. Calling him a jack of all trades, keep that last one in mind it will come up again. In addition to this Peach's description says "Princess Peach is always game for a variety of sports, and also enjoys baking and cooking." The Encyclopedia says "Being ambitious and multitalented, Mario has tried his hand at all sorts of sports competitions."
In Super Mario Odyssey 2 outfits Mario can get and wear are the Racing outfit and Mechanic outfits. So not only are these outfits Mario kart themed, but they also have some Mario Kart Sponsor logos on them. This is an acknowledgement of the karting games in a game considered "mainline." Another one is when Super Mario Sunshine listed off both Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 as having taken place prior.
In Mario Party 9 the Princess Minor Constellation says the following about Daisy. "A constellation named after a princess who enjoys tennis, golf, soccer, and not getting kidnapped." This is the Party games making a connection to the sports games.
In Mario Superstar Baseball in the Exhibition Records we get a description for Mario that says the following. "A kart racer, tennis player, golf enthusiast, doctor... The list goes on and on, showing he's a jack-of-all-trades." Again connecting the various games and a repeat of the jack of all trades claim. Again in MSSB we have the DK's description saying "His talents lie in beating on his primate foes and kart-racing."
In a previous post I brought up that in Paper Mario 64 Luigi's Diary says the following. "I remember the carefree days when we played Golf and Tennis and had Parties." I also previously mentioned in a post that Luigi's Kart shows up in the Origami King. But it also happens to show up in Color Splash as well. Also, in Color Splash Bowser says "MARIO?! What are YOU doing here/ Do we have a kart race scheduled for today?" Yes the paper games are canon.
In Super Mario Run there are some statues one can get, one is a Mario Kart Statues. Not these statues and other objects do give lore about the Mario world. Another one is a Blooper statue saying "Blooper from Mario Kart now immortalized in statue form!" You have the Banana statue saying "This banana peel can cause a lot of mayhem in Mario Kart!" Finally in the video 51 Rapid-Fire Questions About The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Miyamoto said that it's always the same Mario when asked if there is multiple Mario's in reference to the games. This matches up perfectly with what the Nintendo website, Mario Encyclopedia, and MSSB description are all saying. So with all this information it should be quite clear that the sports, karting, and party games are all intended to be canon. That it's always the same Mario.

"Mario vs. Bowser - Das ultimate Carrera RC Kart-Duell" was a video uploaded to Nintendo's official German YouTube channel in 2016, featuring a dramatized race between the Mario and Bowser officially licensed Carrera RC cars.
At one point during the race, Mario passes Bowser after the latter spins out on a banana peel and glares at him in a manner most likely referencing the "Luigi Death Stare" that originated in Mario Kart 8 (note that the stare was referenced openly in other Nintendo products around that time, such as Paper Mario: Color Splash, making this highly unlikely to be a coincidence).

Bowser's redemption should be really gradual, like he starts kidnapping Peach less and less because he starts focusing on other stuff, and eventually just stops without realizing
That's essentially how I picture it myself
The closest thing to this so far is Paper Mario Bowser since he wasn't really played straight as a villain since the first game, and in Sticker Star and Color Splash where he still was a final boss, he wasn't himself but possessed (Bowser was later allowed to participate in Sticker Festival too for all it's worth)
This is also the only version of Bowser so far that acknowledges their kart race competitions lol

The one thing I want to start this off with is to say I have no interest in participating in Paper Mario discourse. If you asked me if I enjoyed Color Splash and Origami King I’d give you a genuine yes (Sticker Star not so much, but few would fight me on that one). I have my preferences leaning towards the old stuff, but this isn’t about shitting on the new, just a celebration of what’s currently happening.
With that said, let’s get this going.
I don’t think a big introduction and recap of the Mario RPG history is all that necessary here. Only thing I’ll note is that I played all of them in release order over the years, apart from RPG, which had to wait until the Wii Virtual Console release in 2008, I even played the Mario & Luigi remakes, so I have a lot of opinions.
Needless to say, the Mario RPGs were one of those branches of Mario I just always expected to be there over the years. Along with the platformers, sports games, Kart, Party, etc, it was always one of those reliably present parts of the franchise I could count on to be there system after system.
The past couple of years though did feel very different. Paper Mario, while still retaining RPG elements, has shifted to a more adventure game kind of focus and with Alphadream gone, Mario & Luigi series is now in limbo, with nothing certain on whether the series will be handed off to another developer or be kept dormant for some time.
There are the Mario + Rabbids games and I like those a lot, but I personally never saw them as part of the RPGs, moreso strategy games with RPG elements like Fire Emblem. It’s just how I see things but I won’t argue with people that think otherwise, perfectly fine in my book.
It just felt like that part of the franchise was basically done for, after so many years of being around, but then, this happened.
Super Mario RPG was announced to get a remake. This was obviously huge for many reasons. It is a niche title that did well back then, but doesn’t really represent the Mario world as we know it now. Not even Peach’s Castle had its design set in stone at that point, that’s how early a take on Mario as a world it is.
It’s extremely faithful to boot. Mario, Peach and Bowser were updated to their modern looks and Toad now has dips on the blue vest, all more than fine changes and besides that, the game is a modernized take on the original to a tee. The environments, original character designs, even everyone’s proportions, are spot on and kept as you remember them.
There is more to say, but that ties into the big announcement we got last Direct too. You know the one:
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door is also getting a remake and it’s looking every bit as faithful as the RPG remake.
Given how much I have adored this branch of the franchise, I can’t put into words how much this return to what we used to have means to me, it’s genuinely special to me.
It’s hard to say which of these I would have deemed more out of reach, but having both of them on the horizon really makes me wonder about some stuff. In particular, perhaps they are deliberately aiming to relaunch the RPG branch with these, especially knowing the Switch successor is more than likely on the horizon.
Regardless of what the future holds, this announcement hit me in the best way on a personal level. I love RPG and was excited to see it get such a loving comeback, but Paper Mario felt like an even bigger deal. RPG was a one-off that did its thing and then went quiet. Paper Mario is a series that after the second game, has seen change after change that, along with interviews, made it seem like the series I fell in love with, wouldn’t ever go back to what it used to be.
Gonna say once again that this isn’t a means to bash the new games, there even is a lot to them I enjoy. The overworld gameplay is consistently good and it’s more explorative edge and things to do in it even are something the old games can learn from. I also really like Huey and Olivia and genuinely think they and their dynamics with Mario really do a lot to keep me engaged with their games.
Thing is,I still think the old formula was more rock solid and don’t believe in tossing that out just for the sake of being different. There really isn’t anything wrong with sequels that take an established foundation and just expand on and play with it and it’s not like the Crafts Trilogy, as I’ll call them for brevity, don’t repeat ideas either. Every new game has a castle in the sky, a crafts themed main partner, some level of Toad rescuing, a game show at some point, Luigi popping up once per area, etc. Not even saying that as a bad thing, just saying it’s not like the series over the past 11 years hasn’t been using some elements multiple times too.
There is also THAT subject, character variety and yes, I am in the boat that the lack of it has harmed the modern games and no, I don’t think that what the old games did was very different from what Mario always does.
I said this back in my essay on 64, but Mario always does what needs to be done to adapt itself to a new genre. In the platformers, new takes on established species are usually reserved for the mooks or bosses, because they are such an important asset of the game. In an RPG you get that too, but the NPCs you interact with also get more variety, especially the Toads, because interacting with them and a large chunk getting various bits of involvements in story beats or sidequests, is a big part of the game.
I genuinely don’t see how Galoombas, Goombrats, Cat Goombas or in a non-mook example, Goombette from Odyssey and RPG Goombas like Goombella or Frankly are all that different. They all serve a particular purpose and are given distinct designs and characteristics that compliment them. They’re the same thing and of course that’s also gonna mean more unique designs in the RPGs, because while reused models/sprites for generic NPCs is an RPG norm, you do want to create the impression of a lived in, diverse world, instead of making you consciously feel like you’re talking to the same guy over and over again.
It’s a reason and I was floored when I learned it, that the Super Mario kun adaptation of Color Splash has more Toad variety than the game itself:
Sure they got the same outfits, but that's what kun always did, even during TTYD days;
It’s just a massive benefit to establish character and a reason that the Rescue Squad, Captain T. Ode and the Professor from TOK are standouts of the Crafts trilogy, because they DO have something to visually communicate their character and go from there.
These games ARE still deeply rooted in Mario and just add what needs to be added to translate well into an RPG. Like people give a lot of flak to say, the old Dry Bones design in the first two Paper Marios and I get it, but it is important to note this was the most recent design available for them at the time:
The modern Dry Bones design wasn’t established yet, so they worked with what they had. The games never twisted anything Mario in ways that defiled its vision, they just did what they felt was needed to make the game enjoyable as an RPG and a Mario game.
Goes without saying, but seeing the battle system not tampered with is also really lovely to see. I won’t throw shade at the modern games, but I do personally think none of the modern games have come up with a replacement that compares to the old system, with SS and CS even having ways to softlock you in certain circumstances like a really unlucky Kamek curse in the latter, keeping you from using Jump cards against flying enemies.
This isn’t about me not liking something different. I’m an avid pre-Switch ND Cube Mario Party defender who would play all five of them over Super Mario Party (now here’s a hot take).
It’s not about me being pissy about the paper focus. I prefer when it’s just a stylistic choice, with the occasional visual gag nodding to it, but I can give credit when I feel a use of it is creative and not just the characters mentioning they’re paper like that’s a joke of its own.
I had more points like this but decided to trim things because as I said, the point isn’t to bash the new games, I just genuinely think RPG and TTYD have a stronger foundation and are just better translations of Mario into the RPG genre and hope to see them signal a return to this style of Mario RPGs. Heck, they can still make adventure games like the crafts trilogy as their own sub-series and freed from the burden of having to please an existing fan base of a different style, I honestly want to see them go all out with the direction they go for. It and the RPG Paper Mario can easily co-exist that way.
More than anything though, I am amazed these two games exist at all. Both RPG and TTYD are treasured by many, but they aren’t the platformers or Mario Kart or something more recent that can be seen as currently relevant. Bringing these two back shows they are listening to the fans and I hope they do well enough to show to Nintendo that this is something that pays off.
Above all else I want to celebrate that we are getting this kind of Mario game again. Sure, I’ll argue WHY I think it’s such a good thing, but this is more than anything a time to be happy, not to fight.

30? Where did that source come from? I know Miyamoto said 24 in some interview, but I’ve never seen 30 stated anywhere.
"Once a character gets created and becomes publicly known, people ask things like "What's their favorite color?" "What's their favorite food?" and the character becomes firmly established that way, you see, but I hadn't decided on anything aside from him being roughly about 24-25 years old."
[Source: Shigeru Miyamoto, Director of Donkey Kong (Arcade), Nintendo Online Magazine No. 87, October 2005]
From my perspective he isn't a middle-aged man, he feels like a young man around 24 or 26 years old or so. The story is about Donkey Kong, who Mario was taking care of, running off with his girlfriend, so if I had to describe him he'd be a young bachelor. But he is often called things like "old man", and sometimes people look at him like he's in his 40s (laughs).
[Source: Shigeru Miyamoto, Director of Donkey Kong (Arcade), nintendo.co.jp article, October 2016]
It's established that at the time of Donkey Kong (Arcade), Mario was between 24 and 26 years old. However, time has passed since then. Enough time for:
Mario to meet Princess Peach and for her to have at least three separate birthdays (Mario Party, GCN Yoshi’s Cookie, Mario Party 4, New Super Mario Bros. Wii).
Ten or so separate Mario Kart tournaments.
Cranky Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. to get older.
Characters like the modern Donkey Kong, Goombario and Bowser Jr. to be born and age.
There are many more examples, but clearly quite some time has passed since Mario's days working on the Construction Site and fighting a young Cranky Kong. At the lowest possible estimate, four years have passed, which would make Mario 28-30 years old. However, being a bit less conservative and giving all of these events a bit more time to breathe, we could stretch it to about 6 years, placing Mario around 30-32 years old. Assuming Mario was 24 during Donkey Kong (Arcade), he would be 30 now, which aligns with the English text of Paper Mario: Color Splash:
"I'm beginning to understand why you've been fighting this Bowser guy for 30 years."
[Source: Huey, Guardian of Prisma Fountain, Guide Character in Paper Mario: Color Splash, October 2016]
Mario and Bowser, of course, first fought as babies in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island:
This would also align with what may be birthday balloons seen in the background of Dr. Luigi, perhaps celebrating Mario and Luigi's 30th Birthday:

Hi! This is Luigi, from the Mario series! I’ve been missing people, especially my bro, a lot more recently. I figured I should try to get a canon call out there to try to help with that! This’ll probably get long, though, sorry! Feel free to ask me about any of this, and anything I might’ve missed.
As far as memories go, Mario and I grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom. Past that, though, it may be easier to give a list of games I have memories from. I’ll try to get the weird ones out of the way first so anyone checking to see if I’m a canonmate can check for those, first.
We did have competitive sports matches about once a year, and the same’s true for kart races. I only know about the story mode for Mario Tennis Aces, but I can tell you that, unfortunately, that did happen. It’s likely that other story mode events happened, too, but I haven’t checked yet. The normal, less story based platformers were similar to the sports and kart games - events that happened that weren’t originally connected. Yes, Double Cherry Pass existed. We did explore it a few times. We didn’t go running through while searching for fairies that Bowser kidnapped, though.
I wasn’t able to help out during Sunshine, and Galaxy is familiar but I don’t have any actual kin feelings towards it other than that Rosalina is very familiar. I haven’t checked Galaxy 2 yet. Odyssey and Balloon World is probably part of my canon, though.
I remember that Super Mario RPG happened, but I wasn’t there for that. The first three Paper Mario games also happened. It took time, but I did eventually remember my time as Mr. L, as opposed to canon which says no one even knew who I was. I’m not Paper Luigi, though, and I don’t have memories of Sticker Star, Color Splash, or Origami King.
I also remember all of the Mario and Luigi series, but especially Superstar Saga and Dream Team. I do have memories from the other three, though, including Paper Jam. I did keep Thunderhand (unlike canon, which never mentions it again). I have no way of telling whether the originals or the remakes were my canon, since the changes between the two are mostly limited to Bowser’s minions or the Koopalings.
I have memories from the Luigi’s Mansion series. My canon follows the remake of Luigi’s Mansion, so there’s a few time travel shenanigans. Gooigi was mostly his own person, he just needed some guidance. If you compare a solo player game to a co-op game, Floor 3 matches best with a solo player, but otherwise it was more like a co-op game.
I’m 21, and while I’ll probably still talk to you if you’re a minor, I’d prefer talking to other adults! I’d really like to talk to any of my friends as either Luigi or Mr. L. This includes Mario, Peach, Bowser, Peasley, Daisy, and Tippi/Timpani, as well as Nastasia, O'Chunks, Mimi, Dimentio (may be iffy, hope you understand), and Count Bleck/Blumiere, but even if I didn’t list you here, I’d love to hear from you! I’m ok with doubles, and even if you’re not my canonmate, I’d really like to talk to you. If you like or reblog this, I’ll probably check your blog!
Oh, and I’ll probably rb this to my own blog, so you might see that in the notes.
(If you wanna add anything, Metta, feel free to!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good luck, my dear Luigi!
What are your favorite Mario games? Mine are the first 3 pm games and 4 m&l rpg series ,64 , galaxy 1+2 and odyssey (yeah I like a lot of Mario games I was mostly raised on)
My favorite Mario games are Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario TTYD, and Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (and Partners in Time, haha). I’m also a pretty big fan of Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mario Parties 5-7, haha. I’d even throw in a niche pick of Super Princess Peach.
I also tend to like what I was raised on. I was a GC era kid, so a lot of my favorites come from that era (and the DS era because frick the DS was cool). I do like some of the games that have come out in the last ten years though. I already mentioned Odyssey and MK8, but 3D World is also really fun, I actually have a soft spot for Color Splash and Origami King, and frick Bowser’s Fury was an absolute treat, I wish we had gotten more of it.
Oh and also I have to give an enormous shout-out to the underrated gem that is Super Mario Land 2, my very first handheld video game. If you’ve never played it, definitely check it out, it’s an amazing game. One of my favorite memories as a kid was finally getting my brand-new Game Boy Color through the mail and popping in Super Mario Land 2 just to be amazed by the fact that there was color, haha.
Yes. I’m old.
(sorry if you didn’t expect an entire essay by the way, that’s just how i roll)
Final Thoughts on Paper Mario the Origami King with some major spoilers
I thought this game overall was incredibly charming and worth your time if you are a fan of the classic games like the original Paper Mario 64 or Thousand Year Door. It was leaps and bounds ahead of Sticker Star, and overall I thought it was better paper Mario game than Color Splash ever hoped to be.
Even though I'm pleased with playing it through it does have some glaring issues. Right out of the gate, this game is being held back by some sort of executive decisions from Nintendo and it shows tremendously especially within the first few hours of the game. I know nothing about the development of the game, but there are defiantly some things that seem either out of place or rushed which is strange.
Practically the first 3-4 hours of the game is nothing but tutorials, which they do need to explain stuff but not this much oh my goodness. They truly took a lot of the challenge out of the game and made it "very, very young kid oriented" and I'm not looking for the most challenging game out there--I usually play most games on easier difficulties so I can enjoy the adventure instead of having to be annoyed with redoing things. Olivia pops up way too much. I liked her character for the most part. Between Huey, and Kersti, Olivia was a very good one. Huey was a little bit more funny, but Olivia had a lot of charm and multiple emotional arcs. I know saying that sounds silly for a Mario game but she does grow as a character showing that she's still worried about whether or not she can really stop her brother. However, she pops up every time something happens. It's too much. I can see something has appeared Olivia. It's okay--but I'm getting off topic that's exactly what Huey did too in Color Splash. I hate to say it but when she leaves your party by being crushed by a boulder it felt like a classic paper mario game then. You had Bobby with you and he would add his own flair as the helper character.
Bobby truly was a great partner, and even if he's only with you for like maybe 2 or so hours I enjoyed having him around. I'm extremely glad they had partners return even if they felt more like story related. I liked having more than just Olivia with me. All of the partners except Professor Toad were really cool. It kinda sucks that Professor Toad is so forgettable because he is the only partner who has an over world ability. I think it would have been cooler if he was like a Monty mole or something instead of just a Toad with a shovel, there's just so many Toads in the game that an archaeologist Toad could have been cool, but I don't really know where they were trying to go with the character. He was like a scaredy-cat kind of character but also made weird like college references like about his thesis. At the very least he had an unique outfit? I don't know I'm reaching for Professor Toad. Why not just have Captain Toad who's an already established character and an explorer? Anyway, I found it kinda weird that no one else had an over world ability, and they could have done some more interesting puzzles if they had given Kamek or Boswer some. I loved having Kamek join and how he talked about being self conscious and lacking self esteem because Bowser never listened to him. Bowser Jr. was cool too, he wasn't as bratty as I thought he'd be. He was written like a tough kid. Both Kamek and Jr. have satisfying reasons for leaving your party. I liked how they put Mario first in order to save the whole kingdom. It made me as the player feel like "these bad guys know that Mario can save them." I know it's silly but again just a nice touch to the story. Of course you get Bowser to join you right at the very end which is just so great. He even talks about his parenting practices. Luigi also have a shockingly hilarious and "key" role to the story. I'm so glad to see these classic characters have great writing behind them, and really show off that these partners are pretty vital to paper Mario. Especially Luigi and Bowser when in the previous two titles had maybe like 8 lines between the two of them. Yes they don't do much in battle, but they are vital to the story. If my paper Mario games have a fun and unique story then that's all I really want.
Bobby was my favorite. If you haven't seen the one big twist involving Bobby, I'd skip this section and pick back up at the next paragraph. Anyway, Bobby sacrifices himself to save Olivia. While you can kinda piece things together and see it coming after a while you don't expect Bobby to just like straight up die. I remember when it happened I was like, "they really did this in a Mario game?". They even have a cute moment later on in Bowser's castle where Olivia thinks she see Bobby again. Overall he was amazing. That whole area of Shogun Studios felt the most reminiscent of classic Paper Mario games. I had a grin on my face pretty much the whole way through.
The one big gripe I had with the partners is other than Bobby any time you wanna go back to Toad Town or other areas they're just like "yeah okay i'm gonna stay here see ya later". Why? Why not let them come with you? The writers don't have to write any additional dialogue and if they did that would have been cool. Why wouldn't Professor TOAD wanna go back to TOAD town? There's an extra area where you can take Bobby at one point to get photos taken with him in Shogun Studios. Why not do that with other characters as a cool little Easter egg? Truly I didn't understand why they couldn't travel with you. I know in that infamous interview floating around with the directors and producers saying they only wanted one partner at a time so it didn't cause any confusion for swapping them out but that's so stupid.
Back to the game being held back--there were times I could see the designers desperately wanted to make a unique character better, or give something else a personality but they weren't allowed to. It hurts a lot when the original paper Mario games could give toads fun little names like "Zess T." or "Fice T." and now we have "Professor Toad" or "Battle Lab Toad". There are two toads in Toad Town that both say something like "where's Purple Toad?" or "Where's Blue Toad?". Stuff like that takes me out of the enjoyment of the game. It's only when you go and look on the around on other sites that you find out that the Origami Craftsman man is actually Theofold. Yes, we did have captain T. ode, but like. That's just "Toad". Back to that interview from the producers of the game where they say they can't really alter Mario characters anymore like give them age, gender, etc. But come on. I'm not really sure why they can't give the toads proper names. I know that's an extreme nitpick, but that's definitely something that takes me out of the game and reminds me "oh yeah we can't do this anymore". Even Bobby, will constantly remind Olivia to call him "Bob-omb" It just feels like a slap in the face. Bring back Toadsworth? An established character who has been MIA for like years now. Just please. Please make the Toads different they did a very good job here with a handful like, the sea captain, captain T.ode, Professor Toad, and the Shangri-spa Toads. I remember those toads because they were dressed up differently than the other ones. I even remember the Toad who told you where the heart ups were because he was in a completely unique pose then the other ones. Please Nintendo I'm begging you just make them look more unique or don't rely on them as a pillar of a character. They are all the same. Just do more colors of Toads! There's red, blue, yellow, green, and purple.Make an orange Toad or something please. I liked finding the Toads in the different areas and they would unfold from origami, it gave me some korok seed vibes. Do more stuff like that!
Concerning the game's overall story, I liked it, but it could have been so much more. There were multiple key moments where I was like "why wouldn't they have a cut scene for this as like a flashback?". The first one was right at the beginning of the game. They instead of showing you in the actual game like a cut scene, they show a small slideshow of Toads setting up for the Origami festival with Princess Peach on the logo screen which I guess is okay, but I'm not a fan. Personally, I would have liked there to be a sort of storybook intro that the previous games had being like "every 100 years the toads in toad town set up a festival to honor the proud technique of origami" and then cut to Mario and Luigi getting a mail call from Parakarry (like the previous games) and then being like "the festival is today we hope to see you there." and then bam they're driving to the festival. I know that seems kinda dumb but why not show that in your game instead of Luigi being like "can't wait to get there" while he's driving his cart from Mario Kart. It's a little weird to me. The biggest moment like this happened when you first meet the origami craftsman (who yes is just a Toad) he explains these unique origami techniques he used to fold King Olly to make him come to life, but like brushes past it real quick. And then at the very very end (skip ahead if you don't want spoilers) Olly talks about this 1000 crane origami wish thing that was never brought up before by anyone. If he had mentioned it when he dropped the boulder on Olivia that would have been acceptable but it just kinda comes out of nowhere. If you're going to bring these things up then like at least mention them once before or have some type of set up and pay off for it. It just felt kinda rushed. The ending was cute though, and I remember liking Color Splash's ending a bit more but this one was surprisingly beautiful with how it ends with floating lanterns it reminded me a little of Tangled.
The other big thing people are complaining about is no experience. This has pros and cons. pros: the battle in this game a lot of them are scripted or can be ran past no problem. However if you want to buy better weapons or accessories (this game's subtle nod to the badge system) you need a lot of coins. A lot of them. You use the coins in battle to let the Toad audience help you or use coins to buy more time to line up your foes properly. I like this system. While I could have gone for a little more incentive to battle I found myself using my coins even if I had thousands of them. I thought it was a pretty good balance. I don't see why they couldn't have thrown in a little more to make the battles worthwhile though. Why not after ever 10 battles let you pick a stat? Mario's running speed in the over world could be faster, Mario's first strike can be stronger, It doesn't cost as many coins when using them in battle? These are just thoughts I've had if they don't want to use a traditional style stat system. They had max up hearts that raised power and health it's just kinda strange why they don't want to have stats improve or give you another reward for battling other than money.
I will say while backtracking to get missing collectibles I avoided battles outright. If I got into a battle while backtracking I would sigh. I knew there was nothing left for me to spend my coins on so I would try to run from the battle but nine times out of ten I would fail running from the battle. At least the battles go by quickly, but it would use up durability on your consumable weapons. I'm very glad that they brought back permanent weapons and no stickers or cards. This weapon system is a littler underutilized though. I feel like if the designers went in they could have come up with three or four more weapon types. Why not use more Mario related power ups? Why just the fire or ice flowers, tail, and pow block? Why not have a jump move that hits in a 4x4 area like the hammer? They have a hammer item that works like the jump move! Why not have the frog suit back from sticker star or color splash that you can use to dodge unavoidable damage if you don't line up the monsters in time? I loved the battle system a lot more than Sticker Star and Color Splash but it seems like they only scratched the surface of the attacks Mario could do. If you're going to have different weapons that break why not have 10 or 20 unique different weapons as opposed to just more powerful versions of the same 5 weapons? Same with the healing items. Why only mushrooms, when in Toad Town you can get coffee that speeds you up or slows you down? Especially when you find a handful of coffee shops in the game, why can't I buy those coffees there? Why not bring back the cooking in the game from the first two? I know it'll never happen, but near the end of the game you get a spot to cook one item and I really got my hopes up. I know I'm presenting a lot of questions, but this is all I thought about when doing the battles. If they do an "origami king 2" or something that reuses this battle system I feel like there is a lot of room for improvement and a lot more unique encounters. I also feel like they did this because they didn't want to over complicate things. They wanted the battles to be simple after you did a puzzle section. Also the battles are super snappy. Lasting two turns if you get the right line up and can be more if you don't. I think that's a really good way to make the player really learn the right way to move the board. That being said there were many times I didn't see the solution and would brute force my way through making some of the battles a bit of a slog.
They do flip the script a lot with the boss battles. First off "The Legion of Stationary" is great. While it took me a while to get used to them, they were some of the best fights in the whole game. The Tape boss was extremely cool and used an element that I wished more games could use. They let you get comfortable with the battle system then the tape is like "no you can't move stuff around, or you have to move the 2 rings around at once." This was such a cool battle and it really did make you think. I will say it was a little weird that the bosses were real life objects like colored pencils or a bunch of rubber bands, but I thought it was more comical. I know a lot of folks did not like them at all. They were set up and referenced though because all of the tools were mentioned in a bookshelf in the origami craftsman's library. This is how set up and pay off is done correctly because Olly would have seen him using them and so he'd use them against the toads and Mario just a nice little touch really. If you missed the book in the library scene they really hammer it home by showing you the legion of stationary was on the origami craftman's desk. I've looked around online and apparently a lot of the bosses can be beaten differently, they don't all end in 1000 fold arms finishers which is super cool.
Also the two other big mechanics for this game were the 1000 fold arms and the paper macho bad guys. The 1000 fold arm thing was fine, it felt right at home in a game like this which focused on origami. That being said the paper macho characters felt tacked on. They did not belong in this game, They were the other side of the battles being in real time and defeated by Mario using his hammer on them. The reason why they had to have these were if Olivia was not with you like on the cruise ship you had a way to take down a boss without her help, because she's needed for the 1000 fold arm technique. Cool idea, but felt wrong for this game which focused on origami it's like they really really wanted to make this a Zelda game and have action style battles to contrast to the puzzle ones. Again, I could see them being used in another game.
If they do make another Paper Mario game, and I hope they do, I hope they keep pushing the needle forward.Every game since Sticker Star has been a HUGE improvement, and if we're not going back to the original games I hope each game makes an effort to address all of the glaring issues that all of us Paper Mario fans have.
After Super Paper, Luigi ended up gaining a boost to his sarcastic side, adding in Mr. L's insulting nicknames. The worst this ever got was when(Post LM3) he, completely done with his brother getting held captive over and over, called King Boo "Mr. Isn'tcreativeenoughtomoveonfromtheghostportrificationizer" TO HIS FACE, and nearly getting killed on the spot
Mario writes letters to all of his partners from 64 and Thousand Year Door, getting the most back from Kooper and Admiral Bobbery.
Wario and Waluigi are not brothers. Rather, they're cousins, both from the Mushroom Lands.
If asked, Bowser would vehemently deny he ever wanted to ride a Yoshi. Having little patience for the Koopa King, what with the trouble he gives his people and shell-less hatchlings(The Bros.), Yoshisar brings it up every time he's anywhere near Yoshi Island
The King Boo who works under Bowser(and attends the kart races and parties) is secretly named Boorio. Secretly, he seeks to make an alliance with the Boos under King Boo/Turnboover via Booigi, since their names sound so similar to the troublesome plumbers.
After the events of Paper Mario 64, Twink was dubbed the eigth Star Spirit, balancing out Eldstar's experience and older wisdom with his wonder and younger wisdom. This knowledge of "balance" is present in the other 6 Star Spirits. Mamar and Kalmar for Love and War, Skolar and Klevar for Science and Magic, and Muskular and Misstar for Strength and Grace.
Daisy and Florian are 5th cousins, despite one being a human, and the other a caterpillar.
Madame Clairvoya's first name is Merlumina, though only her brothers(Mr. Luggs, Sir Weston, and Slim Bankshot) are aware of this.
Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King were all made up stories by a bunch of Toad kids in school, guessing about some of the adventures Mario's gone on.
Mario Headcanons, because I've been into Mario longer than Sonic
Mario and Luigi are technically both from The Mushroom Kingdom and Brooklyn. Ettore and Caterina Garza did indeed do the do, but the Bros' "grew" as fetuses in the hidden Kingdom of Storks, where babies come from in the Mushroom Dimension(for lack of a term at the moment). As such, after Yoshi's Island(Yoshi's New Island is non-canon), the stork ended up carrying the two through the Warp Zone to Brooklyn, and dropping them off in the maternity section. Because of UNBENDING FATE, Mr. and Mrs. Garza were in that hospital that night, and thus, able to pick up their boys, shrugging off how they didn't remember any maternity stuff, nor that the doctor said Caterina was infertile. The Bros. did end up finding a Warp Pipe or two(so Yoshi's Island DS and Partners in Time can happen), but never really staying in The Mushroom Kingdom until they hit their 20s, after chasing a gorilla down into the sewers, clearing out the pipes, and finally, finding the oddest pipe in bright green.
All the Yoshis have names, they just all start with Yoshi. The mainline series Yoshi is Yoshitane, and is fluent in English. The main character of the Yoshi's Island series, and the one who's partially adopted Mario and Luigi in his heart is Yoshisar.
The Star Children and the Star Spirits are connected, with the Star Spirits declaring/deciding who they'd be. Eldstar chose Mario, Mamar chose Yoshitane(despite still being in his egg), Wario was chosen by Skolar, Muskular decided on Bowser(griping about it during Paper Mario after being freed from his card), Misstar was the one who chose Peach, Klevar decided the Garza household didn't have enough visits that night, choosing Luigi, and finally, Kalmar decided the last one would be Donkey Kong III.
Super Paper's prophesy is cyclical. Every 1,500 years, the Pixls awaken as ones who could fulfill the Dark Prognosticus hit the minimum proper age for the end of all worlds, if it is so invoked.
Luigi is so resonant with magic because of the good few hours he spent right by the most powerful Magikoopa, and thus, the strongest wand, in the Koopa Kingdom as an infant. Hence, the electricity, dream-world resonance, and minor prophetic dreams.
Toad names tend to be either a pun(i. e. Niff T.) or something to do with mushrooms(i. e. Lamella).
King Boo(the one from Luigi's Mansion, as there are more than one), originally Scone Turnovend, was once the regent of the Waffle Kingdom. During his reign, he ended up falling in love with a wizard from the Mer clan, Meredith. The two had two children, before Meredith fell ill and died. Later, their daughter, Polaria ended up going missing after finding a fallen star. Eventually, the family's heritage was blotted out when Regent Scone and his son, Quiche, trying to find Polaria, ended up crushed by Whomps, becoming the dark magic-using Boo king and one of the Boos to later be part of Boolossus. As for Polaria, she ended up partially becoming one with the stars, taking the name Rosalina, after her brother's favorite flower.
The Tribe of Darkness don't exactly speak English, so Blumiere learned it from Timpani. Because of this, he picked up her accent and eccentricities. This is why someone as high-class as Blumiere has wide "A"s.
While DooPliss had stolen Mario's name, body, and aPPearance, Luigi, via twin sense, felt rather nauseous, describing it later as if he was having an out-of-body exPerience.
