I have absolutely no fucking clue what to say so I'm just gonna explain the idea here

This is some art I made of Sae's cognition of Akechi! I made him a card dealer since detectives give prosecutors evidence. The cardboard crown is supposed to represent Akechi's fame and reputation. How unstable and fragile it is and how fake his behavior feels a lot of the time he's on TV. With the little good job star one might get as a child for doing something simple stuck on, plus his little A logo on his briefcase for fun.

I’ve been doing some stream of consciousness thoughts re: Akechi and I think my final opinion on that whole situation is just… it sucks.

Like I’m not going to say “woe is he” or anything because boy, what are you doing. What the hell are you doing. You doomed yourself!!! Because of your own stupid pride!!! Akechi.

But I’m not going to say “cool motive still murder” either because. Can you imagine. Being that lonely and that hungry for anything resembling affection and pride in your person that you’d shatter yourself into pieces just to find a shard that they like best because you’ve grown up being told again and again that you are unwanted and unloveable as you are. Fundamentally. And all you have is this singular drive that makes you feel worse and worse about who you actually are inside so you double down on your fake image because at least fickle fame is better than nothing and it’s all you’re going to get at this point, but at the same time this drive is also the one thing you feel you’ve had any power to determine or enact, and you did it all yourself when the world expected nothing of value from you, so yeah, of course you’d pursue it harder to the point of violently self-destructing - only for that all to get wrenched away with “you never fooled me and I was just puppeteering you all along and I never needed you”, pulling the rug out from under your vengeful purpose, your autonomous image, and your starved core desire, all at once. And then your asshole dad’s twisted headspace image of you shoots you point blank.

He dooms himself because he thought he was already doomed. Caught up in a cycle of cruelty to both himself and others, that he saw no point in trying to escape from, and didn’t want to, because it would mean relinquishing the (it turns out) quite fragile image he’d painstakingly built up. He’s a product of his environment, which led to him making god-awful choices, which in turn trapped him in a worse environment. How many people have died here or become grievously injured as a result of it all.

What do I even do with this. It just all around sucks.

No one NO ONE is out here cockblocking themself like XW. You thought his greatest skill was political scheming? No, sorry, you were wrong. His biggest skill is sabotaging his own romance. He starts by convincing his lady love that she's an irritating political ally AT BEST and at worst, is a threat he'd kill as easily as swatting a mosquito. Every time he's kind to her or helps her, has MUST end the interaction with a nasty comment and a death threat. Then he moves on to alienating her father, even though they are political allies, so that her family will definitely be against any kind match. He's doing all this on purpose, while also trying to romance Ning-er.

preliminary akechi palace au thoughts!

goro akechi. tokyo. reality television show.

upon entering his palace, you find yourself on the set of a fusion reality/game show, and are greeted by one of akechi's shadows, the hero prince. he is bright and always smiling, fluctuating in age but generally either around nine or fifteen. sometimes, he will briefly excuse himself so a member of the television crew can give him a new face with which to replace the current one, obscuring the nothingness underneath. emotional distress, especially anger and embarrassment, will cause his face to crack like a porcelain doll.

the hero prince is the star of the show. he is good at everything, and everyone loves him. he's the audience favorite! he wins every challenge on the show, and will swear it isn't scripted - he's just that good! really!

it's impossible to make much progress, let alone find the treasure, during this first visit. you're stuck on the set, and you can play televised games against akechi and the other contestants, but akechi will always win and his demeanor will never shift. he is popular, he is perfect, he is loved. everything is about him. there are cameras everywhere, eyes everywhere.

to proceed, you have to let his real self know that you know he isn't perfect, that everything is an act. and the next time you enter, the facade will have cracked. the hero prince will follow you instead of guiding you this time, and he's obviously being controlled by puppet strings. his face will crack much more often, and he'll ask for attention and validation a lot.

you like me, right? hey, look at this! one time, we played a game, and the way i won was so smart, listen to me! you like me, right? do you love me? do you enjoy my company? am i bothering you?

if you give him enough validation, the palace will begin to repair itself and lock you out of further progress again. if you ignore him, he will become increasingly desperate, and the palace will become more hostile, with more high-level shadows appearing. if you tell him you don't like him, he will attack you then and there, but retreat if it seems like he's losing, and will not interact with you again. if you participate in challenges this time, a cognition of joker will be playing as well, and he will have essentially taken akechi's place. he'll always win, everyone loves him, he's wonderful and perfect to an almost cartoonish degree. but he'll be extremely nice to akechi no matter what, even as the other competitors begin to laugh and make fun of him if you play multiple games. pictures, statues, posters, and the like of akechi will have been replaced by joker as well.

eventually, you might be able to find your way backstage. here, you can see the scripts, the teleprompters, the rigging - how everything about akechi is fake. everything is scripted, his victories are choreographed. you can hear the crew members bad mouthing him, calling him worthless and stupid and ugly, both generally and in very specific and incredibly personal ways. no one actually wants him there. some will even talk about wanting to hurt or kill him. the cameras and eyes will become more apparent and unsettling, this time obviously not part of the controlled environment of the tv crew.

aaaand that's all i have for now! :D

I really hope my brain automates this process one day cause right now the only way I can remember the difference between 上 and 下 is by remembering wolfram calls his mom 母上 and that one of the authors of tactics is 木下さくら. it's an incredibly slow mental process but it gets the job done I suppose

The reason I think Black Mask Crow will be a separate unit from Prince Crow

In P5R Akechi plays differently after he drops the Detective Prince facade, it’s not just a cosmetic change.  Loki is a separate Persona from Robin Hood, he has a new all-out attack, his attitude has changed (which would likely translate into a different highlight attack in terms of P5X gameplay), etc.  This would make him a lot more complicated than the average P5X unit.  That’s extra effort for a character that as far as we know isn’t going to properly appear.

It would a a lot simpler and easier to just make the two sides of Akechi into two different units.  And as a bonus, this means that you can get fans who want him to pull for two versions instead of one.

Even accounting for costume changes it’s probably easier to program it so that if you buy a skin for one version it applies to both.  Or maybe they’ll just make you buy them twice (this is a money-hungry gacha game after all.)

Of course this all assumes that Black Mask Akechi will be in the game at all, which as you pointed out is not guaranteed.  ATLUS has been weird about promoting him in the past because they apparently care deeply about spoilers.

Fair enough! I do agree Black Mask is more elaborate than just cosmetic changes, so you may have a point that he just makes more sense to be separate instead. I think my biggest reason for suggesting maybe he’d be cosmetic is that otherwise, it’d be possible to have (technically) two Akechi teammates at once? But, considering that they are just cognitive copies, maybe that isn’t actually as wild as it sounds, haha!

we always give Ryuji the palace n while thats always a hit, why dont we ever give one to Ryuji's mom??? gimme Ryuji havin to fight with his love for his mom, his need to keep her safe, and his duty as a son and phantom thief to see this through to the end and make her better but hurt in the process
