Yuri's dialogue (JP) is so fascinating to study, like... the repetitive use of certain words/phrases that others use sparingly but he uses constantly. the way it feels like his vocabulary is more expansive than what he uses, but he defaults to a "comfort" level of speech. the way it mixes in with his sort of "street talk" words and the sheer level of informality. the way his "street talk" phrasing is contrasted by the tone of his voice (on that note, people I know who also know JP are also very endeared by these aspects of him so I KNOW IT'S NOT JUST ME!!!).

'cause the thing is, he uses phrases that yeah, other people do use, but he uses a handful over and over and over (contrast to other characters' sparing use of repetition). it's actually... really refreshing? it sounds more relatable and less "video game/anime/JRPG/RPG" writing or something, idk. like closer to how a real person would speak.

I do my best in my translations not to make things sound too stiff across the board, but Yuri makes it so easy. it's why I'm so interested in translating all his lines in Vesperia, like... the actual, original tone for him with his original wording because it's smth Eng only players don't get to experience ('cause even if you listen with JP audio, if you don't know the language, ofc you're gonna miss out on context. it's nobody's fault for not knowing, just... they unfortunately miss out). the thing is, there are a lot of times when the lines in and of themselves are not contextually incorrect in the English ver (usually the situation for smaller scenes, because they altered the text outright for more important stuff which was the stuff that originally set me off, but there were also plenty of cases of just vocal tone shifting with the correct context that still gave off the wrong impression), but Yuri's tone is shifted away from the original in Eng even though it's completely and perfectly translatable.

I am by no means about to translate the entire game because let's face it, I really don't care that much for Vesperia on the whole. I'm kinda stuck with it because Yuri's there lo and behold I actually am WAY more engaged in his stories in Rays, Link and Asteria because it's an amazing character put into circumstances where he actually gets to shine and feels more alive, which Vesperia did not provide nearly as well with its very disjointed story. also, Tales gachas have banger stories that are arguably better than the mainline games, and they regularly make Yuri a very central character to the gachas. Crestoria was also about to do it until they pulled the plug on that game and I'm pretty confident something interesting has been lost to the world. also I just generally don't have the energy or motivation to do that, so... I'll only be focusing on Yuri's lines, especially because his stuff is where the bulk of the messing around was. he's just insanely fun to translate for and I love burying myself head first into his speech.

will I actually finish this project? dunno. will I get around to posting it? whatever I get done (so all of it if I complete it), and if I decide to call it quits then I'll post what I have at the time I decide that. will it take a long time? probably, but I can always mention stuff along the way...

Oh yeah so for my UX design class. Our final project is creating some sort of app that links to a wearable fitness device. Like a fitbit. And my group's doing a lil tamagotchi thing, whatever. It's kind of dumb but this class is kind of dumb anyways. I suck it up and do it regardless so that I can graduate.

Anyways so we actually only came up with this idea on Monday lol. Barely done any work on it. But the guy in our group got a fuck ton of interviews yesterday for it, and thank GOD he did bc GUESS WHAT!!! The "check-in" that we had today that was Supposed to be the TA walking around to talk to groups ended up beinggggg INFORMAL PRESENTATIONS!!!!!!!! And no one was fucking ready for it bc on Monday she'd asked for us to choose between presentations or individual discussions and we chose individual discussions. But I guess she decided to do presentations after all.

And well ok so I have a habit of being a little late to this class every day. It's a 3 hour studio and so long as u get there within 15 mins they're chill about it. And today was extra sucky cause I got RAINED ON like pretty hard. Cold ass rain. My jeans were soaked. And well that sucked pretty hard.

But I walked in to find that they were doing PRESENTATIONS and I was like Aw Fuck. And see the thing is, 2 of my groupmates in that class are always *very* late. Like half an hour to an hour late, if they even show up at all. So I couldn't count on them. And my remaining groupmate is the quiet type, so I couldn't count on her either.

So I was like. Aw, fuck. It's up to me.

Sat there in the 5 or 10 mins I had while other groups were presenting to review the interview results from yesterday (I hadn't even looked at them yet 😭😭😭) and then I fuckin gave an informal presentation on the fly about our project that we Totally didn't start working on only 2 days ago (lol). And the thing is. Somehow???? We had the most work done out of the class?????? Most of them hadn't even done interviews yet 😭😭😭😭 like this is due on the 2nd and next week is Thanksgiving break 😭😭😭😭 there is NOT much time left!!!!!!!

But yeah I was riding that high of carrying that presentation for us. I'm so Fucking good at bullshitting.

more broadly i like regulus and peter in the sense that they are diametrically opposed to each other. they are incapable of liking each other because they represent to each other the Worst Possible Choice either of them could have made (from their perspective -- regulus cannot imagine loneliness like peter has willingly chosen, and peter cannot imagine powerlessness like regulus has willingly chosen). and for that exact reason, they cannot ignore or forget each other! they're fascinated with each other the way ppl are fascinated with gruesome suicide. the way ppl are fascinated with how their lives could've played out if they had approached the crossroads of their life and chosen the Other path.

and unlike pairings with sev, i like how both regulus and peter's personal angst is not wrapped up in how they existed on the Outside of adoration and respect and admiration. they are not characters who stewed in personal loathing, both of their arcs hinge on action and choices and the desire to assert themselves upon the world. in my opinion, although reg was lonely and peter was resentful, they both were fairly comfortable with who they were -- there's a degree of arrogance in that, and they both recognize that in each other, and they perversely enjoy recognizing it.

i think they fuck a few times in a sort of high-handed hand-jobby (laugh reel) way. they're playing gay chicken but it's "you lose if you acknowledge the unspeakable tragedy that exists between us without which we would have nothing to say to one another" it's fun for them to pretend that the only thing they have to argue about is their Philosophical World View. they think they're recreating the dialogues of plato as they give each other uncomfortably dry hand jobs but it always falls a little short because of the Thing. The Thing They Don't Talk About. and then voldy's soul is just sitting there like a freaky little homunculus

bonus: if you have read tgcf you will already know this but the main antagonist of tgcf has this weird 800-year-long obsession and carefully cultivated power dynamic with the main character that stems from the fact that their characters are Direct mirrors of each other. and the dynamic involves the antagonist meticulously creating scenarios that he hopes will destroy the protag's faith in humanity and love and compassion and the novel ends with a confrontation of those ideals in which the protag says their similar pasts have Nothing to do with the way the antagonist turned out. and that him losing faith in humanity was a choice he made and not inevitable at all. and the protag proves this by refusing to choose anything except love. this too is regpeter

My main thoughts are - the game itself was mediocre. I don't think the characterisation was a massive departure from the last games. The creator just wanted to cash in on popularity by releasing a game way shorter than any of the others at full re-up price. Generally I don't super mind indie game devs trying to ride a wave, however the creator is a piece of shit and does Not deserve it.

The funny thing is that when I played it with my friend, we managed to not get THE TWO REALLY REALLY BAD ENDINGS. Like bad as in Why The Fuck Is This An Ending endings. So I'm just living in blissful ignorance from those. I know what happens but technically it never happened 🙏

plus the bright side is that my Jecka characterisation has proved CORRECT and I was RIGHT and everyone should go read my fic instead of playing flipside /silly

i really didn't wanna read the book because i knew it was going to make me go insane, but then a friend of mine who i'm trying to force to watch the show (i beg of you martyna. it's so good) decided to get it for me for my birthday.

from the very first few fucking pages i was Perplexed, to put it lightly. i was expecting a light and breezy autobiography with some silly childhood anecdotes and maybe behind the scenes tea about the hollywood crowd. Instead i was served almost 300 pages of trauma dumping, philosophical ruminations and some very TMI info that i wish i never read. i rated this book 5/5 on goodreads btw.

the first thing that really knocked me on my ass was this (i'm ignoring the ketchup story i DON'T want to think about that)

this should've given me an idea about that kind of book this was gonna be. yet i continued on, blindly, thinking, okay maybe he just wanted to get that out there. more power to him. whatever. (not really).

after establishing that all men do is, in fact, lie, i gained a different outlook on the whole thing (i swear i need to read it again, this time in full englit major mode, make some notes and dissect this thing like it's shakespeare).

i like how candid he is about kind of getting lucky with the whole famous thing. he really took that slutty slutty waist and peculiar bone structure of his and said I'm Gonna Make A Career Out Of This. good for him.

to summarize, i think he might be a genius, or he might be insane. he is probably both. i want to shove this book up his ass for many reasons, for example him making me learn the names of his kids (i hate knowing things about celebrity kids. leave them out of this) or for making me agree with him. because i do. agree. I don't appreciate his continued efforts to convert me to christianity and i think he's disgustingly obnoxious in some places, but the truth is he has a real cool outlook on a lot of things and i'm very mad that i now respect this bastard for more than his acting skills. i would like to buy him a six pack and listen to him talk about it. i'd love to argue with him, too. i can recommend this book to everybody who feels like they need to experience some psychic damage and maybe an existentialist crisis alongside it. on Very Nice Paper.

tolkien: tough one. honestly, i feel like due to the nature of the fandom most people have defensible readings of most characters, even if they're not my own? to the extent tht people get characters wrong it's mostly by not thinking abt them very much! I'm inclined to pick Galadriel, though, bc she's also in LotR and so you get LotR fans thinking they can speak to first or second age galadriel, and then u get silm fans overcorrecting and ignoring third age galadriel entirely, and ofc there's the various Sexist Archetypes she gets shoved into by virtue of Being A Woman. actually a Lot of the women in tolkien are characters ppl get wrong a lot. elwing! míriel! indis! idril! lúthien! niënor! haleth! And So On Forever And Ever. this is again mostly due to Simply Not Thinking About Them Very Much tho

wktd: tbh the fandom gets the wktd girls pretty solidly. no real notes here. benefits from being a small fandom for a game with Three characters all of whose issues are pretty spelled out for you & constitute the central plot.

hannibal: all of them @_@ no one understands this show like i do and it's a perpetual frustration... im gonna throw out abigail as my answer tho bc she sooooo often gets reduced to like, part of the murder family, which ignores soooooo much of her storyline and how much she did not (uncomplicatedly) want that. her relationship with will is So So Complicated but ultimately she likes freddie more than she likes will in some ways! and at least back when i was in the fandom ... ppl dont get that or just treat it as like, a flaw or misunderstanding to be corrected.

ok actually since this one's my current special interest i'll go a bit more in depth. tommy's rude & annoying & a fighter, he very very rarely has the sort of fawn response ppl write. techno is funny but he's got emotions and he is usually acting based on those emotions; if you're writing him in s1 he's less based than you think and if you're writing him in s3 he's more based than you think. phil has traits other than being a dad and also if you can't accurately identify which characters he is and is not a dad to then you don't get to write him. puffy, niki, and hannah all have traits other than being women; no, "therapist", "girlboss", and "mom friend" don't count. purpled is not particularly a Manipulated Minor TM, he's an amoral mercenary, he's kinda fucked up by isolation but he's more like punz than he is like tommy or tubbo. none of quackity, sam, and dream are one-dimensional characters whose only trait is Sadistic Abuser but also if you write them without acknowledging that they're sadistic abusers (with the exception of writing about early dsmp/before The Horrors) then you're doing it wrong. same goes for schlatt but with the addition of "he should not under literally any circumstances talk like he's got a tumblr". karl's more of a bitch than that. so's george. wilbur is more of an asshole and less of a creep than that. i could go on literally forever the dsmp fandom gets every single character wrong & it is my burden to be right about all of them u_u

Yea honestly Kaias book club is good n she has great quesions for her guests n seems passionate about it. Yea Kaia's book club seems great. I've seen a couple of them over the years actually. I'm all for ppl enjoying whatever hobbies make them happy, and reading seems to be an avid hobby of hers.

Her mom Cindy is actually pretty smart. She graduated with honors and had a full scholarship to attend university for Chemical Engineering if I'm not mistaken. So maybe Kaia takes after her mom's intellectual side.🤷🏾‍♀️

But, like you said, she's still very young, naïve, and basically been living in a wealthy, southern CA bubble her whole entire life imo.

bc taking john for example, somewhat similarly to dave, a lot of his self image is based on preconceived notions of what it's like to Be A Man, which you can see most prominently imo in the way he idolizes action movie actors, esp when his reality does not live up to those expectations and he starts doubting his self-worth. also, the homophobia is also a pretty obvious indicator of the toxic masculinity he internalizes 🤨 ?

another thing to understand is that a lot of the gender significance in homestuck relies on the fact that we as readers have experiences in the real world that impact our experiences consuming and interpreting media. for example, with rose, a girl who frequently used gameFAQs in 2009 (which is seen as a mainly male-dominated space) is significant (something something gamergate)

not to mention... romantic attraction?? if you change a character's gender, suddenly the narrative significance of their romantic targets changes drastically. if dirk was a girl, act 6 would be completely different just from the fact that the love quadrangle ALONE would have an entirely new dynamic. kanaya is another huge example of this; if she was a boy her crush on vriska would no longer be about lesbian attraction, but instead just another heterosexual love triangle. even if that doesn't necessarily change much plot-wise, as i mentioned earlier it has a big impact on the experience the reader has because a completely different message is being conveyed. and that's just kanaya's sexuality, that's not even getting into her prominent themes of motherhood (or femininity in general)

you can do this with virtually any character. porrim being a woman is important because she is a very feminist character. kankri being a man is important because his male privilege allows him to ignore porrim's concerns about gender inequality on beforus, making a statement about gender inequality irl. jane being a girl is important BOTH because her character subverts the (YA novel?) female protagonist trope AND because the condesce chooses solely women to be heirs (this goes for jade and the prexies as well) which (at least somewhat) subverts female character tropes in general (even just the fact that a woman is the ruler of alternia is somewhat subversive as well). also, this is sort of a bonus, but jane being the first human in hs to wear pants was a moderately-sized Deal at the time. speaking of the condesce, the fact that doc scratch/lord english choose powerful women in the story to act as their pawns (the condesce, the handmaid, vriska, terezi, rose, even kanaya and jade somewhat)? gender's pretty important there too!! for obvious reasons!! roxy's identity is heavily tied to femininity, she refers to herself as a girl the most out of any other character. she herself even compares herself to the femme fatale trope, one that is paralleled by jake's interest in the trope as well. vriska and tavros's relationship depicting a girl harassing and abusing a boy is absolutely important when considering the fact that male victims of abuse are largely ignored irl. cronus is based off the greaser subculture, which is composed of men. hussie based aradia off the "spooky japanese ghost girl" trope. nepeta's interest in shipping would be taken differently if she were a boy, as shipping (and fandom in general) are typically seen as feminine interests, which is juxtaposed with her ruthlessness and violence. this is similar to how karkat's interest in romcoms (yknow. chick flicks.) is juxtaposed with his aggressive and unpleasant attitude. latula's commitment to "girl power" is a statement about the irl use of girl power and how it can inadvertently imply that women aren't inherently equal to men. literally everything about ARquius. damara is maliciously sexualized (although more due to her being japanese rather than a woman, but it's still influential). rufioh is literally based off another character. i could go on

the bottom line for most of these instances is that we interpret a lot from characters based on their gender because we apply the context of our own societal experiences and biases to the story. so no matter what you do, 99% of the time, even if changing a character's gender doesn't necessarily impact the plot, it's going to impact the way the character is received and understood

(this isn't to say that trans hcs or genderbends are problematic or anything. im just giving my opinion on a topic that's caused a bit of discourse recently lol)

right, what I meant about the 'moving on' was that in line with what the person who first rb your post said, jc gets that moment of self-awareness post-reckoning. Not moving on really, but the potential of coming to terms with what has happened, what you've done, and so on. What I was really thinking of as 'getting to move on' was this post I saw yesterday about how our happy ending in mdzs is really a bittersweet one with wangxian (hopefully) living relatively peacefully at the cloud recesses and the elders knowing lwj is fully ready to walk out at the drop of a hat. Because there was some progress made, even though the cultivation world doesn't have that full reckoning, there's a generation that gets to grow up and.. only take two flares with them on nighthunts? is the example I think? in the novel? (which was a mistake obviously, but the way wwx comments on how they can afford to do that in their lifetime is what I mean And they might get to have that for the rest of their life if they're lucky.

as for the canon jiang cheng achieving redemption thing, that's why I said that canon doesn't do his sunny disposition (sarcasm lol) any favours in that regard. I don't like reducing his character to him 'not having a choice' about his actions, because that takes away from his character. The fact that he let himself be pushed into mob mentality near the end of the first time period instead of standing firm and using the strength of the sect to assert himself against killing innocent people is one of the most interesting points of his arc to me. It's like he's fighting for justice and against the other factions to rebuild the jiang sect but then he also doesn't care about the fate of the wen remnants and wwx's wellbeing after all? (I viscerally remember a scene in the novel where he was rude to a-yuan!! a literal toddler!! lol canon jc is very interesting to me like How are you being rude to a literal toddler that just left a war camp. like Dude) I don't think he could achieve true redemption in that regard, but like you said, he'd have to show real remorse for that to be remotely possible and canon doesn't give indications of that. Even the drama (for all its Complex Expression Moments TM) doesn't do that. Maybe? redemption would be possible? But not in the real arc-worthy, prince zuko way. if there's anything jc could do to redeem himself post-canon the list would probably start and end with being a better person. It's weird for me to think he actually feels no remorse over his actions with the wen remnants though, because, hey, killing innocent people, so I guess that's why I'm more inclined to that interpretation of mixed feelings? the reason why I think jc might have a smidge of a chance at redemption is less because I would brush aside his canon actions and moreso because I want to see his character change and grow post-canon and that's just a personal wish for me lol. I want to see jin ling growing up and jiang cheng having become a better uncle and a better person, like, what does canon teach him? that sorta thing. I'll thank you not to put words in my mouth, but also I totally see your point with ignoring what the characters are really like in canon. I've noticed the dragging of other characters too; I love a good wwx critical any day but the total absolvement of jc's mistakes compared to it is weird. like wdym wwx could have just waltzed in with the wen remnants and jc would have accepted and it's wwx's fault he didn't? that's definitely a canon divergence thing. which is fine! maybe they're following an interpretation where the jiang sect isn't actually doing fine by the end of the war and jc loves his brother a whole lot more, enough to have a change in morals for! maybe that's what they want to see happen in the story, and I'm not going to insult ppl for not sticking to canon attributes in fic of course. I just don't think that's plausible in canon. In any case, jc is the sect leader. It's been a hot minute since I read the full novel, so I can't remember your reference to the jiang sect being restored by the end of the war as opposed to having to rebuild more of their reputation after the fact, but regardless he's the one with the position and agency to reach out there. not just help yanli get to yiling so wwx can see her in her wedding robes and then leave entirely. I can't remember exactly how the pretend fight planning went down or if it was even a pretend fight, but still; it's not like he 'didn't have a choice' or wtv and that bothrs me too *juggles tomatoes like a vendor at a crowd play*

In my opinion, redemption for Jiang Cheng's character is impossible. It’s odd how most discussions about his potential redemption always solely centre around his relationship with Wei Wuxian.

While it’s true that Jiang Cheng wronged Wei Wuxian, his biggest crime isn’t his treatment of Wei Wuxian—it’s the massacre of the Wen Remnants. His redemption shouldn’t just be centred around his relationship with Wei Wuxian, it should focus on the Wen Remnants, who were brutally slaughtered under the siege he led.

Making peace with Wei Wuxian doesn’t erase the much larger moral crime of leading a massacre against innocent people. True redemption should be about confronting the full extent of one’s wrongdoings, and in Jiang Cheng’s case, that means dealing with the massacre, not just his wrongdoings against Wei Wuxian.

Jiang Cheng never reflects on the massacre, expresses any regret for the innocent lives lost, or takes responsibility. For Jiang Cheng to even have a chance at redemption, he’d need to show real remorse for what he did to the Wen Remnants—and honestly, I just don’t see that ever happening.

Alana for character opinion bingo

My biggest Alana hot take is that she's the character who feels the most like a holdover from the original mean-spirited and snarky version of DEH. My guess would be that her role in that version was a straightforward "self-absorbed overachiever who's blatantly using Connor's death for her own gain just like everyone else." Then PPL never fully figured out how to develop the fact that she's Not Actually like that. They gave her a little WTAW reprise and a line about knowing how Connor felt, but nearly every scene she's in is still a joke at her expense where the audience is supposed to laugh at how Self Absorbed she sounds. Then the novel ran with that and cranked it up to eleven, and the movie could only manage to flesh her out and empathize with her if it stripped her of her flaws and entire personality first.

Anyway, "Done Dirty By the Fans" is only filled in halfway because while that is undoubtedly true, my circle of the fandom has at least put a lot of heart into understanding and appreciating Alana and I didn't want to ignore that.

What's your opinion on JYL and JFM? I've seen a few say they were just as bad to WWX for not doing much to defend him, especially against Madam Yu, or like when JYL apologized to the Jins on his behalf.

I think the novel doesn't mean them to be seen as bad people just weak. I think I'm more defensive of JFM because fandom is really hard on him, while he was stuck in a terrible situation himself with his wife. The only way you can come out on top w YZY is to never fucking interact w her. To never marry her in the first place ideally. And he tried!

He didn’t like Yu ZiYuan’s conduct and felt that the two wouldn’t be an appropriate match. He had politely refused the offer a handful of times. However, the MeishanYu Sect set about multiple factors, putting pressure on Jiang FengMian, who was at the time still fairly young and had nothing to lean on. Along with the fact that, not long later, ZangSe SanRen had become cultivation partners with the most loyal servant at Jiang FengMian’s side, Wei ChangZe, and rode off into the sunset, roaming around the world, Jiang FengMian finally gave up.

Meishan Yu literally schemed behind the scenes to force JFM to marry this bitch so rip JFM you really pulled the short straw in life. Once he married she's not the type of person he can tell what to do.

Madam Yu, “What am I doing here? What a joke that I am asked of such a thing! Sect Leader Jiang, do you still remember that I’m also the leader of Lotus Pier? Do you still remember that every inch of the earth here is my territory? (Chapter 56)

Much like how JGS can't stop Madam Jin from beating the shit out of JGY... JFM tries to end WWX's punishments early, but he's doesn't seem capable of banning YZY from punishing him entirely. Although JFM is kind to WWX I don't see any favoritism. Correcting jc's behavior when it's wrong is not in fact showing favoritism towards WWX. & ultimately as WWX concludes later on regarding the Wen sibs:

Just as Wen Qing said, if Wen Chao truly wanted to kill anyone, it was unlikely for Wen Qing to be able to stop him. Perhaps she’d be affected as well. After all, children of others could never compare to children of one’s own.” (Chapter 60)

No matter how much he likes WWX, WWX is not his own son. JFM's last interaction with WWX is to ask him to care for jc.

As for YanLi I wrote about her more at length here. I think a lot of ppl in this fandom project really hard on her, so they get very defensive over what is a kindly but mediocre person who benefits from a heaping helping of privilege and WWX's rosy view. To be clear I don't think you're supposed to hate her in the novel. I think she's forgettable. The person who didn't quite catch WWX when he jumped from the tree. The mother of Jin Ling and the person who consistently showed WWX some crumbs of warmth in the Jiang household.

It's this fandom that made her into a soup goddess of goodness lmao. Personally I think it's absurd when they act like YanLi's not responsible for her own ignorance or choices. Like someone locked her in the attic and she didn't know what money or war refugees were. They try to blame the society she was raised in for why her ass only knew how to make soup and it's like... Her mother is YZY. Can't stand YZY but there's no way in hell she wanted her daughter making soup and not training or educating herself. Or that JFM was tyrannical and wouldn't let her do what she wanted. All this to say it's YanLi's own flipping choice to stay not knowing. So she'll always fall short in my eyes, compared to Wen Qing or Mianmian. And again people act like she was so helpless and no one would let her speak, yet:

“If the one currently saying these words wasn’t Jiang YanLi and instead some random person, Jin ZiXun would probably have come at them with a slap already. His face was almost black, but he kept his mouth shut.” (Chapter 73)

Ahhhh... look at all that privilege. No one reprimands YanLi for speaking up. Sharp fucking contrast to Mianmian. YanLi just doesn't want to speak up. She wants her wedding to go off without a hitch. She wants WWX to exclaim over her pretty dress and play nice with jiang cheng and probably stop w his foolishness w the Wen Remnants. Ig she thinks the mental image of her in her wedding dress will be much more filling than meals or funds. Ironically when jc, WWX & the other disciples were headed to the Wen indoctrination camp she loaded them w snacks, so maybe she gets how supplies work. She just didn't think WWX would need any when he was possibly starving on the corpse filled mountain.

guess she's not sheltered enough to not understand how starving works... interesting. Luckily it's not my eyes she's being judged through and WWX certainly remembers her fondly. However he's not wracked with guilt about her death as fandom often portrays him- and rightly so bc it was her own harebrained ass that stumbled on a battlefield unarmed, and untrained and asked the guy everyone was attacking to stop fighting.

There used to be the practice of putting a disclaimer in the notes “the characters do not belong to me, I’m just borrowing them from xyz/ playing in xyz’s sandbox.” Do you think should it be back, would it remind people that the work is not yours, that characters are not yours. Personally, I don't think that would be very helpful, because the problem isn't a lack of awareness that the author is the only true creator of the characters. The problem is that some people self insert into specific characters and project their lives into the character's story. They don't care about the author's intentions for the character, or about what was actually written in the original novel.

They look at a scene where they think their fave was misunderstood and think "XYZ character should have done X thing instead because that's what I would do in their place" and they think they understand the character better than the author because they think they are the character. They can't separate the character from themselves and their personal life, and are willing to twist the source material whichever way so they can (mis)interpret their faves in a way that facilitates their self projection.

I'm of the opinion that ppl should write whatever fanfic they want, and it's okay to make characters OOC. I prefer it when people tag it properly, since it helps to avoid content that I don't vibe with, but I also think the lack of proper tagging is a symptom rather the the cause of the problem. The fact is, some people will think up a character (usually themselves with the name of a fictional character slapped on) that doesn't share a single trait with the canon version of the character and insist it's not OOC. That wouldn't change if they tagged that the story and characters belong to the author, because they're just using the story and characters as medium to talk about themselves.

That's why some of these people go so far as to insult the author and think they understand the story and characters better, sometimes they'll say the author is a bad writer for not giving their faves what they feel they deserve (all this while completely ignoring the fact that the character and story they love wouldn't exist in the first place if the author hadn't written them). In truth, they're just mad the author didn't write write about them.

Of course, not everyone in a fandom is like that, and most fans genuinely respect the author and the original work. Those people don't really need to be reminded that the story and characters belong to the author, because they never forgot it to begin with.

The problem with jkr not facing consequences is also that hp itself was famous all over the world to the extent that ppl are still nostalgic about it but a lot of these ppl don't really follow jkr or start online that much (I'm talking of audiences outside uk/us). Personally any time ppl who knew me as a stan being it up I just go "yea I'll always have a soft spot for the books because of what they meant to me as a child but I've grown out of it especially after what jkr did now" and 99% of the time they have no idea about the term stuff.

Then when I tell them they're shocked but the point is that none of them know about all this because so much of this happens on Twitter and then spreads to only certain pages that are critical and the vast majority aren't that active online. So it's very much a don't know don't care situation.

The scary thing is also, at least in my country, the lack of awareness + ignorance about trans issues which means that if I hadn't learnt and educated myself, or if she'd started her bs 10 years ago I probably would've believed her correct because I did think of her as an inspiration as a teen.
