#WorldbuildingWednesday Fauna of the Ennead: Introduction
It’s about time I post more about the spec-evo side of my writing. On Earth, the evolution of life has been defined by occasional mass extinction events which often form the boundary between geologic periods, such as the Great Dying (the Permian-Triassic extinction event). In the Ennead, such extinction events did occur, but were spread out across nine planets; migration between the Nine, however, was almost always impossible due to a great everstorm blocking the portals. The result is the preservation of ancient species in some planets while others evolve and diversify after their own extinction events, with very occasional mass migrations when Abations briefly opened the portals.
By the present day, TA 2605, each of the Nine feature unique flora and fauna which roughly correspond to different geological time periods of Earth. Eutopos is home to “egg mammals” descended primarily from Permian fauna; Sassan features huge chalicotheres and other Paleogene fauna; Maurya is home to Cretaceous dinosaurs. Other planets have their own unique fauna mixed from many different geologic periods. There is of course nuance, and all of these “Permian” “Cretaceous” etc animals have continuously evolved and continue evolving through the present day.
Xia, the setting of the novel, is closest to modern Earth fauna, with the obvious addition of kites (pterosaurs) and other flyers. Our main characters are familiar with hawks, dogs, cows, bears, squirrels, etc – but they are also familiar with domesticated shield gaur (ceratops), rani (ankylosaurs), and tuskies (diictodons), as well as wild forestwalker kites (quetzalcoatlus) and even sparrowkites (anurognathids).

Some more #paleostream sketches.
Although these don't have much paleo in them, you see here some of my interpretations of various Rhinogrades, a fictional mammal clade and one of the oldest instances of speculative evolution.

i do like a calendar system in games where there are festival days and birthdays and the seasons change, but the issue of where it tracks in game time elapsed in years is that this is one of the first areas in a game where narrative immersion starts to fray apart for me. I’m on like Year 21 of Paleo Pines. A moment for me years ago when I was in Stardew Valley was seeing someone’s playthrough where they were on Year 100. Nothing had changed at all - how could it be expected to - I wasn’t under the illusion I wasn’t playing a game in a fictional setting, but there’s something that becomes uncanny about that small narrative reality disconnect. The characters aren’t going to acknowledge it - what are they to do; should your wife go “Can you believe it’s been 50 whole years since you first arrived here, it feels like just yesterday!” and she looks exactly the same as she did as does everybody and your child has been a baby exactly the same as they were for 45 years? I think a lot of these games bank on the fair assumption that the player will eventually be fulfilled and leave off at a reasonable point of years in of their own accord, but for the people most devoted to the fantasy of the game to stay in it for much longer past that point, is that not all the more subtly jarring to witness. 100 annual summer festivals

Welcome!
Hello, everyone, and welcome to our little patch of heaven! I know I made an intro post before, but I feel that it’s become outdated already. So, after this post has been submitted, the old one will be unpinned, and possibly deleted, along with the original system intro post. Because all of our info will be in this one submission! Now, without any further delays, let’s get started!
About the Host
My name is Shane, but you can also call me Sylum! I’m 30 years old. I’m physically disabled, chronically ill, and I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and inattentive type ADHD. I’m part of the Alterhuman community, meaning that I don’t psychologically identify as a human (This can also include spiritually for some people, but not me.). More specifically, I’m primarily fictionkin. I identify as an individual member of a fictional species known as the Buma from Final Fantasy VII– even more specifically, a subspecies that I developed, called the Icicle Variant. If you’d like to know more, please feel free to message me.
My secondary kintype is shapeshifter. A paleo shapeshifter to be more precise, meaning that I can mentally shift to any extinct species at any given time. So you may wind up talking to a living, breathing dinosaur at some point.
My third kintype is the mythical Kirin/Qilin, a creature that's said to descend from the Chinese Long dragon, or are associated with the Japanese god, Raijin.
Important Info: Due to my anxiety, I may not reach out to anyone outside the system. If you’d like to talk, please send a DM. Please be patient with me, as it may take a bit for me to respond. If anyone’s up front aside from myself, they may answer in my stead. Please be aware that some system mates aren’t social. So I apologize in advance if they come off as rude.
Now, it’s time for the fun part! Let’s meet the system!
Note: I’ve decided to use an almost sci-fi space marine/military naming theme in regards to their roles. (I’m a nerd. Shush./j) Please be aware that the guys aren’t all like their source materials.
The Red Star System
Let’s get one, very important detail out of the way: We are an Endogenic System, meaning that we don’t stem from trauma of any sort. If you would like to know about non-traumagenic plurality, please check out the ICD-11, as it’s a tad more in date than the DSM-5. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get on with member introductions!
Good afternoon! I’m Knockout, the Chief Medical Officer of the Red Star System. My job is to make sure that the host’s body is well taken care of. Everything from reminding Shane to eat, to administering medication, to checking blood sugar is my responsibility. I’m often at the front whenever Shane experiences some form of medical issue. Or, when he goes to see a human doctor. I often help him cope with medical anxiety whenever it rears its ugly head. Please note that, due to my job as a medic back home, that I may not respond to questions or comments right away. And please don’t ask me for medical advice. I may be the Chief Medical Officer here, but that doesn’t mean I know everything about human biology.
Heyya! I’m Breakdown! I’m kinda like a nurse, which is also what I am back home! I help Knockout with medical stuff in the field, and I help take care of Shane! I also double as a Security Officer. Ya know, making sure that our little guy’s safe and sound! I usually come out whenever there’s a physical problem that needs solving; like figuring out the safest place to park his chair. It doesn’t sound like much, but I promise you that it’s important work! Like Knockout, I might be busy with other things, so I might not answer right away.
Greetings. I am Starscream, the Commander– though Shane insists that rank and duty are two separate things here. Regardless, my job is to ensure our host’s physical safety, as well as maintain his psychological security. I am often at the front whenever he is under extreme stress, and needs to be removed from the situation. I am a boundary enforcer; I make sure that certain lines are not crossed. I suggest you tread carefully, unless you wish to face my wrath.
Hi there! I’m Nanaki, and I’m one of the system’s Councilors! My job is to help Shane through some psychological issues. I don’t counsel him in regards to severe problems, like his depression spikes, but I can help him with his anxiety. I can also be a listening ear if he needs to vent. Please remember that I’m considered a minor in human culture, so please don’t mention anything adult whenever I’m at the front, okay?
Name’s Cloud. I’m a Security Officer– which means that I protect Shane from anything, or anyone, that might hurt him. I’m always on the clock, so if anyone tries anything, you’ll have to deal with me.
Hola! My name is Miguel O’Hara, and I’m the system’s head Security Officer. I usually front whenever Shane feels threatened by someone/something. Or, if he’s experiencing acute distress. If anyone gets particularly outta line, it’s my job to make sure they get back in line. Because I’m my universe’s Spider-Man, and a protector of the multiverse, I might not be around all that much. However, I’ll try to respond, or post, whenever I have the time.
Sup? I'm Hawks, better known as Keigo in some circles on here. I'm Shane's social manager and social regulator. Whenever he needs help navigating social situations, or just needs a break from social demands, I swoop in and save the day! If you ever DM us or send us asks, the chances of me answering are actually pretty high! I'm around pretty often, so don't be surprised if you see yellow text!
Hey. My name is Kai Chisaki, also known as Overhaul. I don't really go by that anymore; it leaves a bad taste in my mouth whenever I hear it. I'm a Medical Officer, which means I'm usually in Co-con, helping Shane with his medical anxiety, or making sure he takes care of himself. Unlike most of the people here, I'll be around pretty often. Though, I might not answer any DMs or asks.
Sup? I'm Toya. I'm a protector and boundary enforcer. I keep people in line so Shane doesn't have to worry about 'em. I'm usually nice--as long as ya don't fuck with him. If ya wanna talk to me, just drop a DM, or ask, or somethin'. I don't care. If Shane gets spooked and birdbrain ain't around, you'll likely be dealin' with me, so don't be shocked if I reply to ya.

Species: Gargoyleocephale ("Gargoyle Head") Clade: Pachycephalosauridae Diet: Omnivorous Size: 12 ft Habitat: Open Savannahs Threat Level: 4/5 (If Provoked) Group Orientation: Herds Fun Facts:
Gargoyleocephale is the largest member of the pachycephalosaurs in Ainrann, or thick-headed “bone headed” dinosaurs. They are known to be defensive and very strong, but unlike other members of their species the males often use their horn-crests to intimidate their opponents before head-butting is resorted to.
They live in small herds, but Gargoyleocephale have high social orders not commonly found in other dinosaur species. They are protective of their young and will give chase to small predators on sight, arkians included. Although intimidation is all they usually need, Gargoyleocephale will not hesitate to use head-butting on other species of animals if they deem it necessary. However, a large predator like Thanatotitan or Torvochelotyrannus would be out of the question and flight is the only method available.
Gargoylocephale primarily eats plants but the teeth they have in their mouths allows them to consume meat as well, making them omnivorous. They did not hunt for their food, however, they instead consumed insects, small reptiles, and occasionally carrion.

The fun part with this is that there already is some crossover between aliens or UFO encounters and cryptid folklore. Now, this does betray that, to some degree, modern folklore has taken a more science-adjacent tone. You can see this in terminology. Instead of folklore, we have pseudo-science fields like cryptozoology or parapsychology.
The difference between cyptozoology and folklore centering on strange creatures in the forest is simply that we, as individuals, would like to see ourselves as less superstitious, and more rational, than those who came before us. And those who came before us felt the same way about their predecessors. The terminology changes, but the underlying idea of looking for something inexplicable, or finding something new remains the same. This is something you may want to keep in mind while creating new strands of pseudoscience to account for the supernatural creatures in your world.
The irony is, in scratching off the comic book approach, you're skipping over something interesting and fun. What happens when the supernatural creatures of folklore and myth are aliens? Erich von Dänikenis probably the most prominent advocate for this idea. If you've ever seen Stargate, his idea of, “paleo-contact,” and the idea is that major mythological figures were aliens should be familiar. This is specifically a branch of pseudo-archeology and psuedo-history.
It's not hard to spin this off into the idea of, “supernatural,” creatures that are actually exiled aliens. The Fey are particularly good for this, if you've spent any significant time looking at Celtic myths, though this also works with any sufficiently detailed pantheon. Again, that's basically the route Stargate went with the Egyptian pesedjet, and gradually expanding into more cultures as the TV series' continued. This is also the route Marvel went with Thor, meaning this is, literally, a comic book approach.
While the actual comic book is much darker, the original Men in Black film does a wonderful job of existing as a quasi-fever-dream suggestion for a world where supernatural entities operate as a kind of police force regulating visiting extraterrestrials. The technology they're playing with is said to be of alien origin, but really, we're solidly in Clarke's Third Law territory here.
The fuzzy territory Men in Blackbrings into focus also illustrates one difficulty with this idea. The difference between an extraterrestrial and a fey or demon is the perspective you bring to the discussion. They're allalien beings. Aliens have become a new form of outside creature. The difference between the premise of War of the Worldsand Doom II lies in the aesthetics of the monsters that came from Mars. This doesn't mean you can't use both, but you should be aware that they will naturally, “fill the same slot,” in your story, and it's something to be conscious of. At the same time, this also creates a natural delineation if you want to mix and match different approaches to the supernatural and aliens.
The short version of this idea is that you can divide most supernatural fiction into a few general approaches. Either the monsters are hidden from the world via some (probably magical or technological) means, hidden via their own actions (which is to say, staying hidden), or they're a part of the daily world. With some play between the second and third category depending on how many people are in on the secret. Mixing fantasy monsters and aliens gives you a good excuse for why one group might fall into one of the above categories while another does not, and allows for some wild combinations. Such as a world where aliens are a part of everyday life, but the supernatural is hidden by some mystical veil, a world where aliens hide among the population using technology while monsters try desperately to avoid being discovered by the modern world, or a world where supernatural beings are simply a part of everyday life, but the world is currently under a covert alien onslaught. Really, there are a lot of options here, and the only limit is your creativity.
I will say, this is something that is tailor made to have fun with. It's is a wild mix, and there is a lot of freedom to how you approach this, including a lot of ways you can shake up conventional interactions between the groups.
