Chapter 1: Food Fight

Remy was sure that his god was trying to kill him. What with the dreams, the doors, the hallucinations, he was sure that all of this was just a cosmic prank on him in some form. Especially with what was probably his quest right now. Considering he was in a Denny's ordering crepes, well more like looking at the menu and the only option that wasn’t obscured was the crepes; why his god would want Denny's crepes, he had no idea, but here he was in dream form.

“Can I wake up now? Can’t really get you Denny’s if you don’t let me go!”

As usual, there was no reply, but Remy found himself waking up. In the middle of the night. Because of course he had to be awoken at this time to go get Denny’s for a god. (Although maybe he shouldn’t be too upset, he did ask to be released from his dreams after all, and this time it was rather quick instead of him staying there for another few hours, bored out of his mind or terrified). Although, the all too familiar headless figure standing a few yards away still creeped him out, sure he was used to it, but he’d rather it leave him alone. At least it was better than when he heard voices before bed. Sighing, he got out of the covers, and put on his most flamboyant outfit, the leather cropped jacket was a comfort at this point.

The trip to Denny’s was hardly horrible, but it wasn’t great with how groggy Remy was. He was just grateful that the bus system ran all night for some reason. Although he wouldn’t begin to decipher why, it was probably a mix of different gods’ sponsors creating something unique here in the past however long the bus system had been there. It was a little lonely, but he took comfort in the fact that if he stared ahead enough, the headless thing following him wasn’t able to do anything. Yet. He knew it probably could, considering his god, but only if he did the wrong thing enough times. Sometime he did talk to it, usually when he was feeling exceptionally alone, as there was no point otherwise. People feared him, some even thinking him the cause to their kids’ own madness or hallucinations. Which was completely rude, he had no control over that! And technically the gods only had minimal control over their domains. Some people were just more susceptible to those domains than others, which gave the gods greater access to mess with them. It was science 101, maybe 102; possibly theology. Still it was incredibly lonely being blamed for the sins of the world but asked for amazing dreams. Honestly, he was tempted to give nightmares for the next week to the next person who asked him for anything. It was getting tiring. Still, not like he blamed them, his god was terrifying. Mostly being inhuman in visits, and the human version was still terrifying, the eyes looked so off. I mean were they even trying? Or was it a form they took specifically so they could eat Denny’s?

Maybe Remy could be easier on his god, but maybe his god could be easier on him as well. Always communicating through doorways, this dream being one of the more cohesive ways Remy had figured out what they wanted. Not only that, but he’d yet to get a stable job, as just doing nothing in the city wasn’t going to get him enough copper to rent the apartment he was in for much longer. He was beginning to think having the god of wealth as a patron would be really rewarding.

Walking into Denny’s, Remy went up, and gave his most charming smile.

“Hello, welcome to Denny’s! We’ll seat you shortly!”

“Wonderful hun! Would you happen to be able to make mine to go. I’d love to enjoy the food here, but I’m on official business.”

“Of course, just tell the staff serving you once you’ve been seated, which will be shortly.”

“Thank you doll!”

“Of course, hope you enjoy the food sir!”

Empty platitudes aside, Remy sighed. At least he hadn’t been here long enough for too many rumors about him being connected to his god to go around. He might get weird looks by his temporary apartment, but out here, no one really knew who he was. And he’d like to keep it that way if possible.

Sitting down in his booth, he waited for the waitress to get to him.

“Hello and welcome to Denny’s! What can I get you tonight?”

“Just a little question,” Remy looked at the menu again, hoping he hadn’t forgotten anything from his dream, “do you do to-go orders?”

“Of course we do! What would you like to get?”

“Just some crepes, if you’d be so kind hun.”

“Of course! Anything else?”

“I’m good with just that.”

“Alright, that should be right out for you sir!”

Virgil was exhausted, yet for some reason, sleep wasn’t an option. His sister, Emile, was sleeping soundly in the room next to his. Yet he couldn’t seem to sleep. Not with the wind calling him like this. What did his god want in the middle of the night?

Following the gentle tug around his arms, he flew to Denny’s. His bat wings were equipped instead of his usual raven ones because it would be fitting for the night. He noticed as the tug was leading him towards a stranger exiting the restaurant, someone Virgil had never seen before. And oh, oh no. His god was not about to have him socialize at midnight. That was a horrible idea, who talks to strangers in the middle of the night. Except the tugging got stronger, and not wanting his feathers turned to stone which would cause his bat wings to be heavier, he followed. Thankfully, due to his mostly dark dress, the stranger hadn’t noticed him. Yet. Maybe if he was lucky, he’d just have to ask for the stranger’s name or maybe they had been praying to the god of wind for a good breeze or even a companion. And then Virgil could talk to the stranger and leave them well enough alone afterwards. Hopefully.

However, Virgil was never good at guessing what his god wanted. Not realizing the situation his god was putting him in, until he nearly accidentally wacked the stranger’s food out of their hands.

Thankfully whoever they were, they had pretty good reflexes for someone awake and exiting a Denny’s at midnight.

“Okay babes,” their voice dry and annoyed. “I’m going to believe that was an accident, and that you didn’t just try to purposefully knock this food out of my hands. Because if you did, then we’re gonna have a problem. And trust me hun, you do not want to have a problem with me.”

Normally in a situation like this, Virgil could just turn and leave. However, the wind around them was tugging him more and more. For some reason his god wanted him to mess with whoever this was for whatever reason. So gritting his nerves, he prepared to probably ruin this person's night.

He reached for the food again, twisting the wind to his advantage. Preferring to look like a bully than getting his wings turned to stone. Oh how he wished it had been the stranger who picked a fight and not him, simply because he would have had something to say. And also because he wouldn’t feel as bad. No sooner than the to-go box had left the stranger’s hands had Virgil started seeing things. And he’d really really wished he knew how to kill a god. Specifically his god.

Shapes, and figures danced across his vision, making him paranoid, and it did not help that he heard footsteps rushing up behind him. Although those were all too real.

“OH MY GOD!!! Virgil what happened?” His sister asked, looking between him and the stranger; his sister who was not supposed to be there.

“Huh?” Was all he managed to get out.

“Alright babes!” The stranger shouted over the other voices staring at the both of them suspiciously. “I don’t care what god told you to try and ruin my night. But one of you is repaying for that meal or I’m asking my god to keep this effect on you forever. And trust me hun, my god is not fun when angered.”

Virgil watched as his sister sighed softly, nodding at what the stranger said.

“How much was it? Also apologies. I think this is the fifth time this week his god has made him do something so reckless.”

“Thirty should cover it hun. And you don’t have to apologize, you’re not the one who wrecked my god’s want of Denny’s.”

“Why Denny’s?”

Virgil really wished his sister would at least pay more attention to the fact that he couldn’t talk for some reason. Yet again, here she was, chatting it up with a stranger. If he hadn’t seen her way with nature and healing he probably would guess she was sponsored by the god of peace or something. But nope! Emile was just really friendly.

What absolutely did not help the situation was the way the wind solidified against him, and started cackling in his ear; he didn’t care how light and breezy it was, his god did not just get to laugh at him.

“Oh my,” they whispered, “you really got what was coming to you.”

Perhaps if Virgil banged his head in the parking lot he’d stop hearing his god’s laughter in his ears. And maybe he wouldn’t see this stupid headless figure while he was at it. Sadly he missed the exchange of money from this stranger and his sister, but he did notice when the headless figure went away.

He heard Emile’s sigh and rolled his eyes, proceeding to lay down on his back only to immediately get up because someone could viably run him over like that.

“Why are you up?”

“Because you are lucky enough to have a sister who notices when you open the window.” Emile huffed. “Now, you owe me thirty bucks. In some form at some time. Come on. Maybe we can get a little sleep before the sun rises. Also you’ve got some crepe in your hair.”

so this is set in s3, sometime after 102. (possibly an au... who's to say!!) as such, warning for references to jon's kidnapping in 101, and scenes of people think they might be taken/killed/etc.

17. Needing to kiss to hide from bad guys

" Here, " Jon whispers in a panic in Martin's ear, and pulls him abruptly towards a shadowy spot in an alley. Martin goes along immediately, pressing towards the wall while also trying to push himself in front of Jon. Jon's breathing is sharp and frantic, his hand tight where it's clutching at Martin's arm, and the footsteps of their pursuers are still echoing slowly down the street. 

This was meant to be a work trip—or whatever passes for that these days. Another attempt to locate the ritual site for the Unknowing. Elias had suggested Jon go, and Martin hadn't wanted him to go alone. That's the last thing Jon needs, after everything, after being held captive for a month… Martin hadn't been willing to risk it, the possibility of Jon being taken again. 

It wasn't supposed to be dangerous, Elias had said. Just a simple scouting, it probably wasn't the site in the first place, the Stranger might not even be there, surely the fact that Jon had escaped so easily meant they wouldn't come after him again… 

This is clearly not true. They'd been spotted, inside the warehouse where they'd been searching. Martin can remember the moment with a shocking clarity: Jon's sharp intake of breath as he'd reached out to grab Martin's arm, his nails digging frantically into Martin's skin, the slow way Martin had looked up and seen it. Them. Things that looked wrong, inhuman, in a way that Martin can't even describe.

They've come after them. Followed them out of the warehouse, onto the street, and of course no one is around to see them, and Martin knows they should've gone for the rental car, should've immediately gone for the rental car, but they'd taken some wrong turns, frantic to get away from the blank-faced figures (the cheery voice calling for the Archivist and asking about his skin, and Martin is going to throw up). And now they're here, hiding in some alley while these things pretending to be human are searching for them, coming for Jon all over again. 

Jon's breathing has gone shaky. He's pulling at Martin's arm like they can get any further into the wall. Martin's got an arm in front of Jon, like they're in a car about to crash, and he's staring out at the alley, waiting for those things to catch up, and he says the first thing he can think of, in a whisper: "I-I won't let them take you again." 

Jon's breathing goes tighter somehow. "Martin, you can't… "

"I'm not going to let them take you, Jon!" Martin hisses, his voice pitching too high for a moment. Jon squeezes his arm frantically and he backtracks, quieter: " Sorry, sorry, it's just… I'm not letting that happen to you again!"

"They'd kill you," Jon whispers. "They wouldn't hesitate , Martin, and I am not… I am not losing anyone else!"

The footsteps echo closer; the echoing sing-song-y voice comes again, calling for Jon. Panic slices through Martin like a knife and he presses closer, as if physically shielding Jon will do a damn thing. (Maybe it will. You never know; maybe it will.) "W-we should run for the car," he says. (Although at the moment he has absolutely no idea where they parked it.)

"We'll never make it," Jon murmurs. Martin turns a little in time to see Jon, who's staring off into the distance with wide, haunted eyes. "We need to hide. " 

Martin looks back towards the street, at the approaching shadows. "I'll distract them," he says—one last ditch effort to at least get Jon to safety. "A-and you run."

"What? No. Martin." Jon's voice is pressing now; his hand slips from Martin's arm down to Martin's hand, intertwining their fingers. Martin looks back, startled, and finds Jon staring at him nervously. "Martin, do you trust me?" he says, voice wavering. 

Martin blinks a few rapid times. "Wh-what?" he says, caught off guard; he holds tighter to Jon's hand, suddenly worried that Jon is going to run out and distract them so Martin won't have to. 

Jon exhales frustratedly. "It's just that… I have an idea of how we could hide, and i-it's a little unusual, and stupid, a-and so I wanted your… to make sure you are all right with it first…"

The voice is getting closer. Panic snaps through Martin, and he hisses frantically, "Yes, whatever, it's fine, j-just do it before…" 

Jon lets go of Martin's hand and moves, in a flash, to cup the side of his face, both hands, and Martin only has a moment to wonder what the hell is going on before Jon rises on tiptoes, pulls Martin down a bit, and kisses him. 

Martin's brain shorts out for a moment—stuck between the marvel of him kissing Jon, Jon kissing him—and the panic of the fact that they're being chased by mannequin-things that will probably skin them. He makes a muffled, startled sound into Jon's mouth. Jon's hands are trembling on his face. 

Then the pieces start to slide together—Jon's doing that movie bit, where you kiss to hide from the bad guys. Quite possibly ridiculous, but it's something, something more than one of them being bait. (And to be entirely ridiculous for a moment… if they're both about to die, Martin's glad he's gotten to kiss Jon before he's done it.) So Martin plays along. He leans down and turns them a bit, so Jon's in the corner between the Dumpster and the wall, and his back is blocking the both of them from view; he'll look more inconspicuous than Jon will. 

And then he kisses Jon back. Tentatively, at first (just because you kiss someone to hide from monsters or whatever doesn't mean you actually want to kiss them), and then a little deeper. The way he's wanted to kiss Jon this whole time, as long as he's ever thought about it. He brings a hand to Jon's face, too, thinking to hide it from the Stranger. Pushes a little bit of hair behind Jon's ear. Jon leans into the touch; his right thumb moves, slowly, over Martin's cheek, and Martin has to hold back something that might be a sob. He leans closer, their foreheads almost touching, trying to focus on the fact that there are things trying to kill them, and not just on the fast that he is kissing Jon… 

Jon breaks away abruptly. Pulls back just far enough that their mouths aren't touching anymore—his hands still on Martin's face—and says, "I… Martin, I-I think they're gone now." He is breathing hard, his eyes darting over Martin's shoulder and then back. 

Martin is probably breathing hard too. He is drawing a blank; his hand is still in Jon's hair. "They're… they're gone?" he says, still in a whisper. His voice is shaking, he thinks. 

"Yes… yes, they're gone now." Jon looks right at him, his dark eyes huge in the dim light of the alley. "Martin… Martin, I am so… " 

"Car," says Martin. It is the first word he comes up with—they need to go, there are still things trying to kill them, and they can't just stand around talking when… He grabs Jon's hand where it's lowering, somewhere around his neck, and squeezes urgently. "Jon, car, we need to go… "

" Christ, I forgot, I…" Jon shakes his head hard and moves with Martin towards the opposite end of the alley. He doesn't let go of Martin's hand, all the way to the car, where they've left it two blocks away. Martin climbs immediately in the driver's seat, and turns the key, and drives off without hesitation, too fast to even buckle his seatbelt. 

There is silence in the car for a moment, as they drive away. Martin grips the wheel hard and stares straight out of the front window, unsure of what the hell to say. (Unsure whether to say Thank you for coming up with a plan to save our lives, or You just kissed me in an alley, maybe we should talk about this? or I've been in love with you for about a year now, and I guess you beat me to the punch, except I don't know if you actually MEANT it. ) But in the end, it's Jon who breaks the silence—to say, in a tight, rigid voice, "Martin, I am so sorry."

Martin's hands actually tighten around the wheel somehow. "Wh-what?" he says, uncertain. "What do you mean… Jon, you saved us."

"Th-that was entirely unprofessional, I… I shouldn't have kissed you like that, I just… I-I was afraid they'd find us, and it was all I could think of, and I just…" Jon's blushing. Martin can see it out of the corner of his eye. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that."

Martin takes a shaky breath. He must be blushing, too, he thinks; his face and neck feel like they're on fire. He says, "You don't have to be sorry," just as Jon says, "I-I didn't want to go back." Martin's mouth shuts like a trap as Jon keeps talking: "I… if I went back, I think they would have… and I didn't want… and I thought if they took you… th-they would've killed you, Martin, and I wouldn't… I didn't…"

"It's okay , Jon," Martin blurts, and as soon as he says it, he finds he means it. "It is. I… I was scared, too."

"I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have brought you, Martin, I should've left you at home…"

"Did you forget the part where I insisted on coming?" Martin laughs a little. "I… I'm glad you weren't here alone, Jon. I didn't want them to take you again. I…" He swallows hard, stares out at the road in front of him. One of his hands falls away from the wheel, towards the center console. "Please don't say you wish I hadn't been here. Please."

Jon's quiet for a moment. The only sound is the tires chewing up the road beneath them, before he finally says, "Still. I-I never should have kissed you, Martin. I am so… "

"Jon, you don't… y-you don't need to apologize, okay? You don't, " says Martin. "It's okay, it's fine, it was… I-I didn't mind, all right? You don't need to apologize."

"I… I should have clarified. I didn't really ask before I…"

" Jon. Please, it's okay. " Martin reaches for something else to say, and all he can come up with is: "I have had much worse kisses, okay? Much worse."

Jon laughs, a laugh sharp with surprise. After a moment, Martin laughs, too. This whole night has been so absurd. They were chased by some mannequins or whatever, they had to run for their lives, and Jon kissed him, and he kissed Jon, and they're alive. It's pretty hilarious, if you think about it for more than five minutes. It's about as absurd as anything else they've been through in the past year. He'd take this all over being trapped by worms. 

"I… I have, too, actually," says Jon, finally, after they've stopped laughing. " Much worse. You're not…" He stops, makes a strangled noise like he's embarrassed or something, before going on. "Th-thank you, Martin. Really."

Martin chews at his lower lip. "Thank you, " he says. "For… for getting us out of there." 

Jon takes a shaky breath. His fingers brush over Martin's free hand, where it's resting over the center console; Martin tenses all over, automatically, but Jon doesn't take it. Just brushes his fingers there. Martin thinks of Jon's expression before he leaned up to kiss him, Jon's fingers against his cheeks. 

"I… I should've left you at home," Jon says, almost reluctantly. "But I'm… glad you came with me, Martin. I'm glad you're with me."

Martin swallows hard. Bites back a small smile. He'd meant it, when he kissed Jon back; he wishes he could tell Jon he meant it. (He could, he supposes. Nothing stopping him. He wonders what Jon would say back.) 

But what he says is, "I am, too," because it's a sort of a confession, and he means it, too, as much as the kiss. Even with the almost dying, with all of it, he's glad, somehow, he was here. 

Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Jon smile, just a little. Martin smiles, too.

Even though I'm much better today than I was the past few days after the second vaccine, it's still considered a rest day. But why does it feel like I'm lazy and it's just an excuse?

Just kidding, I definitely know why. I was going to drive Spider to her vaccine appt the day after mine, and my parents told me not to drive the next day because of my low grade fever 99 F. I laughed like what are you talking about, you regularly forced me to go to school, extracurriculars, other obligations when I was 102 103 F as a kid! (The fever did go higher later that evening to 101 F, but I recovered by morning and was able to drive her no problem.)

But it clicked for me - I only labeled today as a rest day because I knew the immediate cause (vaccine) of my physical state, and in reality I have pushed myself while feeling worse through normal days! So my brain makes the connection "not as bad as that last time, when you were still functional and working - why are you laying in bed?". Which isn't entirely fair, and also means I might need to give myself more rest in general.

Every time I say I'm resting, I feel like I'm lying. It feels like lying because I'm not incapacitated, and I could do more, but I'm choosing not to, which to my credit I've been much better about lately. 100% is when all the stars align and you rock one day, and you can't expect yourself to do that all the time. It should not have to be an emergency to rest - it should be routine.

Every time I say I'm feeling weak, or rough, I feel like I'm lying. Because I'm so used to pushing any physical ailments aside it feels like it should be negligible, but it's catching up with me and I just want time off of obligations and work and life, right now.

Every time I think to myself I need help and support, I feel like I'm lying - because I've done a lot of things on my own and can function independently even through hardship, I feel like I don't need it. I think about obligations and things other people have to do, and I center the narrative around not bothering then as a convenient way to avoid my own vulnerability.

But I'm really not! I'm not lying at all. I feel little bursts or sparks go off in my head intermittently throughout the day that make me feel dizzy. I've had a low headache all day. I've been tired a lot, moreso than usual. I'm definitely feeling weak, and if I hadn't been resting it might've gotten worse.

It's been less than a week since my grandmother died, and why am I kicking myself for being out of it?? Even people I hold in contempt, I wouldn't hold to that standard. I feel disenfranchised from grief. Because my vaccine was on Thursday, I planned to not get any work done Thurs/Fri in case I was in recovery (which turned out to be a good thing). Because she then died, I couldn't get my head in the game and wound up having to put all of 7-10 days of work (that I'd usually have a full week to do) into a rushed and panicked day and a half. I slept two hours before my vaccine appt! And then, I spent all the days after that in high feverish dreams and aches, and I'm still recovering. And I haven't had time to be not okay.

But I took all the help that was offered on that day. I didn't need it, but I also wasn't lying when I knew it'd go a long way and accepted it. Spider came over to keep me company so I could get through my work emails. Yeah, I found out during my work shift and then didn't take any leave because I was already taking the day off for the vaccine!! What the fuck, Ari? I should've just taken the day off. Sarah came over and brought me Starbucks, and also helped with packing by doing the tedious part that I always dread and spend the most amount of time on. Ally came afterwards for dinner. And then, they left. And I said yes to everything that they offered that day because I wanted to say no. And it was the only thing that barely held the first half of the week together. And it wasn't dishonest or lying to accept that help.

This post doesn't really have a point. I just haven't had time to process the last week at all. And doing this, as usual, helps. It was supposed to be two paragraphs max about how I'm being good and letting myself rest today when normally I'd push myself past it but I had a lot more on my mind, evidently. I'm a little worried about the week yet to come and absolutely dreading work, but life goes on regardless - no break from that.

Everything wrong with ACOFAS: A Rant Part Three

These page numbers come from the UK paperback edition of A Court of Frost and Starlight. This is my own opinion of the book - the writing, the grammar, the characters, etc. I won’t be commenting on anything that may have been plagiarized or that has been ripped off from the history of other cultures as SJM has a tendency to do. If you disagree with my opinions, I’m sorry and hope you see the error in your ways.

Page 99: Saying ‘wine will make you feel better’ really gives off the wrong impression when this is a book targeted at young kids. I mean, it’s written for the YA genre which is typically categorized for ages 12 and up. 

Page 101: I’m so fed up of people talking badly about Nesta. Having Amren say ‘That’s if she shows up sober’ when she has walked in to see Feyre, Cassian and Azriel all drinking wine? Feyre and Cassian being ‘drunk’? Double standard! Unfair! 

Page 102: So Elain managed to become a seer with the cauldron, right? So… Are there other people - sorry, Fae - who are seers? Why does the cauldron affect people in different ways? 

Page 107: Amren was turned into a High Fae in the last book, which means that she no longer has to drink blood as food. But why did she ever have to drink blood? I don’t think it was ever explained. Why?

Page 108: Elain asks Amren if she could have taken on a male form and Amren replies with ‘Before, in my other form, I was neither. I simply was.’ Was that supposed to be SJM’s cheap shot at adding some gender diversity? Because I would have loved to see Amren be this non-binary power house asexual dragon but who has time for that but she uses she/her pronouns throughout the entire series and this is the only mention of her being able to switch between genders. 

Page 112: ‘…A few drunk revelers spotted us and fell silent. Felt Rhys’s power, perhaps my own as well, and found somewhere else to be for a while.’ Why would they want to find somewhere else to be as soon as their High Lord and High Lady show up? Why are they showing fear at the feeling of their power? Aren’t Feyre and Rhys supposed to be the good guys? This reads a lot like the people of Velaris are scared of them…

Page 115: ‘Gentlemales’ GENTLEMALES. GENTLEMALES. GENTLE FUCKING MALES?!?!?!?!

Page 116: ‘Indeed, some people were turning our way.’ This is just… This word is useless in general but in this book? I don’t think it was edited properly. 

Page 118: ‘A scene. This was about to become a scene in the worst way.’ SJM does this quite a lot in this book. These little two sentences where she says something and then expands on that something. It was used twice before already and I didn’t write it down because I thought it was just a writing choice but… it’s a poor one. It feels like a way to get the word count up somehow and, quite frankly, it’s bad writing.

  Page 118: Feyre is annoyed that Nesta is asking for her to pay her rent? How else does she suppose that Nesta should pay for her rent? She had a home that was taken from her back in the human world (that was taken from her because of Feyre, mind you) and all she asks is that Feyre pay her rent because she doesn’t have a job in fairy land? That seems pretty reasonable. Feyre shouldn’t be mad. 

Page 121: ‘But those were her deaths to claim.’ Why does everything have to be paid with death? I think it would be a lot more empowering if Mor would meet with those who wronged her, say something about them and her and just walk out of their lives entirely? SJM should start preaching forgiveness a little bit more but, hey, that’s just my opinion. Plus, this is really making Rhys seem like a bad ruler. Wanting to kill his enemies? No. 

Page 122: ‘Keir is coming soon, isn’t he.’ Yeah, no, this wasn’t edited. 

Page 122: ‘When.’ 

Page 125: ‘Az has a list of kingdoms most likely to cross the line.’ I’m wondering why the Night Court is in charge? Why does Rhysand get to decide which kingdoms and courts cross the line? Why does he get to decide where the line is? 

Page 126: As I said for Page 118, Rhysand says: ‘Tempting. So damn tempting to tell…’ See what I mean? 

Page 126: If Rhysand deals with conflict by fighting fire with fire, then his court is going to fall apart. Why is he allowed to get away with attacking Tamlin the way he did? What are the basic rules of the court - any of the courts? Surely the people wouldn’t want an insufficient ruler so do they get a say in it? WHY ARE THE HIGH LORDS ALLOWED TO ACT LIKE BLOODTHIRSTY BEASTS?! 

Page 126: ‘Too long. She’d been cooped up within the borders of this court for too long.’ Wow, once you tune into it…

Page 127: I really want to make one thing clear. Not every piece of dialogue has to have a tag attached to it. Sometimes things work much better if you just use ‘I said’ or ‘he/she/they said.’ At least then it would mean less lines such as this ‘I laughed again. ‘Certainly not Amren. Not if we want peace,’ I added.’

Page 127: Also, Rhysand ‘want(s) peace’? Bullshit. Not seven paragraphs ago did he laugh about Mor wanting Tamlin dead and a page ago he was tempted to tell ‘the High Lord of Autumn that his eldest son coveted his throne.’ Do not think for one second that Rhys is a level headed ruler. SJM has a tendency to tell us that he is rather than show it. 

Page 128: ‘…Even the wine I’d returned home to drink couldn’t dull.’ Teaching young, impressionable people that alcohol might solve some of your problems. Great. And what - Feyre can say this but Nesta can’t drink? 

Page 129: ‘Decadent - it felt decadent…’ I really wished I had never picked up on this.

Page 129: Feyre keeps complaining about the amount of work she has to do but here she is shopping with Elain? When her people are scared, heartbroken, without a home and in mourning after the war?

  Page 129: ‘So different. This place was so different…’ ON THE SAME FUCKING PAGE?!??!

Page 131: So I guess that nobody ever told SJM that a character description goes beyond eye colour, hair colour and clothes? 

Page 133: ‘I might ease that grief, make the pain less.’ Feyre’s powers allow her to do that? When, why, how and fucking what?

Page 134: ‘I was lucky - so tremendously lucky.’ 

Page 134: Rhys was dead and he was brought back to life, right? It wasn’t like with Feyre’s death where she was still slightly conscious because she could hear what was going on, no. No, with Rhysand’s death, he really was dead. But he was brought back to life and somehow… feels nothing from this? I would love to see if there are times where his body becomes slightly misty and ghostlike, if his veins turn black under his skin because they had stopped working during that brief moment of death. I would have loved to see something other than just him feeling a little bit tired!

Page 134: ‘How.’ 

Page 135: I’s very clear to me that, for whatever reason, SJM wanted Feyre to be able to paint but she has no idea how to write about it. Whilst Feyre is painting, we only read about her need to create and what the end result looks like. Even during her process we hear nothing about light and perspective and I’m not a painter but there’s a true science behind it. And where is she getting the paints from? Rhys was able to give her some with his magic but from where?

  Page 138: It disgusts me that Feyre thinks that she can solve the people of the Night Court’s problems by teaching them how to paint. These people went through a war! And before that it was Under the Mountain! Painting and creating art in general can help with recovery from mental illness and trauma and PTSD and depression and everything else, but there comes a point where therapy is needed. Memorials are needed, ceremonies are needed. How are people supposed to paint what they feel when they can’t understand what they feel? It’s bullshit and, really, quite a childish thing to even suggest. How is this a ruler? 

Page 139: Why do jigsaw puzzles exist. Why are they called jigsaw puzzles. SJM is not a high fantasy writer. 

Page 140: ‘Good thing indeed.’ You guys know how I feel about this word by now, right? 

Page 140: ‘Indeed, each seemed like a different decade.’ So the fashion changes with time, does it? Great! Tell me more. Tell me why and how and when. Also, indeed.

Page 143: ‘The females bring their jewellery. I bring my weapons.’ But Cassian is a feminist, right? Yeah, no, guys, it’s alright. He’s a feminist, it’s all fine. 

Page 146: ‘You being too drunk to climb the stairs last night.’ I’m really not okay with the amount of casual drinking in this book - and not only that but the way it’s treated. Nesta is shamed for it, Feyre mentions that even wine can’t help her, Rhys makes jokes about his friends being drunk. It sends a really bad message. 

Page 147: ‘Illyrian baby indeed.’ 

Page 147: I’ve said this before but someone should really tell SJM that every scene in a book should further the plot. This has been three pages of bickering, useless drivel about a bed being too small for Cassian and cheap jokes about alcohol. The entire thing could be cut and the story wouldn’t change. 

Page 148: ‘Indeed, as Feyre emerged from the kitchen hallway…’

Page 148: ‘Strange - so strange to see…’

Page 149: ‘Indeed.’

Page 150: ‘Mor was instantly on her feet, offering - insisting on wine.’ This is just teaching kids that you need alcohol to be able to have a good time! Which isn’t true in the slightest! And it’s wrong on so many levels - especially insisting that everyone has wine! Peer pressure?? SJM deals with sensitive issues so badly (see what I said in another post about Rhysand and sexual assault) that it’s… It’s hard. Yikes.
