HI. FAILCHILD ZINE is a zine about your ugliest children, your unfinished poems in the corners of your Google Drive, that mortifying first-draft-gone-nowhere you planned to take to your grave. We are interested in publishing your worst works! Pieces that you decided never to send to any proper literary magazine. Stuff that you couldn’t quite wrangle into your vision for the work. Projects you started and never got back to. Bad and incomplete, or good and incomplete. Empty structures clinging to a skeleton of ambition. What you gave up on. The things that didn’t cohere, even if you really badly wanted them to. We are interested in the process and the prototype. Show us what could've been. Show us what was, and was not what you wanted anyways.

Novella Submissions Open!
Following on from our anthologies Other & Different (2023) and forthcoming Other Worlds (2024), we will be concluding our Othered series with two novellas, slated for 2025.
Submissions open to people from underrepresented and/or marginalised communities or backgrounds. These include, but are not limited to: LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, neurodiverse and people with disabilities.
Submissions open 1 – 30th April 2024
Theme: We’re looking for stories that explore what it is to be other and/or different, whether as an individual, group, community or society.
We leave it up to the authors how they wish to explore this. We welcome stories that explore the effects of being othered, the positive and negative repercussions, whether acceptance is finally found or if it is even required or wanted.
Word Count: 17,000 minimum, 25,000 word maximum – hard limits This word count falls on the shorter end of novellas (as defined by SFWA/Nebula Awards), and some definitions may class this as a novelette.
Genre: Although the majority of our submissions are often speculative we do and have published romance, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, and more. We strongly encourage submissions of all genres.
For inspiration, here are some examples of Othered stories we’ve enjoyed:
Out of Darkness Shining Light by Petina Gappah
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle
The shadow king by Maaza Mengiste
Andrion by Alex Penland
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break by Steven Sherrill
The Child of Hameln by Max Turner

Announcement: 2023 OFIC Press Prize
Submissions for the 2023 OFIC Press Prize are OPEN until 11:59pm EST on June 1, 2023.
The OFIC Press Prize will be awarded to up to 2 novels and up to 3-4 novellas, which will be published in 2024. The prize for a novel is $1000 and a novella $250. Novels will be published as standalone books and novellas will be compiled into an anthology.
We're looking for manuscripts that don't really fit in a traditional publishing category, maybe because they're too romance-y for general or literary fiction, and not romance-y enough for romance. Or maybe there's just a truly tasteless amount of smut. What we value most is an earnest portrayal of character, interesting relationship dynamics, and well-crafted prose that prioritizes clarity and voice.
We can guarantee the winners their prize money, thorough editorial feedback, professional cover design, and digital publication. We plan to run a Kickstarter to fund a physical print and distribution. Should our Kickstarter succeed, you'll also receive 10 copies of your book/anthology. We'll do a print of 100 copies to sell in our online store in addition to the number of Kickstarter contributors.
Rules & Restrictions:
Novellas can be 12,000 to 50,000 words; novels are over 50,000. While we have no upper limit, know that anything over 150k is going to be a really hard sell. We're not opposed, though. If it slaps, it slaps.
Must be written in English.
Author must be 18 or older to submit.
Your work cannot be published or posted anywhere else. If you’ve posted a work on any social platform, even if you take it down, for legal reasons, we cannot accept it. This means you can’t delete a work from AO3 and file off the serial numbers to send to us.
Your work must stand on its own as an original piece, although we of course welcome common fanfiction tropes (or the subversion thereof), and works that feel fanfiction-y but contain original characters and worlds. Again, legal reasons.
We can't publish song lyrics (either within the manuscript or in the title) unless they're public domain.
Manuscript Formatting:
Please provide the following as front matter of your manuscript:
A title page with your contact info. Your AO3 handle/social media can go here if you're comfortable sharing that, as well as if you'd like to publish under a pseud or pen name.
A cover letter with a brief fan history. You can share however much or little you'd like to share, but we're mostly looking for your relationship to fandom and fanfiction: how long you've been in fandom, what fandoms you've been in, community events you've participated in, things like that. If you don't know what "in fandom" means, this is not the press for you.
A synopsis of the story. This doesn't have to be fancy or professional-sounding. In fact the closer it sounds to a tumblr shitpost, the better. Pretend your best friend has just asked, "So what's your book about?" The synopsis would be the long answer/tea spill that follows. It should include all major plot beats (even if that involves major spoilers). No page limit, but it shouldn't be super long, up to 5ish pages, preferably 1-2.
You can format it however you like as long as the font is readable, preferably 12pt Times New Roman or Garamond. Please provide page numbers in the footer of the document. Double-spaced preferred with one inch indentation at the start of paragraphs.
If you have questions or would like clarification on any of the above, email [email protected] or send us an ask. We’re excited to read your work!

Theme: "Deconstructing the Objectification of Women's Bodies: Exploring the Harmful Impacts of Consumption from a Radical Feminist Lens"
Women's bodies have been consumed and objectified in various forms throughout history, from the use of women's bodies in advertising to the depiction of female bodies in art. This consumption has been normalized in our society and is often seen as harmless or even empowering. However, from a radical feminist perspective, the consumption of women's bodies perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces gender inequality. For our first magazine we ask for essays, articles, reviews, and creative pieces that explore the ways in which women's bodies are consumed, the harm it causes, and why it's crucial to challenge and resist this phenomenon from a radical feminist perspective.
Submissions Open 5/5/2023 (May 5th 2023) and will be accepted on a rolling basis until 9/2/2023 (September 2nd, 2023)

Curious if you have another update for the 2022 open call?
I've also had this question from @softwarespaghetti so I thought I would join into one answer!
I think it's probably abundantly clear that things... have not gone as smoothly as we planned with these submissions, and I can only apologise. I'm still on maternity leave for a few more months, however I have checked in with the team (including our new bod who has just started to cover my leave, which will help capacity a lot!) and they are hoping to get back to people ASAP.
It all got away from us, and we've learned some lessons, and we're just really sorry that everyone has been kept waiting so long.

DECEMBER 2023 ISSUE - SUBMISSIONS OPEN
Scrittorio Magazine's next issue will be out in December 2023, likely towards the end of the month. You can check out the open submissions categories over on the website, or below the cut.
As always, submissions are free, and the magazine will be free.
This post will be reblogged every couple of days until November 30, 2023. This is the last day to submit for any of the categories.
Scrittiorio submissions are currently limited. However, I want to keep the 'community' element of the magazine going regardless. For the upcoming December 2023 issue, here is what I'm looking for:
SUBMISSIONS FOR THE CLASSIFIEDS:
Looking for a co-author? Seeking an illustrator? Searching for a book designer? Need beta readers? Need book reviewers? Something else writing-related? Send in your short classified listing. I have limited space - so, barring anything inappropriate, it's first-come, first-serve!
INTERVIEWS:
I'm looking to interview 2-3 published authors for this issue. You can be self-published, traditionally published, published on a serial fiction website, sharing stories on your blog - whichever! If you're interested in sitting down with me for a textual chat, let me know! I will also be reaching out to authors, so these slots may fill out quickly.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON A.I. & FICTION WRITING:
In this issue, I will include an article about the issue of AI being used to write fiction. If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON I.F.:
In this issue, I will include an article about interactive fiction and choice-based narratives. If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON CENSORSHIP:
In this issue, I will include an article about classics being re-written to suit modern sensibilities (in other words, censored). If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON ZERO-COST SELF-PUBLISHING:
In this issue, I will include an article about whether self-publishing can really be at zero-cost to the author. If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON CREATIVE IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY:
In this issue, I will include an article about how to manage creativity and keep it flowing during times of uncertainty. If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AS A WRITER:
In this issue, I will include an article about how writers can continuously improve their skills. If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
YOUR TWO CENTS ON DEALING WITH LOW ENGAGEMENT:
In this issue, I will include an article about how to deal with low engagement with your stories. If you want to share your opinion or thoughts, send them in - no more than 120 words - and I will feature that, with your name (can be a pseudonym), age, and your social media handle (optional) in the Two Cents panel. I will be featuring a maximum of five 'Two Cents' entries per article.
TOPIC SUGGESTIONS:
You really want to learn more about something specific. Writing tragedy, or horror, or fantasy. Character development, or worldbuilding, or getting those 'vibes' down right. If there's something you want to read about, send in that topic suggestion.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
All of the above can be sent to the magazine at scrittorio.submissions @ gmail . com (without the spaces, of course!)
Any changes to the above will be communicated on the website and on the Scrittorio tumblr blog.

One of the fun parts of editing the zine is that I can just... throw my own drawings in since we have space to fill. I also happened to be researching Yokai for an episode of the podcast and found the Kappa to be a particularly anxiety-laden critter - at least, that is my interpretation.
So, the first of what will probably be several drawings I do for the Cryptid Encounter 2024 zine ended up being a Kappa. (Technically, the cover was first, but you know what I mean.)
I also have a color version of the lil guy going up on the show's Patreon as a new installment of our Monster Club trading card series.
Tumblr media
Anyway, just figured I would share this zine update.
Remember that zine submissions are currently open through June 30th, so if you have art or writing about cryptids and monsters, we would love to add them!
