Genuine question to USamericans who think that not voting is somehow a good protest strategy: what do you expect to happen? For the sake of simplicity, let's take the presidential elections only; genuinely, what do you think happens after you throw away your vote?
Do you think they somehow not elect a president because a chunk of voters decided to give up their right? That's not how it works. You know that's not how that works.
You want to keep your hands clean? You think that Biden is not good enough, that he's evil, that he's killing Palestinian babies, and you think that not voting will save you from being responsible for your country's actions?
Because it won't.
Because by actively choosing to not vote, you are stating that you do not care which of the candidates will win; and from what I've seen, you lot are pretty convinced it's gonna be Trump, a man who, plainly speaking, is going to kill even more Palestinian babies, and that's not even talking about people of colour, women, queer and trans people in your own country.
By participating in the idea of "both parties are bad, that's why I'm not voting either of them" you are actively giving away your choice to someone else, fully knowing that one candidate is infinitely worse than the other. That, in itself, is a choice. You cannot choose neither. That is not how politics work.
And if you're hoping to pat yourself on the back after the election, saying "well, sure, the Evil Baby Murderer won the election, but at least I didn't vote for the Less Evil Guy, so at least my hands are clean!", well, hate to disappoint you — they aren't.
You have a job. You pay taxes. You participate in your country's economy. In whatever atrocities the USA is sponsoring, you are a participant. And if you don't even want to go and vote to decrease these atrocities, you're an active, willing participant. Your hands aren't clean.
You cannot opt out of politics. As a citizen, everything you do is political.
And not choosing is also a choice.
#politics#us politics#us elections#democrats#republicans#wtitten about the us specifically but it applies to every country tbh

yo what’s up, just saw bruce springsteen backin’ kamala harris for real. how you feel about that compared to ethel cain’s stance?
Bruce Springsteen: "Everybody sees things different, and I respect your choice as a fellow citizen, but like you, I've only got one vote, and it's one of the most precious possessions that I have.
Kamala Harris and Tim Waltz are committed to a vision of this country that respects and includes everyone regardless of class, religion, race, your political point of view or sexual identity, and they want to grow our economy in a way that benefits all, not just the few like me on top. That's the vision of America I’ve been consistently writing about for 55 years now.”
Hi. This isn't a new stance for Bruce Springsteen, who has supported Barack Obama, a close friend of his for years.
Compared to Hayden's (Ethel Cain) stance, at the same age, Bruce Springsteen also wasn’t supporting any candidate. Back then, he said he wanted to do something for the people in ways other than getting a candidate elected. He didn’t know the political game well and chose not to get involved at the time. (Bruce Springsteen in the 80s: "I want to try and just work more directly with people, try to find some way that my band can tie into the communities that we come into. I guess that’s a political action, a way to just bypass that whole electoral thing— human politics. I think that people on their own can do a lot. I guess that’s what I’m tryin’ to figure out now.")
Later, when Ronald Reagan attempted to co-opt Springsteen’s song, "Born in the USA," which was misunderstood as a patriotic anthem, Bruce was forced to consider the issue of political candidates. From that point on, he supported Democratic candidates.
He later formed a special relationship with Barack Obama, a huge fan of his music, and they eventually became friends, even co-writing a book together. (It’s no coincidence that Barack Obama later supported Ethel Cain—it was a genuine passion for her music, which reminded him of Bruce Springsteen’s universe, with a fresh perspective and the same critical sense of America.)
Thus, Hayden / Ethel Cain is not yet at the age when Springsteen became politically engaged.
Then there’s the international context with the war in the Middle East. Springsteen, a pacifist who has written against wars, hasn’t spoken out on this particular subject, likely due to his age and the health issues he faced last year. His guitarist briefly spoke to say that it was a very complicated issue.
Moreover, Trump probably doesn’t have a very different stance on this issue, so the Middle East isn’t a highly differentiating factor in the election. Springsteen maintains his traditional Democratic position, focusing on other differences.
As a trans woman, Hayden would naturally seem closer to the Democrats’ position here, but she also has the choice not to base everything on the trans issue that personally affects her. Her criticism of the Democrats is rooted in international politics.
Bruce is from the North (New Jersey), and he shares a closer affinity with the Democratic mentality than Hayden, who is from the South, which tends to be more Republican or anti-federal. I believe Hayden’s Southern family and local mythology don’t necessarily align with Democratic thinking, even beyond the issue of Middle East policy. Hayden’s rhetoric often puts billionaires and politicians on both sides in the same boat, reflecting a very Southern mentality of distrust toward the elite. But she is still young for all these political issues, and I don't know if she has had the opportunity to thoroughly explore these topics, beyond her outrage against the current war. Once again, at her age, Bruce Springsteen also did not have any electoral engagement or very specific political thoughts.
There are many differences that are easy to understand. Both Bruce and Hayden are sincere and true to themselves, each speaking from their own age, history, the America they know—whether it’s the North or the South—and according to the issues they find most pressing at the moment.
Politics is a topic that is both very simplistic (due to the simplifications of electoral choices, for or against this or that) and very complicated (because of the multitude of issues addressed and the interconnections that make it difficult to fully agree with one side against another).

Mugshot Monday - "Presidential Slogans Mug" by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild with Ethiopia Light Roast by Peace Coffee
No other US presidential candidate has ever run a campaign with the slogan, "CONVICTED FELON".
It's feeling like former president and current GOP front-runner Donald Trump may be unable to shake this new political slogan as it appears to be sticking. He was found guilty of 34 felony counts on May 31.
This Political Slogans mug was made in 2013, so it doesn't include Trump's MAGA "Make America Great Again" slogan.
I bought it after the the 2016 election, I had not realized that Reagan's slogan "Let's Make America Great Again" was co-opted by Trump's campaign.
So I thought it'd be cool to familiarize myself with these historical slogans.
I remember many of them from school like: "Who? Who? Hoover", "For a New Deal" and "I Like Ike".
But there were some others that I didn't know, like: "Keep Cool-idge", "Give 'Em Hell Harry!", and "Turn the Rascals Out". 😂
It doesn't look like mug maker is going to refresh the design to include modern slogans, but I'd make a case to go with the felon one rather than the MAGA one for 45.
Has someone created a red MAGA hat yet that says "CONVICTED FELON"? Guessing we'll see it soon enough. I think it's quite fitting.
Btw, for all you political nerds, here's a list of all the slogans on my mug matched to presidential campaigns. Enjoy!

Echoes of Wisdom Hyrule Settlements - But With Mennonite Names
(and screenshots by me)
Finished EoW a couple of days ago (very satisfied) so now that I have 100% sure that I have visited all of the settlements in the game, it is time to share the fruits of my month-long project! BotW/TotK edition
Process (skip 2 paragraphs if you want to cut to the chase or if you already read the BotW/TotK version)
So basically, places (in the real world) settled by ethnic Russian Mennonites usually follow 3 rules in terms of naming. They: 1) have two components, where the second is almost always a geographical term, 2) have the first component of the names either an adjective, another geographical term or a personal name, and 3) are officially named in High German (AKA Standard German) and have a vernacular name in Plautdietsch (Mennonite Low German) which uses direct translation of the High German name. More on this, including the real-world cities I analyzed to come to this conclusion!
Disclaimer: the process of coming up with these involved visiting the location on my Switch, looking component candidates in my Plautdietsch-English-High German dictionary written by Jack Thiessen using his orthography system in the Bergthal dialect, after which I searched up the High German translation so apologies for any inconsitencies!
Without further ado, let's dive right in, formatted "[actual name]: [High German name] | [Plautdietsch name]!
Suthorn Village - Suedenwald | Siedewoohld
This naming followed my assumption that the English name comes from it's southern location in Hyrule and as such, translates to "southern forest." I wasn't sure whether to have the last part be "forest" or "prairie" (coming from the nearby Suthorn Prairie) or "field" but I settled on "forest" since unless you washed up on the beach, the average person can only get here via the forest. Please note that the actual High German word is "Süden" but whenever there's an umlaut I opted to take out the umlaut and add the letter "e" after for easier transcription and accuracy
Seesyde Village - Meerdorf | Mäadarp
I don't think it's a stretch that the name of this village comes from "sea side" since that's where it is and if you pronounce the name according to standard English orthography they're homonyms. Anyways, this name means "sea village." Original, I know.
Kakariko Village - Gnadenberg | Jnodboajch
Wanted to try something out with the nice adjectives for ths name so I chose the name "mercy mountain," or as it has been translated when the Kansas, USA church was renamed, "grace hill." Both translations are of course, pretty similar so I'm not really biased towards any one of them.
Gerudo Town - Wuestestadt | Wiestestaudt
Meaning is: "desert city/town." I initially wanted to give a more poetic name like naming it "sand field" because when I initially made this name like a month or however long ago I didn't realize the Plautdietsch translation of "desert" is as similar to the High German translation as it is. When the Plautdietsch words aren't similar enough to the High German words, I tend it avoid it in naming setlements because I couldn't find any examples in the real word of the vernacular name being so different from the official name.
Goron City - Hoehleberg | Heelboajch
Was conflicted about this one for a while but then I settled on "cave mountain" since while you can say that a few of the other settlements are next to a mountain/mountains, none of them are entirely in a cave which I think, architechturally speaking, is super cool.
Hyrule Castle Town - Schlossstadt | Schlottstaudt
This is the only settlement that I'd probably give the same name in every iteration in each game since its name literally means "castle town/city." Note that the original word in High German is Schloß but I opted to replace the ß with "ss" for easier transcription." I actually had names for all the ruins of villages in BotW/TotK Hyrule which included Hyrule Castle Town but my post was long enough as it was so I decided to maybe save it for a later post...if this post gets enough interest lol
Scrubton - Waldgau | Woohldgeiw
This one took me the most research because the second part is complicated in the sense that it does not have an official Plautdietsch translation but plausibly could (and plausibly did.) Just to start it off. this name means "forest gau." A "gau," for those unaware, is an archaic/historical Germanic term for a region in a country. This term has cemented itself into present places names, like a) Aargau, Switzerland, b) Haspengouw, Belgium, c) Flachgau, Austria, and plently more. I chose "geiw" as the Plautdietsch translation for "gau" on the basis that High German words that end with "au" usually take an "eiw" ending in Plautdietsch/Old Colony Plautdietsch/Bergthal Plautdietsch/Jack Thiessen orthography Plautdietsch etc, such as "bleiw" for "blau" or "greiw" for "gray." So there you have it.
Sea Zora Village - Meerheim | Mäaheim
As I already mentioned, "meer"/"mäa" mean "sea" in their respective languages. The "heim" on the other hand, means "home," a nod to my translation of Zora's Domain in my BotW/TotK post: "Zoraheim." Together: "sea home." I was initially a little skeptical of this one since I couldn't really find any examples of Mennonites naming their settlements after bodies of water but the sea is so central to the Sea Zoras' identity so I opted to keep it.
River Zora Village - Flussheim
Same as the previous one, except meaning "river home." Miraculously, the High German and Plautdietsch names are spelled identically! Not much else to say.
Final remarks
We have finally covered all of them and I am super satisfied with this! If you made it to the end I am seriously so surprised so please give yourself a pat on the back for that. Especially since Plautdietsch nerds x Legend of Zelda fanbase have little intersection lol. Anyways, thanks again and below is an extra screenshot from me 🫶
#p.s I spent like 45 minutes on the title card thing at the start#gonna miss my school board's canva pro subscription once I graduate#bonus points if you read the scrubton/gau/geiw part#loved this so much#plautdietsch#german#mennonite#loz#eow#eow spoilers#langblr#toponymy

Seeing all the discussions between USAmericans lately about the presidential election is so frustrating because like. y'all know you're going to have a president even if you don't vote for one, right?
It just feels like such a self-indulgent approach to morality because the only thing not voting does is coddle the feelings of the person refusing to vote bc they can be like 'well at least it's not MY fault'
Like the trolley problem isn't really about whether more or less death is better - less death is self-evidently better. That part is taken for granted. It's about your personal willingness to take an active role in the situation - to feel responsible for the outcome.
But the USA will have a president after the election and I haven't actually seen anyone arguing that trump would be the better choice, just that harris is also evil and voting for either candidate makes you morally repugnant. But listen. Listen. refusing to participate in the election doesn't absolve you from the outcome - it just shows you care more about your personal sense of moral superiority than the lives of the thousands of people worldwide who will be impacted by the results of the election and don't get a say.
Obviously we'd all prefer if there was an option on the ballot other than "genocide" and "more genocide than the other guy" but I'm seriously yet to see anyone who argues against voting harris properly acknowledge that if you don't vote then the election still has a winner.
If you're able to vote in the US presidential election then your hand is already on the lever. You're already involved. Choosing to walk away because 'they're both bad' does not morally absolve you from the outcome of the election, it just coddles your personal feelings.
It just feels like such a short-sighted and egocentric view on morality to go "well I'M going to remain morally pure. I'M not going to vote so I'M not culpable for whatever happens." Yes you are. You had the opportunity to pull the lever and you chose not to. Can you genuinely, hand to god, look me in the eye and tell me you think trump is the better choice. One of them IS going to be president and if you don't vote for kamala it IS going to be trump. The system sucks but if you're within it you have to choose one. There's no opting out if you opt out that's just a vote for the other guy so who are you picking.
#discourse#voting#US politics#I can't vote in the us elections but I *can* legally be killed by american armed forces in my home country#my government has a deal with the usa around their military bases where if an australian citizen 'trespasses' the us army is#by both australian and american law#allowed to kill them.#I'd love to be able to not care about the outcome of this fucking election but unfortunately it does have immediate ramifications#to basically everyone in the world bc the US imperial machine is everywhere#I do all the activism shit I have the resources for I donate to mutual aids and fundraisers I volunteer for community dinners#I campaign for independent political parties I go to protests and rallies I pay bail for my friends#AND I FUCKING VOTE#and if my country didn't have preferential voting and it was a binary choice between the two parties I'd still fucking vote

Alyssa Tirrell at MMFA:
Four competitors have forfeited matches against San Jose State University's women's volleyball team this season. While none of the teams have confirmed the reason for their forfeits, the decisions seem to have been motivated by right-wing media claims that a San Jose athlete is transgender. The forfeits have become the latest rallying cry for OutKick host Riley Gaines in her efforts to bar trans women from competition. Right-wing media claims that San Jose State University volleyball player Blaire Fleming is trans began in April with a report from Reduxx. The report investigated Fleming's online and athletic record, attempting to determine when Fleming had transitioned and claiming that she had moved from North Carolina to avoid that state's recent restrictions on trans athletes. After publishing Fleming's alleged deadname in the opening sentence, Reduxx continued to misgender her throughout.
The following week saw several right-wing outlets — including OutKick, Breitbart, and Fox News — parrot Reduxx's claims, consistently deadnaming and misgendering Fleming as well. While Fleming has played in the NCAA Division I for three seasons, first at Coastal Carolina University and subsequently at San Jose, she “has never made any public statement regarding her gender identity.” Regardless, the NCAA does not unilaterally bar trans players from competition, instead opting for a “sport-by-sport approach” that “preserves opportunity for transgender student-athletes while balancing fairness, inclusion and safety for all who compete.” The organization's Transgender Student Participation Policy for this year shows that trans women who comply with USA Volleyball regulations can compete in the division. As the fall season began this September, right-wing media revived speculation about Fleming's gender identity, alleging that she possessed an unfair advantage and posed a safety risk to other athletes. Gaines' home outlet OutKick published several articles asserting such claims, and Gaines herself was quoted as an expert in other coverage of the issue.
[...] Allegations about Fleming’s identity were further inflamed when her teammate and former roommate joined a class action lawsuit against the NCAA seeking to bar trans women from competition. The suit, spearheaded by Gaines and the Independent Council on Women's Sports (sometimes referred to as “ICONS”), echoed in court filings what right-wing media had been alleging about Fleming's identity in the press. Gaines and ICONS then sent a letter to the Mountain West Conference urging more teams to forfeit matches against San Jose State in protest of Fleming's inclusion. The letter was published as an exclusive at OutKick and has been followed by three additional forfeits — by Boise State, University of Wyoming, and Utah State University — all of which have been praised by Gaines.
Gaines has continued to urge upcoming competitors to forfeit their matches against San Jose, even indicating that she would pay athletes who refuse to play. In February of this year, Gaines apparently compensated a billiards player under the same terms, and she has since praised those who have boycotted trans inclusion.
[...] More recently, Gaines released a scorecard evaluating candidates’ positions on trans inclusion in women's sports.
Anti-trans extremist Outkick contributor Riley “5th Place Crybaby” Gaines’s crusade causing at least 5 teams to forfeit games against San José State University’s women’s volleyball team over the alleged trans player is pure sore loser transphobia.

Ao3′s Board Voting is Coming Up in August - Be AWARE
This is about Ao3 where most of us post our fics, and since fanfic dot net won't allow NC-17 or R rated fics, then a LOT of us rely on Ao3.
There will be board member elections starting on August 11th. If you can afford it, to become a voting member, you need to give a 10 dollar (US) donation here and OPT IN at that time as a voting member - https://elections.transformativeworks.org/voting/
This is important because a Missouri conservative Republican politician who in her day job as a politician has worked to enact book bans in Missouri and whose big platform is protecting children from social media online named AUDREY R. is running for the board. She cannot be allowed on. Whoever you choose to vote for as your 4 top picks, DO NOT VOTE FOR AUDREY R.
There is also a live Q&A with her on July 29th at 6 pm USA est time - https://elections.transformativeworks.org/2023-candidate.../
If you are on discord, feel free to go and ask Audrey R what "protecting children" means to her because it almost always means to limit kink and limit queer fic in general. When I know when the voting link is up for those of us who choose to join/becoming voting members of OTW (the parent board for AO3), then I will let you all know and give the link here as a reminder when elections/voting open in August.
Thank you so we can keep Ao3 full of kink and queerness and sex and blasphemy as the universe intended!

USA Presidency CONT; RE:
This thread emphasizing the importance of voting and the evil of both Biden and Trump
Please read and share the linked thread. It is important to acknowledge that if you have the power to vote, that opting to not use it at all is selfish and counterproductive to the progress you wish the world was making. You look at both candidates and the duopoly as a whole, and you go 'I don‘t want to support either of them!'
This is a very sane thought to have. Rejection of the duopoly and realizing the popular candidates and imposition of 'well you have to have bad (1) or bad (2)' is inherently oppressive is a first step in the right direction. When you choose to opt out of participating in the system instead of attacking it from the inside, however, your agency and influence is lost. To remove yourself from the responsibility of contributing to society because it is easier is to be lazy, complacent, & priveleged.
After you know that the duopoly is bad, the next natural question to have is 'What are the alternatives?'
The inherent corruption of American politics as they are now tends to make ideally-progressive people tired. The disharmony makes putting effort in to understand it unappealing. The chances that you and your friends don‘t understand the meaning of the words and labels used in political discussions, or the procedures and technicalities involved in electing these powers is high. You dislike the concept in itself, so your most surface level reaction to it is to not engage.
You will have to stop correlating 'the act of learning about something' to 'enjoying the subject matter'. You will have to learn about politics and about history and they will have to be subjects that discomfort and enrage you. You will have to develop your own understandings of the labels imposed onto your political society if your true goal is to be free from them. Ignoring them is not being free from them. You cannot effectively resist what you do not understand.
I am 16. I am not of age, so I cannot vote. I am a volunteer for Claudia De la Cruz‘s presidency campaign
votesocialist2024.com | twt:@votesocialist24 | insta:@claudia_karina2024
You can read in depth about Claudia and her vice-president candidate Karina Garcia on their website and hear them on their socials. Personally reading how they define themselves, their ideals, and their program will be the best way to understand and resonate with them. For the sake of an introduction and the purpose of this post, I can summarize:
Claudia De la Cruz is running for President of the United States in 2024. Karina Garcia is running for Vice President alongside her.
They label themselves with the socialist party rather than democrat or republican. They need help from of-age petitioners to obtain ballot access. They’re aiming for ballot access in as many states as possible. Their names being a pre-set option on the ballot will increase their visibility.
They collaborate with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, established in 2004. Their ideal is to dismantle capitalism and imperialism.
The candidates have been involved in activism for the majority of their lives. Relevantly, they have been speakers at protests against the US‘ enabling of the occupation and genocide in Palestine.
The way official media frames Trump and Biden as the only two options is only true if you let it be. The imposition that the duopoly is simply too powerful and popular for resistance to do anything is what they count on discouraging you.
No matter what, there will always be another option. There will always be the option of a world that doesn‘t let political powers desecrate their own population for the purpose of funding genocide and slavery. It‘s a simple fact that relies on your love and your anger. As long as the people exist, the option of the people‘s freedom exists. And we know the people will always exist. All you have to do is fight and celebrate for it.
Even if you are not of age to vote, learn about the other options. Use your knowledge to influence and motivate the people around you who can. Talk to your friends and family about politics and study the options together. Attend teach ins and protests. Read articles and watch videos from independent media sources.
Part of life is advocating for it.

In The Locked Tomb, Space Feudalism is good for literally no one.
One of the major pieces of setting detail, to the point it informs almost all of the series’ actions, gives context to them, or is the reason they happen, is that the society of the 9 Houses is Feudalism. Where most books that choose to depict this method of political control as a background detail or as a simplistic conflict between good and evil, Locked Tomb does something more interesting: It posits the idea that this should have never happened. When most people think “Feudalism” they think noble lords and kings that live in opulence. What a lot of people forget is that the average middle class family in the USA has more wealth than the average feudal lord. Or they simply did not ever have that knowledge to begin with. Lords went hungry, they had to fight for their lives, they had to work to keep their wealth (though they avoided hard labor for the most part unless they actively wanted to participate in it), and they had to contend with a brutal system of social expectations that could leave you stripped of everything you have and with only the last “luxury” of being hung with a rope made of silk rather than hemp. In the Locked Tomb series, every Lyctor Candidate suffers. Harrow suffers from the implied problems of inbreeding (her line was pure and pure is a euphemism for cousins fucking cousins in your family tree), a pair of mentally instable parents who opted out when they heard the world might be dying without even fucking checking if it was dying first, an upbringing that left her completely and utterly unable to cope with her mental health and with social skills that were actively harmful to her living a happy life, and then has to go on to be forced to sacrifice the closest thing she had to a friend for the purposes of surviving and doing the will of an emperor she would come to learn to hate. And all the others either die because they made the wrong option in this choice, or were placed in situations that still risked death and which left them barely able to survive. Furthermore, multiple Lyctor Candidates showed the signs of similar maladaptive upbringings and deep seated mental health issues. While we can assume that not every house was as inbred as the 9th was by necessity of what we know about it, Hell its even mentioned in passing that there is tech to help with fertility and reproduction and presumably genetic modification tech to make shit like designer 7 legged dogs a thing (which is explicitly stated to be lacked by the 9th), we can still assume that they were being groomed to take diplomatic roles, military roles, or figurehead roles, and none of the training of any of those roles has a good track record IRL for producing people who are sane, capable of taking care of themselves and their needs in life, or great at respecting the agency of others. In conclusion: Even when you are at the theoretical top of the ladder in The Locked Tomb’s Space Feudalism, you suffer the effects of maladaptive socialization, isolation, poor mental health, and harmful societal expectation. The ancient Lyctors could even be said to be what happens when a person is exposed to all this for thousands of years. There are those who suffer worse, and who suffer more obviously, but nobody is free of the Hell that John has made for them.

Egg donation involves a fertile woman donating her eggs to another individual or couple who cannot conceive naturally. This process allows aspiring parents to have a biological child while relying on the donor's healthy eggs. The best egg donor programs in the USA offer comprehensive support, making egg donation an ideal solution for various situations, including:
Women with Diminished Ovarian Reserve: As women age, the quality and quantity of their eggs may decline, making it harder to conceive.
Genetic Disorders: Some couples may want to avoid passing on genetic conditions to their children.
Same-Sex Couples: Many same-sex couples opt for egg donation as a way to start a family.
Single Parents: Single individuals seeking to become parents can also benefit from egg donation.
