This is an interesting point about art.
People in 2024 will say that for e.g. far right art can't be good, but the thing is, people who believe terrible things have made great art since always. Ayn Rand genuinely moves people. I don't get it, I find her prose dull, but she does. Hitler wrote a bestseller. Thomas of Aquinas blamed women for many of his problems and is still more revered than not. And of course every year another Joss Whedon turns out to have been terrible all along and we all have to discover that we didn't REALLY love everything he did for twenty years. I'm not even going to address the elephant in that room, but you all know its looming sorting-hat-shaped shadow.
The reason most extremist art is terrible now is, I think, that extremists are no longer willing to traffic in implication. For example, I'm a Christian (I love you gay Methodists), and I like the Conjuring movies even though the Warrens were terrible.
These movies are explicitly pro-Christian. They believe in an afterlife, heaven, hell, demons exorcism. On the culturally conservative end, they're about a loving cis heterosexual married couple with a beloved daughter, and they never mention or acknowledge that LGBT people exist that I can recall.
Right-wing Christians will not watch or accept these films, because they are horror films, or because they don't adhere strictly to the doctrine of a given denomination. For a movie to be publicly acceptable as a Christian film by contemporary American Christianity, it has to either be a Bible story or be God's Not Dead, a movie where (spoilers!) an atheist left-wing college professor gets hit by a car and Christians coerce him into converting in order to ensure that he goes to Heaven.
This creates a bizarre environment where left-wing films are unacceptable because they have left-wing implications, but films with right-wing implications are unacceptable because they are not right-wing enough.
As a horror fan, this is not only bizarre but hilarious. Many horror fans will watch something based on a vibe regardless of its philosophical implications, because you don't have to agree with a film in order for it to scare you. I think this is why The Conjuring franchise is so popular even though I suspect horror fans lean further left than a lot of other filmgoers.
So the ultimate result of this is that fundamentally conservative art is more likely to be observed and discussed by people further to the left than the artist, just like this social media post. This is important, because ideas should be seen and discussed so that we can openly decide which ones are hot garbage, just like the original anonymous message. And I think it's also important because if we only acknowledge and boost what we disagree with that actually has artistic merit, the overall marketplace of ideas still benefits by examining different perspectives without admitting the ones that amount to inarticulate screaming at a minority group.
This is especially important to me because it's how I was de-radicalized as a young person from my very right-wing conservative upbringing - by interacting with critical examination of ideas in art as well as by meeting real people that did not reflect the demonized image of minorities that I grew up around. I think both of those things are important to those that process. And that can't happen unless someone drags forward anonymous pieces of artful hate into the light of day so that we may submit them to the dissecting pins and scalpel of real criticism.
Tumblr media
Normally, I just block people and leave their nonsense unposted... but this is art.

i'm not saying this to be callous or rude, but i think what's hitting a lot of buckt*mmys hard is that they're truly just unable to admit that they aren't very good at media analysis. the term 'media literacy' has become so overused in fandom that i genuinely think people forget what it means- it's a learned skill, something you have to study, something you can educate yourself on by reading papers and books and watching all sorts of movies and tv. they're all so convinced that the breakup came out of nowhere when it could not have been written more clearly; tommy has consistently been shown as an outsider in buck's life.
to claim that "everything was perfect" in 8x05 is so ridiculous i almost don't even know where to start. they had two scenes without eddie: in the first, tommy was incredibly condescending towards buck and and his interests (it's time to put away the screen, you already had your five minutes, lights out evan), and in the second scene buck literally says "my boyfriend won't even kiss me" and tommy responds with "that's not true" but they pointedly do NOT show them kissing. if the audience is meant to believe that buckt*mmy are endgame, it would have made perfect narrative sense to have them kiss right then to show (not just tell) us that tommy cares about buck, boils and all, and they did not do that.
moving onto 8x06, the only clue needed to show us they were going to break up was tommy buying buck lakers tickets. that's all it took. in 7x04 it's made so clear that buck does not like basketball. if tommy genuinely knew buck, he would not have bought him tickets to a sport the show dedicated an entire episode to telling us buck does not like! if their relationship was meant to last, tommy could have bought buck tickets to a fight in vegas like he did with eddie. this would have been a great callback, because it's supposedly the first moment buck got jealous of tommy and eddie hanging out. it would remind the audience that even though buck was jealous, he got tommy in the end and they're now doing the activities he wanted to do with tommy before.
once again, media analysis is a skill. no one is perfect at it, and ofc shows can throw away the book and make decisions that don't make sense. but to claim this came out of nowhere shows a severe lack of knowledge and understanding of how stories are written. the shippers were seeing what they wanted to see and they missed all the signs the show was sending them, and now they're claiming the rug was pulled out from under them.

I've been griping about the normalization of identity outing via social media for a while now. To put it simply, it's become almost some weird societal requirement that if you don't have every detail listed about yourself in your Twitter/FB/etc. bio, then it means you have "something to hide" or that you're not as "verifiable" because your account looks indistinct from that of a bot.
But that societal norm has really only benefited the people who profit off of that information in some way, whether it's through selling user data or through weaponizing details about a person against them.
I know that a lot of us love to use the fun little labels and acronyms in our bio that help others like us identify us as a 'safe person' or as someone who's in the same social/racial/identity groups as them. We're humans, we love to categorize things, it's in our nature (and it's fun!)
But if there's any time to start regulating that habit and challenging the norm that you're obligated to include all your personal info online - it's now.
There was a time when sock puppet accounts were expected and typical, not "suspicious".
There was a time when even age-sex-location was considered "too much information", but once it became the norm, we only EVER gave our personal information beyond generic ASL to people who we knew both online and in real life, or at the very least, people who we had known online for a significant enough amount of time that they had proved to be trustworthy (and even then, we didn't owe that information to anyone, ever; there are forum friends who I made online 10+ years ago and still talk to who do not know my personal information beyond broad strokes).
There was a time when simply being an avatar with a funny username was enough. And it still is enough, but massive platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been brainwashing us for years to believe that's not the case, under the guise of, "You wouldn't want to be dishonest, would you?" Through these same norms, we were led to believe that anime profile pictures are cringe, that having a fake online name is stupid, that the photos of you having fun at social events have to be taken JUST right otherwise you might imply to others that you're not actually having fun.
And considering how long these platforms have been around now, we have entire generations of children now who have been born and raised on that version of the ZuckMusk web, who have been taught that it "protects them" to express to everyone publicly their age, their school, their workplace, their family members, everything about themselves, because to not do so would be disingenuous.
None of this is to imply that the Internet was "safer" back in the day. I definitely should not have been on the Internet as much as I was when I was 13 in the late 2000's, it definitely did not benefit my brain development or my social skills. But the version of the Internet we currently exist in now is one that's been predicated on the false sense of security - the belief that if you're honest, everyone else has to be, too.
We've always had ways of identifying our safe people - by participating in the communities that we know are designed around our hobbies, our interests, our people. They might be small, they might not be as "cool" as the idea of netting yourself a big following of thousands of people, but they're also a lot safer and more genuine than that idealized following ever could be.
Don't feel pressured to include every bit of information about yourself in your bio. Even on Facebook, there's no rule that says you have to list your workplace, your school, your family members. There's no rule that says you have to list your personality type, queer labels, and neurodivergent disorders in your Twitter bio. There's no rule that you have to "prove" your life is real and fulfilled through the verification of photos, location tagging, and open-book sharing. If you share those photos, it should be because you genuinely want to share them, not because you feel some societal pressure to live up to others' expectations.
And I guarantee you, even your local mutuals on Facebook - your former classmates, family friends, distant relatives, coworkers, etc. - do not actually give that much of a damn about your personal life that they should be owed that much of a look into it on a daily basis. They've got their own shit going on, they literally do not need to know every detail about you.
I know it sounds scary. It also sounds kind of boring, when we've been used to a certain "way" of browsing and participating for years, that if we don't do so, it feels like being in the "out group" and that we're "breaking the rules". But I promise you, after spending over half my life online, those rules do not exist or benefit anyone who wouldn't profit off that information.
If you're wanting to learn how to branch off from major platforms like Facebook and Twitter and/or become more self-sufficient online, here are some guides to navigating the Internet like an old schooler that may help you!
FREE SITE BUILDER:
DIGITAL PIRACY 101:
(also in addition to everything mentioned here ^^^ they neglect to also mention Tor Browser which is a light and free-to-use browser software that allows you to browse anonymously; note that it's similar to a VPN in that it helps hide your identity online, HOWEVER it won't mask you from your ISP quite as effectively as a VPN, and if you sign into personal accounts with Tor, that's still going to obviously out you online lmao but I love using Tor for the odd time when I need to make a sock puppet for something and don't want it linked to my IP! and unlike a VPN, it's free to use!)
LEARN HOW TO USE RSS FEEDS:
People still use these! They're especially helpful for getting updates from your favorite pages and sites directly to your browser WITHOUT having to worry about stupid algorithm bullshit picking and choosing what you see. And many sites DO have RSS support once you know how to find it! (like adding in /rss at the end of a URL! Like this!)
FAKE EMAIL SERVICES:
LEARN HOW TO CODE IN HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPT (AND MORE!):
DECENTRALIZED SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS:
I hope this helps arm you with some new knowledge in how to navigate the Internet like a Certified Old Person™️(like meeee!) Make your secret alt blogs for besties! Make your formal Facebook accounts that are clean of personal information and present the most neutral, safe-for-work version of yourself and keep the fun stuff to the secret profiles and chat groups that are just for you and friends/family/etc!! It might be "inconvenient" to have multiple accounts for the same purpose, but it's also INCREDIBLY freeing and can make your online experience both safer and more enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Being "less" of yourself online does not make you any less you. It is your identity - you do not owe any amount of it to anyone beyond yourself. And in times like these, your identity is your greatest asset. Protect it.

my recs of things for ppl to watch to recover from the 911 suckfest
brilliant minds
yes it's an ongoing show so nothing is guaranteed, but the main character is a gay man played by a gay actor, he has one significant love interest who the story is already progressing with, and it has the fun case-of-the-week procedural style while also having genuine heart and empathy
roswell new mexico
does 911's messy writing, weird pacing and insane soap opera plots appeal to you? but you wanna watch something already complete, where the bi man and his boyfriend are soulmates who get a 100% definitively happy ending? here u go
911 lone star
here's the most obvious one, but if you've held off checking out LS so far, now's the time to go there instead. tarlos are a beautiful relationship who are main to the show, their relationship is prioritised, they're both played by queer actors, and they are gonna end the show as husbands with minimal nasty surprises. it has the usual 911 flavour with a little more diversity.
schitt's creek
a later-in-life coming out storyline between a gay man and a bi/pan man actually being handled well? with heart and an adorable happy ending? revolutionary!
the long call
i doubt many ppl have heard of this one, but it's a UK crime miniseries that i personally rlly enjoyed. the main character is a gay detective in his 30s who is happily married, and he and his slightly older husband are great support systems for each other. if you like the more serious procedural side of 911 you may enjoy this. (it doesn't seem they intend to make more episodes, but if they ever did, it's based on a book series ive read all of so u know the couple will stay together). perfect length to watch in a day or two to cleanse ur palate right now
if anyone has any other recs of shows with mlm couples in their 30s+ with happier endings, please share 🤎

asexuality sillies aside, let's appreciate the results here!! as an ace myself i'm fascinated by the severe difference between how sexual attraction Actually Works and how it's treated in society, and this here is a clear example! a small portion of the results didn't feel them until they were the age we expect to be out of highschool. a smaller chunk were even older than that. i'd be genuinely interested to know how many of the older folks are trans and Suddenly Stopped Being Ace when they took HRT, because that's a thing that's known to happen and it's really interesting to me, but the point remains that it is perfectly normal for a teenager, even an older one, to not feel anything yet. rare, but normal! (using the numbers at time of reblog) 3.7% of 28,229 is 1044 people who didn't feel sexual attraction until they were over 18. and then that's 7.1% who were 6-9, the earliest puberty ages!! 1.9% even younger than that!! combined, that's 9%; 2540 people who felt sexual attraction before they were 10. and that's on a pretty small sample size, with MOST people who answered being aspec, and we still found TONS of people who were, in essence, horny children! and that's really important to me, because there's so much emphasis in society to shield kids from sexuality and how even the most basic, biology-based sex ed will Corrupt their Innocent Little Minds..... and a bunch of them are already there. they're already stealing dad's magazines. they're already staring at their teacher's arms. they are already sexual beings, naturally, and it is not hurting them. and at least in america, they're having SO many other feelings explained to them like sad and happy and angry... but they're not allowed to even HEAR about these ones until much, much later. i have often found myself wondering if i would be less sex repulsed if we had just been fucking normal about bodies and genitals and sex from the start, instead of Hiding it and then making it Dirty and Bad. and this only makes me wonder even harder.

All right, besties. I had my days of depression and (bad) ideations, I had my flare of anger. It's easy to fall into despair, but let's focus that energy to thinking further ahead. Firstly: by focusing on our health and eating.
You've probably noticed in the last few months, a lot of food recalls from the FDA. The majority of these, particularly the most recent ones around heavily processed chicken in ready-meals and beef in fast food restaurants, are a direct result of the 45th president cutting back health regulations in industrialized food production four to six years ago that we're just now seeing the results of as it's gone through the process and finally hit shelves.
Now would be a good time to start looking into your local farmer's markets and sourcing your meats and produce from locally owned farms you trust. Start developing a good relationship with your local farmers and butchers. When you go to see them, just get to know them and ask some general questions.
A lot of these places are family run, particularly if you're not close to a large metropolitan area. So when you go to see these folks and they make small talk (because they will, they want to know what brought you out, how'd you find their farm, what kinds of meats and cuts and whatever you're looking for, just genuine small talk), do not bring up politics or USDA regulations. Literally just tell them that you're interested in sourcing and supporting local agriculture and farming (which is true, you are wanting to get away from big corporate industrialized meat production).
If your area has a good farmer's market during the spring/summer/fall, absolutely hit that up. The one close by me not only has good meats and produce, but also honey, different kinds of cheeses, all sorts of things. Farmer's markets closer to a city or metropolitan area will usually only be on weekends during the warmer seasons so keep an eye out and check out any options you have.
I'll give a starting resource for you: https://www.localharvest.org/locations/
Any local farms or farmer's markets that are registered there in the mainland US will have some listings there with hours of operation, location and what they produce, as well as if they're a farm, a farmer's market, a grocery, or a local restaurant, as well as reviews. Use that and source further and find other farms that aren't registered on that site that may have more of what you're looking for. The farming community talk to each other and they know what's up with the other farms.
If you want to go out and pick your own produce (berries, fruits, etc), there's https://upickfarmlocator.com/ that will show you any "u-pick" farms and orchards in your area. It's a pretty in depth resource that I'd recommend using if you're able to go out and do that.
There are a few urban harvesting resources like fallingfruit, but I'm not as familiar with that so I can't in good faith recommend it until I've done some research into it myself.
I'm mostly familiar with chicken farms and fish ponds so I can't provide much insight to cattle or game meat, unfortunately. If anyone who sees this post is familiar, please feel free to add on. I'm also not a source for how to skin your meat or pluck your birds, so again, if anyone seeing this has any insight, please please add on to this.
Let's keep each other healthy and strong so we can fight the good fight ahead of us. The biggest advice I can give to anyone starting this journey is to research. Research anything you're interested in and don't give up.
I'll update this post with any other resources I find, or that others add on. This post is recent as of 2024-11-08.
(And yes, I know, before anyone comes rushing in, I understand this is not as easy for larger metropolitan areas or food deserts. Yes I know not everyone has the ability to go out and do this, and not everyone has easy transportation to haul goods back. This is where the "community" part comes if you can coordinate a group renting a car or someone who does drive to get everyone out there and back. And yes, before other folks come in, I understand sometimes it's better to grow your own produce and raise your own livestock, this is for the folks who don't have the ability to whether that's because of physical disabilities, lack of space [Hi, I live in a condo and have no space to grow my own in fact], or any other reason why they can't.)

I got a party banter between Bellara and Taash about how the Lords of Fortune steal elven artifacts. And then Taash clarifies later that they have a Dalish expert on the team so they can check to make sure the Lords don't sell something culturally important and instead return it to the elves.
Like. I get it. You want the Lords to be fun swashbuckler Disney pirates and Robin Hoods instead of actual pirates who steal and plunder. Because we're only now in Western society realizing that stealing from indigenous groups is, uh, bad. But like. Writing really uninteresting factions for your "dark" fantasy (tho lbr Dragon Age hasn't been dark fantasy since DA2) isn't gonna solve real-world neo-colonialism, ya know? The Lords not stealing priceless elven artifacts and returning them to the elves doesn't signal to me that the Lords are total rascally good guys, it signals to me that BioWare itself is trying really hard to seem morally conscious. "See? We know stealing from other cultures is bad!!!"
And man. Not to be a "political correctness has poisoned media" grifter on main (tbh it's less political correctness itself and more the commodification of real-world activism) but I couldn't help but imagine how this convo would've played out in earlier games, potentially even Inquisition.
You could've so EASILY made this interesting while giving the Lords and Taash and Bellara a lot more depth, while also making it clear that stealing from indigenous groups is wrong.
Just have the Lords, yeah, actually sell those artifacts. But also establish that the Lords take in and help elves from all walks of life. That they free slaves, or collaborate with alienages. Then you could have Taash defend the practice by saying to Bellara that little orphaned elf kids being sold as slaves probably don't give a flying fuck about some artifacts they're never gonna see, but the money from selling those artifacts goes to buying them food. And have Bellara fire back that preserving elven culture is also part of its survival, and that there are Dalish clans that would be willing to pay for them or offer something in return. Or have her say that the Lords are doing charity for the sake of recruitment rather than actual altruism. And then Taash responds that those high and mighty Dalish elves don't do shit to help abandoned city elves, just because those aren't part of their correct elven subculture, and they care more about reclaiming old glory than helping the people that exist here and now.
Then you could have side missions or at least codex entries that describe maybe some Lord recruit being conflicted about what they're doing. Maybe a few of them are collaborating to hijack a deal or steal back an artifact. Have implications that some high-ranking Lords are, in fact, using those artifacts for their own gain, despite claiming otherwise. Have some Lords genuinely trying to help, and believing that gold and trinkets don't matter as much as people's lives, so they sell them in exchange for safety for refugees or slaves or some other helpless group.
But no. Instead it's "hey do you steal from my people?" "nah lmao we have a cultural advisor don't even worry about it" "oh wow so cool and woke of you!" And then that's it. No need for any further discussion. No conflict and no complexity. No bad actors and moral quandaries.
Weh.

hi! this is a loaded question but you're a voice i really appreciate. genuinely thank you for keeping calm and moving forward.
i was wondering: why does the left seem to have less "loyalty" to their biggest political party? i'm not trying to say we should be doing this, but the contrast between us and the right is so interesting to me. trump's numbers are generally similar to what they were, with some decrease. just personally, i know so many people who voted for trump despite assuring me that they dislike him, because his vision of america is apparently closer to what they want. and these are not maga, #get-rid-of-all-immigrants type people. they're moderate, in their own words. this has been consistent for the past few years; obviously i'm not a perfect representation, but i do meet a lot of people because of the nature of my job (and generally check in with them again after some time has passed), and this hasn't wavered.
there's a level of "will vote republican even if i hate it and am embarrassed by some of their stances" that i don't think many democrats have? maybe it's just the social media bubble but to me it feels like democrats struggle everyday to maintain the people they have. even some good legislative successes seem to be quickly followed by "ok but that's not enough", and when there are issues because of conservative control, even then democrats are blamed for. i guess. not having power and not blocking this?
or maybe you disagree entirely! just wanted to know your thoughts.
The answer is more obvious than you realize:
The right wing is built on authoritarianism, and authoritarians are more likely to fall in line with what they've been told.
That's it. It's really that simple.

Even to someone who thinks they're a centrists, terfs are a right-wing movement. They aren't feminists in any actual capacity. They don't care about women's rights. They are openly willing to work with fascists because they are fascists only interested in the extermination of trans people. Describing them as left wing isn't remotely true. It's doing the work of their propaganda for them. They aren't feminists.
I know what you mean by it seeming like people categorically just hate men in general. It's kind of a two pronged issue that you're describing, but both of them definitely do happen.
First, with the women and nb spaces, they do suck. Majorly, but it's not flat hatred of men. I've been refused entrance into those spaces and definitely don't feel safe in them. The ones I've encountered are basically terf-lite. They don't trust me because I'm trans, and thus don't qualify as a woman in their eyes.
It sucks. It sucks in a way that is just incredibly painful. Calling it man hatred or misandry is missing the wider picture, though.
The kinds of people who trust a trans masc until they look masculine don't just distrust men, either. It's a similar issue of not seeing the wider picture. They trust a trans guy at first because they still see them as a girl, just one that wants to be called a guy. They're transphobic as well, and that's what paints the picture of this irrational hatred of men. They don't treat cis men this way. They are specifically cruel to trans men because of their transphobia.
For the second part, yeah, men get treated way differently as a class. Women are especially closed off around them. If that was the whole of the situation, then yeah, it'd be accurate to point at it ass the problem.
It's not, though. Women are careful around men because we have to be. Society as a whole is constantly conditioned to trust men (particularly white, able bodied, etc) over women. The reason that men get treated with suspicion by default is because they have the power to ruin a woman's life and will never face any consequences for it at best, or be rewarded for putting a bitch in her place at worst.
Especially with abortion being so attacked, there are legal fucking consequences to trusting a man now. That's true of anyone who can get pregnant, too. I've heard some heart wrenching horror stories of cis dudes trying to get trans mascs pregnant to force them into "being a woman." Like, trusting the wrong dude can literally kill you.
And it's ass. It really sucks to have to treat dudes like this, but you really can't blame this on non men or the left. I've seen this same conversation around bipoc creating nonwhite spaces. It was genuinely hurtful to me at first, but like. When I actually stopped to look at the entire situation, it was really easy to see why. White people are an actual, tangible risk to bipoc in a way that they need protection from.
The solution isn't to get rid of nonwhite spaces. The solution has to be dismantling the power structures that enable this oppression.
And it still hurts!!! Genuinely, it sucks to be on the other side of this! I've been there. I know that pain is real, but it wouldn't have helped those nonwhite spaces to waste their time telling white woman four thousand eight hundred and six the basics of racism. They had their own shit to work through.
Falling into this idea of the left hates men is falling into the same trap that I did back then. It's taking the pain of an oppressive class at face value. You just can't stop there. You have to look deeper than the pain.
It hurts, but when you see what powers are at play, you can work towards meaningful change.
the amount of redditors like "as someone who escaped the alt right pipeline, here's the problem with the left" *writes out essay revealing a massive victim complex*...you did NOT escape the right i'm afraid 😭🙏 at the core of reactionary politics is aggrieved entitlement!

i'm gonna be a ranty bitch for a minute.
tbh i'm turned off even reading new buddie fic despite being a multishipper and have unfollowed a bunch of buddie accounts because i'm sick of the smug attitudes. one ask that i am otherwise not going to publish or respond to ended with 'sorry you don't understand media literacy bestie :)' fuck off. listen INFANT, i have been writing fanfic and original fic AND watching, reading and analyzing queer media since before you were born, i understand how character and story development works, and i know the difference between 'storyline i personally disliked' and 'bad writing.' this was BOTH, and it also was marketed to us as 'carefully crafted bi rep' and 'queer love story that is not about a bunch of pain and conflict FOR ONCE' so we have every right to be upset at the bait-and-switch.
the fact that i'm seeing the same exact posts - 'bt bones buddie CANON' that i saw three seasons ago after the bucktaylor breakup, or every time they thought buck and taylor MIGHT break up - says something. the fact that so many fans seem genuinely convinced (STILL!) that buddie is inevitable because there have been so many 'signs,' and then they rattle off a convoluted theory that would make the most hardcore taylor swift stan say 'wow, that's a bit of a reach,' honestly weirded me out a little when i first joined the 911 fandom. i have never been in a fandom where so many fans are insistent that their ship will be - not might be or could be, but WILL be - canon. i am skeptical both from past experience with other shows mishandling queer storylines or ship-baiting, and tim minnear's proven track record with this one of not really knowing what to do with buck's LI's. but i didn't want to yuck anybody's yum, so i let them have their theories and squee in peace, and unfollowed or blocked certain tags if i was seeing too much of it and getting annoyed. it's too out there for me, but i'm glad they're having fun!
yet they can't give us the same courtesy. they deride us as delusional for thinking that a canon pairing that was presented to us both in promo and the show itself as different and important (eg the bobby approval convo and 'buck getting off the hamster wheel') might last, and we're stupid to have ever liked tommy or lou or be disappointed at how the breakup was written, and if we point out the biphobia it's just sour grapes.
the bucktommy breakup is not the first time 911 has started out strong with an interesting storyline and fumbled it in the 4th quarter either because the writers got bored or in the name of needless drama/a 'gotcha' sudden twist. amir & bobby, eddie's fight club arc, the sperm donor SL, hen vs councilwoman ortiz, whatever the hell is going on with harry, the whole mess with shannon/kim, just to name a few. and especially the past couple of seasons, for me since 6b, the pacing has been off. they seem to have too much happening at once and many of the storylines don't have enough room to breathe to be narratively satisfying, or they get resolved in ways that feel lackluster.
if the toxic buddie stans who have been attacking lou on sm and sending death threats (wtf!) actually get what they want, which i admit is possible, but it's certainly not guaranteed….i don't know why they think the writers won't fumble that just as badly. it's not going to happen precisely the way they want it to because it is impossible to please everybody, that's what fanfic is for. but at this point i have zero faith that it would even be well done at all, and zero trust in the writers not to just sabotage or regress a character for funsies, and that's an excellent reason to stop watching the show. in most of my other fandoms i regard canon as a jumping-off point or a blurry outline at best, and i can have just as much fun in the 911 sandbox without any further input from canon at all, once i'm less angry.

Its so funny to me when i still see Charlastor haters claim that people "only ship it out of spite!" When it was literally the most popular ship of al Hazbin Hotel since the very start, LMAO!
Like back in the pilot day, every time you looked up fanarts and fancomics of Hazbin Hotel it was almost inevitable to get Charlastor things even when you werent looking for it, it was basically THE hazbin ship.
People just loved the dinamic they showed, even some just acepted it as canon.
It helped a lot that the canon relationship Charlie had with Vaggie was so lifeless that 80% of the viewers didnt even register it as it was meant to be romantic.
Something that stuck with me was that someone on twitter said that they watched the Hazbin pilot with some of their lesbian friends, and after watching it they (the lesbians) said that they thought Alastor was meant to be Charlie's love interest.
Also there were people thinking that Vaggie was meant to be a family member of Charlie due their interactions.
When i watched the pilot i thought that Vaggie was just a close friend of Charlie that had a little secret crush on Charlie, but even i suspected that i could be wrong and it was only meant to be friends lmao.
But yeah, Charlastor was the ship for the fandom since the pilot, to this day is basically an important pillar of the fandom.
Also, the "father-daughter" dynamic they tried to put on them was so forced embarassing and people already decided they work better as lovers. Like at this point people just took it as "your daughter calls me daddy too".
Charlastor isnt my cup of tea, but i have a huge respect for the shippers who still post content of them as much as many of the fans (and even the creator of the goddamn show) hate it and try to bully them off the fandom. The haters are just the dumbest bitches on earth and i like making fun of them.
My theory is that a lot of people, definitely in the Viv realm but also in modern day fandom in general, view fandom as less a hobby than something you do in service to a specific creator or idea. So if you're creating fanworks for something like Charlastor, it has to be out of pure spite and not because you just...genuinely like this very popular, very enduring ship that Viv happens to hate.
That, and also they're the dumbest bitches on Earth.

That video got me thinking, do you think HL genuinely likes meeting his fans? Or does he not care about them and just sees it as another publicity thing?
good question! i waffle on this a lot.
he obviously doesn't respect his fans. he's quick to show disgust or annoyance with them.
Tumblr media
i do wonder if this specific instance was partly to make Maeve laugh, which it did. because while he may not like or respect his fans, he does value their love and admiration. most of his breakdowns have to do with the possibility of losing their approval.
it's interesting to watch how smoothly and willingly he engages with and embraces total strangers over and over, though. hugs from celebrities are sort of a bizarre parasocial phenomena when you really think about it. it's just expected that he would do it. knowing how he was raised, it makes sense that he wouldn't even consider refusing a hug, even if he doesn't want to do it. he doesn't maintain boundaries it's just another aspect of agency he does not have.
though it's entirely possible that the first person to actually hug him in his adult life was a fan. maybe part of him enjoyed aspects of it when he was younger, but then he mostly grew out of it. i can't imagine how much he struggles as someone who is both touch starved AND touch averse. i think that's part of why his suit and gloves are so important for him. they serve as a physical barrier to help him not be so overwhelmed by so much direct contact.
imo Homelander has a lot of conflicting emotions regarding his fans and the public in general. he believes they're beneath him, yet he craves their approval. he's their god, yet he's the one who must perform for them. appease them. he must make them think he loves them so that they will love him. he thinks of them as a monolith, and he cares about them in that regard, but as individuals they're entirely disposable.
i usually depict him as having a certain level of face blindness as a by product of meeting so many people a day that he just does not care about. which is why it's interesting to me when he does suddenly take note of someone.
anyways! long story short! it's both. it's a publicity thing, but it's also the closest thing he has to a stable sense of love and self.

I genuinely agree. This is probably their one chance to do a proper love interest for Buck but all the post episode interviews makes it seem like Lou/Tommy aren't coming back.
So they're going to make Buck sleep around and give him meaningless relationships and put him back to where he was after Abby like nothing has happened and it's all been worthless.
Someday we'll find him married to some random woman who's a teacher or something they want us to believe is his true love but is all wrong.
So what was the point of bringing Tommy/Lou back for Season 8?
To teach Buck that things weren't always as good for queer people? To make him fall for someone again-truly, for the first time since Abby- just to make him lose it all again?
What was the point?
Because all it was 30 seconds of flirting, an episode of Tommy being an amazing boyfriend and falling in love with Buck on the spot, and then pulling the most contrived connection shit, giving us and him hope for the future, and dropping the floor under us.
With broken promises of hints about Tommy's father and his want to be part of a found family-like what the actual fuck was the waiting at the hospital when Denny was injured scene, Tim Minear???? What was the actual point of it?
The graveyard? The posse?
Literally everything in the last episode was pointless. This is so cruel. And it is SO cruel to Buck.

I love Johnathan "It seems my academic detachment has fled me" Sims with my whole heart, and honestly it's because he's a fucking prick. He spends all of season 1 genuinely being a massive asshole, and not just on the outside, he's a prick through and through. I think there's an instinct to justify his behavior because people like him, but I think that's discounting what makes him interesting.
Yes, when he lies and pretends that he is skeptical, it is out of self-preservation. It is out of fear. But he allows his fear to become something that hurts the people around him. He calls multiple people, traumatized people looking for help, delusional. To their faces. It's not the only thing he says, but he says it with a heavy tone of condescension and irritation, two things that vulnerable frightened people do not need. Both Martin and Sasha almost end up dead because they're convinced that John won't take them seriously if they don't have good enough evidence of their experiences. He's a huge asshole to Martin for literally no reason. You aren't obligated to like everybody, but goddamn, John, some thoughts are inside thoughts!
And then he realizes that he's a massive prick, at some point in the latter half of season 2. Really realizes it, realizes how much his actions impact the people around him. And he doesn't really stop for a long time, arguably he doesn't stop ever. But holy shit, he tries. He tries with everything in his entire being to be better. He puts his whole life into being better than he was, into trying to fix what he feels he broke, and he will try and try and try until his hands bleed and his legs collapse under him because he let people suffer under his watch and by his own hand and Never Again. I think that's why he leans so hard into sacrificing himself, it's the cumulative guilt of everything, even stuff before the Magnus Institute, and he really does think that he can only be good if he destroys himself in the process because what the hell has ever been good about him?
And that's horrifying, and tragic, and fascinating. God, he's such a good character

Im just gonna say it... TEE is 100% holding out, and bullshitting he's probably upset about not getting the money he wants, and it’s killing us. Even his mom didn’t know he was “hurt” again! *a few weeks ago on Twitter* for legal reasons, this is pure speculation, but if it's true, he's an asshole and he needs to be cursed out. He’s too talented to be sidelined, especially in games we might’ve won with him there. But this is also a front office and coaching problem as much as I would love to blame Zach taylor for everything. The truth is everyone and dare i say even the players have contributed to this little losing streak we keep having. Joe and Ja’Marr COMPLETELY BALLED OUT this game, even burtons childish ass did his little one-two, and they still lost. I'm a bengals girlie down, so I'm always gonna be screaming who dey!! But I just don't think this season is gonna be their season. Granted, you never know, so I'm not gonna accept defeat yet, but this is ridiculous and INSANE. I don't usually take games personally, but they should've won this game.
okay i know we're all upset but i'm going to try my best to write my thoughts about this as clear as possible. this is entirely speculation and it's the only time i will talk about this. if you don't want to see/hear this, just scroll.
i don't disagree with you. while he could genuinely be unable to practice/play, his mom saying that she was unaware that he was injured again kind of bothered me.
if he is holding out, i can't say i blame him. why would i put my body and my health further on the line for a team where it's becoming clear that i am not valued the way i should be.
if the rumors are true and tee is not *as* injured as they're making it out to be & he might walk at the end of the end of this season, it would be in his best interest strategically to have this narrative of being the bengals' missing link to save their record. whether or not that's true doesn't matter because we have nothing to suggest that he isn't the reason why they can't close games.
if i was tee, on this team with a losing record and i'm the second priority to ja'marr, why would i potentially risk a good contract with a team that might make me wr1? especially considering this is not a good season for the bengals and these things do weigh on the player's psyche and subconsciously influence how they move through negotiations.
i truly want the best for tee and that includes staying healthy and getting the money he 100% deserves. at the end of the day, the bengals are where they are and that's that. it's not tee's fault. it's not entirely zac's fault. it's the bengals front office's fault.
