Financial responsibilities may not be met in a family where there is a significant economic divide. Snapping his fingers, Nickerson signed the papers. They will undoubtedly create a lot of noise while they search for you. Preserving the skills of current staff is more economical than hiring and training new ones. Your enormous contribution to our accomplishments is immeasurable, and we will always be appreciative. In this serene atmosphere, everyone ought to be able to get a decent night's sleep. A significant section of the insurance business considers the members of Nickerson's team to be the most depressing people they have ever met. There are numerous problems that require attention at this time. Dawn marks the start of a new day. For some people, scars may appear better with time, while for others, they may appear worse. With the resources at our disposal, we are sure we can deliver outstanding service. I could really care less about the film's box office performance. It was meaningless, in my opinion.
The amount of health insurance knowledge you possess is extremely astounding.
A substantial workforce is employed by Nicholas, Inc. in the towns of Waterford, Groton, New London, and Warwick. The Nickerson Agency has made the decision not to hire anyone who has openly expressed a desire to attend self-improvement seminars and conferences, despite the fact that one of the most populous cities in the US is located less than three hours away from Connecticut. Groton and Norwich are both quite proud of the Nickerson Agency. Hartford is the largest city in Connecticut in addition to serving as the state's capitol. Despite its small size, Norwich, Rhode Island, is anything but a "typical" American town. Keep your composure. The massive Rhode Island construction company Nicholas, Inc. has gone global. Hartford, Connecticut, is among the greatest American cities. A democracy that is perfect would provide the right to vote to every adult. Get in touch with your insurance company or service provider if you require any assistance. If I could give you one piece of advice, what would you like me to tell you? Our top goal is making sure our customers are satisfied. Your assistance is greatly required. Many media professionals quickly attack and brand others who disagree with them as "liberals."
We were able to get to a reasonable pricing arrangement by obtaining competitive estimates from several service suppliers. You'll have to spend some money on it in order to truly enjoy it.
That can be an impossible effort for certain businesses. To succeed, we require the assistance of all. This is an excellent work that everyone should read if they get the chance. The company's quick growth has exhausted its internal resources.
After an on-the-job injury, no employer has the right to make an injured employee choose between paying their bills and getting the essential medical care. It is projected that maintenance and repair costs would increase. Contact your insurance provider as soon as you get an approximate cost estimate for the repairs. If a Connecticut resident is hurt by the carelessness of another motorist, they can file a personal injury claim with the at-fault driver's insurance carrier to get paid for their medical bills. Sunshine insurance is subject to very tight regulations in Florida.
The Nickerson family is the owner and operator of Nickerson Insurance. It's common practice to initialize or abbreviate other people's given names. The only thing that separates these identical twins is their given names. After the deal closed, Nicholas changed the company's name.
Perhaps the sun will rise later today than anticipated. The insurance company may issue the order whenever it deems appropriate. Now how about some guidelines? Previous clients have expressed high appreciation for the treatment's effectiveness and thoroughness. As surprising as it may seem, exerting pressure can really help you feel calmer.
Our top goal is making sure our customers are satisfied. It is only appropriate to ask for assistance when absolutely necessary.
Upon receipt, your application will be swiftly examined.
Remain away from individuals who are fixated on money at all costs. The appropriate search phrases might help you uncover a wealth of information on the internet. Your business won't be destroyed by natural disasters if it has adequate insurance. It's possible that the doctor gave you this prescription for the weekend. It will be easy to grow your business if you follow our advice.

Taking the Stress out of Relocating: A Guide for Take Me Home Movers
Moving is an event that can be difficult for some people, especially if they are moving with their families or if they are required to move to a faraway location. Local Movers Near Me needs careful planning and organization, not to mention that it can consume a large amount of one's time, energy, and financial resources.
It is crucial to plan ahead and have the appropriate tools accessible in order to lessen the levels of stress that are connected with moving to a new location. The relocation process for Take Me Home Movers will be made easier with the help of the following guide, which will provide useful tips to make the procedure as stress-free as possible.
Tumblr media
Preparation
When you move, you have to do a lot more than just pack up your belongings; you also have to get ready for the  Local Movers Near Me itself. This requires going through all of your possessions and selecting which ones you need to keep, which ones may be thrown away, and which ones can be donated.
It is also vital to get in touch with the suppliers of the utilities in advance so that all of the bills may be paid off before the day of the move. In addition, prior to deciding on a location that meets your requirements as well as those of your family, you should conduct research on the prospective neighbourhoods.
In conclusion, it may be beneficial to get in touch with Take Me Home Movers in advance in order to ensure that they know exactly when they will need them on moving day. This will ensure that there are no unneeded delays or surprises once the movers arrive at the location where the move is taking place.
Packing
It's true that packing is often one of the most time-consuming tasks associated with  Local Movers Near Me, but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way if proper preparation is done beforehand, such as buying boxes of varying sizes (smaller boxes work best for heavier items like books) and bubble wrap or paper padding materials, which prevent fragile items from breaking while being transported.
In addition, if you label each box with a different color to indicate which room the contents of the box are destined for, unpacking at the new location will be a great deal less difficult because everything will already be arranged according to the category of the room when you get there.
This preparation in advance really pays off down the road, resulting in a smoother transition on the day of delocalizing, thanks to the labeling of each box indicating its contents, which helps KeepMeHome movers determine what goes where without having to open each box, which would only add more time spent unloading and unpacking at the destination site.
Unloading & Unpacking
After ensuring that all of their goods can be moved from their previous residence to their new one without incident, the next step is to unload and unpack all of their things.
Keep Me Home movers make this portion of the process very simple by providing full services that help rapidly restore a property into a living home again after a long-distance voyage. Although the task as a whole is challenging, this aspect of the effort is not.
The customers take care of the specifics, such as positioning the furniture, appliances, and other items where they would like them placed within the space, while the  Local Movers Near Me perform the heavy lifting.
Additionally, once everything has been unloaded, the daunting task of organizing and sorting out all of the items within the home comes next. This process, however, does not have to stay that way if planned accordingly; utilizing simple tips such as creating "organizational zones" throughout the house helps maximize storage capacity while keeping the place looking neat and orderly.
Conclusion
Moving does not have to be a stressful experience all of the time; having a well-organized plan that is planned out in advance makes  Local Movers Near Me much simpler and more efficient, which in turn reduces the amount of stress felt during the entire process.
Customers are able to have peace of mind thanks to the dependable services provided by Take Me Home movers. Not only do they know that their precious cargo will be transported to their new home in a secure manner, but they also benefit from additional services offered outside of the loading and unloading aspect, which makes the entire process less taxing and ultimately results in a smoother experience overall.

notes from editing the papers to be more readable (part 2) hoverbike diagram edition ~
main plan for this one was: instead of trying to duplicate details, i could scrape-scrape-scrape out the negative space around details onto a clearer background and go from there! this took a while here's the results of that work w/o my notes over top ...
Tumblr media
(note that this process wasn't any more perfect than the tracing method - there's a lot of interpretation and guessing to both with the condition of this image)
ok! let's get into this >v< stuff i found will be bolded and green'd for readability
Tumblr media
first thing i dug up was the readable text in the upper left. i think it's safe to assume that the first word is "Hover," given. :) hoverbike. but the second one isn't as clear. after a few tries tracing it i came up with the final phrase, "Hover Complete," which sounds so sososo cool. reminds me of Turing complete?? maybe when you make vehicles that can levitate over any surface that's a standard piece of jargon lol. i don't think the two lines after that are readable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
next is the arrow pointing at the vehicle with the two words near it. at first i agreed with the "Power Core" assessment bc it's such a common term... but when i was trying to dig that up i just couldn't find the forms of those letters?? there's also some SUPER-distinct spikes and curves of an m in that last letter. it could still be Power written super fast, but idk. so, with the obvious P, that turns into "P-m Core" i- instantly loved this phrase too- xd it would kill as a scifi term. i couldn't come up with anything irl for it except for some VERY specific electronic components (way over my head) (& extremely hard to google). apparently, something called a PM core (Pot core Module) is used in telecommunications and industrial electronics (source: this pdf from ferrite pm core supplier, TDK).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have no idea what this thing is (left). i like it, though. curious detail: i've been referring to that thing (right) as a hoverbike because it looked similar to one from memory, but on closer inspection it's lacking a lot of the decorations and basic silhouettes of the in-use vehicles from Wanted and the The Box scrolling shot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oop. is that whole thing (right, previous image group) a "P-m core" ??? then why does the text to its left mention hovering? or is it a prototype bike? or a simplified drawing of one? dunno........ anyway, i was going to say that the final bikes have zero knobs, joysticks, or other rounded protrusions to speak of - they are exclusively touchscreens and sleek angles. therefore id say this thing (left, previous image group) is probably an internal component of some kind. or something else entirely. i can't read the text connected to it either
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was very excited about this line. ......until it started looking like Irken text. (|-•L'/_',=-_ '/<''/L'_'| !! anyway, the readable bits imo: a delta Δ (i was excited bc this is a common physics symbol), a T (temperature? time? torque? teslas?), a dot (decimal point? multiplication?), and a partial derivative symbol δ (if you're desperate to understand these lines and took some calculus a while ago). whatever is happening on this line, it might involve both finite and infinitesimal changes. weird!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
let's get these two from the page center out of the way. short version: i have no idea what's going on in/around the 3 boxes, and the upper chemical-equation-ish-thingy looks terrible with the cutting-out method. off to the right are my best guesses after tracing the upper line several times: Cl+ ions can exist, and ClO chlorine monoxide is a compound that exists. (more on ClO from sciencedirect) the significance of this information is lost on me right now. if any of this rings a bell to you, dear reader.... pls help- :,3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
connected to the chemical-equation-ish-thingy are these other mystery nodes. i've highlighted and traced several options for what these could be. _27 ? D37 ? Dꟻ7 ? :)ꟻ7 ?
Tumblr media
finally, the circuit-diagram-looking section. i immediately noticed the US resistor symbol (---\/\/\/\---). whether or not the vertical lines surrounding it matter are unknown (the capacitor symbol is ---| |---, but no special resistor symbol i could find matches this exact setup, and you don't typically layer separate components over each other like this in a circuit diagram). my first sketch interprets the line & smudge coming off of the resistor circuit as a ground symbol. my second sketch interprets it as a messy connection to the second box off to the side, with the swirly line inside. the inductor symbol is a helix connected to the wire (--ꔛ--) (or a bouncing line connected to the wire (---◠◠◠---)), but no special inductor symbol i know of rotates one way and then the other... nor are inductors typically drawn all by themselves in boxes........ if the inductor were parallel to the wire, it would make more sense (inductors can influence wires they are parallel to), but this whole thing is kinda meaningless to me.
Tumblr media
in summary, i think this whole diagram is... meant to look like a very serious technical document from afar. honestly i wasn't expecting to get any SERIOUS(!!), IN-DEPTH(!!!!), HARD SCI-FI(!!!!!!!!!!!), ACCURATE DOCUMENTS PERTAINING TO THE EXACT WORKINGS OF THE HOVERBIKES- it was just fun to take it at face value with my current knowledge and see if anything came from it. :3 the fact that there's a single resistor symbol is cool for attention to detail LOL... genuine respect for anyone who can make approximation designs like this without. anxiety paralysis over getting something wrong. it looks awesome!!
-
if you're inspired by my edits, pls reblog this with your thoughts ! !!
i've been scrutinizing unclear lines and trying to recover old corrupted memories from ECE classes all day ... so i probably missed something c;
ok gang. its theory time
the analysis of the new mercenary scene. meta, blueprints and time
warning it is incredibly choppy because of the chaos i am in rn !!!!!! but anyways
okay so. the video cuts off at green&red defending themselves but i doubt that really means a lot
the glitching. it IS reminding me of the way chosens memories were scanned through. but mercs having a whole tv remote?? chosens memories mightve as well pushed them to use youtube ?? but why didnt they access it earlier ?? why vic didnt???
bc of these question im more willing to think they themselves decided to use youtube right now. maybe only right now !
this raises a ton of questions. does outernet have somewhat of an access to internet after all? is it just their own tech? (could be supported by the fact that if youtube was common there i doubt theyd be using specifically television for it. i feel like theyd use other screens instead without a need of a remote especially considering how advanced their tech is)
still possible that it is common. considering they aren't that focused on it and there are random workers in the bg literally enjoying the show
this whole thing is VERY meta lol but i do think the mercs are the ones that influenced the stream in this way
A BIG portion of alan drawing a flower from ava season 2 is paid attention to in the glitching scene for some reason ?? maybe as a note for his and secs alliance.
the video then cuts off and goes to victim again. the whole video was watched through
the stream cuts off to mercs. **RIGHT** at the moment chosen notices the freedom stick rights article. based on the vid it could be just primal messing with shit but i feel it was intentional. (ha. freedom? loser. we're here instead)
later. the video resumes at victim again. i didnt see any changes to vics or chosens ending.
okay. the mercs. pulling up screenshots for this one
Tumblr media
i. cant decipher THAT much even though the quality is 1080p for me.
but i DO see that the first blueprint has as i suppose the hover ??
the text pinpoints "power core" and its pretty much the most readable thing for me. another one is kyokaz was here its just a cameo
the blueprint shows buttons? perhaps the controller of the hover? going to a circle thingy. perhaps what is working inside the hover
the whole thing on the left corner says f___ complex but i cant decipher
Tumblr media Tumblr media
second screenshot. the blueprint left to the first one looks like a pc?? and its not surprising even in the screenshot itself bc. the mercs have one to the right corner behind em
now. third sc.
HELLO?
Tumblr media
firstly. A VIC DRAWING????? WITH A GUN????
there is a possibility of it being any stick but. i feel its victim. in my guts
shooting?? what. for.
it is scribbled out . . .
there is a possibility (along with the self portrait of vics in the unused bg) that it was just. him doodling. it would kill me actually because he is no great artist like sec. just a doodler (<words of flareboi here)
now. this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
again . the question how they accesed it.
if they can get youtube to open there. how did vic not know of the showdown. of sec
showdown was uploaded online. that was literally in canon !!!
unless there's a rule that not everything internet-like and youtube like can be accessible. but i dont really think of any implications that proved that
except. for the fact that showdown was already uploaded. before the ep even ended. would it imply time passing differently in both realms?
lord i needed to scream it out.
OH GOD !!!!!!!!!!!

25th of First Seed, Fredas
Sildras was very interested in helping me with my forgeries. I had not expected it, but he was very interested in the way that I was utilizing ink and replicating handwriting.
I gave him a very short basics of forgery and I realized I had a golden opportunity with it all. I made a letter, with Baro‘s handwriting. Then I told Sildras to copy the letter but change all the instances of Clavicus Vile to Almsivi and all instances of he or his to they and theirs. He took a few tries before he felt satisfied with it and I used that time to work on some of the pamphlets. Pamphlets that I wrote half of in Baro’s handwriting.
When he was done, Sildras showed me his work. He did a pretty solid go at it for his age and I held the letters side by side, the forgery I had done and the very similar, but slightly off version, that Sildras had completed. There was a very specific way that Baro wrote his dohts that seemed to be giving Sildras particular difficulty. And that, I knew, would be the key to an investigator realizing something was amiss.
I gave him honest critique, though I made sure to be gentle about it and praise his good work more than anything else. Then told him that I was going to use his forgery with his permission. He asked me why and I explained that those very minute differences would only be picked up on by someone with understanding of handwriting analysis. And so it would look like a well made forgery and thus point to there being an original. An original which I, myself, had made. They would be looking for this version.
Sildras asked if they would not be able to trace the writings as forgeries and I explained that all the Temples in Deshaan used the same paper and ink supplier out of Mournhold and that I had brought some with me for this possible use.
When everything was set and dried with a bit of heat from the fire, I asked Sildras if he was wanting to go for the placing of the items. Whether the forgeries, or other items that I had to plant.
He told me that he did not want to actually place things, but he did not wish to be left alone.
So I told him that we would be moving invisibly and said that we would need to make sure not to run into one another while I worked. He assured me that he had learned detect life and it would be an opportunity to practice it, but that he would stay out of the way if I would let him join me.
I agreed, hoping that I was not making a poor decision in allowing him to join me. Not that I doubted his abilities to perform, but more for what the long-term effects of participation may have on him. He is such a gentle boy.
But I had Farayn go ahead and check for me if Baro was in his office yet, which she confirmed that he was. Then she went back to his office so she could let me know when he might be leaving.
Baro has a small home near to the center of town and so Sildras and I headed as though we were interested in seeking out the market for a day of shopping. We made a show of walking around the marketplace, then ducked behind a house where I tied up my skirts and we used our respective abilities to become invisible. I held his hand so that we could reach Baro’s home without incident. I did not wish to risk losing him so early on. Besides, it was good to know that he was with me. It was a small comfort in a way I did not expect.
I let his hand go only to pick the backdoor and checked to make sure there were no traps. When it was clear, I took his hand again and we entered softly.
There only seemed to be one servant in the home and he slumbered in a chair near the kitchen as we crept upstairs. Inside the bedroom I made sure to search for anything hidden of use. I found a loose board and lifted it to find a small box with a set of anti-Daedric warding amulets, or so Sildras assured me they were. I made sure to remove all but one of them and leave the board slightly to the side.
I hid forgery I wrote underneath the mattress and then checked for any more hidden areas. Nothing on the walls or inside any furnishings. So I tucked one of the pamphlets inside of intimates drawers and another between the bottom two of his folded doublets.
We went down to where the servant slept and I slipped one of the Daedric warding amulets into their coin purse. Another I hid inside of one of the empty pots in the back of the kitchen.
I found the steps to the cellar, clearly a simple storage for food stuffs.
There was nothing hidden for me to use, but I made sure to open up one of the crates and remove the salted bantam guar there. I set up a small shrine in the crate and then made a great sigil symbolizing Vile and covered it with blood I had brought in a small flask. Then covered that with a straw mat and placed one corner up on a rock so that the edge would be easily tripped over and discovered.
Sildras gave me a whistle to let me know that the servant was stirring and I joined him carefully at the top of the stairs, making sure that we moved to the side as the servant went to a closet and began to retrieve a mop and bucket. We followed him out the open backdoor when he went to draw water and then slipped away to where I could drop invisibility for a while.
I let down my skirts and caught my breath, taking a magicka potion to help me recover things. Then we returned to the market for a while and made a few small purchases. Souvenirs for Avon, Mother and Father, for Little Khes and Qau-dar and the spouses, and some things that Sildras suggested to put into Kuna and Cariel’s rooms for when they come back to visit.
Then we returned to the inn for supper. I told Sildras that the office planting was going to be very dangerous and that I thought I might need to do that one on my own in the evening, but that I would promise to return. That if for some reason I could not, I would have Faryan come to him and she would bring him one of my hairpins to let him know that I was caught and that I would return to him after I escaped capture.
He seemed scared by this, but I assured him that, as I could not die, there was nothing that would keep me from returning to him. I left him with all my personal effects, including the pendant Almalexia had given me. I told him that I did not expect to be caught in any way, but it was always best to plan for the worst. For if you did, then you would be prepared no matter the situation.
Sildras asked me not to go. Or to take him with me. I told him that making sure that our cover was held and that he was safe was a very important job I was leaving him responsible for.
He told me he would do it and I assured him that meals would be sent to our room and that he was not to let anyone in, just saying that I was sleeping and to not disturb me, and then to take the meals into the room and relock the door.
I kissed him and had him help me prepare. I changed into leather clothing that could not get caught on anything. I pinned my hair down and tied silk round it and my face so that my breath was muffled and nothing would fall out of place. As I worked, I explained the importance of everything I was doing in my dressing. I wanted him to feel included.
Then we made our prayers for the night. I made an extra one to my Prince for success in carrying out Her will. Sildras made one nearly the same and I gave him another kiss before I slipped out the window, teleporting through shadows to the ground and then off towards the Temple, hoping that Sildras would not be too hurt by my leaving. I just could not risk his getting hurt if things went wrong.
As it turned out, at night there was more activity and less guards than I had expected at the Temple. The doors were open and the priests seemed to be enjoying the warm evening by having their windows open to let the fresh air inside.
It took me no effort to teleport along the halls and then slip inside Baro’s office. I hid pamphlets and letters in various places around his office. Inside of books, under other letters, behind a cabinet.
I replaced the letter that Farayn had taken.
Then I went to one of the prayer books upon the shelf and carefully undid the lace of the binding, sliding the pages out. I made replicas of some of the more important passages, with Vile related metaphors in place of the Tribunal, then slid them into the place of the other pages, and rebound the book.
I went to the Spirit Shelf he had, priests often have them, not as a Waiting Door inside their home, but as a sort of prayer area to the Tribunal. I slipped the figure of Almalexia down and popped the head off. She is not even my god, but it felt awful to do. I took the small head of Clavicus Vile, his helm not so very dissimilar from Almalexia’s at a distance, especially at such a small size, and replaced Almalexia’s head with it and then put her back in her place on the Spirit Shelf. I had desecrated his personal shrine and it was going to be a big sign to anyone who saw it, him included, that things were wrong.
Then I plucked one of his sealed letters, one that was left to be picked up by a courier in the morning and drafted a very incriminating, vaguely coded message, intended for someone clearly in the cult.
I also made sure to leave a half written letter to that same person, thanking them for their help in making it appear as though all the cult was wiped out and agreeing to help elevate them in the cult’s hierarchy as soon suspicions died down and Baro took his rightful place as one of the higher ranking members of the cult.
I began to hear voices in the hall and grew nervous. I had been there a long time and I thought it best to leave. But first, I made sure to toss one set of letters from his desk, the forgery included upon the ground, then left out the window so it would appear as though it was simply the wind that blew things in such a way.
All my hard work and Sildras’ was now in place. It was time to watch as the fly flew into the web and began to struggle. I wanted to make sure he was going to struggle. To try and deny things. To get himself so entangled that he would despair.
Then it seemed as though I suddenly understood. The pieces just all fell into place. The true art, it was not simply to stage a murder or ensure a death was not discovered. No. It was to set the elaborate workings into place so that even without having to be there and tightly control every inner working, there was no option for the target but to be caught in the web of your work. That the more they want to try and free themself, the more deeply they get caught.
That is the true beauty of my Prince.
Zethith truly handed me the most useful suggestion a Weaver can give their Widow. I understand now.
How long have I followed my Prince and am only just now beginning to realize it?
It is a harder road, certainly, but as my influence grows and I can manipulate more pieces, more people, the more elaborately I can work things. And if I work close to the month of my birth, all the easier for me to make things work to my advantage.
I returned to the inn in a satisfied mood, only to find Sildras staring worriedly out the window after me. The poor thing.
I appeared behind him and gave him a great hug.
He squeaked as I did so and I told him it was just me.
He threw his arms round my neck and told me he had been so worried. I told him I had made a promise to him and that I would not break it. Not even if death were to come between us. Nothing would stop me from coming back to him.
I held him for a long while before he loosened his grip.
It was clear he was exhausted. Emotionally as well as from being up for so long. I brushed out his hair for him and then got changed while he got himself ready for bed.
I got into bed with him and sat there considering what I had learned tonight as he fell asleep with his head against my shoulder.
There are many mistakes I have made in my life, but I think that, regrets aside, I have made the best decision that I could have. This is a life I must protect. I must remember when I have to suffer the sneers of the House that I am doing this all for the benefit of my son. Sildras deserves every happiness and I will do whatever it takes to make it a reality. The Three willing.
My Prince, please accept the good work I have doing in your name. Observe how I serve you with loyalty and love. I do these great deeds in your name.

Summary: Kate Williams, young healer and member of the Order, joins Durmstrang's staff at Dumbledore's request. Her mission? Find a Death Eater and survive long enough to tell the story. Set in 1996.
Pairing: Charlie Weasley x ofc
Masterlist
[Part 1] [Part 2]
--
The possibility of being involved in another curse-breaking adventure had her uneasy. If that book ended up being an important part of her mission, she was ready to send a ‘thank you’ note to Dumbledore and teach herself how to ride a six-horse carriage back home.
Mer Yankelevich had gone to her quarters and didn’t come out afterwards. Kate waited for her to leave or do something; she even dared to put her ear against the door. But the teacher never made a sound.
Kate didn’t know what to do. For the first time in her brief career as a healer, no one seemed to need her. From what Astrid Rhode and Cassandra had said, in Durmstrang it was always necessary to have mediwizards to spare, yet her new companions appeared to want her out of the way…
Especially Cassandra Steiner.
She hadn’t bothered more than strictly necessary to explain the basics of her system and when she had finished; she disappeared from the infirmary without a word or warning.
“She does that a lot, don’t worry about it.” One of the healers had said. The others silently agreed, and no one paid much attention to Kate since.
With few students in the school, the hospital wing was practically deserted, except for a stomach-ache and a sprained ankle.
Kate spent that Monday morning going through the drawers and cupboards available to the mediwizards and memorising the potions and where they belonged, a task made laborious by her new uniform.
The uniform, though bewitched to stay warm, was heavy and rather cumbersome to wear. For her taste, it lacked pockets and had to keep her wand in her sleeve since she had nowhere to put it. A belt would not have been out of place either.
She approached a healer who was writing a label on a flask. “Can I ask you a question? Why is that cupboard closed? The one at the end of the room.”
The woman didn’t look up from the bottle and just answered her indifferently.
“Steiner’s orders. She always closes that cabinet.” She handed the newly labelled bottles to Kate.
“But... but why? What do you keep in there?”
“No one knows. More vials, I guess. Anyway, everything we need is in the other drawers. Can you take those potions to the cabinet next to the door?”
Feeling useful for the first time in the morning, Kate took the flasks to where she had been instructed and arranged them following Cassandra’s method. Meanwhile, the healer approached her with more flasks to place.
“If you need anything from there, ask Steiner. She has the key.” She began humming a song unknown to Kate, and it seemed to her that the woman had no idea what was hidden in that closet.
“I saw her take out a box once, but I don’t know what was in it...” A mediwizard who was making the nearest bed commented quietly. Kate came over interested and started helping him fluff the pillows.
“What did she do with the box?”
“She took it away. She does that a lot, going in and out... Get used to it.” He laughed. “Why did you come here in January, anyway? We start in September.”
“Oh, I’ve been doing another job. I joined Durmstrang at Astrid Rhode’s request. Apparently, I have good recommendations.”
She had prepared the answer. She had all Sunday to plan it. One thing her mother had taught her was how to lie telling the truth. It was a long answer, with details, and yet it didn’t even fully answer the question.
She felt guilty in doing so, but it wouldn’t be the last time someone would ask her that question, and it wouldn’t be the only thing she would have to lie about either.
“In which hospital?” She didn’t want to mention Romania. She really didn’t. That would lead to having to mention Charlie, and that wasn’t going to be a possibility.
Lucky for her, the doors to the infirmary opened wide, letting in a man in brown robes with a tray around his neck.
Kate and the mysterious man looked at each other, and his eyes, slanted and darker than coal, seemed to penetrate her thoughts.
She concentrated on his mind and tried to implement the tactics that Snape had taught her about occlumency. There was no sign of an external mind, which was good. Perhaps he had not tried to enter her mind, and his gaze was just that piercing.
“Is Miss Steiner here?”
It took Kate a few seconds to recognise him. Kent Jorgensen, potions teacher and the second person in headmaster Rhode’s papers.
She dropped the pillow that had in her hands and rushed to talk to him.
“No. She left an hour ago. Shall I give her a message?” Although Kate was taller than the average British woman, she needed to throw her head back to be able to look at him. He was much more intimidating from up close.
Jorgensen untied the rope around his neck, a gesture that revealed a tattoo of what appeared to be a snake or a giant reptile that occupied the entire right side of her neck.
She thanked Merlin when he handed her the tray and managed to suppress the need to clench her fists. She accepted it while the teacher followed his explanation.
“I am the trusted supplier,” he joked. “Miss Steiner has asked me for some potions missing from the inventory.”
The surprise must have been clear on her face because Jorgensen felt the need to explain himself. She had spent the morning checking the shelves, and none of the bottles were empty, and there were no gaps between them, indicating a missing bottle.
“I believe she likes to make sure there’s stock, in case of an emergency... Oh, excuse my manners: my name is Kent Jorgensen, I haven’t seen you around here until now...”
“Kate. I’m going to put this over there.” She lifted the tray slightly and turned his back as quickly as he could. Wishing her haste to be camouflaged by efficiency, she walked away to the locked cabinet and placed the tray on top.
She couldn’t confirm whether he was a legilimens. She experienced no signs except that she felt as if the man knew all her secrets.
As she turned around, she saw how he chatted animatedly with the boy who had the stomach-ache. Just then Cassandra Steiner walked through the door.
“Ah, Miss Steiner. I’ve brought what you asked for.”
“Perfect. Thank you, Kent.” Cassandra walked to where Kate was standing but didn’t bother to look at her.
“I’ve left the tray there, I can put...”
“No. I’ll take care of it.” Her tone was definite and dry. “Go to Mr Danchev, he’s been complaining of a stomach-ache.”
“I can help you...” The nostrils of Cassandra’s curved nose widened, and Kate took the hint. “Fine.”
There was no longer any trace of Professor Jorgensen, and the other mediwizards seemed to have lost their desire to talk as soon as Cassandra entered the room. The hospital wing remained silent for the rest of the day.
Kate noticed that Steiner hadn’t gone near the tray or the cabinet. Curiosity was killing her, but she kept her professionalism and didn’t insist on the subject.
The boy Professor Jorgensen was talking to had confessed to Kate that it was impossible to do anything in secret. Whatever was going on in the castle or the surrounding grounds, he knew. He had never told the headmistress if the students were skipping classes to go snogging at the quidditch field or if they were awake at night, but he never missed an opportunity to let the students know that he was aware of everything.
He also had mentioned that some students described him as ‘worse than a ghost’ and that every time you turned around; he would be there watching.
However, Kate didn’t come across him in the days that followed. In fact, any professor seemed interested in getting out of wherever they were. There were several times when Kate and Mer Yankelevich crossed paths while the teacher was leaving the library and Kate was on her way to the infirmary.
By Wednesday afternoon, Kate felt confident enough to return the map to Corentin, just as she had promised. He greeted her with a mischievous smirk.
“Honestly, I am surprised. I bet myself you wouldn’t come until tomorrow.”
Kate handed him the scroll with a shake of her head.
“How much have you lost? Many galleons, I hope.”
“Enough to leave a hole in my heart.” He took his hand to his chest dramatically, making her snort. “And in my pocket.”
Kate opened her mouth but closed it immediately, thinking it would be unwise to trust anyone. However, she couldn’t help feeling that Corentin was… special. He was mysterious, yes, but so was she in those circumstances. His mind was clear, and honest, so she respected his privacy.
“Well... I’m going now. Thanks for the map.” She hadn’t even turn around when she heard the librarian’s whisper.
“I have a feeling you want to ask me something.”
With her index finger, she caressed the engraving on Corentin’s desk. “It’s nothing... something I’ve been thinking about for a few days. Because of something I... read.” She hesitated and did so for so long that Corentin thought she had decided not to speak.
“What would you hide in plain sight?” She raised her head and kept his gaze. His eyes flashed back and forth, trying to decipher the origin of the question.
As the librarian thought of a response, Kate frantically searched for the answer to the question that never came.
“If I had to hide something in this very library, it would be a book.”
Something lit up in Kate’s head.
“And wouldn’t you feel the need to protect that book, even though you knew no one would find it?”
With one elegant wand movement, the mountain of books on the desk rose and the different volumes flew to their respective places. Corentin lined up the inkwell with the edge of the table before answering.
“That would make me look a little suspicious... unless no one questioned my behaviour.”
“Thank you, Corentin. That was helpful.”
The librarian bowed his head in response and smiled.
As she turned, she thought she saw Professor Yankelevich sitting next to a student.
Trying to hide her face from the teacher, she approached Corentin again and moved the curtain just so it covered them both.
“At least invite me for coffee first.” Kate huffed, amused at the comment, but recovered quickly.
“I need to ask you something else. Mer Yankelevich, do you know her?”
“Oh, yes. Comes here regularly. Practically lives on the second floor.”
Kate looked down and tapped her fingers against her thigh.
“And... and what’s on the second floor?”
“Second floor, from ‘c’ to 'h': conjuring, counterspells, curse-breaking, deceptive spells, divination, dream-interpretation...” he recited
“Did professor Yankelevich return a curse-breaking book?” Kate interrupted.
“I don’t remember her borrowing a book, in the first place. Everyone who wants a book must talk to me first. I remember every face and every book they take.” He tilted his head with pride and added: “I have an excellent memory.”
“Could you... check if the book is there?” Corentin frowned. She appreciated his patience and lack of questions, but it was clear he was getting frustrated. “I’m interested in the topic and I saw her with that book, Advanced guide for curse-breaking, and I thought I might read it when she is finished.”
“Oh, well, in that case...” Corentin smiled and in his bat form, fled to the second floor before returning to Kate.
As she expected, the librarian returned distressed and empty-handed.
--
The peace ended the next day with the start of school. The corridors were flooded with shouts, laughter and hustle and bustle demonstrating that Astrid Rhode’s rule was not as strict as that of her predecessor Igor Karkarov.
The disappearance of the former headmaster of Durmstrang worried Kate. It wasn’t something she had the time or the inclination to investigate, but it was a recurring thought in the back of her mind, like a motorcycle engine someone had left running.
Then there was Cassandra Steiner and her strange behaviour, though normal for those who knew her. The tray of potions was no longer where she had left it, and Kate assumed that her boss removed it when she was gone.
The mediwizard was not among the four folders that Director Rhode had given her to investigate, and Rhode trusted Cassandra, yet Kate knew that Death Eater or not, Steiner was hiding something. It would be better not to let her out of sight, even if it was complicated by her comings and goings.
Corentin was right: the best place to hide an object is right where it should belong. A book in a library or potions in a hospital wing. Kent Jorgensen mentioned that there was a high demand on certain potions, but Kate had been checking the bottles and none of them was empty.
If Cassandra was using potions outside the hospital wing, the question was: for what?
Kate looked out the window of the infirmary and contemplated the clouds travelling with the wind until they were out of sight. The school was prepared for the greyest days, lighting all the candlesticks and candles in the castle to illuminate the place.
You are an absolute idiot. You had the tray right in your hands and didn’t bother looking at the bottles.
While playing with the magic barrier that worked as a window, she thought about the situations in which she could find the other two teachers missing from the list, without raising suspicions. I can’t just start asking questions out of the blue, they’d know something is up, she thought.
And Yankelevich? She thanked Merlin for Corentin’s discretion, but she knew that sooner or later she was going to be in trouble with the teacher.
Sounds of voices celebrating brought her back to the present.
Two healers were playing rock-paper-scissors in one of the empty beds. Kate came over, curious.
“Ha! You’ve lost. Now I must beat Jordan and Rys, and I’ll be out.” said one of them.
“Out of what?” asked Kate, half laughing. “What have I missed?”
“Every year we hold a rock-paper-scissors championship among healers. The ultimate loser must go to the duelling classes,” said the other. “Hurry up, Williams, if you don’t participate, they’ll choose you.”
“Explain it to her properly, Derek,” interrupted the first healer. “The advanced duelling class is taught by Libor Marek, the best duellist in Europe, as I understand it. His classes can be a little... violent. He always asks for a mediwizard to be present so as not to waste time...”
“Last year it was my turn, I was unconscious for a week because of a spell that bounced. I don’t want to do it again.”
“It was three days, and you were fine,” he said with a roll of the eyes.
At that moment, Cassandra approached them and crossed her hands in front of her.
“Compete for the next class. The first one will be for Williams.”
“What?” said the three healers in unison.
“Miss Steiner, Williams is new here...”
“Precisely.” he addressed Kate. “It will serve you well as practice.” For some strange reason, Kate thought she wanted to get her out of the way. However, she had to investigate Libor Marek.
“When’s the first class, then?” Kate’s gaze involuntarily shifted downward as she saw movement from the corner of her eye. Cassandra adjusted her sleeves quickly, but not enough to keep Kate from seeing the red marks that adorned her forearms.
Looking more closely, she noticed that her hands also had some scratches and scuffs.
“Tomorrow.” Before she could ask her another question, Cassandra turned around and went to the other side of the room, where she sat down to read some documents.
Kate went to the mediwizards who were playing a rematch. “Do I have to prepare myself somehow?”
The couple started laughing out loud between game moves. “Only mentally.”
They were still laughing as Kate walked away.

Kim Seokjin: Makeup
Heading into work you had a headache, it was excruciating, the throbbing behind your eye and the tightness around your temples. Your face felt swollen, and you packed on as much makeup as physically possible and you knew it wasn’t a good look. There were no lashes or mascara, no eyeshadow, no lipstick. Just concealer and foundation to the max.
You stepped into work and the receptionist gave you a weird look, usually; you got compliments when you wore makeup; you were pretty good and knew what worked well on your face. But today you looked strange. Your eye was too swollen to put anything near it and so you just looked like a one tonne alien.
“Hey babe, what’s going on?” A voice said, “you bailed on our movie night last night and didn’t even text me?” Seokjin was your saviour he made your dull job manageable. He took one look at you and froze he knew this wasn’t right. “What did he do?”
“It’s not that bad it’s just a bump”
He dragged you by the hand to his desk taking his face wipes from the first draw he tried to grab your chin, but you turned away. “Please let me see” he gently wiped away all the makeup he liked when you had a clean face. It was like he was seeing the real you, that isn’t to say he didn’t like when you dressed up, he liked how you could accentuate your eyes and lips.
But this, this was wrong. He felt sick, the more he removed the more the colours were revealed dark purples and blues stained your smooth skin, there was a small scab on your cheekbone where the skin had split on impact. He shoved the packet of wipes into your arms and turned declaring. “I will kill him”
Min Yoongi: On a stick
“It’s just meat on a stick?” You rolled your eyes at your best friend who was being lured from his apartment from his roommate Jungkook. You had planned to spend the afternoon together where you were going to tell him how you feel about him finally after all these years. Hell, you even stood by him when he dated girls through high school even though it nearly killed you.
“Yeah, why do you make it sound like a bad thing?” Yoongi scoffed grabbing his jacket, “Come along we can get some food and come back and watch the movie”
“Look you don’t have to come, we don’t need haters ruining our dinner” Jungkook sighed grabbing his keys, and you reluctantly slipped on your shoes and coat running after them. You didn’t even order before you snapped.
“Jungkook what is your problem with me, I just wanted to spend the afternoon with my best friend and maybe tell him that I have been in love with him since fifth grade and you’re out here making me feel like absolute trash,” You hissed Yoongi was frozen starring at his menu. He looked like he was deep in thought. Realizing what you said and how he had reacted to your blunt and unexpected confession you left.
“y/n!” Jungkook shouted he caught you quickly “hey, dude I am sorry, I thought you liked me and I was trying to push you away because… Yoongi likes you, said he has liked you since fifth grade and has never wanted to ruin the friendship. I really am sorry, go back inside he is in shock and is silently freaking out that he will never see you again. Lunch is on me, here”
Jung Hoseok: Smoke and Mirrors
Your son wanted to be a magician, and you spent a fair amount of money on all the books and toys and such but as his passion grew so did the hole in your bank account. You bought him front row tickets to see a world-renowned magician live on stage. It was an amazing performance. The magician was very good looking and was so bright and bubbly he danced he made all the sound effects. Your son insisted you see him backstage, and you took him back there. It took a long time but your son refused to leave. The dressing room door opened and there he was, his shirt buttons undone slightly.
“Why hello, who do we have here?” he smiled at you and your son and you gave him an apologetic smile
“I am so sorry to bother you, my son, he is an aspiring magician and well he wanted to meet you and I really couldn’t say no to at least trying”
“No, don’t apologize,” he looked at his watch and grinned, “I got time, come in and sit and tell me about yourself. What’s your name? Do you know any tricks?” The two talked until your son had fallen asleep on the couch.
“Whatever you did, that’s real magic right there,” The two of you laughed.
“Do you need help to your car, he looks a little heavy, or I can carry your bags if that’s more comfortable for you,” He smiled and the two of you headed to the parking lot. Buckling your son into the passenger seat, you turned to say goodbye, and he swept his hand behind your ear. “It seems my number was behind your ear this whole time”
He placed the paper into your hand and gave you a grin, one hand slipping into his pocket to find his keys and the other waving goodbye.
Kim Namjoon: Walk in the Park
Namjoon was a smart man, he knew everything that happened in the neighbourhood. The street lights along the park path flickered off for twenty seconds every three minutes. The old lady Lady by the store shut her curtains at 6:15 exactly after watching her shows and feeding her cat. The walk through the park took Five minutes exactly, and that there were three security cameras on the path.
People were going missing and were usually found dead days later. He set off on his usual walk at 6:00 heading to the store; he stopped to pat the cat and waved to the old woman. He bought a single bottle of Soju as he did every night. Explaining how he had to get home before his slow cooker was finished, showing the timer on his phone. “It’s got 8 minutes left I should make it home by 6:15”
Walking he saw you alone, he sped up a little and matched your stride. “Don’t look now but there is a drunk man a little way ahead, and the path lights are switch off for about thirty seconds every three minutes” Just as he finished his sentence the lights switched off. You grew stiff under the moonlight. “I am Namjoon”
He continued walking talking to you about the stars, the old lady was feeding her cat before bed, it was 6:10 she would soon close her curtains. He waved to the old and then to you. Thanking him for the help you both parted ways saying goodnight to the old lady. Namjoon smiled to himself walking out of the camera frame and the lights flickered out. You walked hesitantly in the dark but didn’t get very far before you were knocked out from behind.
Chained to an old metal bed frame when you woke, your eyes needing time to refocus you saw Namjoon standing there in a white coat. “Shh it’s okay, you are okay, you see I am an expert. My alibi and the camera footage, I just picked you up and tipped you over the stonewall of this apartment block and walked home.  As all footage and security cameras show me parting ways with you even the old lady saw you go off on your own, nobody knows. Nobody knows that is is me”
Park Jimin: Burn
You opened a sealed box, and you read the stupid script. You were using it as a chance to practice your reading and speaking Korean. But you had let it out, and it was chasing you. Its eyes blacked out and horns coming out from his hair. He looked eerie and was still recovering strength which gave you time to run hiding in a church.
Stopping at the door it watched you and you were relieved until it reached in blackened nails gripping the door frame. It stepped inside calling your name sweetly, you could see the embers flaking off its body slowly not enough to kill it but enough to annoy.
You ran hiding in the confession booth your breathing was shaky. It sang a haunted tune. Its voice layered a low sound that crackled and a high breathy sound like a whine. You held your breath as it passed, calling your name. You thought it was gone, but you didn’t want to take any chances.
You opened your phone the words you had spoken in the translator the demon's name was Jimin and upon searching the name you found it was a demon of Lust, Deception, Chaos and Misfortune. It resides in the third outermost circle of hell with Preceding Taehyung and following from Namjoon. The strongest demon being Kim Seokjin.
A hand busted through the wall of the confessional by your head and wrapped around your throat pulling you threw the thin and shattered wall.
Kim Taehyung: Battery
You forgot to plug your phone in the night before so you charged it while you got ready; it was only at 28% and you sighed heading out to work. You met a client and discussed his hotel remodelling.
Your phone which you had turned off when you weren’t using it at work was now at 16%. It was early in the afternoon and you were emailing a client important information and rushing across town to meet with a supplier. You crossed the road getting hit with a car laying in the rain you found it hard to breathe all the air seemed to have escaped your body. Dragging your arm across the concrete your phone held tightly in your fist you pressed the numbers for emergency services you hit the call button when your phone powered down.
A face appeared about you looking horrified he called the ambulance shaking there was a light behind his head. It seemed like a halo and he was your very own angel.
Jeon Jungkook: Beach  @live-2-fangirl
The beach was quiet; it was overcast and occasionally would sprinkle with rain. You were never deterred, and this weather was better for churning up the sea and creating a few gnarly waves. You laughed at the expression gnarly and swore on your life never to think nor speak it ever again. Getting on your surfboard you swam out to sea it was incredibly exhilarating weaving across the water.
The water grew unforgiving in what seemed like a second pulling you out and you were dunked by a wave and tossed around. You didn’t panic swimming to the light. Breaking the surface, you blinked the saltwater from your eyes and tried to get it out your nose and throat. It was brighter than you remembered. Maybe there was a break in the clouds.
“Can we be of aid lad?” A voice called you looked up to see an old wooden shop, the kind that looked like it belonged in a Johnny Depp quintology of films. Leaning over the side of the ship was a young man, his hair shaggy hair falling forward as he looked down at you. Your wetsuit removed any femininity from your figure and your hair was in a very messy bun. You climbed up the rope ladder on the side of the ship as you didn’t see any signs of your beach anywhere.
It was so sunny with not a cloud in the sky. Did you die? Getting up onto the ship you laid your board down on the deck removing the surf leash from your ankle.
“Where be your port?” He asked they all looked like they were fresh out of a romance novel with billowing shirts and shaggy hair.
You ripped the velcro around your neck and pulled the zip down your back.  Peeling the wetsuit of your arms until they were free, letting out your hair shaking it with your fingers hoping it wouldn’t take long to dry. Some of your swimsuit was on display and as you went to take the wetsuit completely off a long waistcoat was draped over your shoulders.
“My apologies, my lady, we will fetch you some dry clothes,” you shrugged his coat off onto the deck.
“No, need I will be dry soon” you continued to strip, and he unbuttoned his shirt and fastened it around you buttoning it up.
“These scallywags cannot be trusted with a beautiful woman like yourself” he smiled “you are as tempestuous as the waters we sail”

Torn Ch 4 --- John Wick x OC fic
A/N: Remember my long neglected John Wick x OC fic? No? Well, finally got around to another chapter. Need a refresh?
Ch 1 --- Ch2 --- Ch 3
Tumblr media
“Hmm. I’m really not sure! I’m leaning towards the textured blush paper with gold envelopes but I---I really don’t know.” The indecisive bride-to-be ran her hands over the paper options laid out before her on the large wooden table. She fixed her eyes on Kristen with a look that spoke volumes of just how overwhelmed she was. “What do you think?” She asked hesitantly. Kristen smiled warmly and set down her pen. “Personally, I really like the combination of the sage green envelope lined with gold and the blush pink paper for the card. It works all of your colours into it and I think it will look soft and elegant---but it’s really all up to you. Trust your taste!” The woman across from her lit up with excitement. “Oh my gosh! I love that idea SO MUCH! Yes. You know what? Let’s do that.” She said. “Ok, sage green, gold and pink it is! I’ll need a list of full names and addresses to do the hand lettering---as soon as you can get them to me.” Kristen said. “Of course! We just finalized the guestlist so I can have that to you by the end of the week.” She let out a sigh and visibly relaxed. “Thank you so much for everything Kristen. You’re a dream to work with!”
Kristen smiled widely and gathered up the requested items and tucked them into a thin box. “That’s so kind. I’m happy to be a small part of your big day.” She said. “We just got in some really gorgeous planners if you need one to keep track of everything.” She said as she gestured to the display at the front of the shop. “Actually, I could use one---planning this wedding is a beast of a task. I mean, I’m excited and all---but it’s a lot!” Kristen smiled knowingly. “It is---but you’ll get it done. Just make sure to take some time to yourselves and recharge too. Thanks again for trusting me with your invites. If you have any questions about planners Steph can help you.” Kristen said, gesturing towards Steph behind the counter before heading to her office. She loved these client meetings but always needed a few moments to herself afterwards. Weddings were the bread and butter of her business---so she always put so much pressure on herself. She sank into her office chair and sighed, closing her eyes for a moment.
The gentle knock on the door startled her. “Boss?” Steph asked as she peeked into the office. “Someone is asking about a supply order.” “Oh. Thanks Steph. I’ll be right there.” Kristen sighed again and stood up. Drumming her fingertips on the smooth surface of her desk. Collecting her thoughts. She checked her appearance in the mirror by the door and tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear before striding to the shop counter. “Hello madam. You must be Kristen, yes?” She was taken aback at the formality of the persons speech. “Yes, that’s me. How can I help you?” “Pleased to meet you Kristen, I’m James. I’ve been sent on behalf of my employer---we’re looking for a supplier of fine paper goods for our boutique hotel.” “You’d be my first corporate client---I’ve never done wholesale before.” “We’ve heard good things about you---and we always deal locally when we can.” He said. “Well, shall we get started?” She asked. “Yes, please. Thank you for accommodating me, it’s most appreciated---and apologies for not setting up an advance appointment.” “There’s no need for apologies.” She said with a warm smile. “So you’re a new boutique hotel in town?” “We’ve been in Buffalo for a long time but the city has changed so much. We feel it’s the right time to reopen.” James said. “We do value discretion. The plans haven’t been announced yet.” He added pointedly. “Understood.” She said with a sly smile. “Your secret is safe with me.” They worked together to put together the initial order for the hotel. Planners, stationary, pens, pencils. Plain black leather bound notebooks. “Do you need the name of a printer to have the items branded with your logo? I have a great one I work with.” “No, thank you. We like to keep things very minimal. Exclusive.” He said. That struck Kristen as odd. What kind of hotel didn’t want or need branded stationary? It must be a very expensive hotel---but in Buffalo? How would that work out she wondered. They worked together efficiently to get everything sorted. James followed her to the register. “Do you accept coin or shall I pay by card?” “Coin?” She asked with a small polite laugh. James immediately brought out his black company card and left the gold coins in his pocket. “Card is fine.” She said as she rang up the order. “Here’s my business card. Please do call when everything arrives. It’s been a real pleasure, Kristen.” “Likewise. Thank you for coming in. I’ll be in touch when everything is ready.” She said, taking his very elegant business card from him. “Have a pleasant evening.” He said as he left the store. “You too.” She called out distractedly as she examined the exquisitely designed business card. The Continental. Buffalo, New York. It read in elegant gold script. She recognized the address. It was a beautiful old building downtown. It had been empty for decades and she always hoped it would be saved from the wrecking ball. “What what that guy’s deal?” Steph asked loudly, causing Kristen to jump. She looked out the door and then at Steph with a puzzled look on her face. “I honestly have no idea. He was kind of...odd. Wasn’t he?” Steph laughed. “He’s definitely not from here. I know that for sure. He seemed, British?” Kristen hummed in agreement.
-----------------------------------------------------
John was at the kitchen island with the crossword and a cup of coffee, his pen in hand, brows furrowed, when she came in with the groceries. Kristen put the bags down in front of the fridge before she wrapped her arms around his waist and placed a kiss on his temple. “Crossword, huh?” She said as she peered over his shoulder. “Mmm.” “You know I have many comfortable chairs to sit on, right?” She said with a laugh. He turned to meet her eyes and smirked. “I like your kitchen. It’s comfortable. It’s better with you here, though.” Kristen’s face scrunched up as a blush crept across her cheeks. “You absolute sap.” She said as she swatted his shoulder playfully. He smiled and shrugged. “Oh---I read that there’s a meteor shower tonight. I was thinking we could drive out somewhere near my place and see what we can spot?” He said. She smiled and shook her head.
It was one of those moments where what he had done for a living and who he really was stood in such contrast that she couldn’t help but laugh. “What?” He asked as he bumped his shoulder against hers. “You got a date idea from an actual newspaper. It's funny---and very sweet and sounds like fun.” She playfully pushed him off of her and crossed her arms. A small smirk on her lips. “Yeah, yeah I’m an old man.” He said with a laugh as Kristen turned and started putting the groceries away. “I’d help you but -- my aching bones and all.” He shot her a pointed look before he turned back to the crossword with a huge grin on his face.
He lasted all of 30 seconds before he was at her side helping put things away. “How did your bridal consult go?” He asked, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her in against his chest. She felt herself relax, letting go of tension she didn’t even know she was carrying. “It went really well.” She said. “No bridezilla action? I don’t have to get involved?” He teased. “No, she was great actually---just the usual deer-in-the-headlights look that most people who plan their own wedding have.” He squeezed her a bit tighter in his arms and kissed her forehead. He thought about his own wedding. It seemed so long ago now but not nearly long enough to stop his heart from feeling that familiar tug of grief. The edges of it had dulled a bit---and even more since he’d finally been able to open up to Kristen about it. His very next thought was of her. What she’d look like walking towards him. Toward a life together. “John, you’re squishing me.” She said, snapping him out of his thoughts. He loosed his grip on her and ran his hands down her arms. Taking her hands in his. “I’m in love with you, Kristen.” He said quietly. Almost to himself. “I love you.” He said loudly, his eyes filled with warmth and hope as he gazed down at her, a smile playing on the edges of his lips. Her breath hitched in her throat. John watched her expression carefully. Taking in how her lips parted and her eyes went wide as she registered what he’d said. She squeezed his hands tightly. “I love you too. So much.” She looked radiant. Her smile crinkling the corners of her eyes softly. He leaned down and kissed her, one hand splayed on her lower back as he slid the other into her hair. He leaned back against the kitchen island and pulled her tighter against him. He hadn’t meant to blurt out his feelings for her like this---but it felt right. This moment. In her kitchen. She was his home---and maybe he could be hers.
--------------------------------------
They leaned back against the bumper of the car, watching the meteors track across the sky. Steam rose from their thermoses of hot chocolate, dissipating into the cold autumn night as Dog and Gremlin sat at their feet. They’d become fast friends---much to the relief and delight of John and Kristen. Dog never minded when Gremlin would lean on or even sleep on him. He’d give the occasional sigh of resignation and that would be it. “It’s beautiful out here. How’d you find this place?” She asked. John shifted and pulled her in closer to his side. “When I first moved here I was alone a lot. Restless. I think I took Dog to every park, every hiking trail all around the area.” He said. “Oh! That reminds me---there may be a new place we can explore together soon.” She said. “Where’s that?” He asked before taking a sip of his drink and staring up into the sky. “A new boutique hotel is opening up---or supposedly, reopening downtown. They came to my shop for a huge stationary supply order---but here’s the thing, the guy was really kind of weird. So...formal? I’m not sure how well it’s going to go over here.” “You said reopening?” John asked. Dread crystalizing in the pit of his stomach. “Steph thought it was weird too. I mean, he asked if he could pay by coin or card. What a dad joke.” She said. “What did you just say?” He asked. Kristen noticed that John’s whole demeanor had suddenly changed. “Coin or card.” She repeated. John pulled away from her. “It wasn’t a joke, Kristen.” John said harshly. “Why didn’t you tell me about this sooner. You have NO IDEA what you’ve gotten yourself into.” “John---I was about to tell you when I got home but then the conversation we were having seemed more important. Kristen, I love you. That’s nice but this weird guy came into the shop today. Would have been better for you?” She said, throwing her hands up, her lips drawn into a hard line. John exhaled and shut his eyes, taking a minute to calm down. “No, you’re right. You had no idea that this meant anything and I’m sorry. Did he tell you what the name of the hotel was?” He asked. “Shit, I think it started with a C. The Centennial? No. That’s not right.” She said. “The Continental?” John asked flatly. “Yeah, that’s it. How did you know?” “It means they know about us.” “Who’s they?” She asked “The High Table. The people I used to...work for.”
