Has anyone else had issues with booting orange pi sbcs? I've had no luck with two full sized ones but the zero format one works without issue so far

Custom OSs on the Orange Pi 5!
Tumblr media
So the Orange Pi 5 only supports a handful of premade images for it, meaning that if you want to run another distro you are out of luck.
I wanted really hard to run openSUSE on the thing instead of Debian or Debian-derivates like every single image available for it.
At first I experimented with QEMU and actually got pretty good results. I popped in an NVMe SSD, gave it to the VM and got to work. Outside of losing about a GB of memory to the ARM gods (I actually have no idea why so much memory was lost, the host can only see 7.75GB and even though I handed 7424MB of memory to the guest, it only saw 7GB) everything worked perfectly.
I originally planned to also hand the network interface to the VM, but couldn't figure out how, so I just created a bridge and got the VM on my network. The host did get very high kernel CPU usage when there were lots of traffic so that was a bit annoying.
CPU performance was spotless, got virtually the same as the host, no complains there.
Storage was blazing fast compared to the host, that just had a 10MB/s SD card.
Now, I wasn't about to have 1/8th of my memory stolen from me, so I started looking up how to boot from a custom image and quickly realized that it would be quite a bit of work as I would have to setup the bootloader and kernel. So instead I though "what if I use the same bootloader and kernel as the default images and just load the openSUSE userspace?"
Turns out, its pretty easy. I already had openSUSE physically on the NVMe drive, so all I had to do was point the bootloader to the SSD and it booted first try.
Find out the UUID of the root partition of the new OS (sudo blkid)
Tumblr media
2. Put the new UUID in the bootloader config (/boot/armbianEnv.txt) and if necessary change the rootfstype
Tumblr media
It was very buggy though, and a bunch of programs failed to start like Tailscale and Docker.
I took a look and it turned out I had to copy the kernel modules. So I grabbed the kernel modules from the Armbian install and put them on the new one (/lib/modules/5.10.160-rk35xx), then restarted.
And I was done! everything worked!
There are still some rough edges. Network performance is worse than the VM with the bridge (before I could get something like 800Mbps, now I can only get around 400Mbps). Docker does work, but it takes forever to launch and apparently has a ton of trouble setting up iptables or something, it leaves thousands of error messages on the kernel log, but once it manages to launch it works fine.

5.1 channel analog audio processor
In this project, we developed a 5.1-channel analog audio processor using PT2322 IC. PT2322 is an inexpensive analog audio processor introduced by Princeton Technology Corporation. It contains 6-channel individual channel attenuators, a 3-way tone control system for front-end speakers, and a 3D audio simulation system.
Tumblr media
In this design, we combine PT2322 with Arduino Nano and interface it with PC/embedded computing boards through a USB port. Native GTK UI application provides to control all functions of the PT2322 IC.
The Arduino Nano can directly plugin to the PT2322 module. There are three push buttons on the panel itself to control the volume and mute the audio.
To reduce the cost and minimize the PCB size, we use both SMD and through-hole-type components in this PCB. The dimension of the PCB is 59mm × 60mm. The PCB of this module can directly order from the PCBWay project page. Using the PCBWay service, you can order high-quality PCBs at low prices. Use the PCBWay online quote tool for pricing and more details.
Tumblr media
The Arduino firmware in this project is developed using PlatformIO. The host-side control application is written using GCC C. This UI application can be compiled and run on any Linux/GTK compatible board like PCs, Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, BeagleBone Black, etc. All communication between the host and the module is performed through the USB UART interface provided by the Arduino Nano board.
Tumblr media
At the prototyping stage, we test this board using an ASUS Xonar SE 5.1 channel soundcard and Creative Inspire T6300 - 5.1 analog speaker system. The above setup delivers clean audio output without any noticeable distortion.
In PT2322, the tone control system applies to front-end channels only. The remaining channels work independently from the tone control system. This is a design limitation of the IC. From our experience, this can sometimes adversely affect the surrounding listening experience.
The PT2322 has a 3-way tone control system that allows bass, mid-range, and treble control over a range of -14dB to +14dB. A 6-channel attenuation system provides up to 15dB attenuation per channel. All these controls divide into 15 steps. The master volume control can use to adjust attenuation from 79dB to 0dB in 80 steps.
Tumblr media
This audio processing module is an open-source hardware project. All the design files, source codes, and compiled binaries are in the project repository at github.com.

My Orange Pi 5 arrived!
I originally bought it to enable me to make aarch64 VMs faster than with QEMU and overnight installations, but it occurred to me too late that I could just use my Oracle Cloud machine for that instead.
Anyways, I wanted to mess around with an ARM machine for quite a long time and the thing was coming anyways so why not. I somewhat regret being swayed by the extra performance and not getting something that was ARM system ready instead so I could try any distro/OS I wanted. The official images use a super weird custom kernel and bootloader (although I'm just not very familiar with boot process in ARM anyways, good opportunity to learn I guess) and it refuses to load normal aarch64 images.
I also failed to get the thing to output an image, but I didn't try very hard, it might have been the server Debian image I put on it or maybe something wonky with the HDMI cable and 4k display I tried. I ended up just connecting over SSH and playing through there (default user is root/orangepi).
The thing also won't recognize my NVMe SSD in an Orico enclosure in the USB 3 ports. I planned on putting most of the IO on that but the OPI5 doesn't even realize the thing is plugged in unless I plug it in the USB 2 port, which is dog slow. Since lsusb, dmesg and lsblk don't show anything at all I suspect the board might not be able to supply enough power to the SSD. I have been experimenting with NBD and iSCSI to give it some faster and more reliable storage than the SD card it boots from, it looks pretty promising.
When it comes to performance, the Rockchip RK3588 with 4xA76 and 4xA55s is pretty much identical to the quad core Neoverse N2 in my Oracle server in multithreading and gets torn apart in single threading. I have yet to try the GPU and probably won't ever find anything that actually uses the fancy NPU.
All in all, I think I should have gone for the Raspberry Pi 4 instead haha. But this still gives me a good excuse to go back to compiling custom Linux kernels, I heard that 6.4 might improve support for the OPI5 as well so I'm hyped.
