#glass animals #honestly i wore out dreamland sm my brain took a lonnng break from expecting anything from them?? idk i’m just huh????#like….. when i say wore out #i cannot describe how much i listened to it #i usually have some vague idea even if it’s a ridiculous number #like 52 times in a month for an album or something (has happened)#i cannot recall w this #gonna say bc 2020 & they were Literally the last band i saw live. next morning everyone found out about everything annd lockdown. no joke #so it was big dreamland time when it dropped and revisiting their past albums when i broke out of its spell lmao #(pretty sure before that like january was when i listened to déjà vu 100+ times in a row tho so oop. it was a tough day lol)#anyway seeing this aww man. i really have had this band with me for a long long time. 🥹 i remember hearing gooey on the radio one night #driving home from work late @ night in 2014. the drive was so short i couldn’t be arsed to fish out my ipod & plug it in #sometimes so just popped on a good station i had preset. started the car and heard this *voice* and i was like who????#had to check the station bc it was an alt station and i thought i had it on another one which was fine i was just v confused #it was in the middle of the song & i was immediately anxious to know the name hoping i’d hear it & it wouldn't just flow into the next song #then the dj would pile the names together after x number of songs played bc i was tiired (but woulda stayed in the car ngl). got lucky &#ran inside to find it then yelled at my roommate the next day that she HAD to listen to it during a smoke session after work #(i was right & it blew her miiind)#god. what a fucking time. what a fucking band. idk what the disc horse is surrounding them now since they blew up via tiktok #i’m sure people are v quick to say they’re overrated bc of that but idk & i’m glad i don’t know. they’ll always be this #highly inventive incredible band i stumbled upon for the perfect night drive home after a long long shift #a band that came back from a Horrible accident that should have ended 1 of their lives & somehow didn’t & should have ended them #as a band (like still cannot believe Joe was drumming in 2020 & i saw it with my own eyes like how tf???!?)#a band deserving of all of its successes. glass animals forever

#There are some things in there that I like but oh god it’s so bad #Just like- so many fundamentally ooc things in it #I also want to add a couple of characters to it #Specifically Clara and Jocelyn Wicker #And maybe Elena too idk #She doesn’t feel as band kid as the others #Clara goes to another school but she’s band captain there and she used to go to the other school so she’s allowed in the gc #Josie was a cheerleader all of middle school and her freshman year but one situationship later she isn’t on speaking terms with half-#-the squad and she needed something to do during the fall semester lest she go insane from being around her mother so she joined color gaur #She plays softball in the spring and does a lot of volunteer work during the winter #hfth

yesterday at 29.5 years old I watched as many videos as I could find from my high school marching band, choir, and theater run crew days and realized I barely have any memories of my junior year of high school (13-14 years ago btw) other than feeling bad™️

#i know i was bullied by people i considered friends and theyre all super christians now which is so discordant with who i am lol #it was def a lonely year but i also like forgot the marching band show (it was p cool)#i literally cried my eyes out when i found the 2011 marching band vids #i was like there's little lost baby me and just wanted to hug her #and say itll be okay youre gonna go through things good and bad that you cant even imagine rn #also looking back im like wow most people were in choir OR band OR run crew #very very few ppl were in all of them and possibly nobody else was in all of those when i was?#i found a kid i guess 8 years younger than me who posted all his jazz band and choir and theater vids from my hs #and thats the only other person i can think of that genuinely got involved in all of those things #being a jack of all the performing arts and master of none was lonely tho #i didnt quite fit into any of the cliques bc i was half in half out of everything #its so insane how much i changed when i got to college (two weeks/14 days after my hs grad bc summer session...)#and that change was not instant #i was a swirly mess figuring out who i was for the first two years of college #i mean life is just a swirly mess of figuring out who you are #but like i got to college and realized i barely actually resonated with anything i was doing #and let go of and then relearned to love things like choral singing and playing flute #choral singing in college was so much better than high school bc it was for fun for everyone instead of the choral girls whole personality..#also the 'best' singers from my high school mostly aren't even in music today or doing any singing outside of karaoke...#at least i wrote a whole ass ep last year???#and ive written much more music that i havent released #idk rambling tags make it sound like the identity struggle never ends but dissociating and forgetting portions of ur life doesnt help lol #t #okay bye

it's funny when people are trying to put pete down by insulting his bass skills or whatever and they're like "he didn't even write fob's most iconic bassline!!!" (which I'm assuming is dance dance ig idk) and it's like. buddy, pal, friendofmine. sibling dearest. I'll do you one better: I can't name a bassline he has written.

great news! it doesn't matter. I'm not suggesting he's a good bassist either, because I've never really seen anything that really supports that idea. but he's not in the band to be the world's best bass player. it's a means to an end. he's a fantastic lyricist, he's a good frontman, and the three other members of fob wouldn't want to be in the band without him. I think that's all you could ever truly ask of him. nice try though

Sips juice box. I like to think the hexsquad start a garage band (goreage band on the boiling isles) briefly post-canon.

Raine taught all of them how to play (Amity on bass and usually vocals, Luz and Hunter on lead and rhythm guitar respectively, Gus on keys/synths and Willow on drums) and shows up to all their practices and the small shows they get to do (things like classmates' birthdays, big festivals/town parties celebrating Belos and the Collector's defeats after the fact, left-hand relief effort fundraisers and dubiously legal music festivals held in the backwoods of latissa).

Raine hypes each and every one of them the FUCK up and spends hours giving them all pointers on their individual instruments and how to play as a unit and, like, listen. Raine is not a parental figure to any of them, really. They just don't have that kind of connection to anyone but King as their step son. But the kids all think Raine is cool as fuck and they crave positive encouragement in their lives. They love Raine. They'd die for Raine. Kill for Raine. Try new tunings and time signatures for Raine (VERY scary). They like being in a band cause it's an excuse to goof off together, express themselves and experiment with a different type of magic, but most of all, they love being in a band bc the middle aged political dissident fucking their friend's adoptive mom is just really goddamn supportive of them.

Nothing particularly noteworthy comes from the band (you guys can suggest fun names for them that are more creative than "the hexsquad"). It truly is just a thing on the side they do for fun and they all have individual careers and hobbies they're far more interested in (Gus is a teaching assistant at Eda's school (qualified to be full time but not allowed to bc of his age, has to wait a few more years), Amity is a field researcher and budding archeologist, Willow is going pro with sports, Hunter is carving and Luz is pursuing higher education).

The most that happens with it is they record a low quality CD (or magic CD equivalent) of demos and covers they put together (Luz and Willow are the main song writers for the group. Both had a lot of angsty pre-teen poetry they work shopped and repurposed for lyrics) that ended up being sold out of the back of Steve's motorcycle (his main career besides burger flipping and baby sitting, all of which makes him infinitely more happy than the emperor's coven ever did).

Raine not only bought a copy of the CD (despite having already heard them play every song before and having been the one to help them record it in the first place) they purchase a copy for ALL of their parents/extended family (Eda, King, Perry, the Parks, Darius, Camila, Gwen and Dell- everyone). Years after the band unofficially dissolves (re: the kids got actual jobs and started having to deal w/ life as adults), Raine still listens to that CD bc they're just so damn proud of their kids.

#ramblings of a lunatic #the owl house #toh #hexsquad #luz noceda #willow park #amity blight #hunter toh #gus porter #raine whispers #hi. this is one of (if not my most!) self indulgent hcs EVER #I'm not even a Serious Musician™ I'm a self taught guitarist who occasionally listens to songs and fantasizes about being in a band #but i for some reason am addicted to analysing what instruments i think characters would play and what they'd be like in a band #idk man it's just fun as hell. i love it #explanations behind each of the instrument choices (besides general vibes) keeping in mind i only play guitar-#i think Amity would've started her music career learning bits of classical piano as a child #before her mom cut her off so she could focus on academics #so when she was older she had a bit of music experience but ultimately chose bass as it was edgier and less stuffy #she's not an amazing basist i think? she's good but she's not a huge fiend for technique. lots of simple punk and indie bass lines #manny played guitar and showed luz bits and pieces when she was young. her experience is no formal education #just a lot of noodling around and learning by ear #hence she's on lead bc she never learned chords #hunter struggles with a lot of fine motor skills tasks in my mind (sewing is his practice for this) so he's more content on rhythm #he's a big bar chords enjoyer but Raine tries to get him to try more versatile open chords out of his comfort zone #gus loooves the customization and sci-fi energy of a synth but in order to play synth he had to learn keys first #Amity showed him some basic chords and exercises and pretty soon he surpassed her despite being self taught #she's only a little bitter about this. mostly she's happy for him. Luz calls him baby mozart. he doesn't get it #finally WILLOW!! she had a baby drumset as a young kid so she could get some energy and aggression out #but the parks' neighbors gave them noise complaints and she stopped after feeling she wasn't progressing with it (couldn't do spells)#she likes it a lot! she feels like the foundation of the performance in a lot of ways and likes being important w/o being a showboat

I just watched an interview with Jean Millington and, from her story, it basically sounds like the lesbian connection between June and Alice was so fucking strong that when June quit Fanny, Alice said "I didn't want to be in a band without June" and quit Fanny, too. The tragic thing about that is, if I remember correctly from an interview or two that I've watched with Alice, Alice basically quit playing drums after that. 😭

listen. i love bruce springsteen. i love ethel cain. american teenager is not the new born to run. it is not born to run if it was written by a bi trans woman instead of a cis man. they are two very different songs in terms of sound and tone, and even theme-wise they run parallel to each other rather than down the same road.

a lot of ethel's music draws from/can be compared to a lot of bruce's songs, especially on his nebraska album, but i'm not seeing where people are getting the born to run comparisons from. if anything, american teenager reminds me of born in the usa if it was sung by the narrator's next-door-neighbor, a secondhand account of the suffering springsteen explores in first person in born in the usa.

also like. both of these songs can stand on their own just fine. a thing can be good on it's own without being compared to another thing.

#also another nitpick is just like #so many people being like 'american teenager is born to run updated for the modern age'#first of all #ethel cain's story as told in the album preacher's daughter #canonically takes place in 1991 #it has a bit of a timeless energy #which brings me to the fact like #born to run is not out of date???#it has that timeless narration energy #and it's not even that culturally irrelevant #bruce sprinsteen released an album last year and is touring Right Now #they both sound timeless!#but ethel cain is her own artist with her own inspirations and idk #it feels kind of pandering to be like 'she's bruce springsteen but woke'#which is weird because it implies that springsteen was never revolutionary in his own sense #like he had an integrated band in the 70s! he regularly kissed a black man onstage! he plays with gender in a way that is interesting #and resonates with a lot of queer people #also it kind of feels insulting to ethel's artistry to go 'she's the trans version of [insert other artist here]!'#still not over the pitchfork review that was like 'what can ethel cain say that lana del rey hasn't already said'#like it just reduces her art to her being trans #instead of letting her music stand on its own #and while her gender identity is important #she is a good musician outside of that #and it's kind of insulting to her clear love for her art and her talent #to consolidate the value of her music to just her identity #ethel cain #bruce springsteen #born to run #preacher's daughter #american teenager

What.... even was Birth Of The Beatles

#The beatles #i watched it fully for the first time just now cuz i got bored the first time #aside from a few funny gags and good character moments the whole movie confused the shit out of me #John why are you making a speech about Stu while people are shouting requests at you???????#ig the point is they dont understand him and he's therefore more willing to express greif #but????#they made Brian seem very desparate which idk if he would have been #Brian's characterisation was so peculiar #neither paul nor george really felt like them and John was.... fine? he sure was John alright #i liked that they had Cyn as much as they did !!! like she was there hanging out with the guys #like she was friends with them all she wasnt just John's girl i like they casually hinted at that friendship #as good as the band Rain is at portraying the beatles vocals im sorry they play in such a manner i feel like im hearing a karaoke backing #large sections of the film were bland and same-y which is a shame #because there were some good bits of banter and personality between the boys #also Astrid telling Stu she wants to cut his hair while theyre in the middle of having sex reads as if its a 'thing' for her #4.9/10 #4 seems mean but i don't have the heart to give it a 5 #Yes girl give us nothing!
