Just a couple of sketches of the alien shrimp bois I wanted to share—the Nar-Haan! They’re a peaceful, tribal-like civilization living deep within the caves of Blue Moon, a rogue planet orbiting a black hole. With Blue Moon, I wanted to emphasize the idea that life always finds a way—even in the most extreme and unexpected conditions.

The Nar-Haan never developed advanced technology, but they use bio-organic gadgets powered by natural biological processes to help them in their daily lives. While their intelligence is high enough that they could become a spacefaring species if someone uplifted them, nobody even knows they exist—until the crew randomly encounters one of them: Vek-Tor (the one with the purple face).

The only light source in the Nar-Haan’s caves comes from bioluminescent fungi growing along the ceilings. However, their environment is usually very dark, which is why their most important body regions can emit pulses of light to communicate over long distances.

When interacting up close, they use their feelers to physically connect, exchanging brain signals directly. This allows them to understand each other’s thoughts and even emotions without words. Their entire form of communication is based on electrical signals rather than spoken language.

I’ve already written some pages about their culture and other details, but I don’t have much time to fully develop them at the moment. I might, though—depending on how much people want to see more of these guys, lol. I’ve just been and still am extremely busy drawing art for our overall setting.

Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to develop Blue Moon in its entirety someday. It’s been my passion project for years—a way to explore a strange planetary environment in deep detail. Aside from my character (the Commander), it’s the only thing that truly reflects how emotionally connected and fascinated I feel to space and evolution as a whole.

Zens species

The Zens are a sophont plantoid species with bodies formed through cycles of growth, shedding, and renewal. They arose from the tangled roots of their homeworld which they used to share with the Kix, an insectoid sophont with whom they formed a delicate, symbiotic relationship-, one created via mutual survival rather than prior servitude. Where the Kix contribute motion and efficiency, the Zens add patience and wisdom, and their civilizations intertwine like the ecosystems that gave life to them. This friendship is no longer as strong as it once was due to decades of modernization and galactic movement, to the point the Zens forced the Kix to look for a new planet for their own. Their cultures are becoming exceedingly less dependent on one another and efforts to repair the ecological damage caused by the Kix's prior aggressive industrialization are still underway by the Zens. Playing in the snow

Here we see a young Iyam-ru pair from planet Persus playing together in the snow. Being such intelligent animals comes with both advantages and disadvantages-, as these avians often find themselves growing bored and seeking entertainment in anything they can find. In this scenario, they're simply enjoying their time together, with the male munching on a snowball he made and the female jealously pecking after him for a piece of it.

Here’s something wholesome.  

Eight sometimes falls asleep while listening to Vektor’s brainwaves when she’s tuned in for too long. He doesn’t understand why, but it creates moments of quiet serenity between them… not that he’s complaining.  

His feelers can attach to her neural implant nodes, which connect directly to her brain. Normally, these nodes are meant to interface with the Archframe, but in this case, they allow Eight to understand Vektor without knowing a single word of the Haan language, simply by interpreting. Since the Haan communication is entirely based on electric signals and hormonal/chemical exchange, this connection lets them share emotions and some related thought processes directly with one another.

The Haan experience emotions on a far more complex level than humans, and… well, it can be a bit overwhelming for Eight at times since she is a human. Which is why she falls asleep.

In our stories, Vektor will receive a translator so the rest of the crew can understand him better, too, and Eight doesn’t always have to connect with him. They shrimply do not understand his exotic ways.
