strap in folks it's time for another neopets drama update

some background reading before we begin: back when neopets wanted to introduce customisation (i.e. dressing up your pet) in 2007, they decided to 'convert' all existing pet art to align with a rigid body structure, rather than all having unique poses. it was just not feasible to create new pieces of art for hundreds of different pet poses every single time they released a new clothing them

customisation had been highly requested up until this point. however, the conversion was NOT popular. in some cases, particularly for basic colours, the change wasn't huge, but in other cases.... uh....

you get the idea. the more expensive colours like plushie, faerie, grey, royal and darigan got the worst of it because they had the more unique poses pre-conversion, and therefore it was largely agreed that the change to the stiff 'samey', frankly kinda goofy converted look did not look great

most users did not get a choice in having their neopet converted and it was done automatically, but if you had one of these colours where the change was huge, you were given the choice of converting or retaining the old pose (but not having the option to customise your pet). those pets that retained the old, pre-conversion poses are therefore referred to as 'unconverted', or UC for short

once a pet is converted, there's no returning to UC. you also couldn't create UC pets anymore, making UCs a limited resource that would only increase in value with time, particularly as people abandon their pets, leave the site, get frozen, etc.

i could write an entire dissertation on the drama that UC pets have caused for the pet trading economy, the neopet account black market, and general retention of the userbase, but to sum it up, people REALLY want UC pets. they are the single most coveted status symbol on the site

we skip forward now to 2023

the neopets team are planning to introduce UC pets back to the site, so that people will be able to create their own UC pets again for the first time post-converstion (legally at least)

they drip feed bits of information over the year about what this will look like. the main points are

changing a pet to UC will be done via some kind of item bought with neocash, the premium currency on neopets that you need to spend real money to get

putting this item on your pet will give it the UC art style appearance

so. not much really known. but expected release is set for january 2024

yesterday, they hosted an AMA focusing on the new UC pet system and how this was going to work. noticeably absent is any explanation of how much this is actually going to cost and whether it is going to involve any kind of gatcha mechanic, so that's causing our first lot of concern

second lot of drama is that the new UCs aren't actually going to be COMPLETELY the same as the old art, as they're making some small changes for style consistency, see below (old on top, new below):

the biggest drama, however, comes from how they're dealing with the 'original' UC pets. ALL pets will be getting forcibly converted on the 23rd, with anyone who has a pet that is already an original UC immediately receiving the UC neocash item. there's mention of possibly some kind of trophy or badge recognition for particularly old pets, but it's vague, and generally seems like it won't be possible to distinguish between the original UCs and these new ones

the people who already have OCs are not happy about this

people are allegedly pounding their pets, cancelling their premium, and quitting the site in protest. the boards are flooded with people complaining about the changes and laughing at the downfall of the 'neo-elite' in equal measure

To expand on my answer below in a specific way: the church of Abadar portrayed in Curse of the Crimson Throne always provided its healing as a service to be purchased, not necessarily as a utility that everyone could freely access. If you had the money to do so, you could walk in, get all your injuries and illnesses healed, and walk back out less than an hour later. If you couldn't, there were other options in local apothecaries, freelance healers, and the local church of Sarenrae. When the church was established and the tenets originally penned, this was seen as fair! Of course premium healing would have a premium price, AND paying that price meant you could skip the line at Sarenrae's place!

Unfortunately, during the events of the AP, a gruesome plague breaks out all over the city so quickly that it catches everyone off-guard. Suddenly, the tenets of the church become restraints, and Abadarans within find themselves struggling with following the ideals of their faith or their ideals as people. Even in the AP, this is not presented as a black-and-white thing; the Cleric of Abadar the party meets and interacts with is having an actual crisis of faith because of the stress the plague has brought upon him as he tries to find loopholes and wiggle room in the teachings he has been adhering to for decades of his life. It's not an easy thing to reconcile, especially when people you know are suffering and dying, but other people you both know and look up to are urging you to stay strong and hold onto your teachings.

With how expansive the plague became, every healer, apothecary, and church in the city was strained to breaking point, but the Abadarans got the worst deal of the lot because they were taught to charge for it and could not adjust quickly enough to the rapidly growing demand and rapidly changing situation. Abadar teaches that trade is the lifeblood of a civilization and that order and law are its bones and muscles; from the perspective of the Abadarans in CotCT, they faced what is essentially the doomsday scenario for their faith, where clinging to law and order and insisting on commerce would cause the death of civilization they were sworn to protect and nourish.

It's of little wonder that certain other horrible things happen to many of the faithful during CotCT, which I will not be going too deeply into in case people want to avoid spoilers for a 16-year-old story.

so. the problem with dvds is storage capacity. with TIT being 2 hours, that is a lot of footage to put on a singular dvd at the resolution that they'd currently want to. dvds come in 2 sizes: 4.7 gb and 8.5 gb. you can fit a 2 hr movie onto a single layer (4.7) but any longer, and you need the double layer (8.5). thus, TIT would have to be on a double layer, unless they don't plan on including anything else except the 2 hr recording. a dvd can't play high resolution footage, only standard definition (480p). so there'd be a picture quality difference.

this is where blu-rays come in. they can store and play 1080p footage. they also hold significantly more space (a single layer blu-ray can hold 25 gb, a double 50 gb). part of the trade-off here though is that higher resolution footage takes up more space. a single layer can store 2.25 hr of HD video; a double 3 hrs. they could get away with a single layer, and that includes room for 2 hours of standard definition BTS video.

problem is, not everyone has a blu-ray player (not like everyone has dvd players either). but the main issue is that DVD players won't play blu-rays--and this includes disc drives for laptops and PC's. you need a special external driver to do it.

we'd be wading into contracts and companies being interested in selling physical copies, and given how discs in general are sort of becoming obsolete, i would be surprised if they put it on disc.

our next option would be streaming. i don't really see them wanting to attach it to any larger corporation--especially given they're physical media guys. the thought of just losing something simply because a streaming service doesn't want it anymore, or the company goes under, would be enough to keep them away from that.

people pitched the idea of nebula or dropout, but i don't see them posting a single video on nebula and then nothing else. and since i don't see them as patreon guys, i don't think they'd want to do incentives for subscription style stuff. dropout would be more of a possibility, but they'd probably want to do more with dropout in terms of guest starring before entirely handing their baby over, y'know? like hank did a whole d20 season before he did his special there.

i do think they might just upload it to dapg. genuinely. because of what happened with WAD--both rights wise and precedent wise. but also, could be extremely good for them if they can actually monetize it. their longer videos on dapg do very well, and since WAD happened before TIT was fully ironed out, i bet they've included the prospect of doing so into their scripting, so it has the ability to be monetized on their channel. plus, the desire to make it accessible for everyone (even though they are trying to tour in more countries). depending on how that goes, it may be delayed in being released online.

@cbtgi was kind enough to share some experiences with me so I can post a few more infos on the ticket trading process.

The website isn't region blocked, VPN is not required. There's no English version available though so you have to navigate the Japanese site.

People with tickets can register their tickets for trading at anytime. Those who are in search of a ticket have to register for a lottery (happening once everyday at 12h starting today until January 6). During the lottery you have the option to choose between different ticket types. The first distinction is general vs. fan club ticket, the former being accessible via the general website, the latter via a dedicated FC link (see above). Then there is the option to choose between paper or electronic tickets and single or bundle tickets. Annotated seats are an additional option. Of course, all these options only become available as long as someone is offering their ticket for trade so you have to keep refreshing the page to see if anything new was added. Apparently, there were around 14 tickets for sale during today's lottery.

Unfortunately, overseas credit cards are not accepted as payment method so you have to choose payment at a convenience store (you'll naturally need help from someone in Japan to handle that).

Whisky, gin and beer

It was always going to be about beer, too - not only whisky and gin. And it was probably designed to be a simultaneous project, that might have been postponed for various reasons: funny how all those intelligent people across the street forget everything about COVID, when it does not fit their agendas. And by COVID, I do not mean only the prolonged lockdowns, but first and foremost the worldwide logistics crisis, with compromised supply chains and overall a huge blow on the transports' sector.

In fact, looking at those trademark websites, it becomes evident that first (now abandoned) trademark application for beer was filed in at the same time as the one for whisky, on December 28, 2018:

Separate categories, as per US regulations, need separate filings, of course. And beer is a brilliant, simple idea, with high quality local ingredients (it's really barley, water, hops and yeast) relatively easy to source. Well, spare perhaps for the hops, but that is not really a problem, anymore:

As I always make a point of reminding anyone, this page does not deal in fantasy and empty, meaningless scouring of social media accounts. And cackle to your heart's content, Mordor, but S seems to have a genuine, informed interest in the industry, as shown above.

This is a different business plan and a different marketing model, based on affordable production costs and yield/volume (as compared to successive, 'limited batches' of tequila or whisky, where the accent is placed on the excellence of the product and know-how, as reflected in the final price tag). You can bottle that beer or you can sell it on tap, partnering with local bars and pubs first, then progressively extending that network. And I bet the farm it is going to be a premium, artisanal beer first, with options open for a more democratic product, once brand awareness is properly built: beer is versatile, like that.

Whisky and gin were expensive, carefully curated pet projects. Beer is a fun, easy and lucrative one, with a wider clientele and fast growing potential. And this is how that unknown, struggling Scottish actor who once was the face of Tennent's has a fair opportunity to strike it big. To be followed, which I might do. And this is also how his products could cover the entire price range, from luxury to affordable.

It is also always disheartening to see how all those bitter women congregating on certain Tumblr pages feel the need to dismiss anything he does. As I always said and I always will, many of them have no idea about the very basics of business and trade, no exposure to that world and, to be honest, no particular intellectual acuity. Plus I bet the farm many of them lie about their own circumstances: it's easy to pretend, on the Internet and always sexier (and lame, of course) to introduce yourself as a corporate whatever than a secretary. But I wonder how would they feel, in the unlikely situation they would be running their own lemonade stand, if passers by started cackling and bitching about their trade, out of the blue.

So, all in all, we seem to be dealing with some careful preparation, portfolio diversification and yes, taking much needed strides away from McGrandma. To be continued, of course...

After reviewing over 1,000 charts, I have found some good setups for the week. These were selected and should be viewed in the context of the broad Market Macro picture reviewed Friday which heading into the September FOMC meeting and Options Expiration, saw heading into the last full week of September, equity markets showed strength following the FOMC’s first rate cut in 4 years.

Elsewhere look for Gold to continue its uptrend while Crude Oil bounces in its downtrend. The US Dollar Index continues to hold lower in consolidation while US Treasuries are failing at levels that could reverse to an uptrend. The Shanghai Composite looks to continue the bounce in  the downtrend while Emerging Markets rise in consolidation.

The Volatility Index looks to remain low and stabilizing making the path easier for equity markets to the upside. Their charts look strong, especially on the longer timeframe with the SPY making a new all-time high Thursday, breaking a range.  The IWM and QQQ are holding up on the edge of a range break to the upside. On the shorter timeframe the SPY is also strong with the IWM and QQQ building momentum as price reaches the August highs. Use this information as you prepare for the coming week and trad’em well.

CyGames is funny for adding a character whose gimmick is that they whaled like crazy on the gacha for premium weapons.

These four weapons are incredibly overpowered pay-to-win options that require you to trade 100 gold moons, which are acquired by getting duplicate SSR characters from the gacha, for each weapon. She's wielding 400 SSRs worth of apple points cards. Her super power is a gambling addiction with unlimited budget.

Haven't played in ages as I tend to with mmorpgs, but am highly supportive of GW2's no-subscriptions rule. Truly a breath of fresh air in today's gaming industry. I'd also like to note (though you moght have already) that a massive chunk of the game (essentially the whole 'base') is free without any of the Expansions, so you can play first with those and see if you want to spend money.

yep, i agree w all this!! and while gacha-style stuff DOES exist in-game, they've been pretty responsive to negative player feedback and have in the past tweaked how certain lootboxes work in response to criticism -- off the top of my head i'm thinking of like, the black lion statuette system that lets you save up to get otherwise lootbox-exclusive items (which is pretty old now but didn't exist when i first started playing); and the way that mount skin boxes do offer a (more expensive) option that lets you just choose exactly which skin you want rather than rolling for it. stuff like that! it's not perfect but it's just nice to see imo, esp in comparison to the rest of the landscape as you said.

i've historically been a little cranky about the living world pricing model, bc i think it comes off as kind of a "hidden cost" that ends up piling up to be pretty unfriendly to new players -- but they've moved away from that format now and now all newer (post-icebrood saga) story content/important plot episodes are included with expacs, and in the grand scheme of things it's still all way less than you'd be paying for a monthly sub over time, so i've honestly softened on that a bit!

EDIT: OH also forgot to mention that gw2 does let u convert in-game money into the premium/cash-shop currency, which to my understanding is pretty unusual (i don't play any other mmos so idk). there are absolutely ppl who manage to buy whatever cosmetics etc they want by just playing the game a lot, grinding up sufficient gold, and trading that for gems rather than ever having to spend actual money -- that method isn't viable for me but if u end up finding that gold grinding works for u, technically u COULD get the living world seasons just by doing that...

Shoutout to flight rising for being so EASY and still fun. So many games its an absolute nightmare to get the premium currency, and you can barely do Anything without shelling out real money. Obviously there's the option to buy gems on FR but they make it so so easy to attain gems through gameplay and trade with other players. I have bought gems if I have the money to throw but I've pretty much never felt the NEED to. And having to put in the work for gem genes and the like gives me something to do in the game anyways, so it's nice to have a goal to reach. I just really appreciate that about flight rising
