I agree that the lack of proper resolution/actual discussion between them is frustrating, and you pointed it out well.
I think the "doylist" answer (ie, the technical reason) is that Lupin and Goemon's conflict was a B-plot, that needed to be closed quickly before the actual season finale. TMS tied the loose ends really fast in a way that ends up not being satisfying.
As for a "watsonian" answer (ie, part of the plot/of Lupin III's universe), I don't have a clear one, but I have a lead:
While the catalyst of their fight was Goemon thinking Lupin might see him as an underling or a piece of his collection, the actual fight wasn't between Goemon and Lupin. It was between Goemon and himself.
The second Goemon attacked Lupin, he stopped seeing Lupin, but instead saw a ghost of himself - whom, as you might notice, is wearing his Part 1 colors and generally looks more like his Part 1 self (face shape, hair, etc).
The real issue Goemon has is not with Lupin, but with a part of him that he's never made peace with; a part of him that saw Lupin as an enemy because he had been manipulated to do so; a part of him that was treated and used like a weapon, or you might even say like a part of Momochi's collection (or arsenal in this case). Part 1!Goemon didn't know anything other than violence and so resorted to it as a way to cope with any doubt or emotion he didn't know how to handle. And that's a reflex he's never really been able to shed.
I think in P5 Goemon hid the real source of his issues behind the excuse of "I have beef with Lupin, let's throw hands". That's something he does regularly, and most notably in "The coming of Goemon Ishikawa XIII" and "A wolf calls another" (in Part 1): after it had been revealed that Momochi had been manipulating and using Goemon, and after Momochi was killed, Goemon still tried to kill Lupin for no apparent reason other than he'd said he would. His real problems all came from Momochi, but he deflected onto Lupin. You could say a similar thing happened in "Kooki Kabuki" (Part 2), where Goemon attacked Lupin at the demand of the Kabuki gang, and at the last second stayed his hand because he actually did not want to hurt Lupin and realised that would solve none of his problems (and later regretted his actions to the point of trying to commit seppuku. Goemon's got ISSUES, man.)
Therefore, a possible interpretation to the lack of resolution between Lupin and Goemon in Part 5, is that Goemon resolved this conflict against himself during this fight; and when he came back to his senses and realized he'd hurt Lupin, the only thing left for him to do was try to save his friend, and apologize - not ask Lupin for clarification on their relationship (which was now clear, they're friends AND allies), or for an apology for not treating him right (which Lupin never did in P5, as far as I can remember).
Anyway, that's just a possibility, and I still think that Lupin must have had something to do with Goemon's issues, and there should have been a proper discussion between them. But at least this might explain some of it.
Sorry for a long post and my grammar, but this is something that i really need to get of my chest
After almost a year of thinking about it, i've come to a simple conclusion - despite my love for part 5, i do not like how Lupin's and Goemon's conflict ended.. Or at the very least im very confused by it. And here is why
Before i go into details about this, i want to clarify a few things
1. All of this is, obviously, my personal opinion. If you disagree - thats great!! I would honestly love to hear your opinion!!
2. I love part 5 and this conflict in it self. The moment when Goemon, after releasing what he had done, rushes back to Lupin, throwing Zantezuken away, and desperately calls to him is beautifully heartbreaking! And the scene where Lupin encourages him to laugh after everything that happened is just beautiful!
However.. This same scene is basically the only conclusion that we ever get to this conflict. And this is just not enough. You may argue that this is the point - they've been through hell and back together, of course that would be enough for them! And i agree. I agree that the intention behind writing this scene the way it was written, was to show us that Lupin and Goemon are so close that they don't need lengthy discussions to understand each other and to forgive each other. But! If that the truth.. why was there a conflict to begin with?
The problem with this ending is the fact that it addresses only that Goe attacked Lupin but not the cause of it, making it seem like the only reason for this was... "Enzo told him to!"
Wich is not the case
The reason for why i think that way is simple - even befor Enzo starts trying to manipulate him, Goemon declares, that he and Lupin are neither allies nor friends, wich outright suggest that his actions and insecuritys about beeing seen as Lupins underling or part of Lupins collection, are symptoms of a bigger issue.
Because up until this point.. there wasn't really much to suggest they aren't, not only in other season but in this one. Up untill this point Goemon trust Lupin with his plans, helps him whenever he can and just is in general.. acts like his freind, even if a little more silent then Jigen. One of the best examples is the scene where Albert injured Lupin and seeing this, even so Goemon clearly looks at him with rage and desire for revenge, he prioritizes saving his freind. Because Lupin is important to him.
And even better we can see the depths of his attachment to Lupin after Goemon hurts him in a fight. It wasn't what he wanted, it never was. What he truly wanted was to now for sure who he was to Lupin and if he was as important to him, as he himself is to Goe.
At least that's the picture all of part 5 episodes paint in my head.
And yet.. Goemon never gets the answer!! Lupin never reasures him, they never talk about there relationships, instead the focus of the story shifts to something else. And i truly dont understand why! Part 5 puts alot of emphases on to human relationships and yet.. This conflict has alot of built up to it, be it in a form of this two acting like freinds, Goemon questioning if Lupin even needs him and Jigen or.. Lupin outright SAYING THAT GOEMON IS HIS FREIND ONLY TO NEVER REPEAT IT TO GOE HIMSELF WICH HE ACTUALLY NEEDED!!
And yet.. this just never gets addressed in the series...Wich makes me extremely sad, because Goemon's and Lupin's friendship is one of the things wich i like the most about "Lupin the third" and.. it just sad how it gets either neglected or dealt with.. like this in recent seasons
Anyway, what do YOU think?
#i have been going insane about the fact that goemon was actually fighting himself ever since i rewatched part 5 with relevant context#i didn't catch the significance of it the first time around (bc P5 was literally the first Lupin thing i ever watched)#but GODDAMN it changes EVERYTHING!!!!!#not only is he fighting himself he's fighting his part 1 self#the one who was under momochi's influence; who had been raised up as a weapon for years; who didn't know anything other than violence#lupin iii#goemon ishikawa

I need more Persona content that explores more of the users interacting with their Persona more aside for combat, kinda like how it speaks to them before their awakening in P5. Like I'd imagine the Wildcards having a talk with the many personas inside their head (and are probably responsible for most of their choices if not for the player) but also there's how Chidori considered Medea her only friend despite it being artificially subjected into her and how the fusion with Hermes into Trismegistus would go. I also imagine things like little Mitsuru only having Penthesilea accompany her as she gets sent into another "medical checkup" from her family's private doctors, Akechi with Robin Hood and Loki being his substitute parent figures, Yusuke telling Goemon about his minimal budget and what to do about it... the list of ideas for this goes on!
#personas are essence of one's self so its safe to assume they're inner thoughts#persona#persona 3#persona 5#chidori yoshino#mitsuru kirijo#goro akechi#yusuke kitagawa

Please tell me about your P5 headcanons and your shauake AU im begging. Infodump Everything
Hi, thanks for asking! Well, here's the barebones of the AU:
It's a Shuake-centric AU named Fireflies In A Jar. It's essentially a "Akechi heals" AU. It's a mix of the vanilla storyline and Royal storyline.
Essentially, Akira decides to stay in Tokyo after defeating Maruki. He mainly stayed for the Thieves....and Akechi.
See, because the Akechi he saw in Maruki's reality was the real Akechi. He survived. And he wanted to run away from society....from Akira.
Akira (bless him) tries to help Akechi heal properly from Shido's abuse. So the rest of the Phantom Thieves assist as well, but from a distance.
I don't really have headcanons for this AU, but I do have one headcanon for P5 that I hold near to my heart. My hc is that the Metaverse actually affects the PTs in reality, either obviously or subtlety. Like:
Akira laughs like Arsene. On some occasions, he even gains Arsene's wings.
Ryuji sees a pirate ship fly near his home at nights.
Ann sometimes acts like a cat. She likes to scratch Ryuji like A LOT.
Yusuke can withstand the cold (get it cuz goemon has the ice element-)
Morgana's initials are M.Z. The Z shouldn't be there, but he can't help it.
Makoto owns a motorcycle. She takes Haru and Ann for rides. She also picks up Sae from work.
Haru has her PT weapon hidden in her closet somewhere. She jokingly threatens to bring it along with her when one of her friends had their bad day caused by someone.
Since Futaba is the oracle of the group, she knows certain things beforehand. For example, when she's going to type anything on her computer, she already knows what she's going to type.
Akechi can deliberately turn himself psychotic (see; the shuake showtime), and of course he uses it to scare the Thieves. Someone accidentally stepped on his shoe? His face twitches and his eyes glow a terrifying blood red. Then he laughs and say that he's joking- just don't fucking do it again.
Sumire found glass slippers at her doorstep. She keeps them in a box so they don't break.
This is what I have for now! Sorry that this is so long lmao

When the male personas go underwear shopping a thread
Arsene would only buy the most fanciest and elegant underwear
Zorro’s wouldn’t care how beautiful the underwear is and just buy the more practical ones
Captain Kidd would only buy beach underwear makes him feel like a true pirate he says
Goemon would probably only buy Fundoshis
Robin Hood would buy very fashionable underwear with designs on them
Loki would definitely buy the more kinkier and lacier underwear and maybe socks to.

Fox in P5X
(last updated 6/4/24!)
Yusuke Kitagawa is primarily present as a Phantom Idol, or cognitive teammate. He has not yet made any appearance in the main story, outside of his lines during the Sae Palace escape intro cutscene.
In the P5 Collab’s Museum Chapter, Wonder's group runs into trouble shortly after entering the museum, but is rescued by Fox and Panther. Fox quickly bonds with Soy, after Fox mentions that he hasn't really eaten all day, and Soy promises to make him some ramen once they get out of the Metaverse.
He's very open about his backstory with Madarame, and is generally one of the first to point out distinct similarities and differences between the museum and Madarame's Palace. He also tends to take the direct approach as far as their plans go, including being in favor of just stepping through the infrared security lasers to steal what they think is the Core, and later suggesting they go right into attacking the guard of the real Core.
Yusuke can also be found in Leblanc in the real world, which Wonder is for some reason capable of crossing worlds to visit. He won’t appear until Wonder has been rescued by him and Panther in the Museum Chapter, but seems to have been looking forward to meeting him when they are eventually at Leblanc at the same time, and asks to draw him. Yusuke otherwise tends to talk about his art (and food, or lack thereof).
Fox’s Persona Goemon is categorized as an Ice type, and resists Ice while being weak to Fire.
Goemon is a Control Persona, meaning he’s good at dealing with groups of enemies, and his trait gives him a chance to counterattack whenever he takes damage. His first ice attack skill hits all enemies and is guaranteed to freeze one; his second ice attack skill deals five hits to random enemies, prioritizing those that haven't been hit yet (doing less damage with each subsequent hit to the same enemy), and does more damage if Fox is shielded; and his support skill guarantees he will counter the next attack to hit him (or he will counter at the end of the round automatically anyway), while also strengthening his counter and making it hit all enemies instead of just the one that attacked. Yusuke also gets a shield, and temporarily stops being weak to fire, becomes immune to mental status effects, and taunts all enemies for the duration of this skill. His passive skills cause shields to boost his damage, and increase his ability to penetrate enemy shields whenever he gives himself a shield.
As in P5, his melee weapon is a katana, while his ranged weapon is an assault rifle. His Highlight is shown from 1:05-1:17 in this video, and it hits all enemies with an ice attack, and boosts Fox's chance of counterattacking.
His recommended card sets are 1) 4 of Cups (Luxury) + Page of Coins (Growth), 2) 2 of Swords (Peace) + Page of Wands (Acceptance).
The game recommends teaming him up with 1) Yuki and Puppet, 2) Rin, 3) Mont.

It was because of that rescue that the original Phantom Thieves discovered that the Metaverse had somehow opened back up again after sealing itself nearly two decades ago
It’s unknown how they got into the Metaverse, but Fuyuki thinks it might’ve had something to do with their parents kicking them out after a fight

I haven't played Royal, so all my knowledge is second-hand. Imagine my surprise when I find out that the game makes it a point to differentiate between Phantom Thieves and Gentleman Thieves. That got me thinking: does this distinction exist in the Japanese language?
Hello, thanks for your ask! The answer is that it sort of does. In English, a "phantom thief" and a "gentleman thief" are the same thing—a literary concept of a thief who dresses sharply, probably isn't that evil or means well (though I can think of one extremely malevolent example), and who exists in books, movies and video games.
The term usually translated as "gentleman thief" in P5 is 義賊 gizoku, mainly referring to Ishikawa Goemon, who Yusuke's persona Goemon is based on. While one popular dictionary has gizoku as "gentleman thief", that's more correctly a kaitou—a gizoku is what we'd call a "social bandit", an outlaw accepted by the public for one reason or another. Robin Hood is one example; the Phantom Thieves, at various points in their career, would be another. They're even sometimes referred to in-game as gizoku—as noble outlaws.
kaitou and gizoku both have pages on Japanese Wikipedia—a gizoku is primarily a real-life phenomenon (it lists Ishikawa Goemon, as well as Arsene Lupin and Robin Hood). So when the localisation says "gentleman thief", it means a Robin Hood-style noble outlaw; when it says "phantom thief", it means the literary trope that the Phantom Thieves personify. Even though these ought to be the same thing. Clear as mud, huh?
