Cafe au where sqh is the owner of a bookcafe after he finally gets all the money he was owe in loyalties with the help of sy's lawyer. Now that he has a stable income, he comes to his cafe to write his novel.
Mbj is a regular at the cafe only because the cute boy is always working there. He's a director at Northern Desert Co. And is set to take over after his father. He started coming to Melon Seed and Read Cafe because it was the closest to the company.
They started talking one day after sqh spilled coffee on him, and the whole time, mbj was nitpicking things about the Cafe that could be improved and he gets pleasantly surprised when the things he complains about get fixed soon after. Similar sqh complains about the workers from northern desert being mean to the workers and other customers, then suddenly they came in to apologize for their behavior.
The reveal that mbj is the heir to Northern Desert and sqh is the bookcafe owner would be epic. Like Northern Desert wants to work with local stores, including sqhs, to advertise some of their product. Sqh goes to the meeting and sees mbj there. They both freeze and realize that they have been talking shit about the company/cafe to the owner. The meeting is awkward, but sqh accepts the deal after his lawyer reviews it.
Mbj stopped coming to the cafe, and sqh thinks that it was because of what he's been saying about Northern Desert. When he finally comes back, sqh avoided him because it's clearly what mbj wants. Until one day, mbj pretends to walk into sqh spilling his coffee on sqh.
Being the gentleman he is, mbj offers sqh a change of clothes, and his apartment isn't too far from here, so they can go get it. What do you think happened when sqh gets to his apartment? 😏

Sometimes I feel like people failed US History and this recent election and talks about tariffs really do prove that. I mean did literally everyone collectively forget about the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act and those major repercussions? Btw that act happened in 1930. There's a reason President Hoover's name was used to refer to Shanty Towns in the Great Depression. Or the fact that almost all tariff acts within the last 80 or so years have either been expanding negotiation for world trade or deliberately decreasing tariffs. And the one time in 2002 where steel had tariffs placed on it, it was repealed in under a year because the cost greatly outweighed any benefits.
Does anyone remember the last time Trump tried to make tariffs in 2018? How many people credit it to be one of the largest tax increases in US history!?
Are people really that stupid? Like it's literally a REQUIRED part of our general education. Why do you think it is!? So people can actually make smart decisions.
#us elections#us politics#economy#tariffs#us history#istg these people must have failed it#“make america great again!” the last time we had tariffs the great depression happened you idiot#ughhhhhh#like genuinely wtf#and people are complaining about no christmas bonus#and im like did you even read your us history textbook#this has literally happened every time#when will you learn!#when will you learn that your actions have consequences!#literally the only time really tariffs worked was when america was first being made#and then we got just regular taxes#like do i need to hit yall over the head with a textboook#screams incoherently#bruh and i hate the electoral college#but this makes me think Hamilton had a point#like why tf are we letting people who didnt know anything about economy and us history vote for the future of our economy#im like do some research#its not that hard

What are good books about explorers, if I may ask? I'd love to get into some harrowing survival (or just trying to survive) stories.
HI ok these are all heroic age antarctica-centric bc that's all i've had rattling around in my brain for a solid year and a half now so if anyone has non-polar recs pls feel free to throw em in the replies lmao
if we're talking harrowing survival there's nothing more fucked than shackleton's trans-imperial expedition aka endurance and the ross sea party. the classic here is endurance by alfred lansing (and ofc south by ol ernie shackles but i feel like his own account is less approachable to a first time reader) but i also highly recommend the lost men by kelly tyler-lewis for the ross sea party half of the story that often falls to the wayside.
and we can't talk abt shackleton without getting into scott & the terra nova & the race for the pole which WILL take over ur life if u get into it lol. the worst journey in the world by apsley cherry-garrard is required reading (and so is cherry by sara wheeler, possibly my fave biography of all time), and for a more general overview a first-rate tragedy by diana preston is the absolute gold standard. for amundsen ask @roaldamundsen there's the last viking by stephen r. brown which i haven't read yet but i've heard v good things about (nb: u may be recommended roland huntford's books when it comes to amundsen. read them if u want but he's got a Thing against scott which in turn distorts how he approaches amundsen but then again every polar biographer wants to make tender romantic love to their special little guy so)
OH and we can't forget the northern party aka six guys in a hole (NOT sexy) (well–). there are banger first-hand accounts (especially raymond priestley's) but weirdly enough my fave when it comes to this part of the terra nova story is a polar affair by lloyd spencer-davis, which is technically abt the sex lives of adélie penguins. it was the first book i read connected to terra nova and although it leans more popular history than rigorous biography or historical analysis it rly primes u to understand the fricative relationship between the expedition's two intertwined objectives – scientific advancement and imperialist glory – that were the root of most of their issues.
outside of endurance & terra nova i'd be remiss not to rec The gateway book to antarctic history, the madhouse at the end of the earth by julian sancton. i should have put this first bc this is genuinely one of my fave books of all time, polar-related or otherwise. it's a comedy it's a tragedy it's an adventure it's an insight into colonial ambition (although imo this aspect could have been pushed further) it's a romance for two specific guys it could easily be a musical it might be adapted into a tv show or movie in the near future?? it's an absolute trip i rec it to anyone who stands still enough to let me shove a copy in their hands. read madhouse NOW
finally i want to give a shout out to the australasian antarctic expedition which in comparison is less insane than everything else here but it's entirely possible the guy who was once on the australian $100 note ate his dog handler. so like. read alone on the ice by david roberts
(ps. for more boat books see @jesslovesboats's banger posts ✌️⛵️)
#replies.txt#maxer-blaster#ok theres more to alone on the ice than possible cannibal douglas mawson but u have to admit its compelling#also!! i havent read either book yet but the two main ones abt the karluk/wrangel island saga (empire of ice & stone and the ice master)#are v v well regarded and have similar vibes to everything else here even tho it's at the other pole#anyway lmk if u want more recs!! these are just the rly popular/well known ones theres sooo much more to antarctic history#like the scottish expedition!! the japanese one!! BANZARE!!!! and whatever the fuck argentina & chile were doing when they sent#those pregnant women to give birth at research stations for sovereignty claims!!!!#actually if ur interested in that aspect there's a textbook edited by peder roberts & alejandra mancilla called colonialism and antarctica#which. as the title suggests. has a whole bunch of essays abt colonialism and antarctica#something that pop history doesnt often focus on and is still impacting how we interact w the continent today#i have a thesis idea percolating in the back of my mind abt official polar narratives & imperialism & modern writing + tourism#but im doing an entirely different masters rn i dont have time for all that. yet

hi!!! all the fic updates/uploads recently have me bouncing off the walls i am so appreciative of all of them!!!! i just hope the procrastination doesn’t have terrible consequences, for your sake
I have this for you!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/63fbd4b5eb4acbf9acd36ed13c9c3ec8/742f9cc34102401c-f2/s540x810/f37e51780c5546b5f3e661fa5dee6d7b8805a1dc.jpg)
your dialogue is always so so entertaining i had to do something with it at least once!!! look i know it says slightly manic in the fic but i couldn’t help myself. idk maybe it is only slightly manic. he’s normal. a secret third thing. i’ll leave that judgement in your hands! :D
DUDE. dude. you genuinely have no idea what this did for me. this is exactly precisely the morale boost i needed because i in fact right now at this moment am trying to teach myself all of family law in one night. it's going bad. those are the terrible consequences you referred to
in all sincerity thank you so so much, for this fucking hilarious and incredible drawing (holy shit) but ALSO for your extremely kind words and i am so happy if you've been having fun with my fic :D but ALSO. for this drawing. im in tears. this is the perfect comic. ren startling in the background. goro's manic face. this is the correct level of mania. im feeling it right now. i will never be able to express my gratitude to you
(context this is a scene from my akeshu australian law school au yes you read that correctly)
#i literally got this ask at my lowest point this evening i was like ohhhhh woe is me everything doesnt matter forever the horrors the agonie#s the fucking tragedies i am enduring (had to read legislation for a little while)#and then got this like a god damn. fuckin uhhh. it's like in jrpgs when the protagonist is on the floor and then gets a second wind#from the power of friendship#but the power of friendship is goro akechi with contract law textbooks in the most charming artstyle imaginable#im so appreciative. i am so humbled#thank you so so much#also i got your other message and i will not post it publicly as requested but i want to keep it in my inbox so i cant respond to it#but thank you so fucking much for that also#crying real tears#asks#rookfic#is for me

@earlgrey--tea you asked who learned French just by watching TV shows and I'm thrilled you asked.
Here is the paper Peter Llewellyn Foley published: Picking up a second language from television: an autoethnographic L2 simulation of L1 French learning. Looking over the paper again now, he did 1500 hours of audio-visual French material for native speakers. He read toward the end of that period for some hundreds of hours, and he talked to people in French similarly toward the end of that period for some hundreds of hours. I read the whole thing, and I recommend anyone else who's curious reads the whole thing. Because my takeaways may not be the same as another person's. The paper includes what he did, how he studied, how he tracked his study, what study materials worked best (he found children's cartoons with a lot of visuals of what is being talked about were the easiest to learn from in the first few hundred hours - and adult television where they talk about things not directly visually shown as some of the hardest stuff that he used once he had more understanding of the language).
His paper shows at least 1 person could learn French by watching shows (with children's cartoons being best at the beginning stage until you learn more words), and trying to figure out what each thing means as you hear it. He did a lot of puzzling out the sounds he heard, using context and guessing what was being talked about (for curiosity's sake he did the opposite of what ALG Automatic Language Growth articles tend to suggest people do). He did not do any reading later sometime after 1000 hours, and it's fascinating how different he imagined French spelling was based on his guesses from the sound, compared to how it is actually spelled. He did use some graded readers for learners once he was reading.
He did not look any word translations up when watching all those shows. He personally makes the guess that if he HAD looked up words, if he HAD used French subtitles, and if he had focused entirely on children's shows at first, his progress might have taken less time. But his experiment did not do that, so it's only a guess, and actual success of people who've looked up words should be referenced instead for how successful or not it is (people like r/Refold learners look up words while watching shows), and he did not use any video materials made for language learners but my personal thinking is that Comprehensible Input type lessons at the beginning stage may have worked even better than children's cartoons.
To me, his level of understanding and ability to do things lines up fairly well with Dreaming Spanish's roadmap estimated hours to do X things. That makes sense to me as Peter basically studied with stuff made for native speakers, which eventually became more comprehensible. And Dreaming Spanish is designed to be fully comprehensible to a learner, until they can comprehend stuff for native speakers. I imagine Peter had a harder time initially, but as an English speaker learning French, with all the cognates, maybe he didn't have to learn as much to cross the threshold into comprehending children's shows as someone learning a language with no cognates.
I wrote my in depth thoughts about his paper here but it's mostly just rambling.
#rant#earlgrey--tea#replies#i think of Peter's paper whenever i wonder how many hours i need to study#cause i figure okay i'll make SOME progress in 1500-2000 hours#possibly less#but if i havent studied at least that long. no matter what method im studying. i need to temper my expectations to be below B2#i also think he's a wonderful case of if you can learn from purely material for native speakers and doing NO word lookups/no study in your#native language#there are certainly ways of studying in ONLY the target language which hold your hand MORE than what Peter did#(comprehensible input lessons. the nature method textbooks.)#and there are things a person can do to make what Peter did EASIER (like studying 2000 common words in flashcards/anki then looking up#new target language words in reading and shows in a target language dictionary)#(or using target language subtitles from the start like Peter theorizes may have helped more - although there's argument that could've#worsened his listening skills)

The weirdest thing about going to college for teaching in the united states is the giant CANYON of disconnect between what we're taught and what we actually do in a classroom.
like we're taught how to diversify methods of instruction in order to most equitably reach the diverse populations of our classrooms and inspire them to do their best writing/reading/speaking (im an English teaching major) but then in reality the students in your classroom are insanely below the level they need to be at in order to engage with age-appropriate lessons for them
we're taught how to take common core standards and transform them into meaningful and deep lessons but we're only given 45-90 mins of planning per day (if we're lucky) and the rest needs to be done outside of school or after hours if you can't do it quickly enough, and teachers are always expected to do research outside of the classroom, as well as collaboration, tweaking of lesson plans, etc.
we're told that students crave learning and they crave fun projects and they crave kinesthetic exercises, but then when I try those things in the classroom everyone complains and halfasses their participation, and im lucky if half of them actually pass something in, whether its an assignment, a test, a project, or an assessment.
we're told that we need to have open communication not only between teachers but between teachers and admin and parents, but then im lucky if one of the ten parents I email about their kid failing emails me back, and im luckier if admin takes a behaviorally disturbed student out of my class for insulting me or other students.
like... i guess my point is that teaching education is so idyllic and utopian, and actual classrooms are a goddamn nightmare of behavioral issues, lack of time/resources, exhausting interactions with students who don't want to be there or participate, and insane expectations from students, parents, and admin alike.
Like... no wonder the teaching field is hemorrhaging teachers right now. How can ANYONE work under the insane conditions we're forced to try and teach in. I'm so tired and I'm not even out of school yet. It's actually psychotic.
#education#teaching#english teaching#teaching issues#education issues#new hampshire education#ive had students verbally abuse me until ive had a breakdown#ive had dozens of students with a 10% or less for the semester#i had a student get arrested and he still got to graduate#somethings gotta give or nobody will want to teach anymore#this is actually insane the amount we're expected to do#im sick of reading the same 5 things in all my textbooks#like clearly this shit isn't actually preparing me for what its really like#this is for teaching like... the best of the best students#what about inner city kids??#cause thats where i live#and its a fucking nightmare#what am i supposed to do with my degree now honestly#im so tired#anyways#rant over

Thinking about IDW Optimus again and the fandom's aversion to even acknowledging he exists bc he's a cop or whatever and like. Most of the time people literally just replace him in fic with some white bread knockoff archivist/librarian, not even bothering to keep in IDW OP's personality (which just bolsters my theory that the problem isn't him being a cop the problem is that he's too multifaceted but I digress).
And it's annoying because you could totally write IDW Optimus as not a cop while still keeping his canon personality. You just have to realize that the reason IDW OP became a cop in the first place is because his formative experiences when he was young shaped him to basically have two priorities: 1. To help people and 2. To do it by being on the ground actively doing something about the bad things happening to people.
IDW OP would not be a fucking librarian or archivist because even though those are noble pursuits that can help people and change the world, and Optimus is educated/smart enough for the profession, he wouldn't be satisfied just teaching people or spreading information about activism or social-historical studies or whatever. He's a mech of action: he needs to be doing things right now, in front of him, to people he sees/interacts with in his own eyes, improving society with concrete actions rather than indirect action or abstract inspiration.
So basically the alternate job ideas I can think of for IDW Optimus are something like being a firefighter (or any first responder really) or even whatever the equivalent would be to international charity organizations, those ones that send volunteers across the world to do stuff like build housing/infrastructure or distribute food or whatnot. I mean I can't imagine that the equivalents to these things would be exactly the same in IDW Cybertron, so you'd have to get a little creative with it, but these are just some ideas of jobs that would fit IDW Optimus' personality while still filling the niche of "not a cop" for people who are just that opposed to it.
Though I think the revulsion against coptimus is annoying in general tbh because IDW is already a continuity that rejects the idea of easily defined good/evil people or groups. It feels like people really want Optimus to be a good person in a very sanitized and academically approved way, so he has to be nice and squeaky clean but also like, a perfect leftist who knows theory and holds the most progressive opinions on every single issue....
There is no room for the idea that good people join bad institutions, there's no room for the idea that the reason people think cops are good guys who help people is bc of the government propaganda everything is saturated with. Hell there's even later issues of the Optimus Prime series by John Barber where Optimus like, MULTIPLE FUCKING TIMES, is shown in flashbacks grappling with the fact that he as a cop/Zeta's regime that he works for might not actually be improving society like they say they are, and dealing with the fact that he feels more like a lesser evil compared to the Decepticons (perhaps not "lesser" at all).
It's like there's this idea in fandom of like, fictional media and opinions on media having to strictly adhere to progressive ideals at all times. So people just go "cops bad, this character is a cop, therefore they suck" without being willing to engage with the idea of like. IDW OP is born wanting to fight injustice and protect people -> a good way to protect people is to fight the people who are hurting them and committing crimes -> surely following the law is a reliable moral code to guide him in this -> becomes a cop because he's been indoctrinated into a society (much like our own) where he was told that the state/the law exist to protect the people and being a cop means you get to fight bad guys that hurt people. There's really so many interesting concepts there that could be (and CANONICALLY IS) explored about how good, well-intentioned people can be led to harmful actions simply because they have been fed the idea that the things they're doing are good/helpful/noble. Which is especially important for a character like Optimus, I think, who has a cultural icon status as The Irrefutable and Perfect Good, so it's really important actually to use IDW Optimus as an example of how even the most noble people you know have held problematic beliefs or done bad things at some point in their life. You know, because no one is born perfect and ideologically pure, and in fact society is constructed in exactly a manner to make people drink the kool-aid and believe that the systems designed to hurt them/others are just a normal, if flawed, society.
I mean the writing in IDW literally has Optimus deal directly and indirectly with the harm he's done as a cop and how people don't/didn't trust him because of that. I don't know what the fuck else this fandom wants if the source material literally saying "OP realizes that cops suck and he hurt people and earned their disdain by doing the things he did" doesn't stop them from going EW cop bastard sucks and is the worst Optimus. Like the narrative barely stops short of outright saying ACAB and Optimus himself would agree with this sentiment.
At that point, the collective fandom beef with IDW OP isn't because he's a cop and the narrative didn't do enough to condemn that. The problem is literally just that people don't read and don't care
TLDR: Consider the fact that good people can do bad things sometimes especially when living from birth in a corrupt society that thoroughly disguises its vices/oppressive structures as completely normal parts of existence
#squiggposting#idw op love#like honestly just admit that you havent actually read his parts of the story#or that in a continuity of moral grayness you insist OP must be the one person who's perfectly good#bc idk Optimus is supposed to be good and perfect bc nostalgia/marketing/mythology says he should be#also i feel like theres evidence here of a very juvenile mindset of like#to be good a person has to have all the right beliefs and say it in all the right ways#which is the mindset only extremely insular or inexperienced ppl could possibly have lmao#heartbreaking i know but IRL there are very few people who are and always have been progressive and perfect#there are ppl within progressive mvmts that have unaddressed harmful beliefs outside of their Chosen Issue#there are people who wouldnt ID as progressive at all but are still good ppl who act well towards others#like if youve actually interacted with ppl IRL you understand that if you reject everyone who isnt Perfectly Progressive#youll have few if any allies and possibly alienate ppl who would help/ARE HELPING#like idk do you know how many ppl i personally know who i think have some bigoted/problematic beliefs#but im still friends or collaborators w them bc i understand that theyre still good ppl learning and growing#like. learn to understand that 'goodness' doesnt always look like a walking leftist textbook please i'm begging#and in fact sometimes stories. esp adult and mature ones. will present you w problematic ppl#and you have to like. grapple with their flaws and explore the tension between intention and consequences#a bit of a philosophy tangent rather than anything TF related which is why i kept it to the tags
