Yes, I love them together so much! They are by far the sweetest ship I have! OTP Question Meme 12. Who initiates kisses? At first, Kyrah does most of the time. It would take Shery a while to get comfortable enough to initiate I think, but they even out more once she does. 18. Who leaves little notes in the other’s one lunch? (Bonus: what does it usually say?) Omg, they both do! Shery's are actual notes, "I love you!" "Have a great day" that sort of thing. Very sweet and uplifting notes. Whereas Kyrahlise leaves doodles with a cute little heart in the corner. 26. What would be their theme song? Whenever Kyrahlise is away on a mission she draws the places she goes to and sends the drawings back to Shery. Also, they like cuddle up together under a blanket while Kyrah reads a book aloud to Shery. She tries to get Shery to read some too, but I think Kyrah does most of the reading. Hazformers Theory: Lockdown Wouldn't Be Able To Hide From Niffty

even if they haven't really spoken to each other, and Lockdown and the other Decepticons probably don't know how crazy Niffty can be...

and if Blitzwing had been around her the most than them, he might be use to her, and doesn't mind her craziness.

he might also know about her interest in bad boys, and how she can be with them, so she might try to take some of Lockdown's fur as a souvenir, like how she did with Valentino, and I'm wondering if Valentino could have a type of semi split personality, though I guess it could be my imagination...

Lockdown could become Niffty's target of bad boy interest, and who she could see as even bigger bad boy than him would be Shockwave, who if she tries to get close to, it would be Blitzwing's turn to be Helicopter Dad to her just like how Angel was before.

Niffty was of course a bit drunk and trying to take cleaning supplies that didn't belong to her, and Angel got on to her for it, and to calm her down he had her play with the kitty, which happen to be Husk.

so we have the Helicopter Dad Angel and Tired Dad Husk who he has to let Niffty pull on his ears and wings so she can keep happy.

Angel just seem like he was being like a Helicopter Dad to Niffty, it was really sweet, so it be interesting if Niffty did try to get close to Shockwave, Blitzwing stops her because he knows it be dangerous.

of course if Shockwave did fall for Niffty, if not right away but slowly and without fully realizing it...

and ya know, even if Primus loves all the Cybertronians that are like his children, don't mean he is a perfect parent, and he could be a Gray-Parent. I mean there is that whole Autobots having more planets than Decepticons and I had talked about the numbers before, and it just proves that the caste system on Cybertron in the TFA Timeline is a bit corrupted.

for all we know, Lockdown could of became the way he is because of the corruption on Cybertron.

even if those on Optimus's Team believe that the Decepticons were always cold energoned beings, they would have to face the truth that isn't 100% true...because at least they, the Decepticons don't take over already organic worlds that already had organic life on it, though they, Optimus's Team, might not know about that corrupted side of Cybertron because they aren't on the same rank as Ultra Magnus, who I still believe is really Megazarak.

I think I still like TFP Magnus better, he might still be a bossy dad, but he could truly be a Ultra Magnus, and not a Magnus who was once known as Megazarak.

well he would know how it would feel being the one hunted down like a bounty and I guess that could be what makes it funny.

Sick Roy = won't admit how sick he is, knows how to take care of himself but often can't make himself suffer through doing it, also a very bad patient because he doesn't want to need help Sick Jamie = the biggest crybaby you've ever seen in your life but on purpose for attention not genuinely, great at taking care of himself but a good/willing patient too Sick Keeley = bad patient just because she wants to be left the fuck alone; roy and jamie let her know they're there for her for whatever she wants and then take the guest room until she recovers and can stand them again lmao

Do they always say 'i love you' before leaving?

Nope! Jamie and Roy have very different hours from Keeley, and she'll fucking kill them if they wake her up very much earlier than she needs to be, for one. Additionally, Jamie and Keeley are both naturally pretty independent and it's more their instinct to just go about their individual lives sharing intimacy sort of incidentally (except for date nights and whatever else like that). On the other hand, Roy will always kiss Keeley goodbye in the morning, softly enough to not wake her. It's unbearably romantic to see, Roy gently pressing his lips to the back of her hand without a word while she sleeps, and it makes Jamie very horny lmfao. Also, despite Jamie being naturally pretty independent/self-sufficient/etc, he actually also enjoys the Roy's clinginess without really needing a break like Keeley does. Of course it probably also helps there that Roy has multiple outlets for his feelings with Jamie with training and their whole weird pseudo-total power exchange thing they've got going on lmao. It's not just always being in his space and being all lovey and turning him on and that. Anyway, point being, Jamie and Keeley don't particularly have any need to hear that every day or to say goodbye (as long as they know they're coming back), and Roy finds other ways to fill his need for constant habitual expressions of care that are more lowkey for Keeley. And then of course Roy can literally do whatever the fuck he wants or could ever imagine to Jamie and Jamie will almost certainly be into it lmfao. Including good morning I love yous and goodbye I love yous and goodnight I love yous and good morning/goodnight I love you texts when they're at away games and they're two whole entire hotel rooms away and are going to see each other imminently. I mean, it is the central point of the novel. But even aside from that, LWJ is consistently only ever interested in WWX. I'm not saying he shouldn't be interpreted as gay, but I am saying that even if he is gay it's secondary to his actual sexual identity which is Weiyingsexual. I'm not treading any new ground here.

Personally I don't find Wangxian interesting, but I at least believe they love each other and are compatible in the sense that they are both selfish in slightly different ways that mesh well for their own private universe. Not so great for others in their orbit, but part of that is authorial fiat so I try to be fair about what I hold against them.

I don't think CQL successfully executed the changes it made to Wangxian in having them click and partner up from the beginning, but I do think it was necessary to at least attempt to rebalance the relationship. In MDZS, WWX genuinely does not reciprocate LWJ's feelings in his first life beyond a very deeply buried and not particularly inevitable spark. His first life is really centred on his relationships with JC and JYL and they are the tragic 'romance' (in the traditional sense). LWJ only gets upgraded during the second life. Kind of awkward to do your sweeping romance if it isn't a romance in the 35+ episodes of flashbacks, so I don't blame them for trying. And I do like the Colin Firth vibes WYB brought to his LWJ.

Aside from not finding the idea of LWJ with anyone else convincing, let me take the opportunity to pettily sideswipe at Chengxian and shoving LWJ in to make it what? Wangchengxian? Is that what it's called? Either way, nooooooo thank you. You can't get much more fraternal than WWX and JC's idiot bickering, and even if they weren't such classic stupid boys together, JC and LWJ loathe one another with the kind of loathing that does not give way to a rendition of I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face. (Incidentally, in the original stage version Eliza walks out on Higgins never to return, and it is awesome.)

favorite platonic/familial relationships

Obviously it's his relationship with LXC (and by extension LQR?). Just absolutely fascinating. Their rapport is very sweet, as is LXC's protectiveness and gentle trolling. LWJ is not a particularly good didi, but LXC both doesn't notice and doesn't mind.

More seriously, though he was also raised with harsh discipline, in comparative terms LWJ is the spoilt baby of the family. As is often the result when we encounter morally rigid characters in MDZS, he is also in many respects hypocritical. Clearly I have a lot of negative things to say about him as a brother to LXC, but I'm not interested in demonising him and what's really interesting about it is that by and large this uneven dynamic works for the Twin Jades. Right up until it doesn't.

When LXC really needs LWJ to come through for him, he just doesn't. I'm not even talking about LWJ's behaviour leading up to and during the Temple, which is objectionable in the sense that he refuses to give JGY the benefit of the doubt that LXC extends to WWX. No, I'm talking about the fact that he bods off for literal months after LXC has just been through the worst experience of his life and lost his closest friend and partner. And I don't want to hear it about LXC being the elder and having a responsibility to take care of LWJ. LWJ owes consideration to his big brother and clan leader, even if that consideration might take a different form.

Here's a thought experiment. After WWX's first death, when LWJ has been whipped 33 times by the discipline whip and dragged himself to rescue LSZ and branded himself in drunken grief, can you imagine LXC bodding off for three months without a word to have picnics with JGY? It's inconceivable isn't it.

I didn't intend for this section to become a hit piece on LWJ and he obviously does love his brother, but in terms of actions it is somewhat of a one way street. The fact that LXC has no other expectations doesn't protect LWJ from my croc-hatted judgement face.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with

Righteous LWJ. Oh, please. In MDZS, righteousness goes hand in hand with hypocrisy, and though I doubt MXTX the human being intended LWJ to be read as thoroughly selfish, the (translation of) the text she wrote is a depiction of a profoundly selfish man. And that's not a bad thing, because his selfishness coupled with the occasions when he is genuinely altruistic makes him more interesting than if he really were a moralising ice cube with a ribbon tied around it.

I'm going to be lazy and suggest X-Men AU again just because his secondary power would definitely be organic diamond form like Emma Frost. I don't think he'd also be a telepath, but the idea of that is funny because he could read WWX's mind and know for certain that WWX isn't (currently) into him. But as a serious answer, organic diamond form as a secondary power and then primary power the same as Alison Blaire. I see no reason why his mutant name wouldn't be Dazzler too.

I think he only has like one outfit. I'm sorry, I'm not cool enough to be able to distinguish between different varieties of plain white robes. In CQL I prefer first life LWJ because they put that massive ornament on second life LWJ's head to make him look older and taller but actually they created an unfortunate perspective effect where he just looks even shorter.

Sabin!

Oooo, that's a good one! Sabin's a character I never thought much about when I was younger, but I've come to appreciate him. I think it helps I've come across a lot of great fan art of him, so he's become a surprisingly big presence in my reblogs.

Favorite thing about him:

Just as a surface thing, he seems like such a good guy -- down to earth, passionate, ready and willing to fight for his loved ones. I love his big beefy design. He has some seriousness in his backstory that's there for exploring, but there's also this very fun silliness to him -- holding up the corner of a burning house, diving into a river after Ultros, and of course suplexing the train. I think if I have to cite one favorite thing, it's the potential for humor, how he can do these very extreme off-the-wall things which seem to feel perfectly normal to him.

Least favorite thing about him:

He feels underutilized in the story, especially given he's one of your core party members in the second half of the game. It feels like, character-wise, he has less going on than Celes, Edgar, or Setzer.

Favorite line:

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but his laughing graphic is really cute.

brOTP:

The contrast between him and Edgar is enjoyable. Honestly, I feel like Sabin's bluff straightforwardness could play well with a lot of the party members; someone could write an interesting story about him and, say, Setzer on a mission/heist together, and have no end of fun contrasting them. But I'm going to go with Celes -- she's cold and stern, he's warm and cuddly, but I think they could meet in the middle and have some great character moments -- especially given how they both abandoned the lives other people had planned for them.

OTP:

I don't have one for Sabin. I think, at least at this point in his life, he's not looking for anything big, so if he did get with someone it would be pretty casual. Like with the previous answer, I think he has a lot of potential for fun and humor in any pairing, especially with a strongly contrasting personality, but there's also enough seriousness in his backstory to allow for some deeper, more emotional moments. I've seen some people float the idea of SabinTerra, and that definitely has possibilities -- Terra has very little concept of human love on any level, and Sabin would be able to relate to her as both a friend and a love interest. Plus, you just know he gives good hugs.

nOTP:

None that's a very interesting hot take -- I wouldn't go with Edgar? -- like I said, I haven't put too much thought into Sabin's love life. Even though Sabin's very warm and friendly, I think it might be difficult to write him in some pairings, at least believably.

Random Headcanon:

Oh, I'll have to think of something right now. Okay. Sometimes he misses the ghost that accompanied him on the ghost train. They didn't talk much, but he liked the ghost.

Unpopular Opinion:

Do people have polarizing opinions on Sabin? Hm. I think it's equally valid to draw him with a scruffy beard or without. How's that for controversy?

Song I associate with them:

I thought about this, and I came up with "I'm on My Way" by the Proclaimers. It's very upbeat, a little goofy and bouncy, a little forceful but in a jocular way. I can imagine Sabin singing this under his breath as he mountain climbs (or furiously paddles down the river after Ultros).

There he is, covered in who knows what, hauling a whatever-that-is over his shoulder, in the floofiest yellow pants he could buy. He looks absolutely feral, but at the same time, you can see the resemblance to Edgar. I also really like his expression -- gazing off into the distance, something gentle and happy about the set of his mouth. His life isn't for everyone, but it's right for him.

It isn't that Kendis wouldn't fight for them -- but Kendis is more of a smack talker for "honor" fights. If Kendis is fighting fighting that fight for honor is usually someone's life is in danger. Andy is similar -- though he'd step up if Mason was like betrayed or tricked. Felix would try to fight for Pierre's honor, but Pierre would stop him.

Pierre x Felix: This is cheesy but light, Pierre associates Felix with light -- specifically light peaking through a shadow makes him think of Felix. Not ALWAYS but when his made wanders? And he catches that? Yeah. Also rainbows. Especially those cute rainbows drawn on concrete. For Felix it is old books and museums are no longer Nat, lmao. Stray cats. And he will find himself thinking of a joke he knows will make Pierre that slight smile and soft chuckle [he will be right].

Valdam: Val says broken pottery. But Val, I don't think looks at something and is like oh, that is Adam. But more it is moments like: Adam would get what I mean here. I wouldn't have to waste time on crap with Adam. For Adam, it is leather jackets qweer4re s lmao. Imagine Adam getting war flashbacks over the word 'greaser'. Also certain scents have become SO Val.

Keva: Ava associates post-its with Kendis. Kendis has introduced highlighters and colorful post-its to her life, Ms. Paper Can't Be Hacked. For Kendis, cargo pants -- mostly because Ava has allowed them to make use of the pockets. I think it is that 'Ava is so dependable', but it is easier t say the pockets.

Andy x Mason: IDK. Is it a cop out to say quiet? I need to ponder. I also think each other's 'vices'. Mason sees alcohol on the rocks and thats Andy

Kat: Everything. IDK, my dude. Kai and Nat balance each other so well, it arguably be like 'oh, if they were here tehy would handle this taht way' ... though I feel Nat would think it more. Kendis is very particular about touching -- I wouldn't say she is touch adverse [at least not in twc verse, at least not strictly speaking] and certain touches makes them feel closed in and/or clausterphobic. I feel Nate would cue in and would never ask. Ava would never ask either, but I feel it started out as a teasing thing about Ava's tenseness and then became a thing Kendis did sometimes for her.

Val is too awkward for this for this shit -- Val is intimacy adverse, lmao. No ... but it would make them jump out their skin if Adam tried and if they tried it on Adam and it went wrong, they'd just skitter up the wall like a frightened spider.

ouuughhh, I follow OP for gifsets of yearning, but holy shit this set is also from a REALLY good episode. Like, it's not perfect, but it's a VERY solid attempt at depicting neurodivergence. The show is set in a period where it wasn't understood the same way as we do now, but (importantly) a time when more people were more likely to be more tolerant of unusual behavior because of WWI and how everyone knew someone with shellshock.

Anyway.

Phryne meets Beatrice, who is your classic autistic character. She has her one safe food, she is not good at people, she is academic and hyper focused on her special interest topic, and she is being maaaassssively bullied. Like "people put dead rats in her bed" bullied, because of her bad social skills and because. She is the only woman at this university! It's the 20s! Someone poisons her, and it's literally unclear if it's just the bullying or related to the murder mystery for a bit.

And the there's Phryne. It is of course the usual thing here would be that the heroine would be uncommonly kind and understanding of this strange woman. And you could say that's what Phryne is doing, but imo it's really not. Phryne fuckin VIBES with Beatrice, she looks at her and goes "aw shit she's just like me for real." Beatrice makes Phryne sad and uncomfortable -- not because she finds the social skills unacceptable but she looks at this whole situation the same way I watch people bully one of my coworkers. Like "that will be me if I don't keep my perfect always-chill mask on."

At one point, Beatrice is trying to not have a meltdown freak the fuck out and she goes out into the hallway and presses her head against the wall. And Phryne joins her. They have a cute little stim session together. And in fact, she stays there a while after Beatrice leaves, pondering, decompressing.

Like, sure, a lot of this is done with silent acting that you're supposed to impress your own feelings onto. But I can't imagine some of this really making sense outside of an autistic lens. Phryne reacts to this girl with recognition and confused grief.

The whole ep made me just... look at Phryne again and recalculate. It is a really big shift, a new way to understand what drives the character and how she has gotten wrapped up in solving mysteries and why she lives her life the way she does. She went thru the war and was like... fuck it, I am going to have the life I want, and actually did it. And it's always been clear that couldn't have happened without the inheritance and certain things about the time period. but the WAY she thinks about sex and relationships, the WAY she will not stand for injustice, the WAY she handles and thinks about the law... it is not allistic, lol

(Oh, and Jack loves her for her inflated sense of justice. Which is part of the real her, not the mask, which is what makes him special and makes them the OTP.)

Hello, dear sunflowerkru. I'm not online very often anymore, but when i get here and it's a tuesday i always read your posts when you tagged me. Thank you for being such a constant in my life. You still ROCK, Blarkes! <3

Thank you for your tags, dearies. I'm using this opportunity to give you a little update on my behalf. My own life is a f...in' mess right now, so i don't want to talk about THAT today. BUT... And that is a HUGE BUT... There are SOME good news to tell you for once today! Finally some light at the end of the dark tunnel i'm feeling i stuck in since december...

My sister (you know, my little sister that was diagnosed with breast cancer right before christmas...) just had her first ultrasound scan since december. And after that she was sending me THIS today:

Translation: "Unfortunately, no new size information about my bastard (she calls her tumor that way) today. (<- I could've basically slapped her, for at first this message sounded SO bad in her words... >.< But then:) Because: He can no longer be adequately represented on the ultrasound image. From what used to be 5 cm to no longer clearly recognizable is a huge step in the right direction." !!!!!!!!!!!

When i read this message i was... i YELLED! I jumped around! THis is the first good news in MONTHS! THe chemotherapy (that is really taking a toll on her...) is WORKING! She's on a good way and knows now for certain, that ALL HER SUFFERING IS NOT IN VAIN! I know, it's not the end of the way, it probably never will be over for her bc she'd always have to be cautious in the future, BUT IT'S A REAL CHANCE! Oh god, i can't even begin to tell you how much this means to me, how important she is to me. I couldn't imagine a life without her in it. She's my best friend... I'm so moved right now i'm almost crying while typing this.

I am so sorry that i couldn't be around here more often. I didn't have the strength for that, or even for the The100-rewatch i was SO looking forward to. It's so sad but I had to put my priorities straight. I don't know if i'll be able to catch up or not. I think i'll rather do the rewatch at my own pace. Even when it'll take YEARS to do it. ;) I still love our delinquents very much. I don't want to be without them or their story.

Hi Sunflowerkru! It's already tuesday ! Here I am again in the Paris area, after a few days in the center of France where I could see my son, whom I had not seen since Christmas. I can tell you that it was good to see him ! I'm taking care of my baby plants, I just repotted them, and some of them look a little bit bad, but they will probably get better soon. Ariel for the character ask

I assume this means Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid, not Ariel in The Tempest. I hope I'm right.

Favorite thing about them: She's just an all-around likable heroine. Lively, warm, fun-loving, strong-willed, passionate, flawed in relatable ways, and sympathetic in her longing to explore a new world (which can be viewed through several different layers of applicability – from a teenager longing to enter the adult world, to a young woman seeking freedom from patriarchal oppression, to a young LGBT+ person seeking a life where they can be their authentic self, to an open-minded person defying their family's prejudice against another culture, and probably more), as well as her complex relationship with her loving yet controlling father. And of course her singing voice, courtesy of Jodi Benson, is outstanding.

Least favorite thing about them: Her deal with Ursula, not only because it's foolish and nearly results in Ursula taking over the sea kingdom (although I don't blame Ariel for not predicting that Ursula would use her to bait Triton into sacrificing himself), but because it's selfish – choosing to leave her father and her sisters forever without even saying goodbye. Now I don't hold it against her. She's an impulsive teen, she's in love, she's deeply hurt by her father destroying all her human treasures, and this is the only way she sees to be her true self and live a life of her own choosing. Nor do I find fault with her choice to become human, just the circumstances. But it's still a mistake, and while she does apologize to her father when he comes to save her from Ursula, it's brief and quickly overshadowed by Triton's self-sacrifice for her.

Three things I have in common with them:

Random headcanon: She was the only single birth of Triton and Athena's daughters. Her sisters are all sets of twins or triplets. This explains why none of them are married yet or seem much older than she is, even though she's the youngest of seven.

Unpopular opinion: While I understand all the popular feminist criticism aimed at her, I can't bring myself to agree with it. I wish people would learn about Howard Ashman, and how much of himself he put into Ariel, before they label her a "whiny brat" who "sells her soul for a man" and who "should have died like Andersen's mermaid to show what happens when you sacrifice everything for lust." Knowing that the movie's lyricist was a gay man living in the middle of the AIDS crisis, which would claim his life two years later, and that he infused Ariel's character with his own feelings of alienation and longing for freedom to live and love as he chose (even her voice actress Jodi Benson has confirmed that Ariel is Ashman in many ways), really makes you view her in a new light. So does knowing that Andersen's original story has much the same subtext: Andersen was bisexual, and the tale was evidently inspired by his own "fish out of water" feelings and his unrequited love for another man. And just because Andersen, writing in the 19th century, viewed a self-sacrificial death and heavenly reward as the only possible "happy" ending for someone like him his mermaid, why shouldn't a modern adaptation offer more hope and give Ariel an earthly happy ending? Now of course Ariel isn't a gay man, she's a straight girl, and it is fair to question the message her story sends to girls, since any other message is only subtext. But it's still worthwhile to know the story's entire context, and question whether your critiques of her character seem to say "Misfits should suck it up and stay in their place" or not.

The Feeling of Being Alive

Summary: Kai decides to indulge in an hour of outside reading time after a long life day of being emperor. Cinder, looking for him, decides to join in. (WC: 1.1k)

Warm tendrils of sunshine brushed Kai's skin, reminding him of what it felt like to be alive. The air around him tittered with a soft spring breeze, accompanied by the birds' blissful chatter. Cherry blossoms fell around him, coloring the grass pink and white.

Earlier that day, Kai had spent a miserable morning indoors, meeting with localized political figures throughout the Commonwealth and discussing ways to implement better infrastructure to support a growing population. Kai was more knowledgeable on the subject than most—he had to be. As the emperor, it was his job to know everything about the country he cared for. He couldn't imagine a more fulfilling job, but sometimes, when spring was in the air and everything outside of his magnificent palace looked so lovely, he couldn't stand his occupation.

He'd decided to give himself an hour—just one—outside. The world could carry on without him for sixty minutes while he laid out in the sun, book in hand, as he enjoyed the feeling of being alive.

It had been years since he'd indulged in such a luxury. Not since his father had died, and even then, Kai's childhood—his recreational time—had come to an end with his mother's death. Things needed to be taken seriously when there was only one person between you and the responsibility for the lives of billions of people.

In short, Kai couldn't remember the last time he'd given a moment to himself alone.

So he read, eyes tracing a story from his childhood, fingers rubbing the corner of the page, relishing the feeling of a real paper book—an endangered species in a digital world. The book had once been his mother's, a favorite of hers, as told by her notes lovingly written inside the margins. Beloved passages were underlined, corners folded down to mark favored parts. Reading the book felt like Kai was conversing with his mother for the first time in a decade.

"Hey."

Kai looked up and blinked, placing himself back into reality, beneath the blossoming cherry tree, settled on the dirt, clutching a tattered book. But when he saw who had spoken, he only smiled.

"Hi," Kai replied, reaching a hand out to her. She took it, fingers lacing with his, then sat beside him, tucking the edges of her periwinkle dress beneath her legs. She leaned her head on his shoulder, tilting her head back just enough to press a kiss to his cheek. "What's the book?"

Kai tilted the cover toward Cinder and she hummed appreciatively. She leaned into him, her arm hooking through his as she snuggled close, eyes closed. Kai turned his head to look at her, noting the way her hair was falling from its careful updo and about her face. The sunlight danced over her features, coloring her younger than he usually thought of her, but probably just as old as she actually was. Being the Emperor and Empress of the Eastern Commonwealth had aged them. He pressed a kiss to her forehead and she smiled, nuzzling closer.

"How'd the meeting go?" Kai asked.

"Good." Cinder sighed. "Okay. It could have been better. But I think we're finally making some headway. If not, I see a lot of yelling at European representatives in my future, but I can live with that."

Kai laughed.

"Torin's been looking for you," Cinder added.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. But not in that frantic way of his. You're not missing anything. I think he just likes to know where you are in general."

"Can't blame him," Kai said. He leaned his head against Cinder's, closing his eyes. "I mean, I was kidnapped by this crazy lunar girl once. I think that was pretty traumatic for him."

Cinder scoffed. "Torin literally helped me kidnap you. He told me where your second ID chip was and everything. Without him, you would have had to marry Levana that day."

"I still married Levana," Kai said, "but I also married the girl who kidnapped me, so there's that. I must have Stockholm syndrome or something."

"Probably," Cinder said, her words lighter because she was smiling.

"Were you sent out to bring me back?" Kai asked. He didn't want to ask, but as a human and as an adult and, most importantly, as the Emperor of the Eastern Commonwealth, he did a lot of things he didn't want to.

Cinder shook her head, her hair tickling Kai's ear. "No. I just wanted to see you," she said. "I missed you."

The frankness of her words warmed Kai to his core, as if the sunshine had reached his heart. He had seen her only hours ago, but he knew what she meant. Even now that they were married and living on the same planet under the same roof, every second that she wasn't by his side felt like a second wasted. The world wasn't nearly as unbearable when she was near.

"Well," Kai said, "I'm glad you found me."

"Me too."

Kai wrapped his arm around Cinder's shoulders, and she hugged his middle, her head resting half on his shoulder and half on his chest. He opened the book once again, propping it against his knees and steadying it with his free hand.

He started at the beginning, reading aloud to Cinder. It was just the two of them, alone under a blossoming cherry tree, enjoying the feeling of being alive and being with one another and knowing that, no matter what, they always had each other to lean on. He read with the carefree air of a man in love, giving each character a more ridiculous voice than the last, and adding his own quips here and there just to hear Cinder's gentle laugh bubble against him. And when she pointed at the notes scribbled in the margins, he read her his mother's words and told her stories of the woman—stories that he hadn't known he still remembered.

They traded laughter and soft words and affection like common currency, but Kai treasured it all the same, storing this memory in his mind for the less remarkable—less wondrous—days in his future.

"We should probably get back at it," Kai said glumly, eyes marking the lowering sun, knowing that they'd been outside for much longer than an hour.

Cinder nodded, but only squeezed Kai tighter. "One more chapter?"

Kai pressed a kiss to the top of her head and obliged.
