Mummy brown, also known as Egyptian brown or Caput Mortuum, was a pigment made from white pitch, myrrh and the flesh of mummies.

Despite its morally abhorrent means of production, Mummy brown was extremely popular from the mid-eighteenth to the nineteenth centuries and a favourite color among the Pre-Raphaelites. Even the infamous Eugene Delacroix' Liberty Leading the People is claimed to have been painted with mummy brown because Delacroix was "known to have used pigment made from ground mummy." As well as works from Edward Burne-Jones, who was clueless to the fact that the paint’s name was literal.
