i would actually really disagree with the lack of compatibility thing?

i think that gem is outgoing but still introverted, and she really loves talking to people and making a lot of friends, as well as helping out those friends! we see this with skizz���s terraforming, building the pathing infrastructure near cherry mountain, and with her letting etho take whatever he wants from her base! but at the same time that she is helpful, she is not a people pleaser. she’s assertive and funny. she goes up to her friends chests and takes stuff out bc “these are mine now actually” but she has the ability to do that bc she’s so charismatic and easy to love!

and this plays very well with etho’s general awkwardness to the point of nigh agoraphobia at some points. (i hc c!etho as selectively mute bc he just. doesn’t/can’t talk if he feels socially anxious. he accidentally built up a persona of cool and aloof despite being the wettest cat alive.) i am very new here but i think the first time they spoke to each other for an extended period of time was while gem was teaching him how to fight. and bc gem’s charisma comes from being adaptable to situations but still maintaining her personality, she was able to teach etho a lot (counter-critting, stopping sprinting in order to crit, crit combos) and they both very clearly enjoyed it a lot! etho and gem were laughing and talking basically the whole time, and i think that’s where their dynamic of mutually teasing each other as a way to show affection started. gem didn’t treat etho like someone on a pedestal they could never reach, and she also didn’t expect him to be amazing right away. she let him be fallible and we know that all of the ppl etho is close to do the same things. every duo etho is a part of has a strong dynamic of mutual teasing. him and bdubs, him and cleo, him and joel, and more recently him and tango. with tango though that relationship is pretty new and so a lot of their interactions are just focused on redstone.

and i don’t think gem is that feral or frantic? she gets very absorbed into her projects and she likes being silly with it. she also Commits to the Bit. but i don’t think, at least this season, she’s very off-the-wall. again, i’m new here, and i’ve only seen gem’s perspective of her s10 videos and the hide and seek one, so i am still new to her character/persona.

i think one reason ppl may think of her as feral is because of the way she interacts with specifically etho. and also the “geminislay” nickname. but she’s more than that nickname. in all of the clips of them in decked out, she is at max energy and is constantly punching/fighting etho, but they’re both giggling like schoolgirls the entire time. she doesn’t do that to other ppl though, so it’s not just her general personality. it’s her cute aggression instinct. she’s infatuated with etho so naturally her reactions to anything he does are going to be exaggerated and over the top. but she’s not always seized by that cute aggression instinct, she’s absolutely able to hang out with etho while at a lower level of intensity. etho though does sometimes instigate bc he also thinks she’s adorable. he hit her like 6 times as they dug the tunnel, i’m not convinced that all of those were accidental.

and etho isn’t laid back and serene, he’s earnest and silly and intelligent but also very uncomfortable in most social situations. the recent clip of him literally being a wet cat while asking beef for shulkers (he wants them nyeow!!) is a bit of an insight into how he is actually very silly! his little “oh schnappers” is also a good example. he just doesn’t always show it or show that he cares bc he doesn’t know how to do it in a way that isn’t awkward, and the feeling of awkwardness is like his least favorite feeling in the entire world.

sorry all that to say: they are incredibly compatible and i’m making them kiss. sillies.

lowkey loved s1 Mandy (I love jane levy) and miss her vibe with Ian. But didn't mind Emma either andI'm so happy that we got the Ian and Mandy friendship bc lowkey.... Ian didn't really have friends? They discuss it in the show a bit but he's had love interests and at least he has Lip bc otherwise, once Mandy left, he had no ride or die. someone to hide a body with.

And gosh, I wish Mandy got to return, we got to know that she's okay etc. and tbh she was my fav of Lip's love interests (def better than Tami oofff don't get me started) but I don't really see them as endgame? but could've been interesting.

Like, terry's death was pretty meh in canon so imagine like.... Mandy hitting him with her car. or her and Mickey teaming up.

I just miss the Mickey and Mandy sibling bond so much and Sandy was cool but just. Not the same...

Omggg I’ve never considered Mandy and Mickey teaming up to get rid of Terry but I low key love that idea! Also tbh I would have loved if Mandy was at the funeral. She deserved to tell Terry to go fuck himself and to burn his body too. I’ve read AU fics where all the Milkovich kids go and burn the shit from their childhood home after Terry dies and just basically say “fuck you terry” and honestly they deserved that.

And true I do miss Mandy and Ian’s friendship! It was great for him to have someone outside his family and relationships.

I rly liked Emma as Mandy. I think her portrayal was more mature and darker which fits bc Mandy’s arc became a lot darker after season 1. Also in terms of Mandy and lip, idk I mean they had a super interesting dynamic and I low key loved the toxicity of it so it would’ve been cool to see more but I actually do really like Tami and think her & Lip make a lot of sense together. But seeing how they’d interact if she came back and Lip was already with Tami would’ve been v cool acc now that I think about it?? The constant wonder of what if and how they both had such a connection but he’s got a life he can’t throw away now.

But anyway bringing back Mandy and having her and Mickey (and maybe Svetlana) team up to bring down Terry omg I would’ve loved that. In a less shameless turn of events they could’ve maybe had a whole thing about framing him for something or building a case for the cops but honestly yea they should’ve hit him with their car then been each others alibi. (Now I’m having ideas of that being how the marriage certificate storyline from s10 starts 🤔🤔). And then beyond that like what would Mandy end up doing? How would Mickey react to seeing her? Kinda think if Mickey hadn’t been in prison maybe he would’ve set out to look for her in season 6, or maybe he would’ve been ok with letting her go as long as she was safe? Who knows

for marvel rn I have one active WIP called all you need to know about gwen stacy. It's very much in its infancy but it's a spiderverse based spider-gwen story and it's going to be hopefully my longest gwen story yet, not that that's really impressive everything I've written with her as the main character has been pretty short. I also have Break It Fic on the backburner; that has two chapters up and has for months now and I don't see myself going back to it anytime soon, but I do want to finish it for real! also I hope to write a fic for valenpool over the next week or so and publish it on valentine's day (get it?), should be a short fluff fic, maybe two thousand words at most. it's going to be called Dead Valentine I got the name from a convo with @waterme-stories regarding valenpool's ship name thanks again

for the witcher I have a number of incomplete fics but the only two that are still actively on my mind are the yennskier post s2 get together which only has one chapter left and an outsider POV oneshot that honestly might not get published if I don't finish it by the time s3 comes out. I have a few pages of it and it's based basically on the fact that Geralt's reputation really does live and die on Jaskier's song - so what does that look like for some random villagers in an unimportant town? I wanted it to be a spiritual successor to one of my most successful fics, in which an entire university faculty becomes far too involved in Pankratz and Vengerberg's love life, which is another outsider POV for the witcher fandom although it's a modern au and this one isn't

dc is obviously my main fandom rn and I have a bunch of projects for that! I'm still working on my before and after fic series and that has a few fics in progress. the mental health fic already has two chapters up and the final chapter has about a paragraph written, and I've also got a sequel fic nicknamed the therapy fic with no outline and about two pages written. I actually don't know if the therapy fic will actually end up seeing the light of day since the mental health fic has received lukewarm attention at best and I'd rather focus my attention on things that will actually be liked. there's also probably going to be a silly little oneshot that introduces cass to jason in the before and after universe, it's a bit of a retcon but I don't really think it matters since it's meant to be lighthearted. and if I still have any steam at all after all of that, there's also another short multichaptered fic planned for the series that focuses on damian, but that's a real question mark we have to see how I feel when I get there

I've also offhandedly mentioned my jealousy timkon au which is loosely inspired by this fic and has established timber with kon coming back into tim's life and sort of messing everything up. I like making my favs suffer idk what to tell you. it's a no capes college au with childhood friends to strangers to friends to lovers and I'm actually going to break form and there will be no cheating! I've written a lot about cheating in the past but this is going to remain in the realm of longing. there's about a page and a half written of this and I have some vague ideas of where I want it to go but I haven't even decided if I'm going for a oneshot or not. probably not but if so it'll end up my main fic for a while so I want to at least get the mental health fic and the valenpool valentine's day piece done by then

and finally I have two pieces of smallville fic I'm planning on writing, probably after I've done my lecture in april (assuming it'll get accepted but I haven't been told no in three years, so). I've actually detailed both of them already but if you missed it the first one I came up with is a post s10 slice of life fic, ignoring the arrowverse Crisis plot cause it's bullshit and clark wouldn't give up his powers, and ignoring s11 comics cause I haven't read them. the second one has a detailed outline in an ask from earlier this month and it's my fix it for lana's send off in season eight cause fuck that plotline

so yeah that's everything on my mind! obviously this isn't exactly a small amount but I'm hoping to start finishing things and stop starting them any day now (he said, lyingly)

 stargate timeline:  for maeve’s stargate verse   ( mostly so I don’t forget it  )   -  maeve is in her early 20s in season one.  she’s not meant to be involved in field work,  but she’s a genius geneticist with at least 2/3 of her doctorates.  this means that when d'ane happens,  when she does basically lose her entire life,  she’s only in her mid 20s most  (  very early s3   )… 

s1.     genius does little to compensate for the fact few view her as ready to be offered the job that she is.  her phds are convenient,   helpful even,  and scientist is sunshine  &&  shy gentleness wrapped in hesitant smiles.  she’s as far from military as she could get:   maeve was promised mysteries that would make even her mind spin…  but it’s the promise of helping people that really gets her to stick around.  what’s the use of brains if they’re used for only theory?

s2.     curious and brilliant,  she sees patterns before almost anyone else  &&  her specialities make her a welcome addition to any of the teams she occasionally finds herself alongside.  she’s not a soldier but she’s slowly finding her place,  the goa'uld threat isn’t enough to extinguish the light in her veins.  she’s doing her best to be useful,  to be what’s wanted from her.

s3.    early season.  the thing of nightmares comes true when a mission goes wrong.   officially,  maeve is missing,  and classified files have her as another loss in the battle.  doctor donovan becomes no more than host to parasitic beast.

s4.     they say the host is gone,  but a brain like maeve’s will be stuck remembering every detail of the hell her time as d'ane entailed.

s5.     she returns moderately early / middle of the season.  when freshly back but she won’t have aged over her time as a ‘host’.  she does solidly ignore this though and is generally always three steps from a shutdown.  her work,  in the end,  is all she allows herself:  when she reaches out to her parents,  grief filled shell breaks their hearts too much to see her as the daughter they lost.

 she doesn’t reach out to the friends who still believe her missing.  for all her efforts to push herself back to work as soon as she can,   her return is marked by daniel’s passing  &&   the ice she has to cling to so she may survive.

s6.   she gets on with her work,  world and life pushed far away -   if she stops,  she’ll have to mourn,  and she can’t imagine ever being able to stop if she starts.

s7.   daniel returns,  but he’s not at all who he was.  janet dies.  sardonic humour and subtle smiles do little to hide the fact woman hasn’t slept well in years   (   she can’t go,  can’t surrender,  she has too much to atone for  ).

she has two possible stories from here:  she stays,  and then by the end of the show we have  -

s8/s9.    she’s starting to work more with various SG-teams,  strongly against when she’s occasionally offered the option to join one of them for longer than her stints.  her skill for the work,  her passion for riddles,  even the steadiness of her hands don’t always hide how she is struggling to keep hold of who she wants to be.  choosing sunshine,  choosing hope,  is a hard path to walk.

s10.  she's increasingly considered a member of one of the SG-teams  ( SG-15 )  maeve is still mostly focussed on the science,  the human element,  of what they do.  as long as she’s useful,  she can process the guilt of just existing.  it helps that the ori threat is enough to keep her from worrying about anything else.  it helps that she’s learning to let people in fully again.

or at the end of s7 she decides to leave for atlantis,  but that’s a different ending.

Do you think Burzek will end up together before the season ends?

Realistically no, for two reasons:

One) everything they've said about 9x17 does not inspire faith that they're going to enter a relationship any time soon (or get any nearer to defining things which I'm HOPING isn't actually gonna happen because we and they deserve more than that).

And two) the most likely reason to why; simply put I don't think Eid had any intention to stop dragging us over the coals, and while I do actually have faith that Gwen will, it's not just gonna be a case of oh now he's no longer showrunner, let's get these two together in this season (when quite likely Eid never had that as a overall season projection). So even if now Gwen has getting burzek to actually be defined and together as a goal, it won't happen by the end of this season.

HOWEVER, I am very optimistic about it happening in season ten, and early season ten at that. I mean this optimism heavily relies on how Wednesday's episode goes. And it also relies on me choosing the most favourable opinion of the showrunner and writers, which I know is more risky then me betting all my money in a poker game. But I'm hoping Gwen isn't going to be as malicious to burzek shippers as Eid was, and that she understands that we need progress (which I'm fairly certain she does, judging on 9x14 and 9x15).

What I'm hoping out of tomorrow's episode isn't them getting together (although don't get me wrong I would ofc die if that happened, but the articles have pretty much said it's not) but that they (realistically and correctly) move on from the kidnapping and outlines more rules between this thing they're doing. Just them having an honest talk. And honestly I think it should just be about securing Adam's right to Makayla no matter what happens between the two of them. Like if they think, optimistically, it may take a few years for them to heal and grow enough to be romantically entangled that Adam doesn't have to choose to stay because otherwise he fears losing his daughter. Because I think that needs to happen before they get together (I mean it didn't *need* to happen but the show continues to add obstacles so they've made this being the most logical obstacle to tackle first so I hope to god that they actually do and shows that they're not just making drama for the sake of drama, that they at least care about resolving it). I also really want them to get into therapy although I'm not counting on that since Kim basically died and the show didn't have her go, BUT I so hope they do-- or at least have them go to family counseling bc I think more than anything, that's what they need right now! And honestly if they end the season with this being the burzek status quo at the moment, I'd be happy. Not completely, bc I still think a lot of this drama was pointless, but happy.

ALTHOUGH saying all of this, I can actually see them having a burzek kiss/get together in the finale (similar to 1x15!) And then having season ten start with them together, happy and adjusting to this new normal. (Honestly I have an ideal s10 outline in my head and I'm clowning so hard but Idc).

Either way, I'm so hoping 9x17 will go well. Especially bc burzek has shown that they can communicate so this shouldn't be as big of a deal as other stuff. But also mainly because I cannot and I mean CANNOT, have my birthday ruined and I can guarantee you if it doesn't go well I'm gonna be super depressed and I'll be so fucking mad if I am.

The Winchesters might take place before the days of Supernatural, but given that there are no rules in the Supernatural universe — time travel, time loops, and extremely powerful snaps exist — there's a chance that a familiar face or two could show up in the 1970s.

When asked whether they'd like to bring some of the Supernatural family to the new show, executive producers Jensen and Danneel Ackles both said a very quick "yes." Although, Danneel immediately shut down the idea of Sister Jo — the character she played — coming back. "From my understanding, her vessel lived in the 2000s," Danneel says. "But we have a lot of people who were immortal. Ruth [Connell] could definitely come back. Who else?"

Jensen's immediate response is Chuck (and we already know Rob Benedict is ready and willing). But he continues, "[Showrunner] Robbie [Thompson] and us have talked and if there is any opportunity to bring anybody back from the mothership, we will absolutely do so. We will write to that. We have names that are on the table of like, 'How can we get to this [person in a way] that makes sense?'" (Jensen's already mentioned at least one idea about getting all the Johns together.)

And yet, if it doesn't make sense to bring a certain character back, there's one other way the show could still get some familiar faces to come play. "I think the fans will be cool if we bring an actor that played a certain famous character on the show to come and do something different," Jensen says. "We were recycling guest stars by the dozens after season 8 because Vancouver's only so big and there's only so many people in the talent pool. I think if we do that with fan-favorite actors that played fan-favorite characters, I feel like we're safe there."

Danneel adds, "Why else do you make a show if you can't work with your friends? If that is at all possible, it's happening."

So basically, if I get what he's trying to say, Jensen and Co are planning to bring back "fan favorite" actors and having them play completely different roles than they did in spn just to get them on the screen and try and bring in og viewers? Here's the thing Jensen - that worked for throw away guest actors who people might recognize but don't have an attachment to. If 'guest nurse A' from an ep in s2 plays 'detective B' in an ep in s10 people don't really care. But even that got tricky sometimes with people who played slightly more memorable guest spots - like the kid from bugs playing Samandriel. But that is going to be confusing for fans if you have someone really recognizable in the spn universe playing some random character... people are going to wonder if its some fake out orr bait and switch. Like you can't have Mark P come in and play some random side character because he is so strongly imbedded in spn as Lucifer and it would make people wonder if its just lucifer pretending to be whoever he's playing (even though the vessel Nick would have been a child then). But hey, at least Danneel admits that Anael shouldn't come back... (I know they'll shove her in in another role though..)

This one really just kinda shocked me (although it's very on brand for TW):

So Jensen is publicly admitting that they are writing to the og actors/characters rather than to the story?? If they had faith in their story, their cast, their production then they would write the show and if opportunities came up they would call in these actors they hoped to use. They should NOT be planning what "fan favorites" they want to put in and then writing the story just to get to the point where they can shoehorn them in. This is just bad storytelling. It shows they have no faith in the cast and they feel like they need to rely on "fan favorites". And can I be honest? I don't know that Jensen actually knows who the fan favorites are... He's already shown he can't read the room when it comes to spn fans and that he thinks that his opinions are universal (for example - HE loves John so everyone must as well, HE wants a John and Mary story so everyone else should too). I think what he means by "fan favorites" are his friends and people who do/will suck up to him. That's all.

The only reason to bring back Chuck is to tell us that lol-prequel is happening in an AU lifted from his A03 account filled with "what if" prompts. 

 Jensen (and Danneel) are just saying a whole lot of nothing that will only confuse the normies and infuriate the OG fans. Because Jensen (and Danneel) got nothing to offer since Robbie is making up shit as he goes, as most writers do.

Yeah it’s a super bad idea to bring back “fan favorite” square actors just to force fit them through round hole.  The more they talk, the more TW sounds like the cancelled Strange Adventures that Jensen was allegedly supposed to star in.  That show was going to be episodic and "feature characters from across the DC canon that would use each episode to explore close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans."  The way Jensen ~explained TW, it’s going to be a cheap knockoff of Strange Adventures.

Besides, fan-favorites are 8 out of 10 times producer’s favorites, not necessarily actual favorites of the fandom.  Jensen knows this and since he has the producer title, he can bring in his favorites, which is why the SPN side extras are kissing the ground he walks on.

-his first response to comfort/fear is a hug, a hand on shoulder, etc.

-and when you think abt it it makes sense

-cuz first of all just look at his parents, ed and edna

-the most affectionate and loving ppl on this goddam planet

-they showered him w/ undying love and support his whole life, ofc this kid’s gonna turn out the same

-but then if you also tie in his abandonment issues and fear of being alone and it makes even more sense

-we find out abt those mainly in s12 when he talks abt his birth parents to unagami, but looking at what happened to him in s6 when he was alone for so long on the misfortunes keep and nya dying to top it off...

-he lost all his friends not once, but twice (and that’s not including all the separate times the ninja have died) plus he feels like his birth parents abandoned him, w/o him even rlly knowing for sure what happened

-so if she wasn’t used to saying it growing up, why would she immediately jump to it now that she’s a teenager/young adult? even w someone she does love

-she expresses her love in what she does and says.

-the main example i can think of atm is this

-jay’s freaking out abt catching her for the dance move and with 100% confidence she just says “i trust you” and then fucking yeets herself at him

-there’s other examples of this w the others too

-she builds their mechs and vehicles, back in the earlier seasons she always made sure the boys were taken care of when they got back from missions, she was always the cavalry, she sacrificed herself for jay back in s6 when they were at the lighthouse, and kai mentions she’s always taken care of him

-not to mention how she adopted lloyd back when he first came in

-we’ve seen him and pixal spend time working together in the workshop, he enjoys family meals and cooking for everyone, he’s been shown to not like it when the others occasionally fight, and an overall loving guy

-he prbly doesn’t realize it, but he’s the glue that holds everyone together

-we all know kai is a very cocky and prideful person. he’s always showing off, flaunting his good looks, and can be sometimes arrogant

-ofc under all that is a very kind and loving big brother and friend

-but bc of this he’d not only love getting gifts from fans and the others, but giving them as well

-kai, like nya, didn’t have a good childhood

-he’s not an emotional person and he was never used to saying “i love you,” instead he had to take care of his sister while trying to run a business

-his way of showing love is giving things for his family

-there’re aren’t many instances of this in the show, but the gift giving doesn’t necessarily have to be smthg physical

-he’s sacrificed himself for the others on several accounts, he offers advice when needed, giving pep talks, helping raise lloyd, he even helped jay propose to nya, those things can be considered as gifts too

Some thoughts after watching 11x06 "On the Inside". I'll put it beneath a break because there's more than I thought to my mindless rambling.

Okay so they're going with a straight horror movie intro but skipping the usual 'we're having such a good time out here in the woods...wait, something it out here too'

Both LR and KC do a really good terrified for their lives

Also have to say Virgil really seems to have stepped up since we met him because dude can actually take out walkers now. Good job, sir. Never stop learning.

More of Leah walking around amoungst a group of people and having no real reason to be there or contribute anything to the scene. 🙄

Damn, Hondo! Stop pulling at Frost's nails! I can't rip half mine off at work without feeling like Hershel when Rick chopped his leg. Fingers and toes always make thigs worse.

The conversation beneath the conversation between Daryl and Frost is spot on and super interesting.

Daryl's like 'look...I'm going to have to chop your finger off but it's for a good reason. Gonna save your life and who knows, maybe one of these weirdos has a Govenor closet somewhere and they'll let you take it home with you.'

Plus him taking off the vest was WAY more entralling than it needed to be, but I'm a woman with eyes so don't judge me. 👀😍(Enthralling? yup, that's what we'll go with)

It's a definite sign Daryl's not all team Reapers because he's basically taking off/hiding who he really is to fit in with his crazy ex-girlfriend's new posse.

Carol strolling in to find Kelly stuck in the mud with her casual "need some help" is perfection. I actually lol'd.

WTH is with this episode, they really out here trying to start a bunch of new ships or something? I'm down for Vonnie.

He's so into you, Connie. Who else is gonna keep talking to you knowing you can't hear them but needing to vocalize how much more important they see you to themselves.

Oh, come on...he's said her name in this ep more times than anyone has in the last season. He's trying to rival Daryl for saying Carol's name in s10.

So the jaundice family watched The Ring too many times and think this is how all the cool kids act in horror flicks. All they keep saying is 'hungry'; Connie, Virgil, someone get them a Mars bar and it'll be done.

A+ fight put up by Virgil. He's been taking some classes during the lockdowns to better himself.

The Reapers are HORRIBLE military folk. How do ya'll not see Maggie & co leaving when you have people on the perimeter for the sole purpose of finding runners?! Do not hire them. 1 star on Yelp.

Yup I'm all over Vonnie. That "together" stuff was by far the shippiest thing we've seen all season.

walker guts trick again: the express version

why do I feel like they could do a mini spin off of just a little war going on between the walkers and those jaundice mo-fos? Then one of the walkers falls for a crawler girl but her family thinks he's from the wrong side of the yellow house and don't like how he thinks he's better because he's taller than all of them.

Kelly found Connie! So happy this storyline ended with the 2 people the arc was truly about; the 2 sisters finding each otherafter years of the show hating siblings.

Now can we finish with Carol's self-hatred stuff and let her heal? We know Daryl is gonna be finished with his "gotta save 'em all" issues soon so it would be fantastic if they could finally be on the same baggage free playing field. Just a thought Kang.

Overall I thought it was a good episode. Only a few things I would nitpick ie. limited Carol, cheesy music during some of the haunted house bits, and the reapers need to go back to basic training and learn some stuff and thangs.

Ofc the spoilers beforehand were blown way out of proportion though I'm not surprised. I didn't go in expecting to see what was foretold and thankfully the spirit Gods prevailed again in defeating the overreaction we go through EVERY episode.

Sam and Dean Breakups, Part One: Voluntary

Sorted by how much longer I think they should have lasted. 

For all the noise about Sam and Dean splitting up, I have only counted seven (7) significant voluntary breakups, defined as times when either Sam or Dean chooses to leave. 

1.11 (Sam’s off to CA to find John): about two days, less than an episode. While I don’t think it needed to be significantly longer, as the core of the show is still rooted in Sam and Dean establishing their chemistry, woulda been fun to watch Sam’n’Meg California adventures!

9.10-9.12 (post-Gadreel breakup): two weeks, one or two episodes depending how you count it. This was obviously way too soon for them to be back together for Sam’s tastes--but because s9 spends the following eight or so episodes emphasizing this, I am totally fine with this choice. The tangible tension in how Sam clearly doesn’t want to be around Dean is A+, and it gets lingered on.

5.02-5.04 (post-Cage-opening breakup): anywhere between a few weeks and three months, two episodes. This is about the right length in universe, but I’d have really appreciated a few more Sam’n’Lucifer scenes while Sam is still on his own, pleaaaase and thank you. More exploration of Sam alone dealing with that, and with Apocalyptic fallout in  general, would be a huge win. (I’ve never been a huge fan of 5.04, because Where Is The Sam Content?)

10.22-10.23 (Mark of Cain!Dean): about five days, one-ish episode. You  know, call me crazy, but I think we needed more time to watch Sam dealing with Dean’s penchant for child murder. Like in that deleted scene of him mopping blood off the library floor.  

4.21-4.22 (Sam’s off to kill Lilith): about two days, one episode. I want at least one more episode of Sam and Dean bitterly at odds--I want one more episode in which I could sweetly savor the delicacy of 4.21′s ideological and emotional conflict, before 4.22 swanned in to tidy up the problem with a big ol’ “Dean’s Right Ackshually, and also it was just ~~manipulation~~.” Kinda undercuts the legitimate grievances in 4.21.

9.23-10.03 (Demon!Dean): more than a month, three episodes. Sam torturing random demons to try to find Dean = meh; Sam and Cas teamups that involve Cas nearly dying and Sam’s shoulder getting wrecked = YES PLEASE, we should have gotten that episode. Re Demon!Dean himself: I’m going to go more into detail about this in my Part Two post, about involuntary breakups--but basically, if s10 had really wanted to make Demon/MoC Dean a significant meditation on Dean’s psyche/the pieces of him, they really, really should have pulled a Season 6. That is, they should have kept Demon!Dean himself around, and conspicuously different from Normal!Dean, for a hefty chunk of the season. The show did itself a disservice by pulling back from him so soon, only to half-heartedly reignite him in MoC!Dean in ways that mostly involved murder and staring into mirrors (notably, things Dean already does on the regular). 

7.06-7.07 (Amy debacle): a week and a half, NOT EVEN A FULL EPISODE. this is a CRIME committed specifically against me.  Season 7 is all about the deconstruction of the Winchesters, and how better to prolong and exacerbate that than to keep them apart??? Let Sam retreat to the desert, furious about Amy and hallucinating vividly. Let Dean bury himself in lonely resentment and alcoholism, without his car or his friends or his brother. Let them be apart! Give me the early s7 episodes of Sam dealing with Hallucifer utterly alone--alone not because circumstances put him there, but because he cannot stand to be around Dean. Show him forcing himself to choose over and over again between a rock and a hard place. Make his grief and betrayal war with his suffering, with his inability to distinguish fact and fiction; give me an episode of Sam vs. Sam, Sam gaslighting himself. S7 HALLUCIFER SPINOFF WHEN.

aaaahahahahahhhhhhahahh the worst thing Sam ever said to dean. 9.13, The Purge:

Dean: About what you said the other day.

Sam: I thought it didn’t bother you.

Dean: You know Sam, I saved your hide back there. I saved your hide at that church — in the hospital. I may not think things all the way through but when I do, it’s because it’s the right thing. I’d do it again.

Sam: And that is the problem. You think you’re my savior, my brother, the hero. You swoop in and even when you mess up you think what you’re doing is worth it because you’ve convinced yourself you’re doing more good than bad... but you’re not. Kevin’s dead, Crowley’s in the wind, we’re no closer to beating this angel thing, please tell me, what is the upside to me being alive?

Dean: Are you kidding me? You and me, fighting the good fight together.

Sam: Just once be honest with me, you didn’t save me for me. You did it for you.

Dean: What are you talking about?

Sam: I was ready to die, I was ready. I should have died. But you, you didn’t want to be alone. That’s what this boils down to, you can’t stand the thought of being alone. I’ll give you this much, you are certainly willing to do the sacrifice, as long as you’re not the one being hurt.

Dean: Alright, you want to be honest, if the situation was reversed, and I was dying, you’d do the same thing.

Sam: No Dean, I wouldn’t. Same circumstances, I wouldn’t. I’m heading to bed.

(bolding mine, because we’re gonna talk about those words...)

The problem in the Winchester Codependency is this. We’ve talked about it for years-- the fact that yes, they’re brothers, but that Dean also still can’t help but feel “parental” toward Sam, because that’s the role he was forced into as long as he can remember. And as many glimpses of this as Sam has had, and as many small (and sometimes large) moments of insight into Dean, he still either refuses to understand this, or blocks it out, or assumes it’s all handled until the next time this issue rears its ugly head again and it’s like Sam developed amnesia again about why Dean defaults to the Bossy Parent role.

I mean, this is not to discount Dean’s own amnesia over the fact that Sam does NOT have the same hangups about feeling “parental” toward Dean in return, because to Dean the role of Brother and Parent are so tangled up together he can’t always tell what’s what. 

And Kevin... he’s not dead because of Sam-- even though he enjoys putting the blame for it on himself. He’s dead because Gadreel felt BETRAYED by Dean, even though he himself had been betrayed for the better part of the entire history of time... so like... there’s much bigger issues here, but Sam reduces them all down to himself. I mean, Dean also blames himself for everything a lot of the time, but not when it’s in the attempt to save the people he cares about.

The whole “we’ll always try to save each other” that is a BIG part of Dean’s personal definition of what it means to be family on a very basic level... Sam just basically stomped on that and told him it was worthless. And the painful irony is that by 10.03, Sam gets this. He finally put on his grownup pants and did something far more horrific than Dean asking an angel he thought he could trust (based on Cas’s word about Ezekiel being a good soldier, and that angel not completely lying about his identity) to save Sam’s life, and then Sam effectively being held hostage by that angel-- which directly hurt Cas and Dean both, as well. So like... at least Dean is trying to keep the bigger picture in mind here.

And Dean has already punished himself for this in direct ways that Sam has also watched first-hand. He’s expressed how he feels he’s poison and went off and took the Mark of Cain, effectively sacrificing himself to spare Sam and Cas and everyone else from Abaddon. So that bit Sam says there in the second bolded segment? Is potentially the worst thing he’d ever said to Dean up to that point. Because Dean himself has sacrificed more than almost everyone else on this show combined-- his own identity, his own happiness, everything he’s ever wanted in life since he was four years old, his own soul in exchange for Sam’s, and most horrifically his own LIFE in a future where he FINALLY had a chance to be free and live unburdened by mechanism that caused their repeated need to make these awful sacrifices in the first place. They’d finally knocked the monkey wrench out of the cosmic gears, unseated Chuck, and then... for some reason Dean thinks one more final big sacrifice for Sam is what “was supposed to” happen? NO. No, no, fuck that sideways with a container ship.

Yes, Sam repents of all of this in s10 and goes WAY over the top on his revenge mission, because he thinks Dean is dead and that some rando demon was just using his body... at the beginning he doesn’t think Dean CAN be saved. 10.03 is the beginning of Sam’s redemption from this.

And this is why 15.20 is not only implausible to me, but outright offensive. They both struggled horrifically with these things and would eventually forgive and overcome them, only to fall right back into it just in time for the finale.

Yes, Sam’s issues with bodily autonomy and possession throughout the series are at play here, too. And that only makes things worse. Dean will only truly begin to understand that after 13.23, when he will-- without hesitation-- once again make the sacrifice himself to save the people he cares about.

I understand both of their perspectives here, but heck it’s super hard not to feel angry and hurt by Sam’s words. I mean, HOW MANY TIMES has Dean been perfectly willing to be the sacrifice for Sam’s sake, and the ONE TIME he made a choice for Sam-- bearing in mind that Gadreel was also playing ALL of them, and using Dean’s face to secure the Yes from Sam-- Sam can’t let it go. I mean, I’ve written about the “who’s to blame for this” argument and how it just goes right back to the start of creation and puts it all on Chuck for locking up Amara. In this circumstance specifically, though, this is at least PARTLY Dean’s personal guilt over “failing” that first trial way back in 8.14. Sam was never the one who was supposed to “sacrifice” himself to close up Hell. Dean even argued with him that they would find another Hellhound to kill, and Sam busted out the Power of Positive Thinking BS about wanting to SURVIVE the trials when Dean was looking at them as a death sentence. Because they always WERE a death sentence, and no amount of “golly I’d really like to live anyway though” was gonna change that. The entire POINT of what Dean did was trying to CORRECT what he felt was a pointless sacrifice of Sam on the altar of saving everyone else.

So yeah, I hate this bit here. :’D

Because as I hinted at in the previous paragraph there... THIS WAS ALWAYS CHUCK’S STORY. That one brother would have to be sacrificed so the other could live. Because that’s the story of him and Amara. Only one of them could rule over creation. Only Chuck could remain free to create the universe he wanted unhindered, and the story of his universe as told and retold through his own creations was his own self-justification for that original crime. And the final episode of Supernatural gave him exactly that, in the stupidest possible way. It was “we can’t have nice things or a happy life, only one’s death so the other can be free.” The irony was that they weren’t truly free. Dean was just ~dead~ and alone and never sought out what he never got to have in life. Sam abandoned everything he’d grown to know about himself to live a half-life without any real satisfaction, until he finally died, too. It’s just... depressing AF. And it all feels rooted in Chuck’s basic plot rather than truly winning for Free Will and humanity.

I typed on this so long that 9.14 ended, with Kevin’s admonition to them both that they stop behaving like that, since he’d ben watching them be petty from the veil for months. Dean was ready to talk to Sam, but Sam had already turned his back and walked away, completely convinced of his own righteousness in this matter. And at this point in the series I just kinda want to yell at him... >.>

More on Light Rays and Primrose

These are some more observations, mostly from @wdway​, about the TWB coda and some symbolic possibilities. We’ve been especially talking about the “V” a lot lately, so you’ll see more discussions of that moving forward. Take it away, @wdway​!

Guys, I want to throw out a couple of ideas about the twb Coda. I was wondering if the "V" project stood for the French having two teams of scientists working on a (?) cure. Team Violet and Team Primrose. That reminded me that awhile back, probably a year, when I was re-watching s4e1, 30 Days, I was thinking about the pig's name being Violet and how there is another meaning other than the flower. Violet could also stand for Violet Rays, or Ultraviolet Rays.

I'm thinking of all the light symbolism around Beth at Grady, but also the sun symbolism we have always associated with her. There is also the coda.

Well, if violet is a flower with a different meaning, could Primrose also be something different. Yes, it could.

Primrose Oil is very interesting. Tptb opened our thinking at the end of the TWB series that the scientists should look at more natural/nature base solutions by looking at mushrooms/fungi. So why not herbal/plant-based remedies?

The woman in the Coda was part of Team Violet. It was Team Primrose that was in Ohio.

In s10e1, Lines We Cross, Eugene wanted to salvage as much as he could from the satellite that has fallen and started the wildfire. Luke came over and asked Eugene about radiation. I always thought that was an odd little scene, and it must mean something. I think it has to do with tying into radiation ultraviolet rays.

I have no idea if what I've suggested here really has anything to do with the show, possible treatments or cures, but I did want to put it out here and hopefully spark some different ideas.

I forgot to mention that the evening primrose oil supplement is also thought to be a blood thinner.

I just thought of the scene where Edwards and Beth are on the roof of Grady, and it looked like they were drying out some type of petals. Who knows?

The Violet mention as something that hints of radiation I can wholeheartedly get behind. And if you look at it, there are a lot of electromagnetic radiation clues happening on the show. There’s the UV radiation, absolutely agree that Violet the pig could be part of it.

Interestingly, UV radiation is used in sterilization of lab equipment, etc. It has the capacity to kill pathogens under the right circumstances. You can get little UV light devices if you like to go hiking off the beaten track, so that you can drink water that’s not safe unless it’s sterilized.

So, does that mean the radiation references in TWD are about sterilization of water? It could be, but at the same time, the technology could also be weaponized. I’m still not much closer to cracking the code regarding these clues, but I’m also keeping an eye on radiation hints because that’s basically what all (at least many) types of communication technology are about.

It’s electromagnetic radiation. Radio waves, visible light, infra-red, ultra Violet etc. Remember when Eugene was on the radio with Rosita in s10. She asked if they should talk on the radio later, Eugene replied “are radio waves sinusoidal?” (Yes, they are).

Also, in 7x12 we could see the letters E and R on the ride where Rick had his death fake out. E and R could mean Electromagnetic Radiation. I have more about this in a notebook somewhere, but I don’t think it’s anything groundbreaking. 

I never fully figure out what the symbolism was about, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was about some sort of cure/treatment/vaccine on one hand, and possibly about weaponizing it (think nukes, for instance) on the other. But mostly, I still don’t know what it’s about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When Did Dean Fall In Love With Cas?

tl;dr: S11

I’ve wanted to talk about this since the show ended and the Spanish dub that broke Tumblr came out. So, when did Dean Winchester fall in love with Castiel?

This is entirely my opinion of course, and I know there are some people that will say it was right away or that it never happened at all, but I wanted to put my thoughts out there so other people could tell me their thoughts, too. I’ll probably get off on some tangents here and there, so feel free to send me any Destiel thoughts you’ve got.

Also, it’s worth noting that, to me, there’s a difference between falling in love and actually being in love. I mean, if you’ve fallen in love with someone, every point in your relationship has been a stepping stone to that point, so I guess it’s all abstract, but still. Hence, S11 being my answer to this question.

Keep in mind I’m doing this without the benefit of a recent rewatch, so I may miss some behaviors from Dean that would change a few things.

I don’t think it’s that big of a secret that Dean attached himself to Cas, like, right away. I mean, the dude never talks about his emotions, and yet, it took eight episodes of Cas being around for Dean to break down in front of him and talk about his fears. It’s almost like you could say that’s because they were always meant to fall for each other.

However, I don’t really the think the process of falling in love with Cas had started yet. I do think that Dean cared about Cas, but I don’t think it was anything extremely special. Reason being: it was the literal end times and Dean didn’t have that type of time. That, and I think there’s something to be said for being raised a certain way and believing certain things about yourself that affects how long it takes for you to notice that something has changed. So, yeah. I don’t think Cas had been around long enough at this point for Dean to start feeling anything more than kinship with him.

That’s not to say, though, that Dean didn’t subconsciously find Cas hot or get the warm fuzzies sometimes because:

S6-7

So, this era is weird because I do think something had begun to change in how Dean saw Cas, but I don’t think he got to fully begin the process of falling in love with him because: a.) Cas betrayed them and b.) Sam’s head was broken.

I’m gonna say something rude now: I think a lot of the Destiel moments in the beginning of S6 were born of Dean needing Castiel’s abilities as an angel and not of needing Cas. For example, Dean calling on Cas to help with the Staff of Moses or with Soulless!Sam. He was usually pretty demanding and sometimes curt with Cas and got irritable when Cas couldn’t help.

However, I think that Cas always being there despite his battle in Heaven began to shift Dean’s feelings toward him. I do think this change was almost imperceptible, but you can see Dean showing more and more concern for Cas as S6 progresses. Like this:

This is the primary reason I think Dean got so defensive of Cas when Bobby and Sam started suggesting that Cas was working with Crowley. It’s also why he got so hurt when he found out that Bobby and Sam were right.

Here’s my super abstract and vague take on it: he’d started feeling romantic emotions for Cas, but as soon as Cas’s betrayal was revealed, it got replaced with pain. Basically, Dean almost started to fall for Cas in S6, and then the Purgatory storyline interrupted it.

And then Cas died. Which didn’t help.

Here we enter S7, which has fuck all for Destiel content beyond the first two episodes—until Cas comes back. I know some people are going to say not to gloss over the trench coat thing, and fair enough. I think the keeping of the trench coat was akin to Dean trying to hold onto what he did feel for Cas, obviously not consciously. Almost as though Dean could tell he’d lost something special when Cas died, and not just in losing Cas, but in losing part of himself, a part that he didn’t know existed yet. I don’t consider the trench coat to be a sign that Dean was falling in love with Cas but a sign that he was about to or that he could’ve. Is that weak? Whatever.

Now, I do think that some shit got shaken loose when Dean saw Cas again because, for all intents and purposes, he should’ve been pissed. But instead he was... whatever this is:

I still, more or less, think that he was too preoccupied with Sam to really begin falling in love with Cas. I think that’s clear to see in how he treated Cas after he came back into the story for the final battle with the Leviathan. He did give the whole “I’d rather have you” speech, but all the stuff before that was more along the lines of “Nobody cares that you’re broken, Cas! Clean up your mess!” So, yeah.

S8

Okay, so this is where the Purgatory stuff comes in. In the words of the great John Mulaney, “we don’t have time to unpack all of that,” but this is where I believe Dean started falling in love with Cas.

Dean told Sam that Purgatory felt pure because he could only focus on the fight at all times... but he still had the emotional availability to worry about and search for Cas, so...

If I had to pick an exact moment, I’d say somewhere around here:

And thus, rather than just keeping a trench coat when he lost Cas, Dean literally rewired his own memories because he would rather think that he left Cas behind than think that Castiel chose to leave him.

From here, we can start seeing Dean paying attention to Cas more, noticing when he’s not being himself, and more than that, worrying about him in a more personal way. For instance, when Dean insists that Cas talk to him about what’s bothering him in “Hunteri Heroici.” Not to mention, Dean becomes a lot more emotionally vulnerable regarding his feelings for Cas. One example would be when he insists that he didn’t abandon Cas in Purgatory. Another would be, of course:

I would also mark this season as the season Dean’s prayers to Cas become more emotional and, at times, cathartic, as though he’s confiding in Cas. In “Remember the Titans,” for example, Dean prays to Cas to ask him to look out for Sam; the scene reads like Dean is asking for help but is, in equal measure, asking for Cas. This is also the first season an adversary pokes at Dean and Cas’s relationship in a way that specifically targets Dean and his feelings about Cas rather than Cas’s feelings about Dean as it had been before; this would be when Naomi says “You’re hoping Castiel will return to you.”

S9-S10

Well, these seasons are complicated to say the least because of Gadreel and the Mark of Cain. I don’t think, at this point, Dean ever stops feeling what he’s feeling for Cas. However, I do think that a lot of the hiccups throughout S9 and S10 made Dean step away from those feelings.

Of course, Dean is still stressing about Cas 24/7 in the beginning of S9 what with Cas being human, Cas being hunted, Cas dying, Cas working at a Gas-n-Sip—you know, drama. I think when Gadreel said that Cas needed to stay away if Dean wanted Sam to be healed, Dean had to let what he was feeling for Cas go—not that that means he stopped feeling it, mind you. No, I don’t think Dean consciously went, “Well, guess I’m done falling for this dude,” but I think he knew somewhere in his heart that it wasn’t the time.

Now, the Mark of Cain. The storyline that put the characters down on the page once and left them stagnant and unchanging until it was resolved. Now, as you might imagine, slowly turning into a demon that wants nothing but death would put a damper on any relationship. Finding Destiel in the B season for S9 and throughout S10 is hard. Especially on Dean’s end. 

There are moments when you can tell that Dean’s feelings for Cas are still there, and I would say, developing slowly, like the cheeseburger date. Probably the biggest Destiel moment in the entire Mark of Cain stretch is when Dean nearly kills Cas but resists, despite the Mark’s hold on him.

That’s really it, though. No backwards movement, but barely anything trending the opposite way, either.

S11

This is the Big Season™, the one I believe Dean fell in love with Cas in. Now, obviously, it isn’t like Dean lost the Mark, and boom, fell in love with Cas. Plus, there’s the whole pull-to-Amara thing. However, I don’t think falling in love necessarily has to be a big moment; I think it can just happen, and I think that’s what happened with Dean. At some point between the start of this season and Cas being released from Lucifer’s possession, Dean fell in love with Cas.

That being said—if I was really reaching for a moment—I wouldn’t say it happened during a happy scene. I’d say Dean fell in love with Cas when he lost him.

I know that sounds weird, that Dean didn’t fall in love with Cas completely until he realized Cas had been possessed by Lucifer, but in my head, it fits. I think it’s because Dean is so emotionally closed off and tries not to let his emotions show if he can help it that it took knowing that Cas was gone for that last switch to flip in his heart.

So, now Dean is in love with Cas, but Cas is Lucifer. I’d say this has something to do with the fact that, even though Dean is supposed to be attached to Amara, he still calls out for Cas even though Amara is right in front of him.

Considering the fact that Cas comes back in the literal last episode—at least, that’s when Dean realizes he’s back—there isn’t a whole hell of a lot of time to see how being in love with Cas has changed Dean. We do get the “you’re our brother, Cas” scene, but seeing as how that’s pretty inconsistent with everything that comes afterward, let’s just chalk that one up to bad writing and/or Dean being dense.

S12

Alright, so my post should be done, yeah? I’ve answered the question I’ve set out to answer. However, there’s still more to talk about here. When did Dean first sense that what he felt for Cas was different? When did he have an inclination that it was romantic? When did he know for sure?

That’s why we’re here in S12. Now, S12 is the most Destiel-heavy season in the entire series. In my opinion, while it does have many of the best Destiel scenes, it doesn’t have the best Destiel scene. However, as far as number of moments, S12 takes it.

This is where we really get to see how being in love with Cas has changed Dean. Realistically, I think this has a lot to do with S12 being the beginning of the Dabb era because this era marked a change in tone for both Castiel’s character and his relationship with Dean. Dean began to worry about Cas a lot more frequently and, as a result, got mad at him a lot more, too. I see S12 as the season that Dean moved away from simply being worried about losing Cas to being terrified of losing Cas. And that translated into anger any time Castiel put himself in danger. For example, killing Billie. Any other time, the threat of losing Cas translated itself into fear, like when Cas nearly died from being stabbed with the Lance of Michael.

Of course, the mixtape is also in this season, which is another example of how being in love with Cas has affected Dean. I could probably make an entirely seperate and very long post regarding Destiel in S12, but the general idea is that Dean’s newly found love for Cas made a big difference in how he treated Cas.

S13

Alright, S13 stands outs to me because I believe this is when Dean first realized that Cas meant something more to him than a friend and that he felt differently about him than he did about his family. Again, I don’t think that Dean actually thought those exact words, but I think his heart knew them to be true even if he mind didn’t. Reason being: Cas had just died. Which is the first time Castiel has died since Dean fell in love with him. Dean knew he needed Cas, in a way he hadn’t really realized it before. Which is why he demands that Chuck bring him back.

Then Cas comes back, and it’s like Dean forgets what hopelessness and misery are because Cas is his “big win.” After this, honestly, there isn’t much else by way of emotional development for Dean regarding Cas, but I see that as a good thing. It’s a sign that, though Dean hasn’t realized it yet, being in love with Cas is comfortable for him. There are still expressions of concern for Cas’s wellbeing throughout the season, but mostly, we just get to see Dean be content with Cas.

S14

Alright, S14 a.) mostly saw Dean’s feelings much in the same place as they were in S13 and b.) just kidding because Dean tells Cas that he’s dead to him in this season.

To be fair, if we’re talking Destiel, there’s more of it on Castiel’s end this season than there is on Dean’s because Dean is dealing with Michael. There are a couple moments that stand out to me as moments where Dean’s love for Cas comes through: when Cas asks Dean if his plan to trap himself in the Ma’lak Box means that they’re supposed to say goodbye and when Dean confides in Cas about how he’s handling keeping Michael trapped. In the former scene especially, I think it’s clear to see how much the idea of saying goodbye to Cas affects Dean.

And then we get to “Absence,” which is the episode where Dean tells Cas that he’ll be dead to him if Jack killed Mary. Now, going off on a tangent here to explain how this ties into Dean being in love with Cas, let’s talk about when Dean gets mad at Cas.

When Dean gets mad at Castiel, it’s always out of pain. I think that’s a very unique effect that Cas has on Dean that no one else does, and I believe it’s because Dean gets so overwhelmed with the emotion of betrayal that all he can do is push Cas away. Why a feeling of betrayal? Well, in this case, it’s because Cas knew something was wrong with Jack and didn’t say anything. I think that, as Dean fell more and more in love with Cas, his expectations and feelings for him grew, and because of that, when he feels like he’s been let down by Cas, it turns into rage. 

When Dean walks away from Sam, it’s usually because he’s either worried or angry. With Jack, he walked away because of anger, maybe even disgust. But with Cas, it’s always pain; it’s always because Dean feels like he’s been personally betrayed in a way that has nothing to do with worrying about Cas and everything to do with wanting to hurt Cas back. It’s almost a selfish sort of anger, which is actually a positive for Dean’s character since he rarely puts himself first.

To me, the way Dean gets mad at Cas—especially in S14—is so personal and unique that it serves as proof as to why Dean is in love with Cas. So, even though the “then you’re dead to me” line is so damaging, it’s still a result of Dean loving Cas.

S15

Last season. The hardest season by far, for a lot of reasons. I’m not going to get into the lack of closure the ending of this show gave us in terms of Dean and Castiel, and I’m not going to talk about this final season in conjunction with the Spanish dub—just what I, as an English speaker experienced in canon since that’s what was intended in the final cut—but I will talk about everything else. There’s three episodes/points I’m going to hit with this season, and I’m sure we all know them: “The Rupture,” “The Trap,” and “Despair.”

I’ve already discussed why Dean’s anger points to his being in love with Cas, but I think the important thing to note with “The Rupture” is that Dean still didn’t want to lose Cas, even in the moments when he was hurting Cas and pushing him away.

There’s still a couple questions I’ve asked that I haven’t answered yet, and one of them will be answered with “The Trap.” I think this episode—and really, the moment Cas told him he heard his prayer—marks the first time that Dean considered that his feelings might be romantic. I don’t know how clear those thoughts were or if Dean told himself he was wrong afterward, but I do think that that scene was the beginning of possibility for Dean and Cas. Had they had enough time, they would’ve decided to be together, and that scene is where they both really felt it for the first time—even if they didn’t believe the other felt the same way.

I’ll be honest: I really don’t want to talk about “Despair” because it’ll just make me sad. Alas, there is one question that still needs to be answered: When did Dean know that he was in love with Cas?

When it was already too late. Much like in S11, I think it took Dean losing Cas to realize how he felt about him. The difference here is: I think Dean would’ve realized it regardless; hearing how Cas felt about him and then losing Cas just forced it. Had Cas not died, I don’t believe it would’ve been too long before Dean realized it naturally, and that’s the most frustrating thing about this scene is that Dean didn’t have to learn how he felt through the trauma of losing Cas.

I’m not trying to diminish this scene because, had there been closure—and proper editing—I’d say this scene was the perfect avenue for Castiel’s character to go down because it would mean that, when he came back, he could be with Dean.

Again, I’m not getting into the semantics of the final couple episodes or how they handled Destiel because it’ll just make me mad, but I think Dean realizing he was in love with Cas was just as big of a factor in him seeing himself differently as Cas’s speech was. I think Dean wanted to honor Cas by being the person Castiel saw him as; I think Dean wanted to live as a man worthy of being loved by the man he fell in love with.

Anyway, that’s my take on when Dean Winchester fell in love with Castiel based on what canon gave us. As someone who had been very realistic about the possibility of Destiel over the years and had never truly hoped for it in canon because I knew better, I have never been more convinced that Dean is in love with Castiel as I am now, after the show has ended.

I don’t think I can say I believe he was in love with him all along, but I believe that his story, their story, of falling in love is real and true, however long it may have taken. I’ll never say goodbye to these two, but I’m happy that I can at least walk away from this show knowing that they found each other in the end, even if their ending didn’t do justice to their legacy.

Let me know when you think Dean fell in love Cas or vise versa. I’m curious to know what you see in their relationship. I don’t think I’ll be making a post like this for Castiel because, in my opinion, Cas fell in love with Dean rather quickly—his journey was just realizing what that meant. Not only were we deprived of a great Sam/cas storyline bc of destiel but we also missed out on the cute friendship of Jared and Misha. I dont even like Misha but i could watch him and Jared take the piss out of each other at cons all day long lol

You know, whenever these two are together, they seem so lighthearted. They joke with each other, make fun of each other, prank each other, and, like you said, I could watch them for a long, long time and laugh a lot while doing it.

But Destihellers created this whole narrative of "if Jared does A, it's a crime. But if Misha does A, it's a fun joke!" that is just so hypocritical. Misha can do basically anything and he's the fun guy, the sweetest baby. But if Jared does it, he's a monster, he had the worst possible intentions. The double standards annoy the hell out of me.

About Sam and Cass, it's just plain pathetic what they did with their relationship.

The thing is: I love Dean. He is my second favorite character. But he was never the best friend for Castiel.

Let me make things clear here: I don't think Castiel is a poor baby, an innocent angel. He made mistakes, big mistakes, and there were times in which Dean, and Sam, deserved to be furious with him.

But whenever Cass needed help, whenever he needed reassurance, he couldn't go to Dean.

Sam would always welcome him, though. Sam is the one that consistently treats Castiel well. Sam's is patient, he trusts and respects Castiel, he listens, he  comforts, and they could bond on so many things.

But they don't.

On the contrary, Castiel fluctuates between "nothing is worth losing you" and ha! Joke's on you, I don't care about Sam. I mean, he canonically stopped talking to Sam because he had a fight with Dean. He broke Sam's wall to stop Dean. He released Lucifer, after everything Sam sacrificed, and the had the balls to act like the Winchesters were also at fault. I could go on and on and on.

And this is, at least partly, because of Destiel. Or rather, because of destihellers. For them, Cass must be Dean's, Cass can't have other significant, long lasting relationships. Everything Cass does has to be about Dean.

And the writers were too afraid to go against that. I'll give them this: sometimes they tried. But they didn't commit to it: Meg died, Hannah left, then betrayed  Castiel, then died. Jack is probably the only exception for that, because, so far (and I just finished ep. 15x12) he is the only consistent, long lasting, significant relationship Castiel has that the show takes the time to develop on screen. Because, yes, the show tell us that Sam is one of Cass' best friends, but they don't actually develop that statement.

Not even Claire was safe from that, his vessel's daughter. Did they interact after S10? I'm middle of rewatching SPN and watching S12 to S15 for the first time, and I don't remember their interactions outside the two or three episodes Claire appeared in S10.

The other part is, of course, the writers' inconsistent characterization and the way they seemed lost with what to do with Cass sometimes. So, whenever they didn't know what to do, they stuck with this cycle: (1) Cass trust the wrong people -> (2) Cass makes a mistake (usually when he tries to fix things by himself) -> (3) Cass' self-confidence gets really low -> (4) Cass tries to make up for his previous mistakes -> go back to (1).

In short, anon, Castiel deserved better, Sam deserved better and Jared deserves so much better. And yes, destihellers are a very big reason for this.

ESC 2022 - my top 10

Happy Eurovision week folks. I finalized my top 10 Eurovision list weeks ago, but I just never thought about actually posting about it here. Until now. I have fully embraced the Eurovision takeover of this blog. My kdrama followers will just have to bear with it a bit longer. I would say that I am sorry... but I am not. This is my civic duty as a European. 

10 - Netherlands

This is a ballad heavy year I feel and this is probably my favorite ballad of the year. I enjoy Greece a lot, but damn wouldn't I just enjoy it more in Greek. And S10 is singing in Dutch, which I think is just wonderful. It's atmospheric and melancholy and it comes across very well without being in English. There seems to be enough going on here where I am not bored and it does not leave me cold ether. Every ballad get’s a big plus if it’s not sung in english. I do worry about it being underwhelming on stage tho.

9 - Lithuania

Monika Lui is a goddess, I adore her so much. Sentimentai is just a very chill vibe, it is so classy, almost sensual in it’s presentation and very atmospheric and it's in Lithuanian which just adds to the magic of it all. I liked the staging of the national final and Monika is so charming that I hope it translates well to people at home on Tuesday.

8 - Serbia

This is an performance art and something that is destined to become one of the eurovision moments of this years contest. I adore this. This is different, this is odd but in a good way. It's not in english. It's a Serbian woman washing her hands for 3 minutes. This is just so great. And Konstrakta is such a stunner. She is an artist, she is a legend and she is the moment. I like her performance maybe a bit more than the song, but whenever it comes on I enjoy myself a lot. You got to clap along to Biti zdrava bit.

7 - Spain

A standard, high-energy, extremely well choreographed, maybe a bit paint by number fun pop song is a must at eurovision for me. It brings the party. It's fun. I enjoy a good dancy pop song. Chanel is so good on stage, it's a joy to watch, this is going to be a moment for sure. It's just fun. There has to be at least one of these in every eurovision and Spain brought it for them. I hope Chanel brings Spain a very good result. She deserves it. Because watching this at Benidormfest was spectacular and it will also be so at eurovision.

6 - Austria

This is such a basic, edm dance track. It's bit dated even. But damn, I have a good time listening to it. I do worry about how this is going to turn out live tho. And it has slipped in my ranking a bit since it came out. It's just fun. I enjoy this a lot. I am just a simple girl that likes fun pop. What can I say.

5 - Czech Republic

I am hoping the Czechs can get a good result with this one, because it's a bop. It's simply just such a fun song. And from the rehearsal footage it looks like it's going to be very good live. I can't wait. And the band I am Domi just look like such nice, lovely people. I wish them the world and a good eurovision results.

4 - Moldova

Moldova always brings something fun to Eurovision, they just seem to get the spirit of the contest and don't take it too seriously ether and Zdob si Zdub are Eurovision legends. They were the first ever act that Moldova sent to Eurovision, they came back in 2011, and they are back with another bop. I love a good eastern European folk song. It's extremely fun. Eurovision needs at least one of these types of song each year, I think. It's a must! A fiddle AND an accordion. Oh this is some good stuff. This is pure fun. It puts a smile on my face every time.

3 - San Marino

I love the little chaos micro nation of San Marino at Eurovision. They brought us Senhit and Fo Rida last year, in 2019 we got the iconic disco dad that is Serhat and now they give us the one and only Achille Lauro with some more Italian glam rock. I mean what's not to like? 

I am of course familiar with Lauro from Sanremo and I have been waiting for him to go to Eurovision ever since Sanremo 2020. I enjoy a lot of his songs and stripper is no exception. It’s not his best song maybe, but it’s still very much him (which I enjoy) and very fun. I think we need a bit of Italian glam rock every year at eurovision. We have ballads and dance pop every year, so why not? I have previous attachment to him so that also probably plays into me having San Marino this high on my list. But I just enjoy him so much as an artist and I know he will BRING IT on stage. He is a true performer more so than a singer. And I am going to enjoy every minute of it.

2 - France

A rave song with some folky, traditional sounds thrown into it sung in a minority language? yes please! There is honestly nothing about this that I don't utterly love. This is what I want from Eurovision (or one of the things). This is just so great. It stands out, it picks up where Go_A left off. I demand that we get at least one of these songs at eurovision every year from here on out.

1 - Ukraine.

There are moments when I think France has become my favorite song of esc 2022 but then Stefania comes on and the flute solo starts playing and my heart just soars with that melody. It's so great. This is what I want from Eurovision. There is just something about eastern european folk music at eurovision that just does things to me and I like the rap part as well. It's a nice mix of modern and traditional stuff. This is what Eurovision is about. It was the same with Go_A last year. I know people are going to say that they won because of the war if they actually manage to win the whole thing. But the song is good, it stand out from the rest and Ukraine just always brings it at Eurovision. They are the best eurovision nation imho.

can you talk about chlark beyond chloe? personally i think it's weird that the writers kept adding kisses and weird romantic moments without any pay off. i don't know much about the fandom back then but i think the writers were baiting fans since clark/chloe seems to be the second most popular ship after clex. second i personally think chloe would never be happy with clark or anyone tbh and she doesn't seem like the type of person who would have kids so the finale was weird to me.

Re: shipping in sv fandom. there was definitely drama (clana was HUGE when the show was airing and every ship was basically derailed by it lol) but I stayed in my clois lane with a small circle of fandom friends much like I do now. a good measure of clois fans were fans of lois and clark from other mediums, come to sv just for lois and clark, myself included. we were pretty insulated as a fandom even back then. I do remember seeing more Chlark after the S5 finale (when Chloe kisses him goodbye), but those dropped off after Jimmy was introduced right away in S6. The most drama I encountered was with Chloisers: Chloe fans who believed wholeheartedly that Chloe was Lois. They hated SV!Lois and were convinced she would die so Chloe could take her name and job and place by Clark's side, thus a Chlark endgame. this was a popular theory amongst that fandom even into s9, when the clois ball started to roll for true.

bait and switch

a lot of Chlark is rooted in this notion that chloe WOULD be the best thing for Clark, the ideal Lois, the true best friend, the human hand guiding him through Earth's troubles. she would be could be the BEST possible lois archetype for Clark. it's not a wrong interpretation. she was specifically written as a lois-and-lana-proxy (teenage lana is a reporter in some AUs and even some as an adult as a tv correspondent) and she's given many lois-ish traits (tenacious, secretly crushing on clark and in denial), but this interpretation is deeply flawed. first, because lois does eventually enter into the picture and she has her own defining traits that, when compared to chloe, make chloe seem much shallower than realized. secondly, within the complete context of the story, her position in the greater narrative is not as ~the one who got away, the way it did very early on in S1-S4, but one who clark tolerates.

they're friends because clark is forgiving and chloe has staying power. their friendship is riddled with insecurities and unknowns the characters create for themselves. their dynamic is defined by conflict, not resolutions. this is not made easy by the fact that chloe is such a strangely written character, but ultimately she is positioned as a counter to clark achieving his happiness. not a thematic narrative foil but an obstacle clark eventually relents to.

2. and it has been so from the get-go

S1 is the best season for them and the single season which actually considers Clark's side in this dynamic. everything about them later on can be explained with how they are in this season. and that's the problem. when they're 14 it's nice teen angst drama and works perfectly to establish the dynamic. when they're 24 it's at best a pattern, at worst regression. we expect certain behaviors, dismiss them too, when it's children, at least I do. clark and chloe never move beyond the dynamic they establish in s1 and early s2. in essence, clark and chloe remain children around each other. they have many discussions in the later seasons that make at least one appear petulant.

so S1 clark has just been told the greatest secret of his existence and he imprints on lana hard that same night (right AFTER jonathan tells him, he meets lana at the graveyard and talks to her for the first time EVER, a lot of childhood imprinting going on in SV). all of s1 follows clark's heartache over lana, watching her from afar and figuring out a way to be near her. this pain is exacerbated by the fact that he believes he caused her her greatest grief: the death of her parents via the meteor shower which he arrived in.

here the first beat of the chlark dynamic is established: chloe's job and passion – the wall of weird and her pursuing the meteor infected oddities of SV - directly affects clark in a negative way (he's suicidal for much of s1-s3). so her crush on him is countered with her unknowingly causing him great grief. om top of that: clark becomes part of this passion of hers and she eventually begins to pursue him as a story to be uncovered, very superman yes. here tho, it causes nothing but strife for them and paints chloe in an awful light (and clark too, highlighting his refusal to open up). I personally enjoy this aspect of them in s1. bc they're so young I give em a free pass and it's a good conflict playing around with old superman tropes, but it makes for a fraught friendship.

3. the second beat

is that neither chloe's crush on clark, nor his asking her to stop pursuing his truth, do anything to stay her. her tenaciousness becomes intrusiveness and inconsideration (many of her accomplishments irt the daily planet are directly bc she betrays clark). she simply will not listen to her friend and does not believe his livelihood and autonomy is worth losing a story over. this is literally the opposite of comics/live action lois lane, who in various versions drops the clark reveal story to protect him. this passion turns vindictive pretty early for chloe, who eventually pursues stories about clark out of jealousy and entitlement (against lana also).

4. the third beat

is that clark doesn't ever see chloe as romantic prospect except this time in s1. the tornado trapping lana pulls him away from any solidifying of the clark/chloe dynamic, and that's that. but we know clark was willing to go for it in early s2 when he apologizes to chloe about running off on her. it's chloe who decides not to go on with the relationship. clark is visibly confused, but also 15 so he can't see that chloe is putting on a brave front to protect herself from clark running off again. I liked this too as it's another play on superman tropes, but my sympathy for them stops here.

5. and stays here

these beats are the entirety of this dynamic. everything about chlark can be distilled down to their childhood. it's why I don't hate them completely, bc I have a lot of love for kids who hurt in such a way and that time is never easy. in s8 (I think its s8) when we get a flashback to when they meet as kids (more imprinting!). little tenacious cute chloe kisses insecure clark bc of the funny awkward tension, acknowledging it, and then immediately takes it back because they're better as friends. (also they’re like 11 lol)

every single romantic moment with them is undercut either by chloe herself, or by the presence of other storylines/romances the writers wanted to pursue. the lack of integrity in chloe and the lack of interest in clark, regardless of how sincere their connection or how messed up, is a central part of their dynamic that needs to be reconciled with their friendship. and its exhausting bc there is never a point they are ever truly comfortable around each other.

6. to a fault

knowing the secret doesn't change chloe's methods. it doesn't make chloe clark's great confidante. if anything, it complicates matters for both because their relationship then becomes about the greater good and clark's great destiny. everything chloe does becomes about that, which in theory sounds awesome, but is executed much the same way as s1!chlark: by reiterating behaviors that highlight the negative aspects of that loyalty and the negative aspects of their characters.

the single time they do actively examine what this loyalty means and how chloe's hero complex complicates things for chlark is with s8 and davis. she protects davis with the skills of subterfuge and secrecy she developed as clark's friend. and it costs her jimmy and a lot of her personal integrity as a character. tho ironically it makes chloe the strongest she's been as a character. this is the first time clark is forced to view chloe as an enemy and he never quite recovers from discovering the dark depths she’s willing to go to. 

it's an arc dealing with the established beats: how far chloe is willing to go for a kryptonian (very far), how much she's willing to do for him (A LOT and all of it illegal), and what it costs her (jimmy). it deals with her jealousy (always second choice) and her motivations (uncovering the truth). this great want that she struggled with for years is turned on its head and examined, revealing just how weird and dark her hero complex is because obviously davis is not clark. davis/chloe served to highlight more than any other arc how it's really too bad that clark never saw her that way, because she has so much love to give and when channeled, it's a great force. only it's a great force for evil. clark has to confront that it’s not just lex but his other closest friend who is willing to go so far. they backtrack hard in s9 and s10 but they keep this underlying wariness in clark towards Chloe throughout. it’s not anything new, but it’s no longer subtext that clark doesn’t fully trust chloe.

7. And that's the rub

in the end. chloe and clark have many storylines they're in together and chloe's important.... to develop clark and as a counter to clark. clark never instigates anything, not once, for 9 years! when the show did give us Moments TM, clark is reacting, not actively making choices to connect to her. if anything, clark is incredibly awkward about chloe when they become intimate. he doesn't seem to know what to do with her crushing on him (the elevator scene is a great one to show just how awkward chloe makes him feel). more than that. clark never tells her his secret. and later on, chloe doesn't tell him half the crazy wild shit she does to protect him bc she knows he would disapprove. I still hold that the only reason they work is bc clark is a forgiving character and would give her chance after chance after chance. that's the watsonian explanation, but the doylist explanation is that the writers just never cared to explore them beyond this point.

8. and what was beyond that point?

they would've been a great counter to lexana in S6 and early clana (clark finally having a gf who knows). it’s playing the clark/Chloe as a straight lois/clark proxy before actually pursuing lois and clark. it could’ve been the precursor to davis and caused an even more personal conflict! the kiss at the end of s5 was their chance. they could've written chlark devolving much the same way lexana did in s6 (or not). but again. the writers never went that far and clearly never wanted to. it kept chlark forever in this stage of childhood friendship always on the brink of collapsing, tittering either way. it's also tough to speculate bc clark's just not into her. in fact he becomes more and more wary of her, to the point where he believes she can do horrible things, and he's right. the stories continually make their methods complete opposite.

they go out of their way to show chloe realizing how happy clark is with lois. and even play a joke on the fandom by literally turning her into lois and seeing the sparks between her friends. it's almost... cruel but it does serve to show how clark is when he's smitten and he's never looked at chloe that way except during the dance when they were kids. other unrequited dynamics have at least some spark from the desired, but nil from clark. clark is into chloe in late s1, but she shuts him down, and when he seems to be into her again (damn that s5 kiss was a good one lol), she shuts him down again. it's just a weird writing choice all around, and that they kept nuggets of it throughout the show is the thing I cringe at most whenever I rewatch.

9. bait and switch 2

with hindsight it is definitely ship baiting and that sucks for that dynamic bc without it their friendship would’ve been the stronger, or at least not full of so much negativity. all it did was remind everyone that chloe’s been duped since she was a kid and that clark is both stupid and strange for never noticing and letting her get away with shit just bc she’s the most loyal. I don’t ship them and even I get frustrated lol

I just want to hug you and everyone who had SPN as their #1 or only fandom. I jump from one hyperfixation to another all the time and I wasn't that invested in spn anymore, so yes, it spoiled my mood a bit, but I shrugged it off and continued reading The old guard fics. But people who had SPN close to their hearts, who wrote amazing metas, who literally couldn't sleep because of nerves... you were done so dirty. You, and we, and the characters we love, deserved better.

I’m going to ramble for a while because I need to let this out of my chest. I hope you don’t mind.

I loved SPN. This show helped me go through a lot of shit. And I know it was never perfect and it gave me a lot of heartaches and headaches because some writers fucked up things, but I loved the characters and the story. But it also impated my life in so many ways.

Thanks to Dean, I started to hate myself a little bit less. I still have to work through that, but because of Dean, I realized that even though I’m broken, people can still love me despite my scars and my sharp edges. And he helped me to open myself a little bit, letting in people who I love with all my heart, and I’ve been able to speak about some stuff I still have a hard time talking about. And he also made me realize that I should enjoy the things I like without expecting to fit a pattern.

Thanks to Cas, I discovered I was ace and I finally found out that I was in the autistic spectrum and that there was nothing wrong with that. He also helped me feel accepted and not to be so ashamed about feeling so out of place in every situation. Cas has helped me to be kinder to others and to try to do what feels right in my heart. Cas has made me realize that this world might be terrible sometimes, but there is still so much good in it.

Thanks to Dean and Cas and their relationship, I have been able to make gifs and write fics. I’m someone who alway sees the worst in everything I do, but gifmaking is something I’m really proud of. I still think I need to improve, but when it comes to my gifs, I look at them and I think “well, at least I’m quite decent at this”, and that’s something that’s never happened to me. I’m someone who keeps thinking that I’m not good enough. But not when it comes to gifs. And also it has made me enjoy writing again, even if I’m not the best, but it’s something that I can do and say “I’m not great at this, but this makes me happy and that’s enough.”

Thanks to Dean and Cas, I have also spend so many good times reading about them falling in love in so many ways. I have seen beautiful creations in the shape of fanart, gifs and edits. And I have fallen in love with them (ironic becuase I’m aro, but that’s the power of Destiel), and I have always looked forward to seeing them together just for 5 seconds. They have kept me going in my darkest times and I have loved them with everything I have.

Overall, SPN has gotten me through some really tough times. I’m not going to get into details, but there have been moments in my life when I wanted to give up, and the only thing that made me get out of bed, was this show. Just knowing there was more story to tell, that I could see my favorite characters one more time, was enough. SPN was my shelter when real life hurt me.

Before I started watching this show, I felt out of place, broken and lonely. But thanks to it, I started to slowly put myself together. Just because of a story and its amazing characters. Things in my life are far from perfect, but SPN made things hurt less. It also let me meet amazing people on the internet and it let me meet one of my best friends in real life, who I love with all my heart. She hasn’t watched SPN since s10, but we’re still best friends.

This show helped me to live instead of just exist. It helped me to create stuff, to feel passion and love, to feel accepted, to be less ashamed of who I am, to stop consider myself so broken. I saw these characters going through so much and never give up that they inspired me. And they found a way into my heart. And they made me believe that when things go really bad, if you can get up and fight, you’ll be able to find some happiness in a world where it is so easy to find pain.

But now, the writers have destroyed all of that. All that shit the characters went through was for nothing. They deserved to live and be happy, and instead, they just fucking killed them, forgot them and/or make them miserable. 15x20′s story is “life sucks and then you die.”

How is it possible that a show that focused so hard on a found family, on accepting yourself, on telling the world “fuck fate I write my own history” and I will keep fighting to be able to live my life in my own terms, has destroyed everything the story and its characters stood for?

I’m hearbroken and angry, because they destroyed something I loved with all my heart and they treated Dean, Cas and Sam like shit. In the end, the writers not only did not care about the characters; they didn’t care about us. I knew that the ending wasn’t going to be satisfying, but this ending is a direct “fuck you” to everything SPN was and to its characters. This ending basically said that “why bother fighting and living, when dying and going to Heaven is the solution to your problems?”

We deserved better. Dean, Cas and Sam deserved so much better.
