you're in the habit of denying yourself things.
if someone asked you directly, you would say that you love a little treat. you like iced coffee and getting the cookie. you drink juice out of a fancy cup sometimes, and often do use your candles until they gutter out helplessly.
but you hesitate about buying the 20 dollar hand mixer because, like. you could just use your arms. you weren't raised rich. you don't get to just spend the 20 dollars (remember when that could cover lunch?), at least - you don't spend that without agonizing over it first, trying to figure out the cost-benefits like you are defending yourself in front of a jury. yes, this rice cooker could seriously help you. but you do know how to make stovetop rice and it really isn't that hard. how many pies or brownies would you actually make, in order to make that hand mixer worthwhile?
what's wild is that if the money was for a friend, it would already be spent. you'd fork over 40 without blinking an eye, just to make them happy. the difference is that it's for you, so you need to justify it.
and it sneaks in. you ration yourself without meaning to - you don't finish the pint of ice cream, even though you want to. the next time you go to the store, you say ah, i really shouldn't, and then you walk away. you save little bits of your precious things - just in case. sometimes you even go so far as putting that one thing in your shopping cart. and then just leaving it there, because maybe-one-day, but not right now, there's other stuff going on.
you do self-care, of course. but you don't do it more than like, 3 days in a row. after that it just feels a little bit over-the-edge. like. you can't live in decadence, the economy is so bad right now, kid.
so you don't buy the rice cooker. you can-and-will spend the time over the stove. you can withstand the little sorrows. denial and discipline are practically synonyms. and you're not spoiled.
it's just - it's not always a rice cooker. sometimes it is a person or a job or a hug. sometimes it is asking for help. sometimes it is the summer and your college degree. sometimes it is looking down at scabbed knees and feeling a strange kind of falling, like you can't even recognize the girl you used to be. sometimes it is your handprint looking unsteady.
sometimes it is tuesday, and you didn't get fired, and you want to celebrate. but what is it you like, even? you search around your little heart and come up empty. you're so used to denying that all your desires draw a blank.
oh fuck. see, this is the perfect opportunity. if you had a mixer, you'd make a cake.
#warm up#this isn't good#writeblr#this is complicated by the fact i can't stand up too long or i fuckken pass out and <3 hit my damn head <3#but i did take a deep breath and buy myself the stupid rice cooker#and!!! a very cheap sushi kit!!! i have been wanting to try making sushi for literally YEARS#the kit was only like 15 dollars!!!! and i haven't purchased it bc?!!??!?!?!?!!?#..... i didn't get the mixer tho that felt. like a lot. like too much.#on my list is a kitchenaid. one day when i get a check and i have paid off my student debt#and medical debt#i will put that first little bit of cash#into a kitchenaid 5qt stand mixer (with attachments)#i really do just go into their refurbished section and stare lustily at each option#but yeah i feel guilty about the rice cooker even tho i know for a fact this damn thing is gonna be a lifesaver#oh shit also fuck i forgot to mention . poached eggs

All I can think about recently is that there are three main career options for Grishaverse main characters:
A) Child soldier
B) Criminal
C) ✨Both✨
#and none of them are a choice#it’s very dependent on who your government is#shoutout to Nina and Matthias for really exploring all options available to them#my poor babies#inspired by convo with my sister where she said why is everyone a child soldier and I said some of them are criminals too(!)#as a side note it’s very unclear whether Grisha in Ravka get paid to be in the second army#I’m pretty sure they don’t#like at least if you’re a criminal you can make some cash#not that I’m endorsing criminal activity obvs#but at least there’s marginally more choice as a criminal#it would appear at least marginally more autonomy#crooked kingdom#shadow and bone#the grishaverse#six of crows#grishaverse#leigh bardugo#grisha trilogy#seige and storm#ruin and rising#kaz brekker#inej ghafa#jesper fahey#wylan van eck#nina zenik#Matthias helvar#alina starkov#mal oretsev#genya safin#zoya nazyelensky

Ok consider:
A new hero emerges and the Justice League watches him for a while who make sure he’s not a threat. They see this giant clumsy man who moves like he’s not used to his body, smiles goofily every time he saves someone, and is clearly inexperienced with his powers and they’re all just like. Ah. This is a child.
Except they don’t think he’s a ten year old or however old Billy is at the time, no no. Clearly this hero came into existence shortly before his first appearance, just a few months ago. They don’t know how or why but It’s not the weirdest thing they’ve seen so it’s pretty easy to believe.
But they can’t just leave this toddler with the powers of a god to stumble around and potentially hurt someone by accident, nor go down the wrong path and become a villain. So of course they decide to ‘subtly’ guide him without alerting him to the fact they’re onto him.
They introduce themselves but instead of inviting him to the league they pop by every once in a while to ‘subtly’ teach him about responsibility and power, but also about love and humanity. They try to teach him to enjoy life and that he doesn’t have to act like an adult around them, instead encouraging him to enjoy his childhood even if it’s not an ordinary one.
(Too bad the Justice League suck at subtlety.)
Billy is certain they somehow found out he’s a kid before they even met him, probably because of Batman’s freaky know-it-all powers, but he isn’t very worried as they seem nice and don’t treat him like he’s dumb or fragile. They respect him as a hero despite his age so he lets himself act like a kid around them after a while.
When he gets comfortable enough to detransform Billy thinks that’s his identity reveal. The league thinks that he magicked himself a body that’s more of a representation of his true self and fits his developmental age better, possibly as a way to blend in with humans and experience what it’s like to be a normal child. Good for him!
Basically Billy gets a bunch of super powered parents and the Justice League get a newborn man that they think they’re raising from scratch lol
#billy batson#shazam#dc#dc captain marvel#justice league#fanfiction#fanfic#dcu#Diana’s idea of subtly teaching responsibility is to attack him before ever introducing herself#Billy’s happily helping a cat out of a tree then sees a sword rapidly approaching his face held by a terrifying woman#it ends with them both getting ice cream and discussing his tactics#Clark was one of the very few reasonable ones and just gave advice#hes not very subtle though#I mean have you seen him? he’s the most recognizable figure on earth#he’s often spotted on rooftops sharing homemade sandwhiches with Marvel as a way to encourage him to take breaks and be social#Surprisingly the most famous group of people in America who do flips in colourful spandex all day aren’t exactly masters of subtlety#Bruce tried to do an irl trolley problem to see how he would handle it#it was rigged so no one would get hurt and all the victims were well paid actors of course#but Billy didn’t know that#he stopped the trolley with his bare hands#he didn’t even consider any other option#he did not go to school so he's never heard of the problem and didn't even realize there WAS another option#Bruce nodded approvingly but was honsetly kind of disappointed#he wanted to know how a toddler with above average morals would solve it the intended way#maybe he’ll try it on Jon next#My writing

I'm at the brink of a suicidal breakdown. I've been waiting to get my paycheck from an illustration job I've done last October 2023, I did ask them about it and said that I would get paid on the 27th. It's the 28th and I still don't see any updates on my end. I've gotten my hopes up for so long, every month since and I've burnt the fuck out from waiting.
I've been refraining myself from eating and buy myself stuff like food and toiletries and I've completely ran out of money to survive. I wish i could accept commissions but I haven't been doing great mental and physical wise and I don't have the means to draw other than a few sketches to cheer myself up. I'm completely burnt out.
If you could help spread this around I would appreciate it, every bit helps at least to cover my necessities for a while until I hope to eventually get paid
I'm sorry for asking for donations so frequently I just can't hold on for much longer in this state
Donations and reblogs are appreciated, thank you
#personal#i hate asking for help but the other option rn for my depressed ass is to kill myself and no one wants that#i just dont understand why its taking so long. i already was told ill be paid at the 22nd but then after waiting through the whole weekend#they tell me its supposed to be on the 27th. it was a typo#now its the 28th and i dont even see it#am i really gonna get paid. this is souring my experience working here. i do have a project to work on but all i can think of is dying#my sister helped me out a bit but she cant even do much bc she got out of surgery a few weeks ago and doesnt earn much#she also has rent and gas to cover for her new job#mads if youre reading this thank you for helping me at that low point when she got into the hospital. i owe you so much already#i feel indebted

IF it can be helped at all, stay home when you are sick to prevent your illness from spreading to others, even if it's not a "serious" illness and is just a common cold, a common cold can still be really detrimental anyone with a weakened or compromised immune system from conditions including, but not limited to, leukemia, HIV, and hepatitis. And you can never know if one of your co-workers or a customer or a random stranger at the store has or lives with someone who has one of these conditions.
Not everyone can help it, some people risk losing their job if they call in sick, and not everyone has someone they can call on to run to the store for essentials while they're sick.
In these cases at least consider wearing a mask while you're in public so as to prevent spreading your sickness to co-workers / customers / random strangers you encounter while out in public. There are several cultures where even pre-COVID times it was considered rude to go out in public without a mask even if you had a simple cold because of it being inconsiderate to spread your sickness to others.
Now, if it can be helped at all, if you have a job where you can call in sick without losing your income, or if you have a job where you can work form home, or if you have anyone at all you can call on to run to the store for you to grab essentials, use that!
"Oh but I don't want to inconvenience my co-workers by having them down a person today, what if they really need my help?" You know what's going to inconvenience them more is when you make everyone at work sick, and some of them might either have a compromised immune system or live with someone who does.
"Oh but I don't want to inconvenience my friend by asking them to grab some essentials from the store for me while I'm sick!" You know what's going to be more inconvenient is when you spread your sickness to that dad you stood in line behind at the store who has a child at home withe leukemia, or a spouse with HIV.
And again, of course not everyone has an option. Some people risk losing their income if they call into work sick, or they don't have anyone who they can call on to get essentials from the store for them. But again, at least consider masking up to mitigate the risk of spreading your illness to vulnerable people who could be seriously harmed by even a common cold or mild flu.
#This post brought to you by:#I work a unionized job with the protected right to paid sick days#and also the option to work from home#DESPITE THIS#I still regularly have co-workers coming in with serious illnesses like strep throat#or coming in when they actively have a fever and know it#In this case there's no excuse you could have used a sick day and/or worked from home why are you here spreading this to me#and they'll talk about how they went out shopping even when they knew they were sick and did have someone who could have done it for them#At this point when you have a choice you are just being rude#manners#good manners#politeness#courtesy#etiquette#so anyway if you encounter people who are anti-union and anti workers rights#and think that if people are given the right to paid sick days they'll just abuse it#know that my experience has been the total opposite and people STILL won't stop coming into work when they're sick

If you want to read comics and you want to test the waters:-
Yes, RCO and clones exist, everyone uses them, I do it weekly too for titles I cannot access any other way (The Warlord) but let me tell you, it’s not the only option, particularly if you want to read reasonably modern comics back issues rather than deliberately suppressed obscure stuff. Plus, don’t you want to look at comics without worrying about getting viruses?
Your Local Library: your library probably has comics as trade paperbacks, and inter library loan will have more. It’s not the most consistent way to find things, but you should definitely look them up, there’s probably something there you’d be interested in reading. Good for having multiple presses, and most take suggestions for their collections, which is a slow but free way to read titles with highly detailed art like Wonder Woman Historia in person.
Digital libraries: my local libraries have ComicsPlus subscriptions, which I can use for free. Now you won’t get DC or Marvel on them, but BOOM!, Dark Horse, Image, Oni Press, Papercutz? All options. A really helpful way to easily sample other presses.
Internet Archive Library: the IA is again going to have an eclectic collection and be difficult to search, but it’s there and it has a lot of stuff and you’re not going to be worrying about computer viruses.
DCUI: if you’re in US, UK, Canada, AU or NZ, you can get a DCUI account. There’s a free trial available of course, and if what you’re interested in trying was published more than 6 months ago, you don’t even need to shell out for Ultra. It costs me less than a Netflix subscription per month, even for Ultra. There’s also a small handful of comics you’ll be able to access for free without ANY subscription - essentially advertising for new runs etc.
MU: just like DCUI, only Marvel, and available more places. Also runs on a subscription model. MU also has the quirk that you can manage digital ownership of individual issues also through their app (if you buy Marvel floppies there is a mechanism to obtain a legal digital copy within ~6 months of the publication date)
Local Comics Shops: you can also…buy floppies and trade paperbacks for yourself. If you really love a story and it’s out in trade, I highly recommend buying it for yourself to have forever. It just sidesteps so many future problems. An LCS is also more likely to have a back catalogue of titles available - if you’re looking for a trade published 8 years ago, they might have it while an ordinary bookshop won’t. If you’re less certain, events like Free Comic Book Day and Batman Day are largely a marketing exercise more than new original material these days, but they’re also a good way to get to handle and own actual comic books if you’ve never done that before.
Other bookshops: if you don’t have a local bookshop with a specialist comics and manga collection (I do) it’s going to be a bit like trying to find comics at your local library: you’ll see lots of stuff with Batman and Joker in the title, and a random selection of anything else. Sometimes you can get surprisingly good deals from them as collectors are less likely to use them to get titles.
Overstock/Remainder Sellers: always worth a look, particularly if you’re trying to pick up titles printed several years ago. My local one has found some absolute gems for me, at a significant discount (I have picked up parts of Dixon’s Nightwing run, Bennett’s Batwoman run, Rowell’s Runaways, some Wonder Woman trades from Rucka and Perez, Gotham Central, I just managed to get the second n52 Blue Beetle trade…)
EBay/second hand shops/Abebooks/Biblio: a decent way to measure what the actual value of a comic title is on the second hand market. Sometimes you can find that the market value is far lower than you expected (Cassie’s Wonder Girl series is remarkably affordable). In other occasions you realise DC is leaving a LOT of money on the table by not reprinting (look up Red Robin trade prices and weep).
Friends: do you know anyone else who likes comics? They may already own stuff they can loan to you! (Once I lent out my Birds of Prey collection to a friend and he returned it with the first two n52 titles added. Still unsure if that was meant to be a kindness or just letting me store them)
#yes yo ho ho is an option#but there’s also multiple free legal methods#and paid legal options#and sometimes I feel people act like managing to get comics anywhere other than RCO is wildly difficult#it’s not! and depending on what you’re looking for it can be very affordable

irt poverty/homelessness + alcohol use (esp with @butchfeygela‘s tags on my post)- people really underestimate the function that substance use/alcohol use can have for someone who is unhoused. being unhoused is boring, cold, painful, + lonely. substances can allow the 8 hours panhandling to get the $45 you need for a motel to fly by. alcohol reduces your perception of the cold + can knock you out whben you can’t sleep. substances can help you cope with the physical deterioration from malnutrition, constant stress, + sleeping outside. substances can provide social connection with others who you would otherwise not enjoy or help you cope with being alone.
not only that but- many unhoused people are stuck in a seemingly inescapable position. the pathway to financial stability or even housing is difficult or even impossible. in the wake of that hopelessness, the downsides of substance use start to seem insignificant. arrest? you’re getting arrested anyway for sleeping outside, peeing outside, standing in the wrong place, etc. physical danger? you’re already beat the fuck up, anyway, right? loss of relationships? you’ve lost most people already. inability to keep a job? nobody will hire you + you can’t stay employed, anyway, because you have no car + no shower.
perhaps for you or me, the cons of heroin use or binge drinking nightly greatly outweigh the pros. that isn’t the case for everyone. if we are really serious about ending overdose/addiction, we need to start looking at giving people lives worth recovering into instead of shaming them for their own hopelessness.
#i had a long talk with my dad once about how#my brother sank into so much financial despair#that he was never going to be able to find#a livable job or housing (eviction record#plus bad credit plus#arrest record ofc#he was going to be forced into poverty for the rest of his life#the only job prospects he had were menial shit jobs#he once worked at one of those chicken butchering places#it was the only place that paid him a living wage but he got fired for relapsing#his only options were to go to school part time + try to pass with his dyslexia which made him essentially unable to read#then work a horrible shitty job the rest of the time#while paying atlanta's outrageous rent prices#plus who is he gonna room with?? all his friends are opioid users!#while he paid back all the debt he accrued from going to rehab#then MAYBE after like 6 years of school he could get a decent job#but his credit would be in flames for years his eviction record there for years#his arrest record + lack of driver's license limiting his employment..#sorry but i would have probably given up at that point too#not to mention his interpersonal + familial relationships up in flames + the shame#of the things he did while using hanging over his head#the only family member who didn't think he was an irredeemable fuckup (me) living a thousand miles away + about as broke as him#substance use#harm reduction

I've seen people say this is proof that EA is at fault for all of this nonsense surrounding Veilguard, and honestly, I'm willing to believe it is, because EA sucks ass and I hate them, and I believe BioWare can very much produce better writing when freed from corporate meddling*.
But I also don't think this should be used to protect the writing from criticism? Cuz like ... so you agree? You agree the writing was bad, in this product you sold people, for money? And you're shifting the blame onto the publisher? You agree it's bad writing that has your name on it but it's none of your faults specifically?
Even if I believe that, it's still ... You agree, right? You agree that the stuff people are saying is bad is bad? But you're saying it sucks so bad that they complain about it because it's not your fault?
Do y'all understand my dilemma here? Obviously don't harrass the writers personally or send them death threats, but that's just basic human decency to me. If you as the writer realize that something with your name on it is bad through no fault of your own, surely the solution isn't to complain that people are pointing out the bad thing you're aware of is bad? Surely you should go "Yeah that was bad. I agree with you all. I wanted to fix it but couldn't."
And you might say "well they're probably under NDAs so they can't say anything negative" but they ARE?? This right here is them implying the bad shit isn't their fault but the result of them "losing that fight" (with the execs)?
Do you get it? They agree that it's bad, but also saying it's not their fault it's bad, so stop complaining because it's very difficult for them. Broskis people paid for the game. And they are critiquing the shit you agree is bad. No need to get all wounded animal on the audience.
*Though I should note that indie devs still have a profit incentive, particularly the bigger ones, so even if we lived in a world without EA but with capitalism it's very likely BioWare itself would try to be more and more commercial with each new game, EA just sped up the process exponentially. El problema es el capitalismo etc.
#this is just kind of unprofesh to me but what do i know#also i am not defending EA here they can burn in hell#i 100% believe the HR department vibes in the game could be the fault of corporate meddling#but my question is like. what does this particular line of complaint accomplish#do you guys want to shield yourselves from criticism you already said you agree with?#you could shift the blame properly onto EA instead of asking the audience who paid money for a product with your name on it to stop#talking about it?#and i mean shift the blame in a subtle way#like when replying on knock-off twitter to a critique you 'agree with' by saying 'oh yeah i agree. wish we could've done something else'#'but it wasn't an option'#like if you can openly admit you fought against some things ... you can admit that in a way that doesn't paint you as#the victim of the audience critiques rather than EA itself#bioware critical

I'm curious because it seems like The Book of Bill made his character sympathetic to a lot more people. Let's see if my theory is right!
#gravity falls#ford pines#the book of bill#poll#i'm happy to read any nuance shared in the replies and tags#im also wondering how many people find him more attractive than they did before but thats a poll for another time#it was on sight for me. i absorbed him into my brain and never let him go from the moment he showed up on screen#if only i could be paid to become a fordologist#edit: wish i had space to add the options for 'i already liked him and now i like him more' 'i disliked him and now i dislike him more' etc#but i simply cant put in that many options

going further. franks child self was living in that one room with a strange weirdo boy he dreamed up but never really had. now his inner child isn’t alone anymore. he plays games with his real charlie in their terrible one room apartment. getting weird with it and being okay with being weird no matter what everyone on the outside might think. sharing a bed together to feel the comfort in being close to that
macs child self had charlie the whole time. inseparable. a package deal. the most genuine connection and comfort in both of their neglected tiny lives. not just because they were otherwise alone. decades later theyre not going anywhere. now their inner child rides bikes together they throw rocks at trains together they teach each other about the world just like they needed so desperately in old times
dennis’ child self never had charlie. not until highschool. but that was exactly when he experienced his csa. his inner child found charlie at the exact right moment. caught him when he fell. he got his child self back through charlie just as he lost feeling. and now what do the two of them do together? they go recreate memories and recapture lost youth with a mutual unspoken understanding of why
they all need charlie. relaxing into his genuine youthful energy lets them feel that way again.
#iasip#charlie kelly#:) the first one is the ‘playing together in this room all day’ from the last post i wanted to make it clearer#i wrote a part about dee but i decided its better to reblog with comment instead of one post#because this feels so good to me. so nice to think about him being uplifting. but not possible to ignore the darker aspects of his childhood#give you options#delicate.#im trying to be cautious#but you cant talk about the gang without dee and you cant talk about child selves without trauma. its not Honest not Authentic not Genuine#it does feel sad its kinda tough to touch on it. delicate yk yk#but she seeks charlies natural lack of ambition and a brother who doesnt push her to prop himself up#dees brother fought her and charlies sisters fought him. both cases about superiority. dee fights back charlie ignores#csa warning#kid selves#frank reynolds#bc theres no attention paid to him

ive been watching a lot of Cities: Skylines 2 playthroughs lately and i saw one guy do this to "incentivize the poor people to get richer" and then like 2 episodes later undid it. and he was like "this must be a bug" because the poverty levels in his city didn't really change?? Excuse me???
#mogimage#mogtext#actually come to think of it i don't think ive seen people subsidize low wealth cims. like at all. even though that's an option#because you know if you're wondering why everyone's complaining about taxes maybe your impoverished guys shouldn't be at 17% tax rate#“but what if they don't get out of poverty because they're being paid to be poor” you are falling for the TRAP#anyway another thing that's amusing in all of these playthroughs is that these guys build police stations instead of addressing#the structural reasons that incentivize crime#like idk maybe that 25% unemployment rate has something to do with that crime#and it's funny because the police departments don't really affect the probability of the crime succeeding#rather only the probability of doing crime#sooooo take that as you will
