Filling in the Blanks of An Abbreviated History of Mecha
As I worked on An Abbreviated History, it dawned on me that using a broad definition of mecha makes this a rather intense project. The more I went on, the more I thought "What about Gaiking/Hades Project Zeorymer/Gravion/Genesis of Aquarion," or "Maybe I should list Dragon Ball as an honorary mecha show," or "Would Dragon Ball technically BE a mecha show," or "Should I have mentioned Panzer World Galient?" You get the idea. It's also not helped by the fact that I have not watched most of these shows, so the most I can give of a description is, at best, superficial.
My problem is that if I had kept on second-guessing myself, I'd never finish this series. So this post's purpose is twofold:
To kick off a more long-term project that will fill in the many, many, many gaps in An Abbreviated History of Mecha.
To bring to light and to give you, dear reader, an idea of just how expansive mecha is.
So here's a, once again, incomplete list of mecha that was not covered in the original An Abbreviated History of Mecha series:
Gaiking
Kotetsu Jeeg/Steel Jeeg
Danguard Ace
Super Beast Machine King Dancouga
Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh/Matchless Raijin-Oh
Robot Jox
Heavy Gear
Genesis of Aquarion
Gotcha Force
Dragon Ball
gen:Lock (begrudgingly)
Giant Gorg
Armor Hunter Mellowlink
Gravion
Vandread
Ex-Arm (also begrudgingly, although given more time to think, I don't know if Ex-Arm actually counts anymore)
Hades Project Zeorymer
Megazone 23
Break Blade (originally was a part of Part 6 but was cut since, moreso than most shows, I didn't really have much to say about it)
Planet With
Granblem
Majestic Prince
Heavy Object
Obsolete
Gasaraki
Genocyber
Blue Gender
Flag
Knights of Sidonia
Porco Rosso
Howl's Moving Castle (the Ghibli Film, not the books, although if you squint I think you could count House of Many Ways)
The Wind Rises
Gintama (Tama out here carrying this stupid-ass series by herself)
Shogun Warriors (special thanks to Owlsounds for pointing this one out)
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Waters
The Princess and the Pilot
Medarot/Medabots
Zoids
Red Giant
Tryder G7
The Spider-Man Tokusatsu series
Iron Man
Rah'Xephon
Knights and Magic
Fafner of the Azure
Cross Ange
Robotics;Notes
And many, many, many more. If I missed any series on here that you think should have been mentioned here that was also missing in the original An Abbreviated History of Mecha, please let me know.

What if...The Cross Zone got a lot bigger?
From the creative minds that bought you Namco X Capcom, Project X Zone was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012 in Japan and worldwide in 2013, receiving great praise as it bought characters from three legendary game developers -- Capcom, Sega, and Namco Bandai -- to crossed worlds, dimensions, and the fabric of time for the ultimate cross-over tactical RPG mashup!
But what if the cross zone had gotten a whole lot bigger with even MORE titles and are joined by even more characters from surprising guest companies.
What if...The Cross Zone got a lot bigger? explores what would happen if the events of Namco X Capcom, Project X Zone, and Project X Zone 2 occurred differently with the inclusion of characters, worlds, and universes of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Square Enix, and much more. For example, my fan-made original story movie inspired by the crossover RPG.

I just got to the bit in Lies Sleeping where Nightingale says he's "Merely an interested observer." after Peter jokingly calls him "such a romantic" and I Am Climbing The Fucking Walls, Here, Ben Aaronovitch
He's so aro! 9 entire books, like 10 comics, the novellas, the various short moments that I've found so far, Not One Single Hint that this man has ever expressed romantic interest in anyone (or sexual for that matter, he is Also very ace) in all 110+ years of his life
And then there's this! "It's Valentine's Day 2016 and for a moment everyone is dreaming about what and who they love and desire the most", and Nightingale's bit is this:
Major Nightingale alone in his much too comfortable Regency bed, dreams of mortar fire amongst the pine trees and the faces of the long dead friends he left on a mountainside in Germany. Boy’s Own to the last, he turns to make his stand as the panzers and the things that are not panzers come boiling out of the treeline. He has done this before and he is willing to do it again, except the dead keep asking him why he is still fighting this particular battle. And to his surprise he doesn’t have an answer. ‘Go home,’ they cry. ‘Or you’ll never see what happened next.’
This! Man! Is! Aroace!
His relationship drama is all about his friends and his sense of duty and his role as a mentor and I Am Going Slowly Mad over the fact that it's Not Quite Canon but also not remotely contradicted by anything in canon either. And the themes! Fuck, all the themes of loneliness and isolation and reconnecting to the world through his job and teaching and the friends that he makes are all So resonant with the idea of him being aroace. Put on a pedestal by his peers, the last man standing, the Nightingale, a man born in 1900 living in the 21st century, everything that's going on with him is about being a little bit apart from the people around him, marked as different, and in a lot of ways he is different. And he has never once reminisced about some long lost love or been indicated to have ever pursued a romantic relationship and the most meaningful people in his life are the friends that he lost and the friends that he's gained. Can You See Why I Am Climbing The Walls
And I'm still stressed out about getting invested in this one because it's literally never Actually There, I've been disappointed so many times with aroace headcanons, but I can't help it this time, It's Right There, Staring Me In The Face and I Need it to be true. Just Fucking Once I want a favourite character who could plausibly be like me to Actually Be Like Me, is that too much to fucking ask?
#wizard nonsense tag#leaving this one untagged and unrebloggable sorry#too many bad experiences with how fandom treats aspec headcanons#but i'm planning on dying on this hill actually#personal stuff

Tribute Games has released side-scrolling action platformer Panzer Paladin for PlayStation 4 via PlayStation Store and Xbox One via Microsoft Store for $19.99.

Even all the armies of the world can’t stop them, but humanity has one final ace in the hole: a cutting edge power armor called Paladin. It’s now up to the strong-willed android named Flame to become a Squire, take control of the Paladin and track down all Weapon Keepers and their diabolical leader. The showdown between mankind’s highest technological prowesses and the powerful forces of the occult has begun! Seize weapons from the denizens of the Netherworld and dish out a taste of their own medicine! Show them the power of cutting edge technology combined with swordsmanship. Slash, bash and thrust your way through a series of mind-blowing levels located around the world, all of it rendered in glorious 8-bit graphics! Hop in your Panzer Paladin and take up arms!
Key Features

Robots meet demons! Crush the forces of the occult with the power of cutting edge technology!
Over 100 melee weapons to seize from enemies!
Use weapons profusely: wield, throw, or shatter them!
Snap a weapon in half to cast a powerful spell!
Slash, bash and thrust your way through 17 mind-blowing levels located around the world!
Carefully crafted 8-bit graphics like you remember them!
Gameplay
Panzer Paladin is an action-platformer game featuring intuitive swordplay mechanics. The protagonist pilots a power armor called Paladin to fight giant demons by using their own weapons against them. The key components of the swordplay mechanic includes the ability to equip and use any weapon dropped by defeated enemies, high versus low attacking and blocking, a rock-paper-scissor weapon type system that grants attack bonuses, and the ability to cast spells by breaking weapons. Weapons abound in levels, so the player is encouraged to use them profusely. The Paladin is the main means to fight enemies but players can eject and also play as the swifter and smaller pilot called a Squire. The Squire uses a laser whip to attack enemies, swing across gaps, and recharge the Paladin’s energy. Panzer Paladin lets the player choose the order in which to complete the first 10 levels of the game. The last 6 levels must be played in a linear fashion.
Story
Giant weapons—swords, lances, hammers—hailing from the dark depths of space, blazed across the sky and pierced through historic locations all around the world. Like a declaration of war against mankind, the Parthenon, atop the Acropolis of Athens, was first to be cut right through by an ominous blade. Upon impact, each of the weapons opened a breach in the fabric of reality and unleashed legions of colossal demons. In anticipation of such unforeseen Earth-threatening events, the International Security Council had formed Gauntlet, a science committee developing super sophisticated defense technologies. Gauntlet discovers that denizens of the Netherworld can only be obliterated by their own weapons. Spirit Weapons are forged with spirits of the deceased and humans can’t brandish them without becoming corrupt by their foul power… However, a machine would be immune to demonic corruption! Gauntlet recommissions Flame, a former rescue operations android, to become a Squire and take control of the last remaining Paladin unit, a state of the art power armor capable of wielding Spirit Weapons. To arms! Overseeing their operations from aboard the Avalon, their flying headquarters, Gauntlet is ready. The showdown between mankind’s highest technological prowesses and the powerful forces of the occult has begun! It’s up to Squire Flame and her Paladin named Grit to defeat all Weapon Keepers, and ultimately face off against Ravenous, the sinister leader of the invasion.

Sometimes I have a rough time imagining what Katsuki would regularly listen to for music. General consensus is rock / metal music, obviously. But there's so many subgenres to that too: we're looking at combinations like alternative, pop, synth, grunge, electronic, punk, progressive...
I also listen to rock a lot. Linkin Park, Shinedown, Starset, Fall Out Boy, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe - it's my go-to genre, and you'd think that'd help, but LMAO I don't want my taste to influence his.
I could say that Katsuki would listen to at least some of them, but I lowkey think he'd also go with more local bands too; you know, like ONE OK ROCK, or MAN WITH A MISSION. Those are popular + recognisable Japanese rock bands - and lmao, the latter did Merry-Go-Round, the second opening of season 5 - but I think he'd like those bands.
Oh, and Rammstein. He's a fucking nerd who named his moves HOWITZER Impact and Strafing PANZER. (And to add onto his huge fucking nerdiness, I bet he listens to Sabaton, because I am 99% certain that he's a history nerd and that's why he's using Prussian / German terms to name his ultimate moves.)
He does like some pop music though; there's an occasional cherry-picked song among the multitude of rock and metal, but he'd rather die than admit them.
#💥 | I’D DEFEND KATSUKI BEFORE MYSELF. ╱ ooc.#💥 | ARROGANT BOY‚ CALM LIKE A BOMB. ╱ hc.#/ i was thinking very hard about this and this is my conclusion#/ he falls asleep listening to this music too fr like if you tune in#/ and u hear rock blasting thru his headphones while he's resting#/ don't be surprised#/ it's his favourite genre. end of story

A trend I’ve noticed out of Japanese series involving war, which primarily have a strongly anti-war approach is like... It is a lot more rare to depict a realistic conflict You have a lot of series about futuristic, sci-fi wars. You have a lot of alternative World Wars with added magic or a blatantly unrealistic vibe. You have a lot of fantasy wars. But once you start getting into the realistic war machines? You very often start getting stuff cut with other forms of ridiculousness. Girl Und Panzer is a series that loves war machines and military history openly. But it feels the need to place this in a setting and genre which can never be mistaken for a realistic setting, despite the blatant love of history and war machines. Metal Gear is deep into politics and theories... But still feels the need to have men who control swarms of bees, open elements of comedy and camp, and of course, giant robots. Valkyria Chronocles 4 and Fuga both contain a metaphor where children are fed into a literal war machine in order to achieve victory - but the settings themselves are best described as “Outwardly Anime.” Even the Ace Combat series, about cool fighter pilots in a rather realistic setting, feels the need to not just push technology to unrealistic levels, but to set the world in an entire parallel earth with a different history Meanwhile, those series I can think of which are historical and which DO delve into the realistic trauma of war? It’s usually aimed at civilians, far away from the conflict... Barefoot Gen, Grave of the Fireflies, etc I’ve heard this old quote; “There is no such thing as an anti-war film.” It’s about this idea where, by presenting a war as something we see on screen, we will always have this detachment about what is happening. We cannot, truly, experience a horror of war, and so the battles we see will always be spectacle no matter how horrific. Most western series depicting war attempt to push the idea that was is hell and show a realistic display of it. War is presented as gritty, and realistically. But, with a lot of media out of Japan, what I notice is the opposite - War is usually not even depicted as a realistic thing. War, thus, is not glamourized, because what you are seeing is unmistakably NOT how war is. You understand that war is not fought with magic-users and mecha, or ancient battle tanks - These things are fun fiction to hook you. But the underlying ideas will still comment on war, as it applies to reality, albeit often in an allegorical fashion. You end up with a juxtaposition that can feel weird if you are not used to it, where a lot of these series are simultaneously about the short-skirted anime girl antics, but also about how the machinations of countries are totally willing to use young people as utterly disposable pawns if it means even small victories.

Learning to paint miniatures: Zombie Horde Fatty
Zombicide: Black Plague is my favorite tabletop game (although I have recently discovered Carcasonne and it is climbing the charts). It combines my husband’s interest in zombies and my love of medieval roleplaying into a game we can both enjoy. As a long-time Dungeons and Dragons player, I was looking for a game I could play with just my husband since I don’t have any friends who play. We tried this and I fell in love. Not just with the game itself but with the miniatures.
I did a little research and settled on Vallejo Model Color paints and I have never looked back. Oh, I own some others Games Workshop like their technical paints, but my base set is Vallejo. They are SO much cheaper. I buy mine from Midwest Model Railroad https://midwestmodelrr.com/ $2.67 a dropper bottle. Seriously, cheap. Easy to buy enough to offset having to pay for shipping. Their selection is incredible and shipping is fast and easy.
Zombicide: Black Plague opened up a whole new hobby of miniature painting that I had not gotten into when I played D&D as we didn’t use miniatures, strictly paper, pencil and dice, old school. I’m now obsessed, before long I will have every color Vallejo Model Color makes and I have started venturing into Game, Nocturna, Panzer Aces, etc.
Here’s why I love Vallejo though, you can paint over black with a single coat of white and it’s gone. Smooth even coverage, consistency across bottles. Very rarely have I come across a bottle that was not up to straight-out-of-the-bottle base coat par. Pigmentation is phenomenal. You can dilute it to a wash without losing any quality. It dries insanely fast but wait... there’s more...
Vallejo Model Color was designed for diorama use by model train enthusiasts. While it dries to the touch within minutes, it actually takes a week or more for full drying to set in and once that happens the color becomes far more permanent and is able to withstand a lot more manhandling so it’s perfect for pieces you actually play with not just stick on a shelf. You may notice the bottle DO NOT say NON-TOXIC on them. While they aren’t lead or alcohol based, try not to over-lick your brushes. There’s no odor and I haven’t died or gotten sick yet, but I suspect this is why they dry and adhere so strongly. Someday I’ll do some research and let you know.
I love Vallejo Model Color it is an incredible way to start miniature painting and you’ll never need to trade in or stop using them because you got better. Absolutely worth the small investment. Buy a starter set on Amazon, primer, and some cheap detail brushes and you are ready to roll.

On the subject of Revolving Door's WW2 chapters (Ace / Low-Pressure Thunderstorm / Supercell) and historical accuracy
(And more specifically about my tag comments on my previous reblog.)
I've been on several military bases before, both currently in use and historic. I've frequently interacted with colonial British WW2-era cannons and bunkers just sitting on the beach/in the park in my teenhood. (Comes with the territory of being from one of the most militarised nations in the world per capita.)
Generally, I feel like that would allow me to make a good intuitive guess about what the layout/floorplan of a British barracks in Europe would look like.
Even then, because I had readers who had literally served in the army and/or studied warfare as a special interest, I spent a combined 2 years fretting about the research for the chapters listed in the title.
Now the context to this is that Revolving Door features an alternate history, in which World War 2 progresses along a rather different trajectory than in our world. Planning this out involved...inventing military operations and strategic manoeuvres, putting military groups where they decidedly were not, and entirely changing the shape of the Western Front towards the end of the war. And a lot of my worrying/research was on themes such as:
What would the floorplan of a barracks in Dunkirk look like?
Did Bletchley Park have a fire alarm?
Did the phrase "OK" exist in the English language at the time?
In what way can electric damage most efficiently put a Panzer III out of commission?
What model/sub-type of military aircraft would have flown the troop from England to Hungary?
What would the interior of a 1940s British commanding officer's home look like?
Which battles of World War 2 would it make sense for the British army to drop special ops troops into?
Will these very specific, targeted strategic manoeuvres really result in the war ending earlier?
Now, I think when I revisit the story, I feel a little more charitable about potentially fudging the facts. War is a complex, messy thing, and produces some of the most horrific and also the most extraordinary stories in human history. To try and derive a moral from the entire happening, or even a unifying thematic thread to it all, is to misunderstand war at its core.
And who's to say that my version of the above things couldn't happen, in an alternate history where a person who can volitionally generate and store electricity exists?
As long as I know what my story is about, and it's not flying directly in the face of crucial truths that would be disrespectful to change, then why can't I just make some shit up?
I've done some excessive things for the sake of accuracy, from going on Google Maps walks along the routes that my characters would take, to taking day-long museum trips, to theoretically booking air tickets, to literally visiting the cities that the stories are set in/inspired by (I've done this with four different locales in RD so far). I've made paper models of my characters' vessels, read academic papers, and interviewed specialists.
But I need to remind myself not everything is an academic document. It's my habit to fact-check everything, but at some point, the fact-checking blocks the creative process. I'm a writer, not an historian (not really).

Characters in Girls und Panzer (Oarai)
Panzer IV (Anglerfish)
Inhabitants: Command Squad
Team Role: The Hero
The Panzer IV was the most generic universal of the German tanks before the introduction of the kitties. Because of this it has the perfect balancing act of capability and inability, forcing them to struggle for anything, but also capable of doing everything. Perfect for a Hero.
Has the most character development throughout the series, largely through the use of mod. kits.
Type 89 (Duck)
Inhabitants: Wannabe Volleyball Club (they only have four members, which is too small to form a school club)
Team Role: The Heart
The Type 89 was designed to be able to navigate small mountain paths. This makes it the weakest but most nimble of the tanks, and is often given the role light duties, like scouting and harrying. Extra points for having the unique ability to launch smoke grenades in every direction due to the Volleyball Players.
StuG III (Hippo)
Inhabitants: History Club
Team Role: They want to be the Brains, but are actually the Big Guy. Their knowledge of history has taught them that being unflappable is most important thing when Holding the Line. Well, that and a big gun.
The StuG III replaced the turret from a Panzer III with a casemate howitzer. It was originally going to be an assault gun, but proved so useful as a Tank Destroyer that they were produced en-masse. So en-masse that they were the single most produced tank in Germany during WWII.
M3 Lee (Rabbit)
Inhabitants: 1st Years
Team Role: The Chick
The M3 Lee was created because HOLY FUCKING SHIT! WE NEED A TANK! NO! BIGGER GUN!
There was a dire need to get a tank that could be fielded as quickly as possible. They also knew they needed a bigger gun than they could rightly fit in a turret. The result was the most useful of the Battleship Tanks. Tanks with multiple turrets. It has a 37mm cannon in it’s turret. The 37mm was fantastic when they started to make a tank, but new German tanks proved to be immune to this. So, they decided to also add a 75mm cannon in a casemate. They also added machineguns every. Since Girls und Panzer is about tank v. tank combat, machineguns rarely become relevant.
When the British got the Lees, they proceeded to change the gun to a British gun of similar use and remove most of the machineguns.
M3′s were ungainly tall. Their turret gun was not good enough to actually be used on most enemy tanks and mostly used for support. The hull gun was strong enough. This allows it to do pretty much anything, but never the best.
Pz38(t) (Turtle)
Inhabitants: Absurdly Powerful Student Council
Team Role: The Brains
The Pz38(t) was built by Czechoslovakia, and like most Czech weapons, was quickly put to use by the Germans. A good, solid tank at the start of the war, but like most early war tanks was quickly outclassed.
Later upgraded to a Hetzer Tank Destroyer.
Char B1 (Mallard)
Inhabitants: Hall Monitors
Team Role: Sixth Ranger
The Char B1 was created for something that ceased to exist, so they put a simple one-man turret on top of it. It was designed to crawl across a battlefield, and put a howitzer straight into an enemy bunker. The turret was a single man, which means one man is doing the Commander, Gunner, and Loader roles, but this also meant it could be bigger. The Char B1 was notable for a few last stands where they destroyed entire troops of enemy panzers. Later in the war is lost it’s lustre, but early war is was more powerful than anything else.
Type 3 (Anteater)
Inhabitants: Video Gaming
Team Role: The Ace (extremely skilled, but low real-life experience)
The Type 3 was a later-war tank with good all around stats. The catch is that they were never actually used. They were saved for homeland defence.
Porsche Tiger (Leopon, because... Ligers are cool?)
Inhabitants: Automotive Club
Team Role: Sixth Ranger
The Tiger, especially a King Tiger, were the kings of the battlefield. The big problem with them was German tank doctrine that refused to modify, despite the fact that the role it was created for was eliminated. Tigers were also notoriously prone to mechanical failure. The Tiger was created as a breakthrough tank, but was introduced when the Germans were entirely on the defensive. If they had built anti-tank guns instead of Tigers, they might have won the war.
Now, the Porsche Tiger was a failed prototype for it that was even more prone to mechanical failure. Hence why it’s run by the Automotive Club. In practical terms, the inclusion of the Porsche Tiger would prevent the Automotive Club from doing the other modifications, but this is apparently a perfect world.
Well, Middle School girls are undergoing PERFECTLY SAFE WWII live-fire tank battles on modified aircraft carriers. I guess.
