Clone Wars

The first problem was that the Supreme Commander didn’t give them enough warning about what they were stumbling into, when they were ordered out into it. Someone above General Kenobi’s head sent the men planetside in standard-issue gear, without thermal clothing or heat packs or sleeping kit or enough food for more than a single day. They had no extra ammo, no tents, no heavy artillery. They had barely any warning.

The second problem was that Supreme Command underestimated the strength of the enemy; it was supposed to be an easy enough job, holding the planet long enough to route the Seppies and then right back to the ship, leaving a contingent of troopers stationed there to retain what they’d won.

The third problem - the real problem - came when they let themselves become surrounded and the Separatists cut their supply line. Cody’s partially at fault for that one; a better Commander would’ve seen it coming. A better Commander would’ve had more backup plans, been prepared for more contingencies.

Being cut off from re-supply would’ve been a problem before the snow started.

Then the snow started.

I truly recommend their amazing story on AO3, for the want of a jewel. It has everything! Warlord Barbarian, Sorcery, Beauty as a Weapon (but not the way you think!), Sex and Ace Positivity, and just a wonderful world full of rich and interesting characters.

I haven't read OG works in a very long time and I'm so glad to have ftwoaj as the one that broke my streak!

seriously I do very much recommend this book. it reminded me somewhat of when the angels left the old country in terms of how much yiddish and jewish intra-community terminology was peppered into the plot, and funnily enough sacha lamb the author did in fact give it a blurb

this book has everything: jewish vampire women who shapeshift into owls and yiddish theater and syrian jewish history and an israeli lesbian possessed by a dybbuk! what more could you want honestly

四樓的天堂 | Heaven on the 4th Floor (2021)

One drama has crept into my life during the last days of 2024 to become my favourite one I've watched this year, and I barely know how to start talking about it. But let's give this a go anyways.

Heaven on the 4th Floor (四樓的天堂) is a Taiwanese drama starring Anthony Wong, Hsieh Ying-xuan, and Fandy Fan. I would call it mostly slice-of-life with some melodrama, as there's no strongly focused overarching plot. Rather, it follows a cast of characters and the struggles/hurdles in their lives they have to face, all of whom are helped/guided by the something all of them have in common— seeing a tuina masseuse named Tianyi (Anthony Wong).

I don't quite know how to describe the way this show develops, as everyone's arcs separate and overlap at different times, but I would say Heaven at its core is about healing. First and foremost about healing the relationship one has with their body and oneself, but also those with other people, with the past, and with the present-day world around someone. There's some interesting juxtaposition between the physical healing Tianyi can offer his clients, and the mental healing Hsieh Ying-xuan's psychologist character provides for her own, with a look at how one cannot do the work of the other. Some characters are recurring throughout the show, others you get to watch take a step forward in the span of one episode, but eventually, no one remains where they were at the beginning.

The character who has the most growth throughout all this, in my opinion, is Fandy Fan's Yuzhou, a young graffiti artist. It's by meeting Tianyi that he gradually manages to stop hiding from the past, but also start looking with hope toward a future, and find a way to be better in tune with himself, his body, and the art he creates.

Aside from healing, Heaven is also about loss, and how someone reckons with it. Past loss (the disappearance of one's loved ones, the yearning for something you never got to have), present/recent loss (the death of a family member, the ending of a relationship), and loss that inevitably lies ahead (the destruction of one's home and the fight to resist it, even if it's all in vain). Characters war with their grief and are forced to find ways to release and gradually accept it, and while my heart ached for different people at different points in time, it was beautiful to watch.

I cannot stress enough that with all this combined, Heaven is one of the most cathartic pieces of media I've ever seen. I cried an unexpected number of times, from the beginning of the show to the end, and it was never, ever in a bad way. The three leads especially did a truly incredible job bringing the viewer into their lives, taking them along for the emotional ride, and I wish all the actors had won awards for that (only one of them did, but she truly deserved it).

Production-wise, I also adore the quality of this show. It's somehow very soothing to watch, visually, and the accompanying soundtrack made me tear up several times. I had to shake myself out of a daze every time I took a break from watching; it both felt like I'd run a marathon, but also had been sitting still, head quiet, and had had someone tell me not to worry about anything else in the world for a while. (It also made me feel more physically present in my body. My shoulders haven't been un-tense in years, and I think thanks to Heaven I'm going to have to do something about that.)

In addition, this isn't the main focus of the show, but queerness is worked into it in wonderfully ordinary ways. There's more than one queer character and a trans character who show up in this, and one protagonist who is either heavily coded as or possibly explicitly aroace spectrum, depending on how much you read into it. Her arc ended up being one of my favourites; the show deals with her relationships lining up with aroace experiences in a way I haven't really seen onscreen before.

Overall, I'm absolutely going to rewatch Heaven in the future, when I feel that I need to return to that story. If you want a grounded, very character-driven show to get gently lost in for a while, this is it.

(Though admittedly, I know this drama definitely isn't going to be for everyone. It's a little bit sleepy-going, and not everyone is interested in or is braced to deal with the emotions of the story. Normally even I'm not, but here I am. However, if you're interested, here's the trailer for Heaven on the 4th Floor:

And I don't tend to do this, but I'm also going to toss out two tracks that sound how this show feels, to me: In My Breath Again from the soundtrack of After Yang, and 披星戴月的想你 by Accusefive. Sit with those for a while and see what you think, if it helps you decide whether to watch or not.)

Note: Unless you have Taiwanese Netflix, you're gonna have to jump on the pirate ship to find this show. However, as far as I'm aware there have never been English subtitles made for it on any site, so if you can't read the Traditional Chinese in the episode raws, then you may have to sit this one out for the time being.)

Can we talk about how the most recognisable gay couples in media are written by women? Can we talk about how queer men can't even write about ourselves, how we are only allowed to exist when it's from the point of view of a straight woman sexualising us?

Can we talk about that? Or am I going to get called misogynistic for pointing out the disparity between who gets the writing deals, & who gets their books turned into movies, & whose shit gets popular versus whose doesn't? Can we talk about how m/m fiction is only allowed when it appeals to a cishet gaze, or is that too much for tumblr to take?

Can we also talk about how trans queer men are even more hated by publishing? Can we talk about how we get shit from both sides? Can we talk about how books about the experiences of being a queer man, written by queer men, never get the same recognition as books written by women on this subject (barring academia which has its own problems)?

The Pathlighter by TGK Translations (Not Rated, Complete)

I love how the author goes about having Star from a different multiverse, especially since it's so different from what we normally see with this concept! Typically we read about different multiverses having minor differences or alternate personalities, but I've yet to see one that goes about describing so many interesting aspects, if that makes sense!

I love the bit with the original Error of the multiverse giving access to Star & immediately distancing himself by removing his own access. He does not want to be involved anymore! He wants to rest & won't be bothered further!

This is actually a really hard one, mainly because I've gotten into so many new fandoms this year. I'm gonna say you know you're better than this by a_grim_thin_hope! This is for Mouthwashing. Daisuke is my favorite, and he shined really well, even if this wasn't about him, LMAO.

Oh.... I'll say I Would Run Away From You if I Could! I think if I was a reader, I'd enjoy this fic. It's mainly a Haikaveh focused streaming AU.

25: Least popular fic by hits you posted this year?

It's an Original Work- which is what I expected- A Crow and a Bleeding-Heart (which are both!! types of birds!!). It's basically a doomed yuri royalty thing with wings and birds and stuff.

Spring

Spring is about a trio of American boys, at a vague time in the past. One of them is sent to a conversion camp, the other two break him out.

TWs for: child abuse, homophobia, guns but no gun violence

Why I liked this one: Definitely the style. Thematically each section opens with a definition of the word spring, which is genius, but it also has this gorgeous innocent-but-not-oblivious POV that is just so nice to read. It portrays love and friendship and community and despite the darker plot it's just so Sweet. Absolutely recommend if you want something to make you smile.

2.

Memories

This is a less than 700 words short story about a really interesting fantasy concept: What if you had to give up a memory, that then becomes a newborn's first and forever clearest memory.

TWs for: nothing as far as I can tell

Why I liked this one: The concept is just really cool, and the way the story underlines just how important a memory is 1) when you can't remember it and 2) when it's not yours is just really nicely done. It's short, it's to the point, if you're into concepts like this you'll think about what else you can do with it for days. What's not to love?

3.

Saturn

I actually found this through a drabble from the author about the characters from this, but the drabble makes very little sense by itself, so here is the "main" story the characters are from.

Saturn is apparently an AU of a comic (if someone figures out where to find said comic I will owe you my life) in which Nicolas, the snarky, lovable protagonist and Orion, a death cultist weirdo, escape the aforementioned death cult.

TWs for: SELF-HARM (a LOT of it), abuse & child abuse, self-mutilation, PTSD, human sacrifice, the kind of mindset that comes with being raised in a fucked up death cult

Why I liked this one: This person is a god among character writers I swear. 18k words of an unfinished fic and I'm as attached to the two protagonists as if I'd read three whole books about them. If you like angst, hurt/comfort, or are a Harrowhark stan, this is for you.

4.

The Faintness of Petrichor

B used to be a god, but now he has no followers and no powers, and lives alone and miserable in an apartment, until an invitation for a ceremony comes along.

TWs for: cultural appropriation, religious trauma inspired writing

Why I liked this one: I love fictional religion, and the worldbuilding in this one is absolutely immaculate. Also, B is an amazing character whose emotions are so SO well shown. I recommend if you love gods being human-but-not-human.

5.

dung upon the earth

This is a character study of the author's OC Jay. We follow him as he grows and takes five sacraments over time.

TWs for: catholicism, catholic guilt, slurs, ableism

Why I liked this one: Look you can get me so so easily with the well-done catholicism. Whether this person did a whole lot of research or has lived experience, they made sure everything is super accurate and I just LOVE that. This is an angsty, guilt-filled, sad story and it's really so good at being one. If you like characters experiencing the trauma of just not quite fitting in, and other quiet and real things that shape one's childhood, you will love this.

Well… Its simply because I was trying to solve this equation that involved Jade Leech + Trey Clover divided by the hypotenuse of the circumference of a square, and multiplied by the osmosis mitosis of the suns pneumonocultramicroscopicsilicavolcanoconiosis… After careful and meticulous solving… I reached the answer: Riddle did not cross the road. I feel as if I had done a service to humanity, and as such, deserve an award.

Now, in reality, what happened was-

BURNOUT 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I hate to admit it… but yeah. As you can tell from my other posts, you can see that I do mention something like burnout in each one of them. And because I want to write more, I took a one day break so I could gather my thoughts, and stay consistent for longer!

If I’m being honest, I actually do this every week on fridays. Mainly because I just dont want school and stuff to get in front of my writing and stability and such. BUT YEAH! Thats it! If I’m gone for one day, be it friday, Monday, hell, even tuesday (who goes on breaks on tuesdays? Actually I dont need anyone to answer that question, tuesdays suck), just know I’ll be back sooner or later.

NOW THATS OUT OF THE WAY…

I NEEDA WRITE 2K + MORE WORDS TODAY!!! SO PROBABLY UPWARDS OF 4-5k!! So yeah… IMA NEED SOME ENCOURAGEMENT!!!

Okay… Well now I’m pretty clueless on whatelse to talk abt… So I’ma go! But ill be posting throughout the day to let you guys know of my progress so yeah!
