“Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’ve already read that part.” She winced as Varric approached, resisting the urge to slam the book shut and try to hide it. Useless.

“That is true,” she admitted simply. He snorted, then sat down on the bench beside her.

“You’re actually rereading it? Seriously?” Under the apparent shock she swore he sounded a bit flustered, glancing over at him. His eyes were wide.

“It seems so,” was all she said, beginning to feel a little more playful than defensive. 

“Seeker, it’s really not that good of a story.” He sounded almost beseeching—a bit dramatic, even for him.

“You underestimate yourself.” She turned the page, although she hadn’t really been reading since he approached. “As usual.”

“Excuse me, I think I need you to say that again.”

“You have so many layers, Varric, I could write a book about them.” She gave up the pretense, closing the book and setting it on her lap. “A false humility to cover your ego, except the ego itself is false. It’s all false. Layers upon layers.” He blinked, looking genuinely surprised. She pressed her advantage. “You are a capable fighter, a good strategist, and a skilled writer. Even when you think you aren’t.” She tapped her finger against the book on her lap, driving home her point. “Your skill with wordplay is remarkable, but it is not surprising—you couch yourself with half-truths and deflections as a matter of course. It’s all parabole and hyperbole. Nothing straightforward.”

“I— um—” She smirked, watching him flounder for the first time. He cleared his throat and glanced away, fingers curling into the edge of the bench.

“I think the most sincerity I’ve ever seen from you was… during our fight.” Her voice dropped as she recalled that time, her anger. It had deepened the wedge she had already driven between them before, when she had Varric brought in for questioning.

“You were scary, Seeker,” he muttered and she winced again, nodding.

“And you were angry.” Now he nodded. “And hurt.” He hesitated now, then sighed and nodded again. She was only watching him out of the corner of her eye, trying to not intrude.

“We both were, I guess,” he pointed out somberly. 

She stared down at the book in her lap. This was her fault—she had brought this up. She had twisted this moment. “Varric,” she began quietly, feeling his attention shift back to her. She steeled herself, wondering why this was harder than facing down a dragon, and turned to meet his eyes. “I should… That is, I have been meaning—”

“It’s okay,” he began but she shook her head.

“It is not. I am sorry, Varric.” They stared at each other in silence for long moments. He looked away first, laughing a little.

“Shit. Never expected to hear that from you.”

“Nor I,” she admitted a little sourly, smiling when it made him laugh again. “There is much that I regret. I should have apologized long ago—I should have thanked you when you stayed to help. That was brave. I should have—”

“Seeker,” he interrupted, turning to face her properly, drawing a leg underneath himself. “Cassandra,” he said, her name startling on his lips. “That’s enough. Perhaps this would be a good time to stop talking.” She turned to face him with a frown, wondering if she had upset him, but he looked…

She did not know how he looked.

Not upset, certainly.

But she did not press, and eventually he smiled at her and resumed his position—but she noticed he had closed some of the distance between them, his shoulder brushing her arm. She did not move away. And eventually she opened the book again, feeling his attention lingering on her even as she lost herself in his words and world once more.

Summer Afternoons

Fem!Reader Words: 636

AN: I found an old WIP that I managed to finish. I'm also playing around with fic format styles so let me know if there's anything you think looks good with formatting. I'm curious.

Thoma sat outside on the stairs of the Kamisato estate facing the garden. He had a small basket filled with yarn next to him with knitting needles in hand. It may have been summer, but it was a surprisingly cool day. The afternoon sun was shining on his skin providing warmth that made the summer day perfect to be outside to him.

He had been working with the yarn for at least a half-hour giving him a good start on his project. He had been enjoying the sounds of birds that had been flying by during his break. The estate had been cleaned to perfection leaving nothing for him to do.

He listened to the footsteps of the guards walking back and forth creating almost a melody. A pair of footsteps walking against the wood of the stairs interrupted the melody as they approached him. It was stopped by the sound of a person sitting down on the stairs next to him opposite his basket.

“Hi.” A voice greeted him.

Thoma looked up from his project and saw Y/N next to him. She carried a tray with glasses of lemonade topped with plenty of ice and two plates of cut-up lavender melons. “I've seemed to make way too much. Want some? I've already put off as much as I could onto both Kamisatos.”

“I was thinking about grabbing some after I got far enough with this.” He held up the project he had been working on.

Y/N sat on the stairs next to him placing the tray between them. “What's it going to be?”

“I got a package from my mom and she saw some yarns that she thought I would like. I'm just making a blanket for myself. Figured it would be the closest I would get to having a hug from her.” He explained.

“I'm glad you're making something for yourself for once. You would benefit from being a bit more selfish every now and then.”

He laughed. “My mother had sent a letter with the package and she said if I made something to give away with this yarn she would find a way to tell me something similar.” Even though he knew his mom wasn't serious, it was tempting to do. As much as he loved Inazuma, Mondstadt was his childhood hood. It's where his mother lived and he missed her dearly.

“Well, next time you send her a letter you can tell her that someone here is also trying to make sure you're a little selfish every now and then.” Y/N smiled. “We can even get a picture of you wrapped in the blanket to send to her.”

“That would be nice.” It was an offer he was willing to take up. His mom had very much been one to ask for pictures of him since she couldn't see her ‘baby boy’.

She moved the drink and plate of fruit off of the tray for him before grabbing the tray. “I'm excited to see how the blanket comes out. As nice as it is out here, I do have a book that's inside calling my name.”

“Oh, what's it about?”

“It's something Ayaka has been begging me to read.” The step creaked as she stood up with the tray.

“I think I know which one you're talking about. It's good. I think you'll like it.” The metal of the knitting needles began clicking as he started working with the yarn as the two of them talked.

“I've gotten about a hundred pages in and I'm beginning to question why I put it off for so long.”

Thoma laughed. “Don't let me keep you from it any longer then.”

“It's no harm. Maybe one of these days I'll come and sit out here with you as I read.”

“I would like that.”

John was pretty smart about how he got all those new cards into his sylladex. And now that he has twelve cards, does he even need a ‘detect collisions’? I’m sure he’ll be absolutely fine and there will be absolutely no throwing things off a cliff from here on out. Right????

Two huge things happen in these pages: we get a peek into Harry Anderson: Wise Guy by Mike Caveney, and John creates the pogo hammer, unlocking uncountable new possibilities with alchemy. They’re both super important, but my Wise Guy analysis will be a separate post because I found some weird and cool trivia, so here I’m just discussing the alchemy.

Alchemy is, historically, right at the intersection of science and magic. In that way it’s very cool that John has his breakthrough while reading about magic tricks, considering that up til now the process of punching cards has focused on the mathematics and data storage of it all. Stage magic, however, doesn’t create ‘real’ effects, only its impact on people is real. Alchemy seems entirely real – there’s no trickery, and John sure is holding that hammer. Taking the unreal (video games, the effects of manipulating the mouse and keyboard) and making them real continues to be Sburb’s whole deal, and right now I think Skaia’s power can be best phrased as ‘turning stories into reality’ – encompassing both meanings of creation/creativity at once.

Above are the totems for the hammer and pogo ride individually (p.618 – see bottom right of picture) and for the pogo hammer (p.632). They do all look similar, with a thicker part at the top and another thick section jutting out in the lower half. It’s not identical – the pogo hammer has some crisper edges compared to the smooth curves of the pogo ride – but the pogo hammer totem looks more similar to the pogo alone than to the hammer alone. This suggests that – from an alchemy mechanics perspective - the pogo is the base item, and the hammer is the combinatory or modifying item. It further suggests the idea of a ‘hammer pogo,’ which I imagine as a giant, rideable hammerhead mounted on a spring instead of a handle, one that John could ride to victory just like on p.496, but where his steed itself can bash the imps and John only has to worry about guiding it around. This might be slightly less dangerous than using the pogo itself, as he’d at least be able to hold on, and it would deal more damage. It could be created by punching the hole patterns for both items into a single card, creating more holes instead of less.

The pogo hammer is significantly more expensive than the pogo ride and hammer as individual items. The pogo ride alone costs 5 grist and 1 shale, the hammer alone costs 2 grist, and the pogo hammer is all the way up at 10 grist and 16 shale – the most expensive item we’ve seen so far. The rocket pack with its multiple insertions was technically a more complex item, but was cheaper on grist, maybe because it’s absolutely useless. It makes sense that the grist cost wouldn’t just refer to the components, but to how useful the output will be in the game, so that players can’t get access to gamebreakingly powerful items too early on. I would guess that the rocket pack on its own would be more expensive than the merged item, possibly requiring a grist type that John and Rose don’t have yet.

John is truly acting on whims here. Not long ago he was furious about the imps using his pogo ride, swearing that no-one but him risks injury on the pogo ride (p.476) – but now he barely notices an imp bouncing on the balcony, getting the new one all messy with oil too. He’s got something new to feel overly passionate about, and it is HIS FIRST CUSTOM WEAPON. And not a moment too soon, given that the giant imp has presumably climbed up into John’s yard by now. Lots of combat-based games make it necessary to either upgrade your weapon with additional damage and special moves, or obtain new and more powerful weapons, in order to fight tougher enemies. Players are often able to choose what properties they’d like to imbue their weapons with, or will collect multiple and decide which one to use. In this case, John’s chosen the Bounce property, which allows for the weapon’s attack to ‘jump’ to a second target on a successful hit, stacking an unlimited number of times so long as the attacks continue to land. The imp on p.636 looks understandably scared about this.

The alchemiter, we’ve seen, can be used by either Rose, John, or the imps – I assume they’re the ones who made a whole bunch of regular hammers. John should definitely take the pogo hammer totem and stash it away somewhere, both so that he’s the only one who can use the upgraded weapon, and so that the imps don’t waste all his hard earned grist making a hundred pogo hammers. The imps are mischievous creatures due to the harlequin prototyping, but I’d actually guess this tendency is programmed into the base NPC, pre-prototyping. As well as directly attacking the players, enemies trying to deplete grist resources so that players can’t progress further in the game fits with Sburb’s punishing learning curve, and gives players another task to balance – protecting their carved totems and their alchemiter.

The cosmetic upgrade to the weapon is important too. Instead of a plain, uncolored hammer, the pogo hammer has a green rubber grip and a miniature green Slimer on top of the head, perfectly matching the one on John’s shirt. I know that I will choose a weapon that looks sick as hell over one that does a little more damage but has a boring design, because you gotta have an aesthetic when playing a video game and you gotta stick to it even more strictly than you stick to a mechanical build. John’s whole aesthetic being based around green slime (and perhaps magic, thinking back to his CLEVER DISGUISE) means this weapon is for him and him alone, and with that in mind, it’s poetic that he made it all by himself.

John is really, really excited about his creation, as he should be. He DID ‘make something totally sweet’ as he says to Rose, and I’m really happy to see him proud of himself for this. Rose is really good at this game, and it can be hard to play games with a friend who is a lot better than you, so it feels really good as a reader and a big John fan to see him get this moment of success.

Updated QSMP AO3 Work Language Stats-- as of December 3rd, 2023

June 6 2023 stats, July 9 2023 stats, August 13 2023 stats

Back again with more language stats, after a long break! The stats were staying very similar, and I got busy, so I decided to set them aside for a bit and then see what they looked like. Because I didn't do monthly updates, discussions of the changes will be slightly different, as I'm not a statistician nor particularly talented at math. Focus will stay on the larger numbers and the comparison between QSMP specifically and AO3 at large.

Fun tidbits/disclaimers to start:

QSMP has 6211 works as of today!! That's 3175 more works since August 13, doubling the number of works in just under four months.

AO3 has 12,140,000 total works as of today (you can view this number on the home page when logged out); this is nearly a million more works since June when I first started doing these stats.

Filipino and Vietnamese works have been written since my last update!

I've mentioned my methodology on previous stats posts, but just as a reminder, I gather this data manually by filtering by language within the QSMP tag. On occasion I miss a new language, but on the whole the significant numbers should be accurate.

The numbers:

English has 5169 works and 83.22% of total works in QSMP.

Spanish has 636 works and 10.24% of total works.

Brazilian Portuguese has 360 works and 5.8% of total works.

French has 29 works and 0.47% of total works.

European Portuguese has 5 works and 0.08% of total works.

Mandarin has 3 works and 0.05% of total works.

Russian has 5 works and 0.08% of total works.

The last four languages, Esperanto, Malaysian Malay, Filipino, and Vietnamese, all have 1 work and 0.02% of total works respectively, maintaining their numbers from last month as well.

Observations:

English still heavily dominates the work count on AO3 for QSMP, and Spanish has gone down 7.49% since June, which feels pretty significant. My guess would be the lack of active Spanish speakers contributes heavily to this, but it's also a matter of percentages interacting-- like I've stressed before, other percentages will go down when one or more others go up. In this case, Brazilian Portuguese works have gone up 3.92%, which could be cutting into the Spanish percentage, although considering English has also gone up I would venture a guess that Spanish speakers are writing less fic than they were in June.

The increase in Portuguese works is impressive, especially considering that from my knowledge Brazilians don't use AO3 very much (see below numbers). I would guess this is partially because AO3 is becoming more popular as multicultural fandom communities (QSMP in particular, since I'm not sure how common this level of multilingual fandom is elsewhere) interact and people move to AO3 rather than just Wattpad or Twitter. AO3 Numbers Across the Site:

To repeat, AO3 has 12,140,000 total works across the site as of today.

English has 10,797,442 works and 88.94% of total works across AO3.

Spanish has 146,087 works and 1.2% of total works.

Brazilian Portuguese has 34,078 works and 0.28% of total works.

French has 58,383 works and 0.48% of total works.

European Portuguese has 1,149 works and 0.01% of total works.

Mandarin has 709,088 works and 5.84% of total works.

Russian has 255,610 works and 2.11% of total works.

Esperanto and Malaysian Malay have 109 and 126 works respectively and both have statistically insignificant percentages of the total works.

Filipino has 9517 works and 0.08% of total works.

Vietnamese has 7769 works and 0.06% of total works.

All these numbers come from AO3's Languages page.

Observations:

Not a ton of significant difference since June, although English's percentage of total works has decreased somewhat and Mandarin's has continued to go up. I do think it's good to note that Mandarin and Russian, two of the largest language groups on AO3, are two of the more populated languages not spoken on the server within QSMP's numbers as well. It's also interesting to note here how low Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese's numbers are-- like I said, AO3 is not popular amongst these language groups, though I'm curious to see if it becomes more popular as time goes on and more multilingual communities continue to come together and interact in fannish ways.

Final disclaimers below the cut:

I did not include numbers for German even though it's spoken by a server member (& two admins as well) because it doesn't have any works in QSMP. I think if we get a full group of speakers for it, then the numbers will come. For fun, though, here are the AO3 numbers: 24,863 works.

Fics were posted as I was working on these numbers, so some might be just a touch off and even in the time it takes me to finish the post, even more fics will get posted. If I genuinely missed a language, please feel free to tell me, but otherwise any differences will be a matter of a couple of works and will not be statistically significant.

Fics often get deleted from the archive for a myriad of reasons-- there was a while where many Mandarin fics were being deleted, sometimes people leave the fandom and delete their works (this is especially common in MCYT fandom), etc. etc. This means numbers don't always go up; case in point, the one Latin fic was deleted and is no longer reflected in the numbers (note: this fic was tagged incorrectly anyway and was written in Spanish).

Languages are manually tagged by users; they are not double checked by the archive nor by me (I am not looking through six thousand fics to check if the language tagged is actually accurate. I did it with the Latin one because it was obviously wrong and there was only one work). Sometimes people tag the wrong language for various reasons, I can't do anything about this and on the whole most works are tagged correctly.

People sometimes tag for the wrong fandom, either on purpose or by accident, or works are wrangled into QSMP even though they don't necessarily involve the server. Wranglers make decisions based off usage, but if you genuinely feel there is some error in how something is wrangled, you can make a polite request for it to be fixed with Support and Feedback.

I am a volunteer tag wrangler for AO3; this does not give me any extra data-gathering capabilities nor do I agree with all actions/statements the org makes. I am disclosing this, and always disclose this, to make sure people are aware of any bias I may have. This is not free reign to harass me or any other wranglers who disclose their volunteer work.

If I did any math wrong, please politely let me know and I will fix the data. Again, I am not a statistician nor particularly talented at math, I'm just a nerd about languages and I enjoy looking at stats.

I picked up the funny Kuhn book on your rec, and noticed Karl Popper on the same shelf, framing himself in contrast. Do you have/know of any good critiques on Popper in general, or his indeterminism in particular? I'm guessing he didn't convince every Marxist and someone's bound to have responded by now.

yea popper sucks. i mean kuhn himself was responding to / critiquing popper; they very famously had a long ongoing dispute. but like i said before, kuhn is also not where it's at imo. like, not that academic citations are the be-all end-all of intellectual value, but there are reasons you don't typically see either of these guys cited by people working in history / philosophy of science these days lol.

anyway in regards to the marxism angle of this i will say: a major problem with hist/philsci is that these disciplines are pretty ensconced in universities (conservative institutionally & intellectually) and have also taken a long time to even start looking beyond the horizons of great man history, the 'western canon', &c. so the lack of marxists / communists in these fields is like, even more pronounced than in academic history more broadly. like it's insane that people like bob young and roger cooter and adrian desmond are still, like, standouts in this respect lol. so, although there are many many marxists who have responded to popper on those terms, and many many historians and philosophers of science who have responded on that side, the sliver of overlap here is a lot smaller than it should be.

i would definitely read with a critical eye and be on the lookout for places where these texts fail specifically because their authors are not engaging in materialist or properly historicised analysis, or are just blatantly reactionary themselves, in different ways to popper. but, a few places to start with political histsci and philsci critiques of him, or just useful accounts of his legacy and critics:

The Cambridge Companion to Popper (2016). Jeremy Shearmur and Geoffrey Stokes (eds.). <-usual disclaimer that cambridge edited vols. are methodologically, politically, and epistemologically playing it VERY safe. you often want to read them 'backwards', ie, read for what's not being said as much as for what's actually in there. consider this a document that shows what sorts of debates are being permitted, centred, and accepted as 'mainstream' and 'reasonable'.

Returning to the present - seems like Xi got an epiphany of some sort? Well, I guess the whole trip was less about repairing the rings and more about Xi finding a way to bring Jinghua back. If he did get a new idea and doesn't need the rings for it, guess that's all good.
